Seasonality & The Local Food System: The Role Of Seasons In Local Food Education In New York City, Sarah Benoit Aug 2012

Seasonality & The Local Food System: The Role Of Seasons In Local Food Education In New York City, Sarah Benoit

Urban Studies Masters Theses

Much of the current research on global and local food insecurity – particularly among poor urban populations – strongly suggests that the impacts of industrial agriculture and the American fast food culture has been detrimental to both urban and rural populations, and to small farmers. Food insecurity and unequal access to healthy and affordable food are critical issues in the metropolis. In response to these concerns, there has been a great deal of mobilization around the concept of local and regional food systems. Food systems analysis examines the viability, equitability, and sustainability of the life cycle of the local food …

Transformation Of Data Into Knowledge Within Higher Education, Mary E. Osborne Aug 2012

Transformation Of Data Into Knowledge Within Higher Education, Mary E. Osborne

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Establishing institutional effectiveness has beleaguered U.S. higher education institutions for thirty years. One key element of institutional effectiveness is the ability of an organization to use data for effective decision-making. This study provides new insight into this critical component of institutional effectiveness by examining the transformation of data through several stages until it embeds into the institutional culture. A model of the environmental and institutional elements that result in transformation is proposed and tested. Data were gathered through a survey instrument administered to Institutional Research professionals at comprehensive regional universities and community colleges in the United States. The survey amassed …

Sarcopenia, Obesity, And Natural Killer Cell Immune Senescence In Aging: Altered Cytokine Levels As A Common Mechanism, Charles T. Lutz, Lebris S. Quinn Aug 2012

Sarcopenia, Obesity, And Natural Killer Cell Immune Senescence In Aging: Altered Cytokine Levels As A Common Mechanism, Charles T. Lutz, Lebris S. Quinn

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Human aging is characterized by both physical and physiological frailty. A key feature of frailty, sarcopenia is the age-associated decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and endurance that characterize even the healthy elderly. Increases in adiposity, particularly in visceral adipose tissue, are almost universal in aging individuals and can contribute to sarcopenia and insulin resistance by increasing levels of inflammatory cytokines known collectively as adipokines. Aging also is associated with declines in adaptive and innate immunity, known as immune senescence, which are risk factors for cancer and all-cause mortality. The cytokine interleukin-15 (IL-15) is highly expressed in skeletal muscle tissue …

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a biochemically targeted radiotherapy based on the nuclear capture and fission reactions that occur when non-radioactive boron-10, which is a constituent of natural elemental boron, is irradiated with low energy thermal neutrons to yield high linear energy transfer alpha particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. Clinical interest in BNCT has focused primarily on the treatment of high grade gliomas, recurrent cancers of the head and neck region and either primary or metastatic melanoma. Neutron sources for BNCT currently have been limited to specially modified nuclear reactors, which are or until the recent Japanese natural disaster, …

Martharaptor Greenriverensis, A New Theropod Dinosaur From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, Phil Senter, James I. Kirkland, Donald D. Deblieux

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Background: The Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Early Cretaceous, Barremian?) of Utah has yielded a rich dinosaur fauna, including the basal therizinosauroid theropod Falcarius utahensis at its base. Recent excavation uncovered a new possible therizinosauroid taxon from a higher stratigraphic level in the Cedar Mountain Formation than F. utahensis. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we describe a fragmentary skeleton of the new theropod and perform a phylogenetic analysis to determine its phylogenetic position. The skeleton includes fragments of vertebrae, a scapula, forelimb and hindlimb bones, and an ischium. It also includes several well-preserved manual unguals. Manual and pedal morphology …

Silencing Through Heterochromatin Formation: The Role Of Piwi In Transposon Targeting, Hsiming Wang Aug 2012

Silencing Through Heterochromatin Formation: The Role Of Piwi In Transposon Targeting, Hsiming Wang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Heterochromatin packages a large portion of the genome in eukaryotes, and plays important roles in mitosis, telomere homeostasis, and transposon: TE) control, all necessary to ensure genome stability. A precisely controlled mechanism to designate which regions of the genome should be so packaged is critical to the fitness of an organism. Mis-localized heterochromatin can lead to mis-regulation of nearby and even distant genes, with pleotropic consequences. How cells: and hence organisms) precisely control the location and extent of heterochromatin formation is an intriguing question. Models involving small RNAs, epigenetic inheritance of histone modifications, DNA binding proteins targeting specific motifs, and …

