Cognitive Illiberalism And Institutional Debiasing Strategies, Paul M. Secunda Jun 2012

Cognitive Illiberalism And Institutional Debiasing Strategies, Paul M. Secunda

San Diego Law Review

This article investigates institutional debiasing strategies that may work to further minimize conflict in society over labor and employment law decisions. In this vein, Part II seeks to distill the essentials of culturally motivated cognition and how it relates to, yet differs from, other earlier studies on the role that values and assumptions play in labor and employment law cases. Part III then comprehensively explores a spectrum of debiasing strategies for legal decisionmakers, from opinion-writing debiasing strategies to institutional strategies involving specialized courts and judges. Finally, Part IV considers the arguments against such institutions, and finally, the promise of opacity …

Spirituality As A Viable Resource In Responding To Racial Microaggressions: An Exploratory Study Of Black Males Who Attended A Community College, Lloyd Sheldon Johnson Jun 2012

Spirituality As A Viable Resource In Responding To Racial Microaggressions: An Exploratory Study Of Black Males Who Attended A Community College, Lloyd Sheldon Johnson

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Upon entering college, Black males must negotiate a system that assumes they are in need of academic remediation and are lacking in higher-order critical thinking skills (Washington, 1996; Brown II, 2002; Harper, 2012). The low enrollment levels of Black males in college and their disenchantment with their college experiences has increased the likelihood that they will not be in classrooms with a diverse student population and a climate where they could feel comfortable (NSSE, 2008; Harper, 2006A; Harper, 2012). Black males who have enrolled in college must shoulder the stresses that accompany perceptions and stereotypes on campus about who they …

How Would You Feel? Stigma And Self-Esteem In Student Responses To Intimate Partner Violence Vignettes, Taylor Lynn Hall

Graduate Masters Theses

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a public health issue defined as "a constellation of abusive and controlling behaviors including psychological abuse, isolation, threats, stalking, and physical violence that taken together create a climate of fear and intimidation that maintain one partner in a position of domination and control with the other partner in a position of subordination and compliance" (Family Violence Prevention Fund 2004; Campbell 2002). The current study was carried out at the University of Massachusetts at Boston (UMB), and explores the relationship between being a victim of IPV, self-esteem, and stigma across gender and other characteristics. Approximately 250 …

Visualizing The Unfamiliar: Ethnography Of An Emerging Moment In Cairo, Alexandra Schindler Jun 2012

Visualizing The Unfamiliar: Ethnography Of An Emerging Moment In Cairo, Alexandra Schindler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the artwork and practices of visual artists as they negotiate the current political and historical moment in Cairo. This project tries to disrupt the binary of state versus market that has often been used as an analytical lens through which to understand Egyptian contemporary art. Instead, this thesis argues that, through a politics of the everyday, artists are exploring and challenging categories of revolution and the political. Nonetheless, regulatory frameworks, such as the language of neoliberal governance, continue to be reproduced within these subversive spaces and moments. This project considers what sorts of questions can be asked …

Musical Protest And Revolutionary Media: Capital Transformation Among Artists, Activists, And Journalists During The 14 January Revolution, Nathanael Mannone Jun 2012

Musical Protest And Revolutionary Media: Capital Transformation Among Artists, Activists, And Journalists During The 14 January Revolution, Nathanael Mannone

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the transformations of cultural, symbolic and material capital (and power) both within and among the fields of music, activist, and journalism during the recent uprising in Tunisia. Analyzing a selection of Tunisian music juxtaposed to several ubiquitous conjectures in the news media, I also challenge the role music is purported to have played in these revolutions. In recent months, many in the international press and music industry have credited hip-hop artists in Tunisia as being a driving force in the 14 January Revolution. Many cite substantially increased levels of outspokenness among the artist community against the regime …

The Church In The Square: Negotiations Of Religion And Revolution At An Evangelical Church In Cairo, Egypt, Anna Dowell

