Transition And Legitimation In Egypt's Nineteenth And Twentieth Dynasties: A Study Of The Reigns Of Siptah, Tausret, And Sethnakht, Kevin Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The transitional period between the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties is a period in Egyptian history about which little is understood, as scant archaeological evidence from this period survives to the present, certainly when compared to the embarrass de richesses we find from the first half of the former dynasty. It is, however, one of the more fascinating chapters of Egypt’s past, featuring Siptah, a young handicapped king of uncertain royal background, Bay, a non-royal official, who wields unprecedented power and ultimately seems to have paid the consequences for overreaching, and culminating with Tausret, a female, one of only a handful …

Defining “Third Force” Activity: The South African Truth And Reconciliation Commission And Eugene De Kock, John Grimes

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines claims about a purported “third force,” individuals and organizations that operated in South Africa during the “transitional period,” from 1990 to1994, who aimed to destabilize the country and prevent a democratic election. This paper focuses on the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and testimony contained in the official Amnesty Committee’s transcripts of former Colonel Eugene de Kock. This paper argues that the “third force” was not a designated government agency and former President F.W. de Klerk did not order “third force” violence. This paper further argues that numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations worked collectively to …

Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni May 2012

Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni

Student Theses and Dissertations

Vitamin C (ascorbate, AsA) is the most abundant water soluble antioxidant in plants and is essential for plant and human health. Ascorbate plays a key role in protecting plants from reactive oxygen species generated during normal metabolic processes and under stress conditions including wounding, pathogen attack, salt, heat, light, and ozone exposure. Jasmonates (JAs), a group of plants hormones involved in stress responses also protect plants from these stresses. There is evidence indicating that JAs modulate AsA content in plants. The recent discovery of the inositol pathway has opened possibilities for AsA enhancement via metabolic engineering in plants. Over-expression of …

I Was Born In A Rabbit Hole, Chris Davis

Student Theses and Dissertations

In the exhibition "I Was Born in a Rabbit Hole," I have continued to explore beauty, form, and balance. There is a strong Modernist tilt to the work that is most prominent in the use of materials. In this thesis, I will discuss how, despite the perceived mutual exclusivity of autobiographical information and Modernism, I explore autobiographical themes using a Greenbergian model.

The Taphonomy And Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Talkeetna Mountains Hadrosaur, Kevin P. Stack May 2012

The Taphonomy And Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Talkeetna Mountains Hadrosaur, Kevin P. Stack

Geosciences

The fossil record of hadrosauroids (Ornithopoda, Hadrosauroidea) from the Albian to Santonian is very sparse, with few described North American and Asian taxa compared to the diverse record of Campanian to Maastrichtian hadrosaurids. In 1994, the partial postcranial remains of a hadrosauriform dinosaur were found in the Matanuska Formation of southern Alaska. The Matanuska Formation is a thick succession of Albian¬to Maastrichtian-aged, dominantly marine, sediments deposited in a forearc basin along the actively accreting western North American margin. The Alaskan specimen is assigned a Turonian age based on molluscan biostratigraphy. The skeleton consists of postcranial elements including cervical, dorsal and …

Sedimentology Of Thermokarst Lakes Forming Within Yedoma On The Northern Seward Peninsula, Louise M. Farquharson May 2012

Sedimentology Of Thermokarst Lakes Forming Within Yedoma On The Northern Seward Peninsula, Louise M. Farquharson

Geosciences

Thermokarst lakes forming in yedoma (organic-rich permafrost containing massive syngenetic Pleistocene ice wedges) play an important role in periglacial landscape evolution. These lakes alter landscape elevation and topography, as well as redistribute upland sediment into lower basins. However, sediment deposition within yedoma thermokarst lakes is not well understood. Sedimentological, biogeochemical and macrofossil analyses enabled identification of five prominent fades in yedoma thermokarst lakes in my study region on the northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska. These include a Yedoma Taberal Silt facies situated below a sub-lacustrine unconformity, three types of basal facies and a Lacustrine Silt facies. A preliminary geomorphological model based …

Characterization Of Host-Pathogen Interactions In Two Model Pathogens: Francisella Tularensis And Simian Virus Sv40, Lisa K. Smith May 2012

Characterization Of Host-Pathogen Interactions In Two Model Pathogens: Francisella Tularensis And Simian Virus Sv40, Lisa K. Smith

Chemistry and Biochemistry

We sought to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction. The bacterium Francisella tularensis and simian virus SV40 represent two ideal model systems. Francisella tularensis is a facultative intracellular bacterium known to dampen the host immune response to infection. The Francisella pathogenicity island (FPI) encodes a cluster of 19 genes essential for full virulence and the observed change in immune response. We investigated the role of two FPI encoded proteins, PdpC and PdpD, on immune response. While both proteins affect a change, the effect of PdpD is more pronounced, and appears to play a role in modulation of host immune …

