Bovine Nutritional Needs: Digestibility Of Dry And Ensiled Forages When Feeding Young Dairy Heifers, Shirley Nigaglioni Jul 2012

Bovine Nutritional Needs: Digestibility Of Dry And Ensiled Forages When Feeding Young Dairy Heifers, Shirley Nigaglioni

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The diets fed to growing animals are very important to ensure that young animals have the proper nutrients available for growth. When feeding dairy heifers, a farmer’s goal is to feed a very digestible diet that will provide nutrients to keep dairy heifers healthy and allow them to grow faster, while spending less money on feed. The objective of this study was to determine whether feeding heifers diets containing dry or ensiled forage (haylage) improved digestibility. Our hypothesis was that incorporating hay into the diet of 16-week-old dairy heifers would provide a more digestible source of nutrients. For this study, …

Ostracism Is Lost In Translation: When Being Ignored And Excluded Does Not Matter, Han Kang Jul 2012

Ostracism Is Lost In Translation: When Being Ignored And Excluded Does Not Matter, Han Kang

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

How do you feel when people around you start conversing in a language you do not understand? In addition to feeling ostracized, you may also wonder if they are talking about you. Participants were either talked to or not talked to in three different language conditions: English, English-Chinese, and Chinese. Participants experienced more distress when being ostracized than included by English, but they found inclusion more distressing than ostracism by English-Chinese. Additionally, more paranoid attributions were made by participants who were included, rather than ostracized by those speaking an unfamiliar language. This study is the first to show that, under …

Controls And Improvements Of Molecular Assays For Microbiological Water Testing, David R. Wanless Jul 2012

Controls And Improvements Of Molecular Assays For Microbiological Water Testing, David R. Wanless

Open Access Theses

The monitoring of recreational waters is important to gauge risks to human health. The methods currently used are time-intensive (18-24 hours to test results) and because of this, results may be inaccurate. There are now molecular techniques capable of delivering faster results on multiple microbiological targets, including source tracking markers. However, these techniques cannot be utilized most effectively until extraction efficiencies of environmental DNA are known. Earlier studies of bacterial indicators in recreational beach waters using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed variation in the DNA extraction efficiency of filtered marine water samples. Silica-based binding matrix micro-columns used in DNA …

Diffusion Barriers Of The Lateral Ventricular System, Anitha Saravanakumar Jul 2012

Diffusion Barriers Of The Lateral Ventricular System, Anitha Saravanakumar

Master's Theses

Adult neurogenesis in mammalian brain has become a well-accepted phenomenon. The neural stem cells in the sub ventricular zone (SVZ) along the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle, the largest germinal center of adult neurogenesis, are maintained by the neural stem cell niche. One prominent feature of the niche is its close proximity to the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). The role of micromolecules (such as ions, water and gases) present in the CSF and diffusing through the lateral ventricular wall and how the stem cell micro-environment is maintained is poorly understood. The cytoarchitecture of the lateral ventricular wall with a …

Neonatal Isoflurane Exposure On Apoptotic Neurodegeneration And Long-Term Behavioral Functions, Susan E. Maloney Jul 2012

Neonatal Isoflurane Exposure On Apoptotic Neurodegeneration And Long-Term Behavioral Functions, Susan E. Maloney

Dissertations

Clinical studies have reported multiple exposures to anesthesia are associated with an increased risk of later learning disabilities. The general anesthetic Isoflurane (ISO) is commonly used in pediatric anesthesia and decreases the activity of the central nervous system through activation of the GABAA receptor. Other drug classes, such as anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, and alcohol, that share this mechanism increase neuroapoptosis during the developmental brain growth spurt period. Exposure to these agents during this time also can have detrimental consequences on behavior. Two experiments were conducted to examine the acute neuroapoptotic response and long-term behavioral impact of postnatal ISO exposure using an …

Relationship Between Exercise And The Expression Of Adhd Symptoms In College Students, Jessica Mcdaniel

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between cardio-respiratory exercise levels and the expression of symptoms commonly associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a college population. Previous research suggests physical exercise may reduce common behavioral symptoms of ADHD. Symptoms commonly associated with ADHD include an inability to focus and feelings of restlessness, which may be harmful to a college student's academic success. The present study surveyed the exercise level, symptom expression, and diagnostic history of undergraduate students (N=315) at Rowan University. Exercise frequency and duration were calculated based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services …

