Mechanical Stretch And Pi3k Signaling Link Cell Migration And Proliferation To Coordinate Epithelial Tubule Morphogenesis In The Zebrafish Pronephros, Aleksandr Vasilyev, Yan Liu, Nathan Hellman, Narendra Pathak, Iain A. Drummond

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Organ development leads to the emergence of organ function, which in turn can impact developmental processes. Here we show that fluid flow-induced collective epithelial migration during kidney nephron morphogenesis induces cell stretch that in turn signals epithelial proliferation. Increased cell proliferation was dependent on PI3K signaling. Inhibiting epithelial proliferation by blocking PI3K or CDK4/Cyclin D1 activity arrested cell migration prematurely and caused a marked overstretching of the distal nephron tubule. Computational modeling of the involved cell processes predicted major morphological and kinetic outcomes observed experimentally under a variety of conditions. Overall, our findings suggest that kidney development is a recursive …

  • What is the central question of this study?

In human arteries involved in the regulation of muscle blood flow, there is a lack of data about whether acidosis alters vascular sensitivity to vasoactive agents, as well as altering endothelium dependent vasorelaxation. Little is known about the interaction of metabolites and vascular function in human skeletal muscle feed arteries.

  • •

What is the main finding and its importance?

Increasing acidosis attenuated the response and sensitivity of the arteries to phenylephrine; this effect was selective to the receptor over smooth muscle.

Acidosis did not alter endothelium dependent vasorelaxation. Impaired vasoconstriction coupled with …

Student Autonomy: A Case Study Of Intrinsic Motivation In The Art Classroom, Downi Griner Jul 2012

Student Autonomy: A Case Study Of Intrinsic Motivation In The Art Classroom, Downi Griner

Theses and Dissertations

How might a curriculum based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) influence student motivation and art making in a 9th grade art classroom? The researcher devised a negotiated curriculum called The Master Artist Program based on the SDT theory of intrinsic motivation. The implementation of this curriculum was designed to explore the question of how a curriculum based on SDT theory would influence student motivation and art making in a 9th grade art classroom. This curriculum was implemented in a ninth grade art class on an optional basis for the course of nine weeks. The results of data analysis, illustrated by relevant …

I(A) Channels Encoded By Kv1.4 And Kv4.2 Regulate Neuronal Firing In The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus And Circadian Rhythms In Locomotor Activity, Daniel Granados-Fuentes, Aaron J. Norris, Yarimar Carrasquillo, Jeanne M. Nerbonne, Erik D. Herzog

Open Access Publications

Neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) display coordinated circadian changes in electrical activity that are critical for daily rhythms in physiology, metabolism, and behavior. SCN neurons depolarize spontaneously and fire repetitively during the day and hyperpolarize, drastically reducing firing rates, at night. To explore the hypothesis that rapidly activating and inactivating A-type (I(A)) voltage-gated K(+) (Kv) channels, which are also active at subthreshold membrane potentials, are critical regulators of the excitability of SCN neurons, we examined locomotor activity and SCN firing in mice lacking Kv1.4 (Kv1.4(-/-)), Kv4.2 (Kv4.2(-/-)), or Kv4.3 (Kv4.3(-/-)), the pore-forming (α) subunits of I(A) channels. Mice lacking …

Re-Examining Green Revolution Diffusion And Factor/Input Markets In Bangladesh After Market Liberalization, S Rahman, Ia Begum, Mj Alam

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper re‐examines the effect of green revolution (GR) diffusion on factor/inputs demand in Bangladesh using an empirical model that allows for simultaneous determination of factors influencing adoption of GR technology at the current mature stage, as well as access to irrigation. Results reveal some alignments with conventional wisdom as well as few surprises. For example, while an increased demand for major inputs is expected, an increased demand for organic manure is an unexpected positive outcome. The GR adoption rate is significantly higher in villages with access to irrigation and fertile soils and, surprisingly, in infrastructurally underdeveloped villages. Together with …

Evaluation Of Cerebellar-Cortical Circuitry Using Rodent Models: Relevance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tiffany Danielle Rogers Jul 2012

Evaluation Of Cerebellar-Cortical Circuitry Using Rodent Models: Relevance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tiffany Danielle Rogers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While the etiology of autism is unknown, current research indicates that abnormalities of the cerebellum, now believed to be involved in cognitive function, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are associated with autism. The current paper proposes that impaired cerebello-cortical circuitry could, at least in part, underlie autistic symptoms. The evidence linking the cerebellum to autism and rodent models useful for elucidating etiological factors in autism as well as their potential impact on cerebello-cortical circuitry are reviewed. Recent research has demonstrated in wildtype mice that stimulation of the dentate nucleus of the cerebellum (DN) evokes dopamine release in the medial prefrontal …

Tourism, Agriculture, And Identity: Comparing Grenada And Dominica, Velvet Nelson Jul 2012

Tourism, Agriculture, And Identity: Comparing Grenada And Dominica, Velvet Nelson

Journal of Tourism Insights

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between agriculture and tourism in the promotion of economic identity at the turn of the twentieth century and again at the turn of the twenty-first in the case of two Eastern Caribbean islands: Grenada and Dominica. From the beginnings of export-oriented agriculture in the Caribbean until recent decades, agriculture was the dominant economic activity in the islands. Consequently, the economic identity of these islands has also been tied to their agricultural produce. Initially the emphasis placed on sugarcane cultivation in the region gave rise to the idea of the “sugar …

Apparent Digestible Protein, Energy, Phosphorus, And Amino Acid Availability Of A Novel Strain Of Soybean Meal For Juvenile Cobia, Rachycentron Canadum, Drew A. Davis

