Characterization Of Chemotype And Aggressiveness Of Nebraska Isolates Of Fusarium Graminearum, Anita Panthi Dec 2012

Characterization Of Chemotype And Aggressiveness Of Nebraska Isolates Of Fusarium Graminearum, Anita Panthi

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused mainly by Fusarium graminearum, is a devastating disease of wheat and other small grain cereals. FHB lowers grain yield and quality and contaminates grain with mycotoxins, predominantly deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated derivatives 3-ADON and 15-ADON. Forty one Fusarium isolates collected from grain elevators and wheat fields in Nebraska in 2009 and 2010 were sequenced for molecular identification. Forty isolates were identified as F. graminearum and one isolate was identified as F. culmorum. Seventy seven F. graminearum isolates collected from grain elevators and wheat fields in Nebraska from 2007 to 2010 were tested …

Alteration Of Behavior By Desert Bighorn Sheep From Human Recreation And Desert Bighorn Sheep Survival In Canyonlands National Park: 2002 - 2010, Kanalu K. Sproat Dec 2012

Alteration Of Behavior By Desert Bighorn Sheep From Human Recreation And Desert Bighorn Sheep Survival In Canyonlands National Park: 2002 - 2010, Kanalu K. Sproat

Theses and Dissertations

Human encroachment into wilderness areas can influence the persistence of wildlife populations by decreasing and degrading habitat, displacement, and decreasing survival. For bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), some human activities are detrimental, causing both physiological stress and habitat abandonment. Between 1979 and 2000, human recreation has increased over 300% in areas occupied by desert bighorn sheep (O. c. nelsonii) in southeastern Utah. We investigated if an increase in human activity in areas used by bighorns affected their behavior. We observed 34 bighorn sheep using focal-animal sampling for >14 hrs to compare time spent grazing and scanning between areas of high and …

Diffuse Traumatic Axonal Injury Within The Visual System: Implications For Visual Pathway Reorganization, Jiaqiong Wang Dec 2012

Diffuse Traumatic Axonal Injury Within The Visual System: Implications For Visual Pathway Reorganization, Jiaqiong Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury is a major health problem with much of its morbidity associated with traumatic axonal injury (TAI). To date, significant insight has been gained into the initiating pathogenesis of TAI. However, the specific anterograde and retrograde sequelae of TAI are poorly understood because the diffuse nature of TAI complicates data analysis. To overcome this limitation, we subjected transgenic mice expressing yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) within the visual system to central fluid percussion injury, and consistently generated diffuse TAI within the optic nerve that could easily be followed in the organized YFP positive fibers. We demonstrated progressive axonal swelling, …

Fluoroquinolone And Macrolide Co-Resistance In Clinical Isolates Of Campylobacter Species: A 15-Year Study In Karachi, Pakistan, Seema Irfan, A Ahmad, D Guhar, E Khan, Fasial Malik, Syed Mahmood, Afia Zafar Dec 2012

Fluoroquinolone And Macrolide Co-Resistance In Clinical Isolates Of Campylobacter Species: A 15-Year Study In Karachi, Pakistan, Seema Irfan, A Ahmad, D Guhar, E Khan, Fasial Malik, Syed Mahmood, Afia Zafar

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Fluoroquinolone and macrolide antibiotics are generally considered as first-line drugs for the treatment of severe campylobacteriosis. This study was conducted to analyse the trend of erythromycin and ofloxacin resistance among Campylobacter spp. isolated from stool specimens over a period of 15 years (1992-2007) at The Aga Khan University clinical laboratory in Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 83 396 stool specimens were processed, with a 14% isolation rate for enteric pathogens. The isolation rate of Campylobacter spp. was low during 1992-93 (6%-13%), peaked in 1996 (46%), then ranged from 20% to 40%. We report a rising trend in ofloxacin resistance, re-emergence …

E-Learning Modules

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are increasingly prevalent in US hospitals. The pediatric hospitalist is often the primary provider of inpatient care for these patients. However, exposure to this patient population during training varies from provider to provider. No published educational curricula are specific to the inpatient care of this population. The purpose of this project is to build a multi-modal educational curriculum for providers with the overall goal of improving inpatient care for this at-risk population.

