New Technology - Old Law: Autonomous Vehicles And California's Insurance Framework, Robert Peterson May 2012

New Technology - Old Law: Autonomous Vehicles And California's Insurance Framework, Robert Peterson

Faculty Publications

In 1988 California voters adopted Proposition 103. The Proposition moved California into the group of states that regulates and requires prior approval of all automotive rates. Had it done only this, insuring autonomous vehicles would present only modest challenges.

Proposition 103, however, did much more. It entrenched into California insurance law a number of requirements that are incompatible with autonomous vehicles and the rapidly advancing technology they embody. The Proposition mandates the use of some specific rating factors that determine a vehicle owner’s premium. This rating system makes little sense when applied to self-driving vehicles. The Proposition also mandates a …

Trapping Of Rift Valley Fever (Rvf) Vectors Using Light Emitting Diode (Led) Cdc Traps In Two Arboviral Disease Hot Spots In Kenya, David P. Tchouassi, Rosemary Sang, Catherine L. Sole, Armanda D.S. Bastos, Lee W. Cohnstaedt, Baldwyn Torto May 2012

Trapping Of Rift Valley Fever (Rvf) Vectors Using Light Emitting Diode (Led) Cdc Traps In Two Arboviral Disease Hot Spots In Kenya, David P. Tchouassi, Rosemary Sang, Catherine L. Sole, Armanda D.S. Bastos, Lee W. Cohnstaedt, Baldwyn Torto

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Mosquitoes response to artificial lights including color has been exploited in trap designs for improved sampling of mosquito vectors. Earlier studies suggest that mosquitoes are attracted to specific wavelengths of light and thus the need to refine techniques to increase mosquito captures following the development of super-bright light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which emit narrow wavelengths of light or very specific colors. Therefore, we investigated if LEDs can be effective substitutes for incandescent lamps used in CDC light traps for mosquito surveillance, and if so, determine the best color for attraction of important Rift Valley Fever (RFV) vectors. Methods. The efficiency …

Traumatized Voices: The Transformation Of Personal Trauma Into Public Writing During The Romantic Era, Karalyne S. Lowery May 2012

Traumatized Voices: The Transformation Of Personal Trauma Into Public Writing During The Romantic Era, Karalyne S. Lowery

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Beginning as early as the 1790s and continuing throughout the nineteenth century, it is possible to trace in British literature a distinctive line of fascination among authors with what we now understand to be trauma and its profound effects on the lives and behaviors of it victims/survivors. With today’s neurological proof of the changes that take place in the brains of traumatized individuals, it stands to reason that these changes have taken place in every century, not just the century in which we have had the technology to view it or the vocabulary to describe it. This means that psychological …

Approaches To Control Nitrate Pollution In The San Joaquin Watershed, Misgana K. Muleta, Stephen Clayton

Physics

Modeling of the San Joaquin valley using SWAT can give a comprehensive overview of hydrologic traits of the San Joaquin River and its tributaries, specifically for nutrients like nitrate. The San Joaquin valley is a site of intense modeling interest and policy making, as the San Joaquin River joins the Sacramento River to feed into the Delta. The environmental impact of dissolved oxygen on aquatic life on the Delta is a particularly key concern (Quinn 2000). The San Joaquin watershed also represents considerable investment in agriculture on the valley floor and has been studied for nitrate, sediment, and salinity concerns …

'I Am Rooted, But I Flow': Virginia Woolf And 20th Century Thought, Emily Lauren Hanna May 2012

'I Am Rooted, But I Flow': Virginia Woolf And 20th Century Thought, Emily Lauren Hanna

Scripps Senior Theses

My thesis is about Virginia Woolf’s novels, Mrs. Dalloway, The Waves, and To the Lighthouse. I examine these novels in relation to the theories of Henri Bergson, William James, and Sigmund Freud, and the groundwork of Modernism. I relate Woolf's use of water imagery and stream of consciousness technique to Bergson’s theory of “la durée,” or psychological, subjective time, James’ “stream of consciousness” theory in psychology, and Freud’s theory of the “oceanic” feeling of religious experience.

The Humble Worm Caenorhabditis Elegans Conditions Under Simulated Microgravity, Sedigheh Heydari May 2012

The Humble Worm Caenorhabditis Elegans Conditions Under Simulated Microgravity, Sedigheh Heydari

Theses (Pre-2016)

Exemplar organisms seemed very useful in understanding the biological effects of the space environment. They can be employed as a model system to address essential questions in biology. One of the advantages of the model system is that many complex approaches can be applied to address questions of interest. This humble C. elegans roundworm has many benefits for organic studies in space; it is tiny, requiring little space; it is a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite that can exist and reproduce in a designated liquid or agar media. C. elegans in liquid cultures seeded with Escherichia coli OP50 were exposed to simulated microgravity …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the causative agent of porcine epidemic diarrhea, a highly contagious enteric disease of swine. The Spike (S) protein is one of the main structural proteins of PEDV capable of inducing neutralizing antibodies in vivo. Herein, we generated three distinct DNA constructs in the eukaryotic expression plasmid pVAX1; one encoding the S protein [pVAX1-(PEDV-S)], the second encoding the N-terminal fragment (S1) [pVAX1-(PEDV-S1)] containing potent antigenic sites, and the third expressing the porcine interleukin-18 (pIL-18) [pVAX1-(IL-18)]. Immunofluorescence assays in BHK-21 cells demonstrated successful protein expression from all 3 constructs. Kunming mice were injected separately with each …

Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes May 2012

Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes

Torrington Articles

Race, we are told, is a “social construction.” If this is so, Thomas Jefferson was its principal architect. Jefferson consciously framed his only published book, Notes on the State of Virginia, to check the rising status of Africans and to combat growing critiques of slavery from America’s European friends. Jefferson did this by importing the slaveholder’s sense of slaves as chattel into an Enlightenment world view, providing a metaphysical foundation for prejudice by transmuting the traditional Christian concept of the saved vs. the damned into material and aesthetic terms. Recasting in quasi-scientific language the ancient doctrine of the mark …