Targets Of Heterochromatin Assembly In Drosophila Melanogaster, Monica F. Sentmanat Aug 2012

Targets Of Heterochromatin Assembly In Drosophila Melanogaster, Monica F. Sentmanat

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Heterochromatin is classically defined as densely staining regions of the genome; these domains are typically late replicating and show little recombination. Correct assembly of heterochromatin is critical for chromosome stability. Assembly begins with histone deacetylation and H3 lysine 9 di- and trimethylation: H3K9me2/3); the methylated H3 is typically bound by Heterochromatin Protein 1a: HP1a). Heterochromatin predominates at pericentric and telomeric domains --regions abundant in transposable elements: TEs) and satellite repeats. Transcription of these TEs has been found to generate a platform for assembly of heterochromatin through RNAi in S. pombe and A. thaliana, and may play a critical role in …

Coming To Terms With Dred Scott: A Response To Daniel A. Farber, Paul Finkelman Aug 2012

Coming To Terms With Dred Scott: A Response To Daniel A. Farber, Paul Finkelman

Pepperdine Law Review

When thinking about Dred Scott, the issue is not how do we “rehabilitate” the opinion. The goal of scholarship here is to understand the opinion, place it in the context of its own time, and explain its enduring significance. After that, we may praise or damn it, and rehabilitate it or condemn it. No one today likes the Dred Scott opinion or the result. But, this article argues that Professor Daniel A. Farber is so incensed by the opinion that he vastly overstates its historical significance including incorrectly blaming Chief Justice Taney for causing the Civil War. This article rejects …

Crise Do Natural: Percepções E Representações Da Natureza E Suas Relações Com A Esfera Social Na Novíssima Prosa Latino-Americana, Danielle Murta De Laborde Affonso

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This thesis approaches the fictional works of three contemporary Latin American authors: the Brazilian writers Regina Rheda, Letícia Wierzchowski and the Argentine author Gustavo Nielsen. In selected works by these writers Humana Festa (2008); Os Aparados (2009) and El Corazón de Doli (2010), respectively, I analyze the literary representation of nature in relation to neoliberalism and globalization in Latin America. My study considers the explicit and implicit values attached to the ecological in contemporary society, how the environment is represented in contemporary literature and how it dialogues with current political, social and cultural trends. The thesis explores how the fictional …

Demand For Water Quality: Empirical Evidence From A Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior, And Choice Experiment Survey About The Bagmati River In Kathmandu, Nepal, Hari Katuwal

Economics ETDs

Surface water ecosystems such as rivers and lakes provide many benefits to the society. These benefits include both market goods such as drinking water, outdoor recreation, fisheries, as well as non market goods such as habitats for aquatic life, biodiversity, aesthetic attributes, and religious values. Because people value both market and non market goods, benefits from both types of goods must be taken into account for any policy change. The primary objective of this dissertation is to assess public preferences and estimate the benefits of improving environmental quality, water quality in particular, using survey data from Kathmandu, Nepal. Chapter 2 …

Relationships Between Food Reinforcement And Eating Behaviors To Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss And Substance Abuse Outcomes, Summar Reslan Aug 2012

Relationships Between Food Reinforcement And Eating Behaviors To Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss And Substance Abuse Outcomes, Summar Reslan

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Bariatric surgery is rapidly gaining acceptance among the morbidly obese population, yet studies assessing variables associated with post-surgical outcomes have yielded inconsistent findings. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the association between the relative reinforcing value of food (RRV-F), delay discounting for food (DD-F), and other eating-related and non eating-related variables to post-bariatric surgery percent total weight loss (%TWL) and substance-related outcomes. Participants were a convenience sample of 147 adults with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Using online survey methodology, variables that may contribute to post-surgical %TWL and substance use outcomes were assessed: the RRV-F, DDF, …