This curriculum is primarily composed of a series of topic-specific learning modules. Asynchronous learning modules, utilized appropriately, can augment learning by …

Biological Motion And Gender Recognition: Visual Fixation On The Inversion Effect, Andrey P. Borisyuk, Rachel J. Garland, Alysse M. Feldman, Abigail R. Marchese Dec 2012

Biological Motion And Gender Recognition: Visual Fixation On The Inversion Effect, Andrey P. Borisyuk, Rachel J. Garland, Alysse M. Feldman, Abigail R. Marchese

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Gender recognition of point-light animations replicated an inversion effect. Participants identified the gender of thirty-two (half upright and half inverted, half male and half female) moving point-light human figures. Male figures were more accurately recognized in upright animations whereas female figures were more accurately recognized in inverted animations. Eye gaze of both genders was identical in both the upright animations (predominantly waist and shoulders) and inverted animations (predominantly waist but more distributed across body parts).

Temporal Subjectivities: Time And Difference In Hegel's Thought, Kristin Sue Gissberg Dec 2012

Temporal Subjectivities: Time And Difference In Hegel's Thought, Kristin Sue Gissberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The primary purpose of the dissertation is to fill what I saw to be a gap in Hegelian scholarship, and in particular, in feminist critiques of Hegel. What I have found to be lacking in much of the literature on Hegel, and those that centerpiece his understanding of subjective differences, is that by isolating parts of his thought, they do not follow his work through to its conclusion, and in doing such, they critique him for a position he does not commit to. In reply, the dissertation assumes a double gesture: I take up the feminist concern with difference generally …

The Cocheros Of American-Occupied Manila Representations And Persistence, Michael D. Pante Dec 2012

The Cocheros Of American-Occupied Manila Representations And Persistence, Michael D. Pante

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle discusses colonial misrepresentations of a marginalized occupational group in the American Philippines. Colonial authorities had pinned their hopes on the transformative power of motorized transportation, which they introduced in Manila. They regarded cocheros or carriage drivers as relics of a backward past that the progress of modernity would render extinct. However, the cocheros were not easily eradicated, and frustrated colonial authorities tagged them as barriers to modernity. Thisarticle analyzes this colonial discourse and offers a nuanced characterization of a voiceless yet ubiquitous group. Keywords: Urban transportation • working classes • American colonialism • modernity • imperialism

Figures Of Migration Gender, Kinship, And The Politics Of Representation, Resto S. Cruz I Dec 2012

Figures Of Migration Gender, Kinship, And The Politics Of Representation, Resto S. Cruz I

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines differences in the discursive representations of male and female overseas Filipino workers. Men have less discursive visibility than females, but men are seen as responsible breadwinners, virile, and/or threatening socioeconomic and international hierarchies, while women are contradictorily portrayed as heroines and bad mothers. These representations result from migration’s tensions and contradictions with historically established gender and kinship norms. Because these norms are central to Philippine class and status hierarchies, elite and middle-class anxieties thus mediate migrants’ representations. Further, the state and global political economy shape these representations. This examination compels a rethinking of Philippine migration flows as feminized. Keywords: …

There Is A Beginning, Catherine Stark Dec 2012

There Is A Beginning, Catherine Stark

Theses and Dissertations

Science and nature inspire me to create. I have always found a unique beauty in abstracted views of organic matter. I have built a visual vocabulary for my imagery through examinations of scientific images from topography and biology. In addition, my responses to the natural environment inform my abstract, expressionistic, mixed media paintings. Using oil paint in a nontraditional way, I rub, brush, and manipulate paper surfaces to create subtle texture and color. Then, I add a vast range of materials such as resin, varnish, and enamel to build depth and layers. My works suggest actual surfaces in nature and …

The Relation Of Igf-1 And Insulin Resistance In A Sample Of Iraqi Obese Type 2 Diabetic Patients With Macrovascular Disease, Bushra.F Hasan, Isam.N. Salman, Nisreen.A Hamzah

Baghdad Science Journal

Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) is a metabolic disease that is associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis by 2-4 folds than in non- diabetics. In general population, low IGF-1 has been associated with higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease and mortality .This study aims to find out the relationship between IGF-1 level and other biochemical markers such as Homeostasis Model Assessment insulin resistance(HOMAIR) and Body Mass Index(BMI) in type 2 diabetic patients . This study includes (82) patients (40 females and 42 males) with age range (40-75) years,(34) non obese diabetic patients and (48) obese diabetic patients. The non obese individuals …
