Ctod: Collaborative Tree-Based Outlier Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dylan Mcdonald, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Fikret Ercal, Ryan Birmingham, Thomas Lake

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Outlier detection is a well-studied problem in various fields. the unique challenges of wireless sensor networks such as limited bandwidth, memory, energy, and unreliable communication make this problem especially difficult. Sensors can detect outliers for a plethora of reasons and these reasons need to be inferred in real time. Here, we present a new robust communication framework for the unsupervised in network detection of outliers in a wireless sensor network. First, communication is minimized through an ad-hoc collaborative communication scheme which controls sensor behavior to increase overall visibility of individual streaming data sets. Second, an outlier detection algorithm is tailored …

Conventional wisdom is that the American public does not want to think too long or too hard about Medicaid. Medicaid’s reputation has long been big, complicated, and widely misunderstood. The 2012 presidential election campaign has been much about Medicaid, but Medicaid is a subject we love to talk around. Yet, our next president will be compelled to think and speak explicitly and fluently about Medicaid because Medicaid is the budget-buster of government funded health insurance. Its budget busting propensities are most pronounced at the intersection of Medicaid and the government-funded health insurance program we do love to discuss: Medicare.

Nebraska Livestock Development Policy: The Road Not Taken, J. David Aiken Dec 2012

Nebraska Livestock Development Policy: The Road Not Taken, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

For over a decade, Nebraska has been engaged in a civil war between proponents of additional livestock production and opponents who see large livestock facilities as threats to smaller producers, communities and the environment. Major issues have included corporate farming requirements, county livestock zoning, municipal livestock regulation, water quality contamination and livestock odors. County livestock zoning regulations remain a significant battleground. Livestock proponents would like to implement a system like Iowa’s, where counties cannot zone livestock facilities and state environmental regulations establish only minimal animal feeding operation (AFO) setback requirements (3,000 foot maximum or 0.5682 mile).

Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer Dec 2012

Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose for this paper: How can I engage students in thinking about climate change as a planning issue without glossing over or disregarding their growing skepticism about their own futures? This paper is not so much about how I teach, or how I could teach. Rather, it is more conceptual with respect to planning itself. More to the point: how does planning fit into this emerging, and dark, worldview? Planning, after all, is a discipline steeped in hope, and climate change seems to be bringing forth, at least for some, a palpable wave of despair. This is a direct …

The Role Of Megalin In The Transport Of Aminoglycosides Across Human Placenta, Amal Akour Dec 2012

The Role Of Megalin In The Transport Of Aminoglycosides Across Human Placenta, Amal Akour

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Intra-amniotic infections (IAIs) are common complications of labor and delivery. If inadequately treated, these infections can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in the mother and the fetus. Intrapartum aminoglycoside (AG) administration is recommended for the management of IAIs. AGs are known to cross the placenta and achieve bactericidal concentrations in fetal serum. However, the highest and most persistent fetal levels are achieved in renal tissue. So, the fetus may be vulnerable to the nephrotoxic effects of AGs. Megalin, a 600 kDaendocytic receptor, is responsible for the uptake of AGs into renal proximal tubular epithelial cells. This receptor is …

Part of every UNLV engineering student's academic experience, the Senior Design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. Working in teams, the senior design project encourages students to use everything learned in the engineering and computer design programs to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

Beyond the classroom ...

Because of the requirement to work in teams, students also build good communication skills, presentation skills and even business writing skills. They also have to …

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells In Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Inhibit T- And B-Cell Responses In Vitro That Are Used To Define The Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, W. James Cook, William R. Green Dec 2012

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells In Murine Retrovirus-Induced Aids Inhibit T- And B-Cell Responses In Vitro That Are Used To Define The Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, W. James Cook, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have been characterized in several disease settings, especially in many tumor systems. Compared to their involvement in tumor microenvironments, however, MDSCs have been less well studied in their responses to infectious disease processes, in particular to retroviruses that induce immunodeficiency. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the development of a highly immunosuppressive MDSC population that is dependent on infection by the LP-BM5 retrovirus, which causes murine acquired immunodeficiency. These MDSCs express a cell surface marker signature (CD11b Gr-1 Ly6C ) characteristic of monocyte-type MDSCs. Such MDSCs profoundly inhibit immune responsiveness by a cell dose- and …

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek Dec 2012

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek

Honors Theses

In the next few years, many teachers will be challenged in new ways. Student engagement will be at a premium and state standards will be more specific, shifting their focus towards college readiness, integration of curriculum, and developing sound reasoning and critical thinking skills. While the education field is accustomed to adapting and adjusting “on the go”, it may be ill-prepared for this fresh round of changes. Teachers and curriculum directors need resources to help them adapt the classrooms to reflect the more comprehensive design implied by the new standards (Next Generation Science Standards, 2012). This paper promotes a spiral …

Succeeding Through Collaborative Conflict: The Paradoxical Lessons Of Shared Leadership, Rebecca Paulson, Habibullah Wajdi, Charles C. Manz

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Facing serious challenges that may dictate the complete overhaul of business mindset and industry must be directed by sound leadership. But is it possible to lead alone or is collaboration necessary to confront these challenges? These authors tackle the well-known idiom “two heads are better than one” and extract from its meaning the inherent dichotomy in shared leadership, mediating differences of direction, and preserving the integrity of individual perspective in this new age.