Open Access Theses

Apparent digestibility coefficient values of a novel strain of non-GMO soybean meal, Navita®, and an industry standard soybean meal (defatted soybean meal/roasted solvent-extracted), were evaluated for juvenile cobia, Rachycentron canadum. During the course of this 4-week feed trial, it was determined that Navita® has a high degree of protein and energy digestibility as well as amino acid availability, outperforming the regular soybean meal for nearly every analyzed component of the feed. Crude protein digestibility for the ingredients Navita® and regular soybean meal were calculated to be 81.83% and 68.51%, respectively, while energy digestibility values were found to be 62.65% and …

Family Ties And Plant Invasions: Do Closely Related Native And Exotic Fern Species Differ In Mycorrhizal Colonization?, Rebekah M. Outman

Open Access Theses

Although invasive plant species are known to decrease biodiversity and adversely affect native plant communities, factors that contribute to invasiveness are still poorly understood. Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are an important biotic factor in many ecosystems, but evidence conflicts regarding their effects on invasive plant success. Nine species from four confamilial groups of native and exotic ferns in southern Florida were examined to determine their extent of mycorrhizal colonization. The mycorrhizal status of three species (Pteris bahamensis, Thelypteris dentata, and Thelypteris kunthii) was determined for the first time. Significant differences in AM colonization were found among confamilial groups. No significant differences …

PAD affects 7% of all people over 60 years of age, and 23% of all people over the age of 80. Over time, PAD progresses in severity, leading to critical limb ischemia (CLI), defined as an ankle-brachial index of 0.40 or less. Surgical bypass and other endovascular techniques are capable of providing temporary relief from symptoms of CLI in some subjects. However, recurrence of the disease is seen in over 30% of patients following surgical stent or graft intervention. As of yet there are no effective pharmacological agents available to treat CLI. Studies in this laboratory have defined a novel …

Managing Invasive Species: How Much Do We Spend?, Tobias Schwörer, Rebekka Federer, Howard Ferren, N/A Alaska Sealife Center

ISER Reports

Invasive species: they’re along roadways and up mountain trails; they’re in lakes and along the coast; chances are they’re in your yard. You might not recognize them for what they are—plants or animals not native to Alaska, brought here accidentally or intentionally, crowding out local species. This problem is in the early stages here, compared with what has happened in other parts of the country. But a number of invasive species are already here, and scientists think more are on the way. These species can damage ecosystems and economies—so it’s important to understand their potential economic and other effects now, …

Silica-Based Antibacterial And Antifungal Nanoformulation, Swadeshmukul Santra Jul 2012

Silica-Based Antibacterial And Antifungal Nanoformulation, Swadeshmukul Santra

UCF Patents

A silica-based nanoformulation and method is used to treat citrus canker, inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, and add nutrients to soil used for agricultural purposes. The nanotechnology-enabled copper-loaded, silica nanoformulation (CuSiNP/NG) design is a "revolutionary re-invention" of Cu for safe application because it provides a formulation with maximum abundance ionic Cu, provides sustained and optimal Cu ion release for long-term disease protection, better adherence to plant surfaces and structural surfaces due to gel-based nanostructureof CuSiNG, thus avoiding multiple spray applications and reducing the amount of Cu used in comparison to existing Cu compounds without compromising anitbaterial activity. Thus, …

Integer Sparse Distributed Memory And Modular Composite Representation, Javier Snaider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Challenging AI applications, such as cognitive architectures, natural language understanding, and visual object recognition share some basic operations including pattern recognition, sequence learning, clustering, and association of related data. Both the representations used and the structure of a system significantly influence which tasks and problems are most readily supported. A memory model and a representation that facilitate these basic tasks would greatly improve the performance of these challenging AI applications.Sparse Distributed Memory (SDM), based on large binary vectors, has several desirable properties: auto-associativity, content addressability, distributed storage, robustness over noisy inputs that would facilitate the implementation of challenging AI applications. …

Small Molecules As Negative Allosteric Modulators Of Alpha7 Nachrs, Osama Alwassil Jul 2012

Small Molecules As Negative Allosteric Modulators Of Alpha7 Nachrs, Osama Alwassil

Theses and Dissertations

Alpha7 Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in essential physiological functions and play a role in disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. MD-354 (3-chlorophenylguanidine; 21), the first small–molecule negative allosteric modulator (NAM) at alpha7 nAChRs, served as a lead in developing structure–activity relationships for NAMs at a7 nAChRs. MD-354 (21) also binds at 5-HT3 receptors. Analogs of MD-354 with structural features detrimental to 5-HT3 receptor affinity were evaluated in patch-clamp recordings and an aniline N-methyl analog resulted in a more potent and selective NAM than MD-354. A new N-methyl series of compounds was synthesized in which the 3-position was replaced …

Windowing The Past: A Seventeenth Century Technological Archive And Its Electronic Exploitation, Alasdair Paterson Jul 2012

Windowing The Past: A Seventeenth Century Technological Archive And Its Electronic Exploitation, Alasdair Paterson

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The management of manuscript collections - unique, irreplaceable, fragile - has historically struggled to reconcile preservation with access. Academic librarians know only too well the uneasy negotiation between the conflicting imperatives of security and availability, conservation and use, which comes to define a level of public service in this area.

It is therefore not surprising that here, as elsewhere, the potential of new electronic media is increasingly a matter for investigation. Manuscripts transcribed, keyboarded or scanned into microcomputer systems become "virtual" manuscripts, no longer unique or fragile, potentially unlimited as to time, place, frequency and volume of use, retrievable through …
