Acute Stress Influences Neural Circuits Of Reward Processing, Anthony J. Porcelli, Andrea H. Lewis, Mauricio R. Delgado Nov 2012

Acute Stress Influences Neural Circuits Of Reward Processing, Anthony J. Porcelli, Andrea H. Lewis, Mauricio R. Delgado

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

People often make decisions under aversive conditions such as acute stress. Yet, less is known about the process in which acute stress can influence decision-making. A growing body of research has established that reward-related information associated with the outcomes of decisions exerts a powerful influence over the choices people make and that an extensive network of brain regions, prominently featuring the striatum, is involved in the processing of this reward-related information. Thus, an important step in research on the nature of acute stress’ influence over decision-making is to examine how it may modulate responses to rewards and punishments within reward …

Evolutionary Star-Structured Heterogeneous Data Co-Clustering, Amit Salunke Nov 2012

Evolutionary Star-Structured Heterogeneous Data Co-Clustering, Amit Salunke

Theses

A star-structured interrelationship, which is a more common type in real world data, has a central object connected to the other types of objects. One of the key challenges in evolutionary clustering is integration of historical data in current data. Traditionally, smoothness in data transition over a period of time is achieved by means of cost functions defined over historical and current data. These functions provide a tunable tolerance for shifts of current data accounting instance to all historical information for corresponding instance. Once historical data is integrated into current data using cost functions, co-clustering is obtained using various co-clustering …

A Framework For Contextual Metadata Used In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects, Joan E. Beaudoin Nov 2012

A Framework For Contextual Metadata Used In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects, Joan E. Beaudoin

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

The quality and the quantity of contextual information found in the descriptive metadata associated with digital representations of cultural objects are frequently inadequate for assuring that users will understand the nature of both the original object that has been digitally preserved, and the digital representation itself. This paper proposes and defines a framework for ensuring that relevant contextual metadata is easily collected and maintained. After identifying and describing eight important dimensions of context, the paper shows how implementing the framework, through a series of questions and prompts, results in a descriptive metadata record that accommodates the important aspects of an …

An Analytical And Experimental Comparison Of Csp Extensions And Tools, Ling Shi, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Gustavo Carvalho Nov 2012

An Analytical And Experimental Comparison Of Csp Extensions And Tools, Ling Shi, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Gustavo Carvalho

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) has been widely applied to modeling and analyzing concurrent systems. There have been considerable efforts on enhancing CSP by taking data and other system aspects into account. For instance, CSP M combines CSP with a functional programming language whereas CSP# integrates high-level CSP-like process operators with low-level procedure code. Little work has been done to systematically compare these CSP extensions, which may have subtle and substantial differences. In this paper, we compare CSP M and CSP# not only on their syntax, but also operational semantics as well as their supporting tools such as FDR, ProB, and …

Divad: A Dynamic And Interactive Visual Analytical Dashboard For Exploring And Analyzing Transport Data, Tin Seong Kam, Ketan Barshikar, Shaun Jun Hua Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The advances in location-based data collection technologies such as GPS, RFID etc. and the rapid reduction of their costs provide us with a huge and continuously increasing amount of data about movement of vehicles, people and goods in an urban area. This explosive growth of geospatially-referenced data has far outpaced the planner’s ability to utilize and transform the data into insightful information thus creating an adverse impact on the return on the investment made to collect and manage this data. Addressing this pressing need, we designed and developed DIVAD, a dynamic and interactive visual analytics dashboard to allow city planners …

Tyrosine Nitration Of Voltage-Dependent Anion Channels In Cardiac Ischemia-Reperfusion: Reduction By Peroxynitrite Scavenging, Meiying Yang, Amadou K.S. Camara, Bassam T. Wakim, Yifan Zhou, Ashish K. Gadicherla, Wai-Meng Kwok, David F. Stowe

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Excess superoxide (O2−) and nitric oxide (NO) forms peroxynitrite (ONOO−) during cardiac ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury, which in turn induces protein tyrosine nitration (tyr-N). Mitochondria are both a source of and target for ONOO−. Our aim was to identify specific mitochondrial proteins that display enhanced tyr-N after cardiac IR injury, and to explore whether inhibiting O2−/ONOO− during IR decreases mitochondrial protein tyr-N and consequently improves cardiac function. We show here that IR increased tyr-N of 35 and 15 kDa mitochondrial proteins using Western blot analysis with 3-nitrotyrosine antibody. Immunoprecipitation …

Docking System Design And Self-Assembly Control Of Distributed Swarm Flying Robots, Hongxing Wei, Ning Li, Yong Tao, Youdong Chen, Jindong Tan

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper presents a novel docking system design and the distributed self-assembly control strategy for a Distributed Swarm Flying Robot (DSFR). The DSFR is a swarm robot comprising many identical robot modules that are able to move on the ground, dock with each other and fly coordinately once self-assembled into a robotic structure. A generalized adjacency matrix method is proposed to describe the configurations of robotic structures. Based on the docking system and the adjacency matrix, experiments are performed to demonstrate and verify the self-assembly control strategy.

