Publications and Research

In comparison with other primate species, humans have an extended juvenile period during which the brain is more plastic. In the current study we sought to examine gene expression in the cerebral cortex during development in the context of this adaptive plasticity. We introduce an approach designed to discriminate genes with variable as opposed to uniform patterns of gene expression and found that greater inter-individual variance is observed among children than among adults. For the 337 transcripts that show this pattern, we found a significant overrepresentation of genes annotated to the immune system process (pFDR>0). Moreover, genes known to …

Using Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Caqdas) To Re-Examine Traditionally Analyzed Data: Expanding Our Understanding Of The Data And Of Ourselves As Scholars, Linnea L. Rademaker, Elizabeth J. Grace, Stephen K. Curda May 2012

Curda

The Qualitative Report

As diverse members of a college of education evaluation committee one of our charges is to support faculty as we document and improve our teaching. Our committee asked faculty to respond to three qualitative questions, documenting ways in which interdepartmental and cross-department conversations are used to promote reflective thinking about our practice. Three of us investigated the use of CAQDAS to provide an additional level of analysis and how we learned more about ourselves as scholars through this collaboration. Our findings include recommendations regarding the use of CAQDAS to support collaborative efforts by diverse scholars.

Menstruation As Heroine’S Journey In Pan’S Labyrinth, Richard Lindsay May 2012

Menstruation As Heroine’S Journey In Pan’S Labyrinth, Richard Lindsay

Journal of Religion & Film

I propose that the Guillermo del Toro film, Pan's Labyrinth (2006) follows the narrative outline of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey as experienced through the biological process of onset of menstruation in its young protagonist. I suggest a reading of the film that takes into account the visual and mythological symbolism of the figure of Pan, as well as the cultural context of menstruation in mythology and religion. I offer interviews from the director that support this interpretation, but ultimately I value a folk interpretation, or a "viewer's hunch" that the strange and fertile symbolism of the film represents a coming-of-age …

Open Access Scientific Publishing And The Developing World, Jorge Contreras May 2012

Open Access Scientific Publishing And The Developing World, Jorge Contreras

Working Papers

Responding to rapid and steep increases in the cost of scientific journals, a growing number of scholars and librarians have advocated “open access” (OA) to the scientific literature. OA publishing models are having a significant impact on the dissemination of scientific information. Despite the success of these initiatives, their impact on researchers in the developing world is uncertain. This article analyses major OA approaches adopted in the industrialized world (so-called Green OA, Gold OA, and OA mandates, as well as non-OA information philanthropy) as they relate to the consumption and production of research in the developing world. The article concludes …

Ranging Behavior, Group Cohesiveness, And Patch Use In Northern Bearded Sakis (Chiropotes Sagulatus) In Guyana, Christopher Shaffer May 2012

Ranging Behavior, Group Cohesiveness, And Patch Use In Northern Bearded Sakis (Chiropotes Sagulatus) In Guyana, Christopher Shaffer

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

I conducted a 15 month study of the activity patterns, diet, ranging behavior, and group cohesiveness of northern bearded sakis: Chiropotes sagulatus) in a continuous lowland rainforest in southern Guyana. My study combined observational data with a novel GIS-based method for assessing food patch quality to assess how bearded sakis adjusted their ranging and grouping patterns in response to changes in resource quality. My study group consisted of at least 65 animals, making it the largest group of Chiropotes yet reported. Bearded sakis were highly active, spending most of their time traveling: 40% of activity) and feeding: 35% of activity). …

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August May 2012

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a paucity of research on the risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexual behavior among general populations of men. Research with male populations predominantly has focused on those subgroups considered to be at high risk of disease transmission, such as gay and bisexual men, injection drug users, and adolescents/young adults. Considerably fewer studies have examined factors among men, in general, and heterosexual men, specifically. Therefore, I conducted analyses with a cross-national sample of adult, sexually active men in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States to investigate sexual behaviors and risk factors associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV) …

Fatty Acid Composition In The Mature Milk Of Bolivian Forager-Horticulturalists: Controlled Comparisons With A Us Sample, Melanie A. Martin, William D. Lassek, Steven J. C. Gaulin, Rhobert W. Evans, Sheela S. Geraghty, Barbara S. Davidson, Ardythe L. Morrow, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven May 2012