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the Egyptian January 25, 2011 popular uprisings that deposed Hosni Mubarak from the presidency, youth and leaders from Kanisset Kasr el Dobara (KDEC) in Tahrir Square embarked on new and unpredictable political projects and activisms. This ethnographic study is an engagement with these new revolutionary negotiations on the part of the largest Protestant congregation in the Middle East. Using participant observation, focus groups, and interviews this research seeks to elucidate the ways that youth and leaders utilized institutionalized discourse, religious imagery, and relational networks in order to carve out a place in the Egyptian public sphere …

Trickle Down This Effect: Negotiations Of Culture, Care, And Freedom In Contemporary Cairo International Schools, Anne Caldwell Jun 2012

Trickle Down This Effect: Negotiations Of Culture, Care, And Freedom In Contemporary Cairo International Schools, Anne Caldwell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to analyze the contradictions and practices of a neoliberal ethical project among a privileged class in contemporary Cairo. The growing presence and availability of international schools in Cairo has reconfigured particular aspects of culture, care, and freedom for elite subjects over the past forty years. The main research question is: how are globalized notions of well being, self-realization, and personal fulfillment transmitted through the work of neoliberal discourse and staff at international schools in Cairo. It has been identified in this thesis that certain forms of care and responsibility are tightly bound and shaped by a neoliberal …

My Appalachian Experience: Reflections Of An Undergraduate Student On The Short-Term Service Trip And The Challenges It Presents For Social Justice Efforts, Samantha W. Lewandowski Ms. May 2012

My Appalachian Experience: Reflections Of An Undergraduate Student On The Short-Term Service Trip And The Challenges It Presents For Social Justice Efforts, Samantha W. Lewandowski Ms.

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

In this essay I explore the efficacy and value of short-term service trips by reflecting on a short-term service trip I took to Appalachia through my university. I consider how this trip impacted the way I think and feel about Appalachia. I argue that gaining feelings and knowledge from these trips is a necessary, yet insufficient, part of making them successful. These trips should also provide communities with service that benefits them and result in lasting structural change for them. However, as I experienced, students often encounter great challenges to doing social justice work both during and after their trips. …

Moving From Place To Place: Exploring The Complexities Of Being An Academic And Activist In/For Appalachia, Amanda Fickey May 2012

Moving From Place To Place: Exploring The Complexities Of Being An Academic And Activist In/For Appalachia, Amanda Fickey

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Maintaining the life of being both an academic and activist can be emotional and immensely difficult. In our efforts to achieve career advancement and to help others we may find ourselves moving between many places and living out the contradictions and tensions that result from such movement. Often forced to produce inaccessible, jargon filled articles, the majority of academics rarely find the opportunity to give back to the communities where they conduct research. How do we as academics then, come to terms with the work that we do? Can we truly be both activists and academics and, if so, in …

Eating Behaviors And Body Composition Among College Freshmen: The Effect Of Dietary And Commensal Culture On Biological Outcomes, Amelia E. Sancilio May 2012

Eating Behaviors And Body Composition Among College Freshmen: The Effect Of Dietary And Commensal Culture On Biological Outcomes, Amelia E. Sancilio

Lawrence University Honors Projects

As new college students become autonomous eaters, they may independently develop behaviors related to food that fulfill both biological and cultural purposes. I report here on the results of a biocultural, mixed-methods study of 21 students’ first term of college residence. Interview data and anthropometric measurements permit exploration of the interaction between a shift in participants’ cultural surroundings, physical condition, and food-related thoughts and actions. Participants’ goals of fulfilling their student responsibilities and maintaining social relationships predominantly dictated when, where, and what they ate, while their level of satisfaction with these behaviors was associated with whether their actions were consistent …

Homelessness: An Outcome Of Structural Cruelty, Bharat Rathod

Capstone Collection

In the current capitalist economic models, poverty and homelessness are an epidemic situation across the world. This research focused on the underlying causes of homelessness and poverty in India and the U.S., as well as developing suggestions to resolve the issues of homelessness in India. For this research I used literature reviews and interviews of the homeless; the interviews were conducted in Ahmedabad (India) and Brattleboro (U.S.). To analyze the data all the responses were entered into Excel format to discover patterns, themes and trends. The data was primarily qualitative in nature which led me to create three categories. According …
