Marine N2 fixing microorganisms, termed diazotrophs, are a key functional group in marine pelagic ecosystems. The biological fixation of dinitrogen (N2) to bioavailable nitrogen provides an important new source of nitrogen for pelagic marine ecosystems and influences primary productivity and organic matter export to the deep ocean. As one of a series of efforts to collect biomass and rates specific to different phytoplankton functional groups, we have constructed a database on diazotrophic organisms in the global pelagic upper ocean by compiling about 12 000 direct field measurements of cyanobacterial diazotroph abundances (based on microscopic cell counts or …

Brain Computer Interfaces: BCI) systems which allow humans to control external devices directly from brain activity, are becoming increasingly popular due to dramatic advances in the ability to both capture and interpret brain signals. Further advancing BCI systems is a compelling goal both because of the neurophysiology insights gained from deriving a control signal from brain activity and because of the potential for direct brain control of external devices in applications such as brain injury recovery, human prosthetics, and robotics. The dynamic and adaptive nature of the brain makes it difficult to create classifiers or control systems that will remain …

Early detection of diseased cells can greatly alter the course of a disease process and create a better outcome for the patient. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a disease characterized by gradual destruction of lung tissue caused by infiltration and proliferation of smooth muscle-like cells. Currently little can be done to treat the disease other than to ease symptoms. Early LAM diagnosis can greatly impact the course of the disease and the patient’s quality of life. In this work a sensitive imaging platform composed of a ligand targeted poly(amido)amine (PAMAM) nanocarrier complexed with Renilla luciferase (RLuc) is developed to target the lung …

Neuronal damage is a hallmark feature of HIV-associated neurological disorders (HANDs). Opiate drug abuse accelerates the incidence and progression of HAND; however, the mechanisms underlying the potentiation of neuropathogenesis by these drugs remain elusive. Opiates such as morphine have been shown to enhance HIV transactivation protein Tat-mediated toxicity in both human neurons and neuroblastoma cells. In the present study, we demonstrate reduced expression of the tropic factor platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B with a concomitant increase in miR-29b in the basal ganglia region of the brains of morphine-dependent simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaques compared with the SIV-infected controls. In vitro relevance …

In the previous study the analgesic effect of Cinnamommum zeylanicum Breyn had been investigating. The aim of this study was to investigate analgesic effect of the 70% ethanol extract of cinnamon bark (Cinnamommum zeylanicum Breyn.). This study used Tail Flick method at 25 male mice which have passed sensitivity test, divided into five groupes. Group I as negative control was administered 0,5% CMC, group Il as positive control was administered tramadol HCI, group Ill, IV and V was administered extract of cinnamon bark at 8; 16 and 32 mg/20 g BW. Drugs were orally administered to mice. The reaction of …

Locomotion in mammals relies on a central pattern-generating circuitry of spinal interneurons established during development that coordinates limb movement. These networks produce left–right alternation of limbs as well as coordinated activation of flexor and extensor muscles. Here we show that a premature stop codon in the DMRT3 gene has a major effect on the pattern of locomotion in horses. The mutation is permissive for the ability to perform alternate gaits and has a favorable effect on harness racing performance. Examination of wild-type and Dmrt3-null mice demonstrates that Dmrt3 is expressed in the dI6 subdivision of spinal cord neurons, takes …

Analysis Of Die5 And Lia5 Reveals The Importance Of Dna Repair In Programmed Dna Rearrangement Of Tetrahymena Thermophila, Wan-Yi: Annie) Shieh
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
During its somatic nuclear differentiation, the single cell eukaryote Tetrahymena thermophila undergoes genome-wide programmed DNA rearrangement to eliminate transposon-like elements from its future soma. This process involves small RNA-directed heterochromatin formation followed by extensive nuclear reorganization to form subnuclear domains. While more has been known about small RNAs and heterochromatin, the mechanisms and players involved in the process of nuclear reorganization and the subsequent removal of transposon-like elements from the somatic genome are just starting to unravel. My thesis work centers on the study of two novel nuclear proteins Die5p: Chapter 2) and Lia5p: Chapter 3) and their roles in …

Placing self-autonomy of human beings as purely rational subjects represents one extreme, while positioning rational human subjects as entirely dependent on psychological and socio-economic relations represents the other extreme. This study aims to explain how the main character, Minke, in narrative discourse addresses these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of textual units analyzed using Bühler’s semiotic model. The results of the study show that there are three ways used by subjects to express themselves: (1) the symptomic way, expressed through validity claims of honesty; (2) the signalic way, shown through regulative speech using normative …

Fantasy, Desire And Identity Framing The Identity Construction Of Luh Sekar, Evi Eliyanah
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This article examines the roles of fantasy and desire in the process of identity construction as experienced by Luh Sekar, one of the characters in Oka Rusmini’s most notable work of fiction, Tarian Bumi. Employing Stuart Hall’s postulate on identity construction in a critical reading of the novel, the study finds that the subject’s identity construction is highly influenced by her fantasy and desire related to caste and gender. Caste not only structures women’s social location through rank and role, but also, as part of the symbolic order, constitutes women themselves.

Simbolisme Dalam Tradisi Lisan Pasang Ri Kajang: Tinjauan Semiotik, Basrah Gising
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Semiotics is a set of analytical approaches that has been applied in linguistics and anthropology. This article focuses on language and cultural symbols expressed in Pasang ri Kajang and analyzes them based on the grand theory of semantics. This research adopts a qualitative research perspective. Data validity was ensured through data collection methods including interviews, recordings, note-taking, elicitation, and focus group discussions. The results indicate that Pasang ri Kajang contains sacred ancestral messages transmitted through oral tradition. These messages embody forms of local wisdom related to sustainable environmental management. The focus of this research is the local knowledge system concerning …

Raman spectroscopy is used to gather information on the mineral and organic components of bone tissue to analyze their composition. By measuring the Raman signal of bone through spatially offset Raman spectroscopy the health of the bone can be determined. We’ve customized a system with 8 collection channels that consist of individual fibers, which are coupled to separate spectrometers and cooled CCDs. This parallel detection system was used to scan gelatin phantoms with Teflon inclusions of two sizes. Raman signals were decoupled from the autofluorescence background using channel specific polynomial fitting. Images with high contrast to background ratios of Raman …
