The subject invention concerns materials and methods for inhibiting the Akt/PKB pathway. In one embodiment, a compound of the invention inhibits kinase activity and/or phosphorylation levels of Akt proteins. The subject invention also concerns methods for inhibiting or killing a cancer cell or other cell in which expression of an Akt protein is elevated or constitutively active, comprising contacting the cell with an effective amount of a compound of formula I. The subject invention also concerns methods for treating cancer or a tumor in a person or animal comprising administering all effective amount of a compound of formula I to …

Biomechanical Testing On Cadaveric Spines For Different Treatments That Affect Lumbar Stability, Sabrina Alejandra Gonzalez Blohm
Biomechanical Testing On Cadaveric Spines For Different Treatments That Affect Lumbar Stability, Sabrina Alejandra Gonzalez Blohm
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stenosis is one of the most common causes for spinal surgery. Laminectomy decompression and fusion are surgical procedures prescribed for this condition. The intention of this work was to investigate the effects of a laminectomy decompression, followed by fusion, on a lumbar functional spinal unit (FSU) through in vitro dynamic (±8Nm at 0.125Hz) and quasi-static (±7.5Nm at 0.1Hz) biomechanical tests, for flexion, extension, bending and rotation motions.
Six FSUs where disarticulated from four human cadaveric lumbar spines (63 ± 12 years) and were tested under the following sequence: (1) intact, (2) laminectomy decompression, and (3) Pedicle Screw System (PSS), using …
Seeing (The Other) Through A Terministic Screen Of Spirituality: Emotional Integrity As A Strategy For Facilitating Identification, Jarron Benjamin Slater
Seeing (The Other) Through A Terministic Screen Of Spirituality: Emotional Integrity As A Strategy For Facilitating Identification, Jarron Benjamin Slater
Theses and Dissertations
Although philosopher Robert Solomon and rhetorician Kenneth Burke wrote in isolation from one another, they discuss similar concepts and ideas. Since its introduction in Burke's A Rhetoric of Motives, identification has always been important to rhetorical theory, and recent studies in emotion, such as Solomon's, provide new insight into modes of identification—that human beings can identify with one another on an emotional level. This paper places Solomon and Burke in conversation with one another, arguing that both terministic screens and emotions are ways of seeing, acting, engaging, and judging. Hence, terministic screens and emotions affect ethos, or character, both …
Age-Related Changes In The Daily Rhythm Of Photoreceptor Functioning And Circuitry In A Melatonin-Proficient Mouse Strain, Kenkichi Baba, Francesca Mazzoni, Sharon Owino, Susana Contreras-Alcantara, Enrica Strettoi, Gianluca Tosini
Age-Related Changes In The Daily Rhythm Of Photoreceptor Functioning And Circuitry In A Melatonin-Proficient Mouse Strain, Kenkichi Baba, Francesca Mazzoni, Sharon Owino, Susana Contreras-Alcantara, Enrica Strettoi, Gianluca Tosini
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
Retinal melatonin is involved in the modulation of many important retinal functions. Our previous studies have shown that the viability of photoreceptors and ganglion cells is reduced during aging in mice that lack melatonin receptor type 1. This demonstrates that melatonin signaling is important for the survival of retinal neurons. In the present study, we investigate the effects of aging on photoreceptor physiology and retinal organization in CH3-f+/+ mice, a melatonin proficient mouse strain. Our data indicate that the amplitude of the a and b waves of the scotopic and photopic electroretinogram decreases with age. Moreover, the daily rhythm in …
Predator's Tongue, Tara Mae Mulroy
Predator's Tongue, Tara Mae Mulroy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Predator’s Tongue, a collection of poetry centering on the theme of predators and prey, explores the effects of trauma and violence—physical, psychic, sexual, emotional, and mental— through free verse narratives. The sharpness in the writing forces the reader to see the fluidity of these predator/prey relationships—wounded people wound people. The section breaks of this work serve to highlight growth and development: from “animal,” giving in to base impulses and horror, to “child,” beginning to learn, respond, and adapt, and to “woman,” learning how to be an adult in adult relationships.

Agent-Based Modeling Of Emergency Building Evacuation, Vi Q. Ha
Agent-Based Modeling Of Emergency Building Evacuation, Vi Q. Ha
Master's Theses
Panic during emergency building evacuation can cause crowd stampede, resulting in serious injuries and casualties. Agent-based methods have been successfully employed to investigate the collective human behavior during emergency evacuation in cases where the configurational space is extremely simple - usually one rectangular room - but not in evacuations of multi-room or multi-floor buildings. This implies that the effect of the complexity of building architecture on the collective behavior of the agents during evacuation has not been fully investigated. Here, we employ a system of self-moving particles whose motion is governed by the social-force model to investigate the effect of …

The Primary Right, Carter Dillard
Pace Environmental Law Review
This essay seeks to fill a gap in the law: the conspicuous absence among commonly accepted civil and political human rights theories of any particular right that tells us where the other rights ought to exist – not the jurisdictions in which they apply, but what the physical world those other rights occupy ought to look like. In other words, what sort of environment do humans have a right to?
Modernizing The Russian District Heating Sector: Financing Energy Efficiency And Renewable Energy Investments Under The New Federal Heat Law, Anatole Boute
Pace Environmental Law Review
This article analyzes the new legislative basis that the 2010 Federal Heat Law – together with the Federal Energy Efficiency Law – creates for the regulation of tariffs in the heating sector. The central question of this legal analysis relates to the financial viability of energy efficiency and renewable energy investments in the heating sector. Does the new legislative basis for the regulation of heat tariffs in Russia provide investors with the possibility to recover the capital costs of their energy efficiency and renewable energy investments? Does the new law create an adequate tariff structure to tackle the pressing modernization …

Energy-Saving Hypothermia Reduces Flight Ability In Mourning Doves, Jennie M. Carr, Steven L. Lima
Energy-Saving Hypothermia Reduces Flight Ability In Mourning Doves, Jennie M. Carr, Steven L. Lima
Symposium 2012
Overwintering birds are frequently exposed to thermal challenges that can quickly decrease energy reserves, thus leading to an increase in the risk of starvation. During these periods of energetic hardship, many avian species use nocturnal hypothermia to conserve energy that would otherwise be lost remaining warm throughout the night (McKechnie & Lovegrove 2002). However, a cool body temperature (Tb) may limit a bird’s ability to monitor the environment and may slow their response to a potential threat. Thus, birds likely trade-off between the benefits of energy-saving hypothermia and the potential costs of reduced behavioral responsiveness to predators (Welton et al. …

Projecting Pornography And Mapping Modernity In Mexico City, Ageeth Sluis
Projecting Pornography And Mapping Modernity In Mexico City, Ageeth Sluis
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Drawing on Elizabeth Grosz’s and Doreen Massey’s insights that place and gender are mutually constitutive, this article examines the articulation among the embodied city, sexual desire, and changing gender norms in the wake of the Mexican Revolution. At this time, a newly governing revolutionary elite sought to reinvigorate and “civilize” Mexico City through a series of urban reforms and public works, partly in response to their concern over women in public as a social problem. By analyzing depictions of female nudity as conversant with urban landscapes in the banned magazine Vea, the author argues that pornography connected Mexico City …
