Recording And Analysis Of Transient Otoacoustic Emissions During Outer Ear Canal Pressure Compensation, Moises Perez
Recording And Analysis Of Transient Otoacoustic Emissions During Outer Ear Canal Pressure Compensation, Moises Perez
Open Access Dissertations
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) are sounds generated by an active process in the auditory system’s cochlea. It has been widely accepted that the generation of OAEs is a precursor for healthy hearing. The measurement of evoked OAEs can be used to determine the general health of the cochlea and basilar membrane's response and sound transmission forward and backwards through the inner ear. OAEs are commonly used for newborn infant hearing screening where many middle ear pathologies are first detected. In most cases, secondary screening tests such as tympanometry are not conducted unless the patient has failed the OAE screening first. Increases …

Hemochorial placentation is characterized by trophoblast-directed uterine spiral artery remodeling. The rat and human both possess hemochorial placentation and exhibit remarkable similarities regarding the depth of trophoblast invasion and the extent of uterine vascular modification. In vitro and in vivo research methodologies have been established using the rat as an animal model to investigate the extravillous/invasive trophoblast lineage. With these research approaches, two signaling pathways controlling the differentiation and invasion of the trophoblast cell lineage have been identified: i) hypoxia/hypoxia inducible factor and ii) phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT/Fos like antigen 1. Dissection of these pathways has facilitated identification of fundamental regulators of …

Data Consistency And Conflict Avoidance In A Multi-User Cax Environment, Robert Aaron Moncur
Data Consistency And Conflict Avoidance In A Multi-User Cax Environment, Robert Aaron Moncur
Theses and Dissertations
This research presents a new method to preserve data consistency in a multi-user CAx environment. The new method includes three types of constraints which work by constraining and controlling both features and users across an entire multi-user CAx platform. The first type of constraint includes locking or reserving features to enable only one user at a time to edit a given feature. The second type of constraint, collaborative feature constraints, allows flexible constraining of each individual feature in a model, and the data that defines it. The third type of constraint, collaborative user constraints, allows the constraining of user permissions …

Selaginella Moellendorffii Telomeres: Conserved And Unique Features In An Ancient Land Plant Lineage, Eugene V. Shakirov, Dorothy E. Shippen
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Telomeres, the essential terminal regions of linear eukaryotic chromosomes, consist of G-rich DNA repeats bound by a plethora of associated proteins. While the general pathways of telomere maintenance are evolutionarily conserved, individual telomere complex components show remarkable variation between eukaryotic lineages and even within closely related species. The recent genome sequencing of the lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii and the availability of an ever-increasing number of flowering plant genomes provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the molecular and functional evolution of telomere components from the early evolving non-seed plants to the more developmentally advanced angiosperms. Here we analyzed telomere sequence in S. …
Dietitian’S Problem Solving Knowledge To Promote And Support Breastfeeding, Cassandra L. Dytrych
Dietitian’S Problem Solving Knowledge To Promote And Support Breastfeeding, Cassandra L. Dytrych
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
As a result of ongoing efforts in the U.S. to promote breastfeeding as the normal way to nourish an infant, breastfeeding initiation rates are higher than they have been in decades. As the experts on food and nutrition through the lifecycle, registered dietitians (RDs) should be knowledgeable to promote and support breastfeeding. It is not well known if RDs have this knowledge. The purpose of this study was to determine the current knowledge of RDs about breastfeeding, the types of professional opportunities RDs have to promote and support breastfeeding, and the level of education RDs have to deal with breastfeeding …

Invasive Seaweed: Global And Regional Law And Policy Responses, Meinhard Doelle, Moira Mcconnell, David Vanderzwaag
Research Papers, Working Papers, Conference Papers
We consider law and policy responses to invasive seaweeds at global and regional levels Key global regimes considered include the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea the Convention on Biological Diversity the Ramsar Convention and the Bonn Convention on Migratory Species Contributions from the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Maritime Organization are also considered in the global context At a regional level examples of efforts in North America and Europe are offered to illustrate challenges and opportunities for regional responses to invasive seaweeds We conclude with law and policy recommendations most notably the need …

The Effect Of Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Activation Of Ppar Pathways In A Mouse Model Of Aging, Lloye M. Dillon
The Effect Of Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Activation Of Ppar Pathways In A Mouse Model Of Aging, Lloye M. Dillon
Open Access Dissertations
Aging is the progressive decline in cellular, tissue and organ function. The mitochondrial theory of aging suggests that the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, loss of organ function and consequently a decrease in lifespan. This theory is appealing as there is a correlation between age-dependent alterations in mtDNA and an increased risk for developing cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and myopathy. To further investigate the role of mtDNA mutations in aging, the mtDNA mutator mouse, a mouse model with a proof-reading deficient mtDNA polymerase γ (POLG) was created. These mice have a premature aging phenotype and …
