How Selective Is Social Learning In Dolphins?, Stan A. Kuczaj Ii, Deirdre Yeater, Lauren Highfill Jan 2012

How Selective Is Social Learning In Dolphins?, Stan A. Kuczaj Ii, Deirdre Yeater, Lauren Highfill

Psychology Faculty Publications

Social learning is an important aspect of dolphin social life and dolphin behavioral development. In addition to vocal social learning, dolphins discover behaviors for foraging, play, and social interactions by observing other members of their social group. But dolphins neither indiscriminately observe nor mindlessly mimic other dolphins. To the contrary, dolphin calves are quite selective in their choices of who to observe and/or imitate. Calves are most likely to learn foraging behaviors from their mothers, but they are more likely to watch and reproduce the play behaviors of other calves than the play behaviors of adult dolphins (including their mothers). …

The Role Of R7 Regulators Of G Protein Signaling In The Retina, Hoon Shim Jan 2012

The Role Of R7 Regulators Of G Protein Signaling In The Retina, Hoon Shim

Theses and Dissertations

The R7 regulators of G protein signaling (R7 RGS), namely RGS6, RGS7, RGS9 and RGS11, are expressed in the retina along with its binding partner Gβ5. The RGS9-1 isoform is expressed only in retinal photoreceptors and rate-limits the recovery of rod phototransduction by acting as a member of the transducin GAP complex (RGS9-1/Gβ5L/R9AP). The Gβ5L isoform is also only expressed in retinal photoreceptors and acts by stabilizing the GAP complex. The Gβ5S isoform differs from Gβ5L by the absence of exon 1 due to alternative splicing and is expressed in many other retinal cells. Gβ5L is barely detectable in RGS9-/- …

Designing Direct And Indirect Factor Xa Inhibitors, Rami Al-Horani Jan 2012

Designing Direct And Indirect Factor Xa Inhibitors, Rami Al-Horani

Theses and Dissertations

Anticoagulants are the basis for treatment and prevention of thrombotic diseases. The currently available medicines are associated with a wide range of adverse reactions that mandates developing new anticoagulants. Several lines of evidence support the superiority of factor Xa (FXa) as a promising target to develop novel anticoagulants. This work focuses on the design of direct and indirect FXa inhibitors using an interdisciplinary approach. As indirect FXa inhibitors, a focused library of tetrasulfated N–arylacyl tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) nonsaccharide allosteric antithrombin activators was designed, synthesized, and biochemically evaluated to establish their structure–activity relationship (SAR). An N–arylacyl THIQ analog having carboxylate at position–3, …

Investigating The Role Of Α6 And Α4 Containing Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Nicotine And Cocaine Conditioned Place Preference Tests In Mice., Sarah Sanjakdar

Theses and Dissertations

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors modulate both cholinergic and non-cholinergic synaptic transmission. Our research concerns α6 and α4 neuronal nicotinic subunits because they often co-assemble with the β2 subunit, which has abundant expression in the CNS and previous work has demonstrated that β2* nAChRs are involved in nicotine and cocaine reward. α6β2* and α4β2* nAChRs are highly expressed in midbrain, which is known to be critical for the incentive salience associated with natural and artificial (drug) reward. Our goal was to assess the role of α6β2* and α4β2* nAChRs in nicotine and cocaine reward using an unbiased conditioned place preference (CPP) …

Legislative Enactment Of Standard Forms, John Gradwohl Jan 2012

Legislative Enactment Of Standard Forms, John Gradwohl

Nebraska Law Review

Consideration of legislative enactment of statutory forms requires a comparative analysis of current policies of consumerism with current policies underlying prohibitions on the unauthorized practice of law. In reality, that comparison is disproportionately in the hands of lawyers rather than neutrals or public consumers. Consumerism of individual lawyers and bar associations may be offset by the business side of lawyering, specious personal opinions about the unauthorized practice of law without reference to the actual rules regulating it, fears of uncontrollable practice of law by nonlawyers—especially nonlawyers armed with electronic legal information, influence of private clients of lawyers and lobbyists with …

Tactics In Philanthropy: The Case Of The Moving Spotlight, Dan M. Martin Jan 2012

Tactics In Philanthropy: The Case Of The Moving Spotlight, Dan M. Martin

The Foundation Review

· In recent years, strategy has been a muchdiscussed topic in philanthropy, while tactics have received little attention.

