Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase By 3,39-Diindolylmethane (Dim) Is Associated With Human Prostate Cancer Cell Death In Vitro And In Vivo, Di Chen, Sanjeev Banerjee, Qiuzhi C. Cui, Dejuan Kong, Fazlul H. Sarkar, Q. Ping Dou

Oncology Faculty Publications

There is a large body of scientific evidence suggesting that 3,39-Diindolylmethane (DIM), a compound derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, which is abundant in cruciferous vegetables, harbors anti-tumor activity in vitro and in vivo. Accumulating evidence suggests that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays an essential role in cellular energy homeostasis and tumor development and that targeting AMPK may be a promising therapeutic option for cancer treatment in the clinic. We previously reported that a formulated DIM (BR-DIM; hereafter referred as B-DIM) with higher bioavailability was able to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell growth, angiogenesis, and invasion of prostate cancer cells. …

Neutralizing Antibodies And Pathogenesis Of Hepatitis C Virus Infection, Samira Fafi-Kremer, Catherine Fauvelle, Daniel J. Felmlee, Mirjam B. Zeisel, Quentin Lepiller, Isabel Fofana, Laura Heydmann, Françoise Stoll-Keller, Thomas F. Baumert Oct 2012

Neutralizing Antibodies And Pathogenesis Of Hepatitis C Virus Infection, Samira Fafi-Kremer, Catherine Fauvelle, Daniel J. Felmlee, Mirjam B. Zeisel, Quentin Lepiller, Isabel Fofana, Laura Heydmann, Françoise Stoll-Keller, Thomas F. Baumert

Peninsula Medical School

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The interplay between the virus and host innate and adaptive immune responses determines the outcome of infection. There is increasing evidence that host neutralizing responses play a relevant role in the resulting pathogenesis. Furthermore, viral evasion from host neutralizing antibodies has been revealed to be an important contributor in leading both to viral persistence in acute liver graft infection following liver transplantation, and to chronic viral infection. The development of novel model systems to study HCV entry and neutralization has allowed a detailed understanding of the …

Impact Of Ret Teacher-Developed Curriculum Units On Classroom Experiences For Teachers And Students, Stacy S. Klein-Gardner, Megan E. Johnston, Lisa Benson Oct 2012

Impact Of Ret Teacher-Developed Curriculum Units On Classroom Experiences For Teachers And Students, Stacy S. Klein-Gardner, Megan E. Johnston, Lisa Benson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This phenomenological study examined the impact of Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) teacher-developed curriculum on teaching styles and strategies at two RET sites with common Legacy Cycle training. The study was conducted to assess and document program-specific and National Science Foundation (NSF) goals related to classroom practices and outcomes. We set out to define how the RET program influenced teachers’ teaching style and strategies and how teachers’ new curriculum from the RET program affected students. Twenty-seven science and math teachers participated in interviews at the end of their summer research experience, and twenty of these teachers participated in interviews after …

A Model For Designing M-Agriculture Applications For Dairy Farming, Amos Gichamba, Ismail A. Lukandu Oct 2012

A Model For Designing M-Agriculture Applications For Dairy Farming, Amos Gichamba, Ismail A. Lukandu

The African Journal of Information Systems

In the recent past, developing countries have experienced major technological advancements including high mobile phone penetration. With the implementation of innovative technological solutions (e.g. mobile-based systems in key economic activities such as agriculture), there is need to develop models that software developers and researchers can use to design solutions. This paper aims to study the implementation of mobile systems in agriculture and presents a model for designing such applications. This study shows that models exist for general mobile applications design and development, although none specifically suits mobile agriculture applications. A model for designing and implementing M-Agriculture applications is presented. The …

Examining The Impact Of Pau Jacaré (Piptadenia Gonoacantha) Growth On Soil Fertility In The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, Aleksandra Ponomareva

Environmental Analysis Program Mellon Student Summer Research Reports

The Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil is an area of astounding diversity in both flora and fauna, taking its place among the top five “biodiversity hotspots” in the world. However, in the past 40 or 50 years the area has been increasingly threatened by the presence of humans – approximately 93% of the Rainforest has disappeared as a result of exploitation (Turner 2004). Unsustainable farming practices, as well as logging, cattle ranching and mining activities have caused soil infertility, water depletion, erosion and destruction of ecosystems. This project examines the effects of the Pau Jacaré, Piptadenia gonoacantha, tree on soil health …

Influenza-Infected Neutrophils Within The Infected Lungs Act As Antigen Presenting Cells For Anti-Viral Cd8+ T Cells, Matthew M. Hufford, Graham Richardson, Haixia Zhou, Balaji Manicassamy, Adolfo Garcia-Sastre, Richard I. Enelow, Thomas J. Braciale

Dartmouth Scholarship

Influenza A virus (IAV) is a leading cause of respiratory tract disease worldwide. Anti-viral CD8+ T lymphocytes responding to IAV infection are believed to eliminate virally infected cells by direct cytolysis but may also contribute to pulmonary inflammation and tissue damage via the release of pro-inflammatory mediators following recognition of viral antigen displaying cells. We have previously demonstrated that IAV antigen expressing inflammatory cells of hematopoietic origin within the infected lung interstitium serve as antigen presenting cells (APC) for infiltrating effector CD8+ T lymphocytes; however, the spectrum of inflammatory cell types capable of serving as APC was not …

Enhancement Of Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Case Focusing On A Model Of Successful Conflict Management Skills, Anita Leffel, Cory Hallam, John Darling Oct 2012

Enhancement Of Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Case Focusing On A Model Of Successful Conflict Management Skills, Anita Leffel, Cory Hallam, John Darling

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study focusing on a new technology start-up firm, founded by two graduate students, an engineer and a business major, who met during their university studies. The case is timely, in that only ten percent of new product introductions result in a profitable business. The causes of failure are numerous and include the following: the market may create failure; inadequate funding and capitalization; and competition from established enterprises. Several research studies also point to rising indications of interfunctional conflict in high technology companies. One reason may be that, today, management teams …

Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris Oct 2012

Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris

School of Psychology

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is a fundamental gaze-stabilizing response found in almost all vertebrates, in which eye movements attempt to compensate for the optic flow caused by self-motion. It is an alternating sequence of slow compensatory eye movements made in the direction of stimulus motion and fast eye movements made predominantly in the opposite direction. The timing and amplitude of these slow phases (SPs) and quick phases (QPs) are remarkably variable, and the cause of this variability is poorly understood. In this study principal components analysis was performed on OKN data to illustrate that the variability in correlation matrices across individuals …