Effect Of Age And Vaccination On Extent And Spread Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection In C57bl/6 Mice, Taylor Eddens, Sarah Beaudoin, Amanda Steinberger, Christopher Scott Little, Dawn Shell, Benjamin Wizel, Brian J. Balin Phd, Kerin L. Fresa-Dillon May 2012

Effect Of Age And Vaccination On Extent And Spread Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection In C57bl/6 Mice, Taylor Eddens, Sarah Beaudoin, Amanda Steinberger, Christopher Scott Little, Dawn Shell, Benjamin Wizel, Brian J. Balin Phd, Kerin L. Fresa-Dillon

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular respiratory pathogen for humans. Infection by C. pneumoniae may be linked etiologically to extra-respiratory diseases of aging, especially atherosclerosis. We have previously shown that age promotes C. pneumoniae respiratory infection and extra-respiratory spread in BALB/c mice.

FINDINGS: Aged C57BL/6 mice had a greater propensity to develop chronic and/or progressive respiratory infections following experimental intranasal infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae when compared to young counterparts. A heptavalent CTL epitope minigene (CpnCTL7) vaccine conferred equal protection in the lungs of both aged and young mice. This vaccine was partially effective in protecting against C. …

Diet And Affinity From The Middle Neolithic To Early Bronze Age, Estremadura, Portugal: A Comparison Of Human Dental Remains From Feteira Ii And Bolores, Briana Christa Horwath

Anthropology

The social and political changes accompanying the transition from the Neolithic through Early Bronze Age in southwestern Iberia are reasonably well understood; much less is known about population movements and dietary changes that accompanied these transformations. To address possible population movements and dietary change, human dental remains from the Middle Neolithic through Late Neolithic site of Feteira II (3600-2900 B.C.E) and the Late Neolithic through the Early Bronze Age site of Bolores (2800-1800 B.C.E) will be used to examine diet and affinity. Two hypotheses are tested: the period of social change was associated with dietary change between individuals interred at …

Federalism: Theory, Policy, Law, Daniel Halberstam

Book Chapters

Even France now values local government. Over the past 30 years, top-down appointment of regional prefects and local administrators has given way to regionally elected councils and a revision of Article 1 of the French Constitution, which proclaims that today the state’s ‘organization is decentralized’. The British Parliament, too, has embraced local rule by devolving powers to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. And in China, decentralization has reached a point where some scholars speak of ‘de facto federalism’. A systematic study of the distribution of authority in 42 democracies found that over the past 50 years, regional authority grew in …

Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll May 2012

Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll

Marine Biology

Climate change and sea ice reduction in the Arctic may impact foraging of ice-associated predators. The goal of my thesis work was to examine interannual differences in the diet of ringed, bearded, spotted, and ribbon seals as described by stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios of muscle tissue and claws to assess foraging plasticity. Isotopic mixing models from muscle data were used to describe the proportional contribution of prey groups during 2003, 2008-2010. Results showed a higher proportional contribution of smelt (Osmeridae) and benthic prey to ringed and bearded seal diets in 2003 compared to 2008-2010. Seasonal keratin layers deposited …

Drosophila Activated Cdc42 Kinase Has An Anti-Apoptotic Function., Jessica A. Schoenherr, J Michelle Drennan, Juan S. Martinez, Madhusudana Rao Chikka, Mark C. Hall, Henry C. Chang, James C. Clemens

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Activated Cdc42 kinases (Acks) are evolutionarily conserved non-receptor tyrosine kinases. Activating somatic mutations and increased ACK1 protein levels have been found in many types of human cancers and correlate with a poor prognosis. ACK1 is activated by epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor signaling and functions to regulate EGF receptor turnover. ACK1 has additionally been found to propagate downstream signals through the phosphorylation of cancer relevant substrates. Using Drosophila as a model organism, we have determined thatDrosophila Ack possesses potent anti-apoptotic activity that is dependent on Ack kinase activity and is further activated by EGF receptor/Ras signaling. Ack anti-apoptotic signaling …

The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo May 2012

The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis represents the first comprehensive ethnoarchaeological study to date on the material culture of African mobile pastoralism, a way of life economically, culturally, and ideologically centered on the herding of livestock. In Africa, tens of millions of people today still rely on cattle-based pastoralism for survival in arid lands that are unsuitable for agricultural production. Our understanding of ancient pastoralism is still hampered, however, by a belief held by many that nomadic populations such as pastoralists are difficult to trace in the archaeological record. Results from ethnographic research among modern Samburu cattle pastoralists in Kenya in fact challenge common …