Development Of One-Step Taqman® Real-Time Reverse Transcription-Pcr And Conventional Reverse Transcription-Pcr Assays For The Detection Of Equine Rhinitis A And B Viruses, Zhengchun Lu, Peter J. Timoney, Jena White, Udeni B R Balasuriya Jul 2012

Development Of One-Step Taqman® Real-Time Reverse Transcription-Pcr And Conventional Reverse Transcription-Pcr Assays For The Detection Of Equine Rhinitis A And B Viruses, Zhengchun Lu, Peter J. Timoney, Jena White, Udeni B R Balasuriya

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Equine rhinitis viruses A and B (ERAV and ERBV) are common equine respiratory viruses belonging to the family Picornaviridae. Sero-surveillance studies have shown that these two viral infections are prevalent in many countries. Currently, the diagnosis of ERAV and ERBV infections in horses is mainly based on virus isolation (VI). However, the sensitivity of VI testing varies between laboratories due to inefficient viral growth in cell culture and lack of cytopathic effect. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop molecular diagnostic assays (real-time RT-PCR [rRT-PCR] and conventional RT-PCR [cRT-PCR] assays) to detect and distinguish ERAV from ERBV …

Politicizing Patents - Patenting Biotechnology In The Wake Of Section 33, Prometheus, And Cls Bank, Jonathan R. K. Stroud

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Tucked into the America Invents Act is the first statutory exemption for any patentable subject matter. Section 33 renders unpatentable all claims “encompassing a human being.” By recognizing a vague subject matter – exception for human beings despite the fact that internal policies had long militated against such patent claims, Congress has politicized the patent law to an unheard-of degree. While textually consistent with internal USPTO policy, the passage of § 33 should not be seen as an invitation to litigators to expand § 101 unpatentable-subject-matter challenges to validity by including arguments that medical methods, genetic tests, biological chimeras, or …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines in the CNS has been implicated as a key contributor to pathophysiology progression in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and extensive studies with animal models have shown that selective suppression of excessive glial proinflammatory cytokines can improve neurologic outcomes. The prior art, therefore, raises the logical postulation that intervention with drugs targeting dysregulated glial proinflammatory cytokine production might be effective disease-modifying therapeutics if used in the appropriate biological time window. To test the hypothesis that early stage intervention with such drugs might be therapeutically beneficial, we examined the impact of intervention with MW01-2-151SRM (MW-151), an experimental therapeutic that …

Sex-Specific Habitat Use And Responses To Fragmentation In An Endemic Chameleon Fauna, Philip Shirk Jul 2012

Sex-Specific Habitat Use And Responses To Fragmentation In An Endemic Chameleon Fauna, Philip Shirk

Theses and Dissertations

Chameleons are an understudied taxon facing many threats, including collection for the international pet trade and habitat loss and fragmentation. A recent field study reports a highly female-biased sex ratio in the Eastern Arc Endemic Usambara three horned chameleon, Trioceros deremensis, a large, sexually dimorphic species. This species is collected for the pet trade, and local collectors report males bring a higher price because only this sex has horns. Thus, sex ratios may vary due to differential rates of survival or harvesting. Alternatively, they may simply appear to be skewed if differences in habitat use biases detection of the sexes. …

Constitutive Modelling Of Mullin's Effect In Swollen Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Under Cyclic Loading / Irmalisa Samsuri, Samsuri Irmalisa Jul 2012

Constitutive Modelling Of Mullin's Effect In Swollen Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Under Cyclic Loading / Irmalisa Samsuri, Samsuri Irmalisa

Student Works (2010-2019)

Under cyclic loading, hyperelastic materials exhibit a particular stress softening behaviour called Mullin’s effect. Few efforts have been done to propose a mathematical model to represent this behaviour in rubber material. However, all attempts are only focusing on dry rubber. The study of Mullin’s effect in swollen rubber is quite important since a lot of parts or components made from rubber are exposed to aggressive solvent such as biodiesel. With the application of cyclic loading, the degradation of material becomes more rapid and leading to fatigue. In this study, the constitutive modelling of Mullin’s effect in swollen Nitrile Butadiene Rubber …