Capacity Planning For Elderly Care In Ireland Using Simulation Modeling, Mohamed Ragab, Waleed Abo Hamad, Amr Arisha

Conference papers

Global population aging is creating an immense pressure on healthcare facilities making them unable to cope with the growing demand for elderly healthcare services. Current demand-supply gaps result in prolonged waiting times for patients and substantial cost burdens for healthcare systems due to delayed discharges. This paper describes a project aimed at presenting modeling and simulation to address elderly care pathways within the Irish healthcare sector. The management of frail patients admitted to acute hospitals and the introduction of the new intermediate care beds are alternative interventions that healthcare executives are interested in simulating to examine their impact on the …

Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev Nov 2012

Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev

San Diego International Law Journal

The present Article addressed the legal issues surrounding cyberterrorism. In the first chapter, the author explains why cyberterrorism should be described as “the use of electronic networks taking the form of a cyber-attack to commit a) a substantive act criminalized by the existing legal instruments prohibiting terrorism, or b) an act of terrorism under international customary law.” Further, with a special emphasis on existing anti-terrorism conventions and customary international law, it was demonstrated which actors are likely to engage in acts of cyberterrorism (non-state actors, corporations and individuals), as well as which targets are protected by law and which aims …

Basel Iii And Credit Risk Measurement: Variations Among G20 Countries, Matt Schlickenmaier Nov 2012

Basel Iii And Credit Risk Measurement: Variations Among G20 Countries, Matt Schlickenmaier

San Diego International Law Journal

Most countries require banks to hold extra capital to protect against unforeseen financial calamities; banks with riskier loans must hold more capital than those with safer loans. Basel II, a set of international banking standards, allows banks to measure a loan’s risk in different ways: some banks make their own judgments; others use outside agencies. The recent mortgage crisis prompted banks to reevaluate these methods, in part due to banks having failed to perceive the high level of risk inherent in securitized mortgages. The international community’s response was Basel III, an updated version of its previous standards. This Comment will …

Snap-And-Ask: Answering Multimodal Question By Naming Visual Instance, Wei Zhang, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo Nov 2012

Snap-And-Ask: Answering Multimodal Question By Naming Visual Instance, Wei Zhang, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In real-life, it is easier to provide a visual cue when asking a question about a possibly unfamiliar topic, for example, asking the question, “Where was this crop circle found?”. Providing an image of the instance is far more convenient than texting a verbose description of the visual properties, especially when the name of the query instance is not known. Nevertheless, having to identify the visual instance before processing the question and eventually returning the answer makes multimodal question-answering technically challenging. This paper addresses the problem of visual-totext naming through the paradigm of answering-by-search in a two-stage computational framework, which …

Angiotensin At2r Activation Increases Ace2/Ang1-7/Masr Axis And Prevents Fatty-Diet-Induced Obesity, Sourashish Nag, Quaisar Ali, Yonnie Wu, Tahir Hussain Oct 2012

Angiotensin At2r Activation Increases Ace2/Ang1-7/Masr Axis And Prevents Fatty-Diet-Induced Obesity, Sourashish Nag, Quaisar Ali, Yonnie Wu, Tahir Hussain

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Purpose: Adipose tissue, the obligatory site of fat accumulation causing obesity, expresses local renin angiotensin system (RAS). RAS is commonly known to regulate blood pressure. However recently, we observed that angiotensin type 2 receptor (AT2R) activation prevents high-fat diet (HFD)-induced adiposity and hyperinsulinemia. Although, the mechanism(s) is(are) not known. There is evidence that other RAS components namely, the angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) positively regulates while the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which catalyzes the production of Mas receptor (MasR) peptide agonist Ang (1-7), inversely regulates adiposity and hyperinsulinemia. In light of the RAS inter-regulatory features, we hypothesize that AT2R …

“I Am An American”: Communicating Refugee Identity And Citizenship, Brett J. Craig Oct 2012

“I Am An American”: Communicating Refugee Identity And Citizenship, Brett J. Craig

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This study examines the messages in a citizenship preparation class being utilized by refugees and instructors. Through an ethnographic study of a citizenship class at an urban community center in a Midwestern city, an examination of these messages reveals assimilationist expectations and norms for refugees adjusting to American society. Responses from the refugees reveal how these messages are being either accepted or resisted as they negotiate new identities. A contradiction was found between what the citizenship class teaches and the perceptions of refugees regarding the meanings of American citizenship. In particular, refugees reported to often face a difficult situation in …

The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy Oct 2012

The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This ethnographic study explores everyday cultural performance and embodied audiencing practices at a performance-centered midnight screening of the 2003 cult film The Room.

Prior to attending and co-performing the film’s group audiencing ritual, the author explores fan appropriation of the previously obscure film and fan-generated and circulated performance scripts. Drawing on thick description and bodily knowledge gained from attending and performing The Room’s audiencing ritual, the author explores how the ritual’s scripts are embraced, embellished, and deviated from while critiquing problematic aspects of the ritual.

Within these intersections, the author discusses ways in which cultural performance and embodied …