Fatty Acid Composition In The Mature Milk Of Bolivian Forager-Horticulturalists: Controlled Comparisons With A Us Sample, Melanie A. Martin, William D. Lassek, Steven J. C. Gaulin, Rhobert W. Evans, Sheela S. Geraghty, Barbara S. Davidson, Ardythe L. Morrow, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

ESI Publications

Breast milk fatty acid (FA) composition varies greatly among individual women, including in percentages of the long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (LCPUFA) 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid, AA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), which are important for infant neurological development. It has been suggested that owing to wide variation in milk LCPUFA and low DHA in Western diets, standards of milk FA composition should be derived from populations consuming traditional diets. We collected breast milk samples from Tsimane women at varying lactational stages (6–82 weeks). The Tsimane are an indigenous, natural fertility, subsistence-level population living in Amazonia Bolivia. Tsimane samples were matched by lactational …

Ludwig Wittgenstein And Hermann Broch: The Need For Fiction And Logic In Moral Philosophy, Christopher Bailes May 2012

Ludwig Wittgenstein And Hermann Broch: The Need For Fiction And Logic In Moral Philosophy, Christopher Bailes

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Many philosophers consider Ludwig Wittgenstein to be the most important philosopher of the twentieth century. His works have been read primarily by experts in philosophy, but one exception is the novelist and contemporary of Wittgenstein's, Hermann Broch. Broch believed that by limiting philosophy to the logical clarification of thoughts, ethical problems cannot suitably be addressed and explored. He thought that rational arguments and fiction play a complementary role in revealing to us our moral commitments and in shaping our conceptions of a good life. Broch was influenced by Wittgenstein's Tractatus and anticipates some important ideas from Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. This …

Global Poverty - Local Problem: Institutional Determinants Of Poverty Among Indigenous Peoples Of Nepal, Gyanesh Lama May 2012

Global Poverty - Local Problem: Institutional Determinants Of Poverty Among Indigenous Peoples Of Nepal, Gyanesh Lama

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation investigated why some groups or communities become poor while others become rich. Using institutional design as a theoretical guidance, the study conducted an in-depth analysis of the socioeconomic disparities between indigenous peoples and caste people in Nepal. The study used multilevel modeling, Geographic Information System: GIS), and ethnography research methods. Indigenous peoples in Nepal were found to be significantly at higher risk of poverty than caste people. Discrimination against indigenous peoples appears to be the key determinant of indigenous poverty. Geographic isolation and proximity to caste people were also significant predictors of indigenous poverty. The study has implication …

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg May 2012

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg

Senior Theses

This study explores the interaction between culture, language, and mathematics through the experiences of multicultural individuals in the United States as they learn mathematics in English as a second language. Regarding mathematics as a fundamental a-cultural truth hides the role that cultures have played in its construction. This study critically examines this perspective through the contradicting experiences of multicultural individuals shared in qualitative interviews. I focus on the power relations implicit in not only the Standard English of the classroom, but also the standard forms of mathematics that students must learn to succeed, and the effects that this power has …

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia May 2012

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this article, I argue that an elevated macro-level perspective is imperative for conducting critical studies in the fields of marketing and consumer research. There are epistemic barriers to operating in this manner, and I offer several suggestions for overcoming these barriers. Finally, I review the research spaces for critical studies of marketing in various global settings and conclude that United Kingdom and Nordic Europe have the best epistemic climate, and this region needs to take leadership in promoting greater range of macro and critical studies of marketing in the rest of the world.

Northern Lights: Fourth World Nations And The Geopolitical Dance In The Arctic, Heidi G. Bruce May 2012

Northern Lights: Fourth World Nations And The Geopolitical Dance In The Arctic, Heidi G. Bruce

Capstone Collection

Over the past decade, the Arctic region has received increased attention from climate scientists, politicians, and transnational corporations. Human-induced climate change is causing glaciers to recede, resulting in new northern sea passages that are highly sought after by businesses and governments alike. Deeply affected by this increased northern exposure are Arctic Fourth World nations – politically and culturally distinct nations encapsulated by states – that have lived in the Arctic for millennia. This paper examines the impacts that expanded northern sea routes are having on Arctic Fourth World nations and the conflict mitigation approaches being used in the region. Research …