Plant Tour And Meeting With Members Of Interface’S Sustainability Team: December 16, 2009 Dec 2012

Plant Tour And Meeting With Members Of Interface’S Sustainability Team: December 16, 2009

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Simply stated, business does not work without the infusion of ethics. While “ethics” can be interpreted in a relative manner, there is no dispute within the scientific community as to the deleterious effects of unrestricted manufacturing processes and the role of environmental factors in generating health crises. The “cradle to grave” designation ― once descriptive of wasteful industrial practices ― is capable of evolving into a “cradle to cradle” approach, triggering a newfound common sense thinking demonstrated by both producers and consumers alike. The Interface experience is demonstrating this evolutionary process.

Harry Potter, Scientology, And The Mysterious Realm Of Copyright Infringement: Analyzing When Close Is Too Close And When The Use Is Fair, Rosalinde Casalini

Touro Law Review

After going to a theatre and watching a new movie, would it be possible to go home and write a book about it? What about after reading a novel? Would a reader be free to write a new book using the same characters? Would a teacher be able to write her own training manual using the exact techniques she had just learned in another author's book? Is there any recourse for authors facing these types of situations? This Comment explores how two lower courts have recently addressed these questions. The first decision, Warner Bros.Entertainment Inc. v. RDR Books, determined whether …

Play Your Part: Girl Talk's Indefinite Role In The Digital Sampling Saga, Shervin Rezaie

Touro Law Review

In 2006, Greg Gillis was a twenty-four year old leading a double-life. During the day he was a biomedical engineer, but by night he was slowly becoming an infamous mash-up artist. His albums mixed "Top 40" radio hits into a unique postmodern audio pastiche. Under the moniker Girl Talk, Greg made his entrance into the limelight with the release of Night Ripper, his third album. Night Ripper began gaining attention as audiences became intrigued and excited by Greg's ability to blend numerous artists, old and new, into one seamless track. To illustrate, the first track on Night Ripper, "Once Again," …

How Improvements In Technology Have Affected The Entertainment Industry: Writers And Actors Fight For Compensation, Bernadette A. Safrath Dec 2012

How Improvements In Technology Have Affected The Entertainment Industry: Writers And Actors Fight For Compensation, Bernadette A. Safrath

Touro Law Review

The rise in the use of technology, and the creation of new media, has left the entertainment industry at a loss as to how to compensate the creative minds that are starting to work in new media. The rise in new media, a predominant factor in the 2007-2008 writers strike and this year’s almost-strikes of the two actors’ guilds, has forced the entertainment industry to adapt to the changes in technology, and create compensation plans for those that work in new media.

Regulators And Effectors Of Acetyltransferase P300 During Oxidative Stress, Heart Disease And Aging, Sumit Jain Dec 2012

Regulators And Effectors Of Acetyltransferase P300 During Oxidative Stress, Heart Disease And Aging, Sumit Jain

Open Access Dissertations

The nuclear acetyltransferase p300 is a chromatin-modifying enzyme that facilitates gene transcription by modifying histone-DNA interactions and promoting the transcriptional activation properties of numerous transcription factors. p300 and its paralogue, CBP (CREB-binding protein) are implicated in a wide range of essential biological processes, however, the extent to which p300 has independent tissue- or signal-specific functions has been a matter of dispute. Here, I used gene targeting, gain-of-function and knockdown models to show that the myocardial response to oxidative stress is obligatorily dependent on the cellular availability of p300, and that this availability is dynamically modulated as part of an acute …

Annual Glyphosate Treatments Alter Growth Of Unaffected Bentgrass ( Agrostis ) Weeds And Plant Community Composition, Collin W. Ahrens, Carol A. Auer

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

Herbicide resistance is becoming more common in weed ecotypes and crop species including turfgrasses, but current gaps in knowledge limit predictive ecological risk assessments and risk management plans. This project examined the effect of annual glyphosate applications on the vegetative growth and reproductive potential of two weedy bentgrasses, creeping bentgrass (CB) and redtop (RT), where the glyphosate resistance (GR) trait was mimicked by covering the bentgrass plants during glyphosate application. Five field plots were studied in habitats commonly inhabited by weedy bentgrasses including an agricultural hayfield, natural meadow, and wasteland. Results showed that annual glyphosate treatment improved bentgrass survivorship, vegetative …

Multiplex Networks And Interest Group Influence Reputation: An Exponential Random Graph Model, Michael T. Heaney Dec 2012

Multiplex Networks And Interest Group Influence Reputation: An Exponential Random Graph Model, Michael T. Heaney

Working Papers

Interest groups struggle to build reputations as influential actors in the policy process and to discern the influence exercised by others. This study conceptualizes influence reputation as a relational variable that varies locally throughout a network. Drawing upon interviews with 168 interest group representatives in the United States health policy domain, this research examines the effects of multiplex networks of communication, coalitions, and issues on influence reputation. Using an exponential random graph model (ERGM), the analysis demonstrates that multiple roles of confidant, collaborator, and issue advocate affect how group representatives understand the influence of those with whom they are tied, …
