BACKGROUND: High shear force critically regulates platelet adhesion and thrombus formation during ischemic vascular events. To identify genetic factors that influence platelet thrombus formation under high shear stress, we performed a genome-wide association study and confirmatory experiments in human and animal platelets.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Closure times in the shear-dependent platelet function analyzer (PFA)-100 were measured on healthy, nondiabetic European Americans (n=125) and blacks (n=116). A genome-wide association (P

CONCLUSIONS: We show for the first time that (1) platelets contain supervillin; (2) platelet thrombus formation in the PFA-100 is associated with human SVIL variants and low SVIL expression; and (3) …

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold Jun 2012

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This piece makes the claim that rhetoric is first philosophy--before philosophy, epistemology, ontology, or any other field--or that rhetoric is, at the least, on equal footing as these fields because:

empathy--and thusly the impulse for communication--is physiologically hardwired into humans; special distinctions between human and animal are largely artificial constructions, as is evidenced by neurosciences; "hard" science, in the form of neurosciences, is providing entrance points & opportunities for rhetoric to raise its status within the academy; and said neurosciences, in addition to empathy studies, have shown strong evidence supporting linguistic and evolutionary links between humans and other species, thereby …

Creating A Materials Samples Collection To Support The Engineering Curriculum, Dee Magnoni, Ananya Kejriwal, Charles Offenbacher Jun 2012

Creating A Materials Samples Collection To Support The Engineering Curriculum, Dee Magnoni, Ananya Kejriwal, Charles Offenbacher

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Engineers fundamentally solve problems. Engineering students are obtaining the education necessary to develop problem-solving skills and tools. Olin College of Engineering was founded on the philosophy that a hands-on, entrepreneurial, design-centered engineering education would create engineers ready to solve current and emerging problems.

Olin’s library has embraced the college’s philosophy through the development of a realia, or learning objects collection that supports multiple intelligences. Moving beyond these learning objects, library staff wanted to build a collection of materials samples that enhance the engineering curriculum, and specifically design, sustainability and materials science courses. Students use the objects to make project decisions …

A Genetic Study Of Ssv1, The Prototypical Fusellovirus, Eric Iverson, Kenneth M. Stedman Jun 2012

A Genetic Study Of Ssv1, The Prototypical Fusellovirus, Eric Iverson, Kenneth M. Stedman

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Viruses of thermophilic Archaea are unique in both their structures and genomic sequences. The most widespread and arguably best studied are the lemon-shaped fuselloviruses. The spindle-shaped virus morphology is unique to Archaea but widespread therein. The best studied fusellovirus is SSV1 from Beppu, Japan, which infects Sulfolobus solfataricus. Very little is known about the function of the genes in the SSV1 genome. Recently we have developed genetic tools to analyze these genes. In this study, we have deleted three SSV1 open reading frames (ORFs) ranging from completely conserved to poorly conserved: VP2, d244, and b129. Deletion of the universally conserved …

Transcendental Thermodynamics, Richard E. Morel, George Fleck Jun 2012

Transcendental Thermodynamics, Richard E. Morel, George Fleck

Kahn Institute Projects

Thermodynamics is often viewed as a narrow, introspective discipline, trapped by its origins in the 18th and 19th centuries. By dramatic contrast, we show that the Fourth Law of Thermodynamics provides explanations and interpretations of all natural events, extending across artificial boundaries of tradition- al academic disciplines. The Fourth Law of Thermodynamics states that far-from-equilibrium systems increase entropy at the maximum rate available to them. This broadly inclusive paradigm applies to systems from molecules, to organisms, to the biosphere. The Fourth Law is the Law of Evolution. All systems that communicate with their environment exhibit self-organization and self-optimization, enabling the …

Exposure To Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In Utero Provides Greater Protection Against Prostate Cancer Risk Factors In Tramp Mice Than Exposure Beginning At 6 Weeks, Heather Schofield Lindsay Jun 2012

Exposure To Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In Utero Provides Greater Protection Against Prostate Cancer Risk Factors In Tramp Mice Than Exposure Beginning At 6 Weeks, Heather Schofield Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men in the United States. Generally, an extended period of time is needed for a mutation to develop into a full scale tumor. Because of this long latency period, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet, may play an important role in the development and progression of the disease. Diet is one factor that has been implicated in the risk for developing prostate cancer. We previously showed that diets high in soy isoflavones and selenium (Se) decreased androgen receptor expression and expression of androgen regulated genes in healthy rat prostates. …

Coordinating Environmental Genomics And Geochemistry Reveals Metabolic Transitions In A Hot Spring Ecosystem, Wesley D. Swingley, D'Arcy R. Meyer-Dombard, Everett Shock, Eric B. Alsop, Heinz D. Falenski, Jeff R. Havig, Jason Raymond

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

We have constructed a conceptual model of biogeochemical cycles and metabolic and microbial community shifts within a hot spring ecosystem via coordinated analysis of the ‘‘Bison Pool’’ (BP) Environmental Genome and a complementary contextual geochemical dataset of ,75 geochemical parameters. 2,321 16S rRNA clones and 470 megabases of environmental sequence data were produced from biofilms at five sites along the outflow of BP, an alkaline hot spring in Sentinel Meadow (Lower Geyser Basin) of Yellowstone National Park. This channel acts as a .22 m gradient of decreasing temperature, increasing dissolved oxygen, and changing availability of biologically important chemical species, such …

Riding The Wave: Move Beyond Text, Uwe Rosemann, Irina Sens Jun 2012

Riding The Wave: Move Beyond Text, Uwe Rosemann, Irina Sens

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The European High Level Expert Group on Scientific data (2010) has formulated the challenges for a scientific infrastructure to be reached by 2030: “Our vision is a scientific e‐infrastructure that supports seamless access, use, re‐use, and trust of data. In a sense, the physical and technical infrastructure becomes invisible and the data themselves become the infrastructure – a valuable asset, on which science, technology, the economy and society can advance”.

Here, “data” is not restricted to primary data but also includes all non‐textual material (graphs, spectra, videos, 3D objects, etc.). The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) must …

Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle Jun 2012

Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper is based on a case study of how the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is actively using library statistics to promote and advocate for better library services for its users in a new digital environment.

At CPUT Libraries we realized that we need to promote our activities, determine our return on investment and show what value we add to the lives of our clients. This could be determined by the increase in the quality of work done and services used by the different user market segments. Four market segments have been identified namely, CPUT management, library staff, …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The basal ganglia play a central role in regulating the response selection abilities that are critical formental flexibility. In neocortical areas, higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels are associated with increased gray matter volume, and these volumetric differences mediate enhanced cognitive performance in a variety of tasks. Here we examine whether cardiorespiratory fitness correlates with the volume of the subcortical nuclei that make up the basal ganglia and whether this relationship predicts cognitive flexibility in older adults. Structural MRI was used to determine the volume of the basal ganglia nuclei in a group of older, neurologically healthy individuals (mean age 66 years, …

Baghdad Science Journal

This study evaluated the functional response of the larva of the predator Chrysoperla carnea by offering varying densities of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) . Results showed conformity with type–II functional response, where the number of prey killed approaches asymptote hyperbolically as prey density increases (declining proportion of prey killed or the inverse density dependent) till it reached the stability stage determined by handling time and predator satiation. Also, the values of attack rate and handling time changed with age progress for both predator and prey. It has been observed an increase in the attack rate and reduction in handling …