Annotation Of Cytochrome P450 Genes In "Harmonia Axyridis' And A Comparative Study Of Cyp Genes In "Harmonia Axyridis' And "Tribolium Castaneum', Supriya Priyadarshini Pati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Our knowledge of beetle cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes was primarily obtained from studies of the model beetle and grain pest Tribolium castaneum. To gain additional insight into beetle CYPs and ultimately to inform our understanding of beetle CYP evolution, we identified and annotated all of the CYP genes present in a new draft genome of Harmonia axyridis by using traditional and automated methods for gene annotation. Overall, we identified somewhat fewer CYPs in H. axyridis (at least 94 genes and 3 pseudo genes representing 17 families and 42 subfamilies) compared to the number of of known CYPs in T. castaneum (137 …

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Induces Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Ansel Philip Amaral Jul 2012

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Induces Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Ansel Philip Amaral

Open Access Dissertations

Over one in ten adults manifests physiological evidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which significantly reduces life expectancy due to cardiovascular complications. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is at the center of this relationship and up to 90% of patients with CKD also manifest LVH. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 is a phosphorus-regulating hormone responsible for maintaining normal serum phosphate levels in early stages of CKD; furthermore, FGF23 levels rise during the course of the disease and correlate with the CKD stage. High plasma FGF23 levels are independently associated with elevated left ventricular mass, LVH and increased risk of mortality. These …

A resistor, fabricating method, and thermal sensor material for resistors that incorporate high Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) values and low resistivity for better sensitivity in infrared imaging applications are disclosed. Amorphous oxide thin films, preferably oxides of vanadium (VOx), were deposited on thermally grown silicon dioxide by direct current (DC) magnetron co-sputtering of noble metals (gold and platinum) in a controlled argon/oxygen atmosphere. The ideal conditions for preparing an amorphous vanadium oxide/noble metal thin film are identified. TCR and resistivity results showed that the additions of gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) into VOx reduced the resistivity. However, only gold …

Life History Switch Point Plasticy In Response To Pond Drying Alyers Metamorph Allometry And Jumping Performance, Julie Charbonnier Jul 2012

Life History Switch Point Plasticy In Response To Pond Drying Alyers Metamorph Allometry And Jumping Performance, Julie Charbonnier

Theses and Dissertations

Animals with complex life cycles can cope with environmental uncertainty by altering life history switch points through developmental plasticity. Pond drying is an important factor which may alter life history switch points in aquatic organisms. Many amphibians can plastically respond to changes in pond drying by emerging earlier, but few studies have examined the post-metamorphic consequences for performance. To investigate the potential carry-over effects of plasticity to pond drying, we studied the túngara frog, Physalaemus pustulosus, a tropical anuran that breeds in highly ephemeral habitats. We conducted a field study with three different water depth treatments in 60 L mesocosms …

User Assisted Tree Reconstruction From Point Clouds, William P. Leavenworth Ii

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

LIDAR is a useful tool for quickly digitalizing real world objects, but it usually takes some effort to produce a recognizable object from the raw input. When the object is a tree, the challenge is to create a three‐dimensional model that represents its general shape, while avoiding the influence of undersampling and noise. In the method developed for this research, the user creates a sketch overlaying a display of the raw input data. Each node in the sketch creates an estimated slice of the tree skeleton at that point, and the slices are connected according to the connectivity of the …

Secreted Semaphorin 5a Suppressed Pancreatic Tumour Burden But Increased Metastasis And Endothelial Cell Proliferation., A Sadanandam, S S. Sidhu, S Wullschleger, S Singh, M L. Varney, C-S Yang, A E. Ashour, Surinder K. Batra, Rakesh Singh

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

BACKGROUND: Our earlier reports demonstrated that membrane-bound semaphorin 5A (SEMA5A) is expressed in aggressive pancreatic cancer cells and tumours, and promotes tumour growth and metastasis. In this study, we examine whether (1) pancreatic cancer cells secrete SEMA5A and (2) that secreted SEMA5A modulates certain phenotypes associated with tumour progression, angiogenesis and metastasis through various other molecular factors and signalling proteins.

METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we show that human pancreatic cancer cell lines secrete the extracellular domain (ECD) of SEMA5A (SEMA5A-ECD) and overexpression of mouse Sema5A-ECD in Panc1 cells (not expressing SEMA5A; Panc1-Sema5A-ECD; control cells - Panc1-control) significantly increases …
