Political Globalization And Civil War In Former British Colonies, Luke O. Feltz May 2012

Political Globalization And Civil War In Former British Colonies, Luke O. Feltz

Student Publications

The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. I set out by testing the relationship between being a former British colony and civil war presence, demonstrating a positive, though not statistically significant, relationship. I also examine the history of British colonialism. Through setting up specific system of indirect rule, British colonizers created conditions that contributed to intra-state conflict. Furthermore, through constructing a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. Yet, …

Counternarratives Of The Diaspora: Haitian Musical Performance In World Beat Markets, Kevin Francis Mason May 2012

Counternarratives Of The Diaspora: Haitian Musical Performance In World Beat Markets, Kevin Francis Mason

Open Access Theses

This study will investigate the performance motivations of three Haitian musicians based in South Florida who use their artistic platforms to offer a version of their country omitted from dominant media projections of the country. This study focuses on narrative as a device that allows these musicians to offer counterstories against dominantly negative media projections that have real effects on Haitians. The thesis will examine the work of world beat artist Erol Josué and his performance motivations in global record markets. His work as a oungan (Vodou priest) plays a large role in the composition of his “electro-Vodou” world beat …

Maximón: The Shape Shifting Trickster Provides Hope For Some Of The Disenfranchised In The Highlands Of Guatemala, Franklin D. Clark

Open Access Theses

Scholars often refer to Maximón, the modern Mayan deity, as a trickster. To date, there has been little research to support this title. The author of this thesis surveys existing research on Maximón's history and roles, along with scholarly literature on the nature of the trickster character, to test whether he is, in fact, a trickster. It is determined that Maximón is a descendent of the ancient Mayan gods, actively worshipped today by some in the highlands of Guatemala as part of a blended "Folk Catholicism," a trickster who has survived the religion of the conquering Spanish by shift shaping, …

The Use Of Positive Deviance To Deliver Patient-Centered Care, Jodie Gary May 2012

The Use Of Positive Deviance To Deliver Patient-Centered Care, Jodie Gary

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

What happens when critical care nurses find themselves in situations where patient care needs are not covered by practice guidelines or standard orders or when the needs conflict with those guidelines and orders? Sometimes usual practices such as call the supervisor, call the physician, or follow the protocol just do not meet the needs of the patient at the exact time and place. Experienced critical care nurses often discuss such situations in private; however, there is little information in the literature about the types of situations encountered and the decision- making processes used in these situations. Those discussions that were …

Eye Size At Birth In Prosimian Primates: Life History Correlates And Growth Patterns, Joshua R. Cummings, Magdalena N. Muchlinski, E. Christopher Kirk, Susan J. Rehorek, Valerie B. Deleon, Timothy D. Smith May 2012

Eye Size At Birth In Prosimian Primates: Life History Correlates And Growth Patterns, Joshua R. Cummings, Magdalena N. Muchlinski, E. Christopher Kirk, Susan J. Rehorek, Valerie B. Deleon, Timothy D. Smith

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Primates have large eyes relative to head size, which profoundly influence the ontogenetic emergence of facial form. However, growth of the primate eye is only understood in a narrow taxonomic perspective, with information biased toward anthropoids.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured eye and bony orbit size in perinatal prosimian primates (17 strepsirrhine taxa and Tarsius syrichta) to infer the extent of prenatal as compared to postnatal eye growth. In addition, multiple linear regression was used to detect relationships of relative eye and orbit diameter to life history variables. ANOVA was used to determine if eye size differed according to activity …

The Antecedents, Process, And Consequences Of Female Sterilization For Low-Income Women In Mumbai, Marie A. Brault May 2012

The Antecedents, Process, And Consequences Of Female Sterilization For Low-Income Women In Mumbai, Marie A. Brault

Master's Theses

Surgical sterilization is the primary method of family planning among low-income women in India; the result of limited knowledge and poor access to family planning alternatives. To understand the dynamics of sterilization, 37 in-depth interviews were conducted with sterilized women from the study community, as well as key informant interviews with community men, providers and government officials. The results indicate that sterilization decisions are made after exceeding ideal family size, that the procedures for sterilization frequently do not follow official protocol, but that for the most part women are highly positive about being free of the risk of unwanted conception.

Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett

Human Biology

One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a within-population decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30 globally distributed human populations, and a climatic …

Resource Availability, Mortality, And Fertility: A Path Analytic Approach To Global Life-History Variation, Mark A. Caudell, Robert J. Quinlan May 2012

Resource Availability, Mortality, And Fertility: A Path Analytic Approach To Global Life-History Variation, Mark A. Caudell, Robert J. Quinlan

Human Biology

Humans exhibit considerable diversity in timing and rate of reproduction. Life history theory (LHT) suggests that ecological cues of resource richness and survival probabilities shape human phenotypes across populations. Populations experiencing high extrinsic mortality due to uncertainty in resources should exhibit faster life histories. Here we use a path analytic (PA) approach informed by LHT to model the multiple pathways between resources, mortality rates, and reproductive behavior in 191 countries. Resources that account for the most variance in population mortality rates are predicted to explain the most variance in total fertility rates. Results indicate that resources (e.g., calories, sanitation, education, …

Senior Honors Projects

This class is the second project under the new Honors Program initiative, Students Teaching Students (STS). STS was brought to URI and implemented by Bridget Griffith as part of her Senior Honors Project in 2011. Students apply in their Junior year to design, research, and teach an honors course on a topic about which they are passionate. The STS program allows motivated honors students to have a unique opportunity to lead a class as student professors. This allows students a freedom of creativity on the topic, assignments, and teaching style. Drawing on our own experiences, we were able to create …

"Women With No One": Community And Christianity In A Secular South Indian Homeless Shelter, Connie Etter May 2012

"Women With No One": Community And Christianity In A Secular South Indian Homeless Shelter, Connie Etter

Anthropology - Dissertations

This dissertation examines daily life and social service practices in a secular homeless shelter for women in Tamil Nadu, south India. The residents of the shelter have diverse backgrounds but local staff members and volunteers describe them collectively as "women with no one": unwed mothers, orphans, widows, women abandoned or abused by husbands and lovers, former sex workers, prisoners' wives, and women deemed mentally or physically unfit for marriage. Daily negotiations of belonging take place among this transient and diverse group of marginalized women and equally diverse and transnational care providers. The closed shelter campus provides an opportunity to query …

Double Engagements: The Transnational Experiences Of Ethiopian Immigrants In The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area, Kassahun Haile Kebede May 2012

Double Engagements: The Transnational Experiences Of Ethiopian Immigrants In The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area, Kassahun Haile Kebede

Anthropology - Dissertations

This dissertation explores the transnational experiences of Ethiopian immigrants in the Washington metropolitan area across generational units. Much of the recent research on transnationalism has focused on the ties immigrants maintain in the sending country. This dissertation adds to this analysis by looking at how the actions of Ethiopian immigrants contribute to nation building in the United States as well as in Ethiopia. The double engagements of Ethiopians challenge either/or views of immigrants and demonstrates how transnationality works in both directions.

My research, based on 12 months of fieldwork in the metropolitan area of Washington, D.C., used participant observation, interviews, …

Suicide Rates Among Young, Married Women In Nepal, Kirra L. Hughes May 2012

Suicide Rates Among Young, Married Women In Nepal, Kirra L. Hughes

Capstone Collection

In 2009, a Maternal Mortality and Morbidity (MMM) report carried out in Nepal by the Family Health Division of the Department of Health Services accidently stumbled upon a surprising leading cause of death in Nepali women of reproductive age (15 - 49). The result: suicide. And the numbers are still on the rise. There have since been no comprehensive follow-up studies and none, to my knowledge, that are currently ongoing. This leaves an urgent need for research to be done on the causes of these suicides (Benson and Shakya, 2011; Bertolote et al, 2005; Pradhan et al, 2009).

Globally, there …

Empirical Sampling From Permutation Space With Unique Patterns, Justice I. Odiase May 2012

Empirical Sampling From Permutation Space With Unique Patterns, Justice I. Odiase

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The exact distribution of a test statistic ultimately guarantees that the probability of a Type I error is exactly α. Several methods for estimating the exact distribution of a test statistic have evolved over the years with inherent computational problems and varying degrees of accuracy. The unique pattern of permutations resulting from using experimental data to sample within the permutation space without the risk of repeating permutations is identified. The method presented circumvents the theoretical requirements of asymptotic procedures and the computational difficulties associated with an exhaustive enumeration of permutations. Results show that time and space complexities are drastically reduced …