· The experience of the MacArthur Foundation’s environmental program and its Moving Spotlight approach provide examples of the importance of tactical decisions.

· Tactical decisions such as the timing of grants, foundation staffing levels, and the timing of evaluations all contribute to grantees’ ability to achieve outcomes.

· Structure and flexibility can be complementary approaches to grantmaking if the tactics are well thought out.

Plant Community Restoration On Mima Mounds At Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Wa, Brandy K. Reynecke Jan 2012

Plant Community Restoration On Mima Mounds At Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Wa, Brandy K. Reynecke

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Prevention and management of exotic plant species invasion can diminish their negative ecological and economic impacts and maintain ecological functions provided by native species. This is particularly important in rare landscapes that provide essential habitat. The most successful management plans integrate techniques to reduce invasive species abundance, increase native species abundance and reduce invasibility. Eastern Washington's Channeled Scablands bioregion has highly fragmented remnant patches of grassland underlain by glacial alluvium and basalt bedrock that are dotted with Mima mounds (naturally occurring aggregations of fine particle soil). The mounds provide valuable habitat for native plants and animals and many have been …

Climate Change At The Pleistocene-Holocene Boundary In The Pacific Northwest: A Comparison Of Proxy Datasets And The Archaeologicial Record, Tiffany J. Fulkerson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The relationship between climate change at the Pleistocene-Holocene Boundary (ca. 12,600-10,200 cal B.P.) and cultural responses to attendant shifts in the environment remains a vexing issue for archaeologists. This study compiles and analyzes glacial, palynological, faunal, and stratigraphic/geomorphological proxy datasets for climate change in the Pacific Northwest of North America and compares them to the coeval archaeological record. The primary purpose of this exercise is to consider the potential ways in which climate change at the Pleistocene-Holocene Boundary affected cultural development for Late Paleoindian-Early Archaic peoples in the Pacific Northwest. Results indicate that climatic and environmental change at this interval …

Lepeophtheirus Salmonis, Parasitizing Three Species Of Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus Spp.): Host Variations In Load, Morphology, Fecundity, And Genetics Of The Salmon Louse, Stephen Flanagan Jan 2012

Lepeophtheirus Salmonis, Parasitizing Three Species Of Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus Spp.): Host Variations In Load, Morphology, Fecundity, And Genetics Of The Salmon Louse, Stephen Flanagan

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The purpose of this study is to determine biological parameters of salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) as they parasitize different species of Pacific Ocean salmonids off the north Pacific coast of Washington State. Parasite load counts of L. salmonis were made and individuals were collected from salmonids in their natural environment. Louse morphology and fecundity were examined using microscopy. Parasite loads were equal between different species of salmonids (p = 0.231). Lice that infected chinook salmon (n= 48) were smaller in total body length (p < 0.001), cephalothorax length (p < 0.001), and cephalothorax width (p < 0.001) when compared to lice that infected coho salmon (n = 44) or pink salmon (n=45). Lice that infected coho and pink salmon were not statistically different in body length (p = 0.213), cephalothorax length (p = 0.996), or cephalothorax width (p = 0.149). Also, L. salmonis produced fewer eggs when infecting chinook salmon (n = 24) than when infecting coho salmon (p < 0.001) or pink salmon (p < 0.001). Whereas, lice that infected coho salmon (n = 41) or pink salmon (n = 22) produced similar number of eggs (p = 0.60). These results indicate that there are factors associated with infecting chinook salmon hosts that reduce the size and fecundity of salmon lice"--Document.

Under domestic U.S. sales law, usage of trade is relevant in ascertaining the meaning of an agreement, and it can be used to supplement, qualify, or explain an agreement. However, usage of trade may not be used under domestic U.S. sales law to contradict a written agreement. Moreover, any course of performance or course of dealing between the parties will prevail over inconsistent usage of trade. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, or CISG, similarly provides for consideration of usage to establish the terms of the agreement between the parties, as well as to …

Cyber Commodification, Miriam A. Cherry Jan 2012

Cyber Commodification, Miriam A. Cherry

All Faculty Scholarship

When it comes to commodification on the Internet, it is a wild, wild World Wide Web. Researching encyclopedia articles for Wikipedia is an unpaid labor of love, but connecting to your friends on Facebook is a $100 billion enterprise. Newspaper classified advertisements are definitely commercial, but their equivalent on Craigslist was mostly non-commercial – until the Delaware Chancery Court stepped in. Selling your organs is prohibited in the United States, whereas selling hair promises to rescue third-world citizens from poverty. Selling sex is illegal as prostitution, but selling adultery online is a hot new business model. And a small company …

Shifting Public Health Priorities And The Global Effort To Prevent A Bird Flu Pandemic, Robert Gatter Jan 2012

Shifting Public Health Priorities And The Global Effort To Prevent A Bird Flu Pandemic, Robert Gatter

All Faculty Scholarship

Global strategy to control highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has changed dramatically since 2003 when it was first reported that a confirmed bird flu jumped the species barrier to infect a human in Hong Kong. Evidence of this shift in priorities in the global fight against HPAI can be found most clearly in program funding trends. In late 2008 and into 2009, financial commitments from international donors for all HPAI programs dropped significantly. Meanwhile, within HPAI programs, funding shifted substantially away from animal biosecurity projects and into human response and preparedness work. This Article examines three reasons for this shift …

A Horrible Fascination: Segregation, Obscenity, & The Cultural Contingency Of Rights, Anders Walker Jan 2012

A Horrible Fascination: Segregation, Obscenity, & The Cultural Contingency Of Rights, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

Building on current interest in the regulation of child pornography, this article goes back to the 1950s, recovering a lost history of how southern segregationists used the battle against obscenity to counter the Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. Itself focused on the psychological development of children, Brown sparked a discursive backlash in the South focused on claims that the races possessed different cultures and that white children would be harmed joined a larger, regional campaign, a constitutional guerilla war mounted by moderates and extremists alike that swept onto cultural, First Amendment terrain even as the frontal …

Examination Of Novel Cardiac Mechanisms Influencing Mitochondrial Proteomes During Diabetes Mellitus, Walter Baseler Jan 2012

Examination Of Novel Cardiac Mechanisms Influencing Mitochondrial Proteomes During Diabetes Mellitus, Walter Baseler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cardiac complications, including diabetic cardiomyopathy, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality within diabetes mellitus. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been suggested as an underlying factor in the initiation and progression of the pathology. Cardiac mitochondria are characterized as two spatially distinct subpopulations within the myocyte including mitochondria located beneath the sarcolemma, termed subsarcolemmal mitochondria (SSM), and those located between myofibrils, termed interfibrillar mitochondria (IFM). Mitochondrial subpopulations have been shown to respond differently to physiological and pathological stimuli with the IFM being the most impacted in a type 1 diabetic setting. Proteomic evaluations within various models of diabetes have highlighted dynamic …

Physiological And Endocrine Factors Contributing To Acyclicity In The Captive Female African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Tina Lynn Dow Jan 2012

Physiological And Endocrine Factors Contributing To Acyclicity In The Captive Female African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Tina Lynn Dow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, the captive African elephant population in North America is not self-sustaining. An increase in acyclicity has been documented among post-pubertal females of all ages. Due to ethical issues and cost, importation of new animals is not feasible at this time; therefore, it is imperative that all post-pubertal females within zoological facilities be reproductively viable. The main objectives of these projects were to assess the reproductive status of the captive population and to identify contributing factors to acyclicity. In addition, prevention and treatment protocols were to be designed to promote reproductive proficiency in all reproductive-age females to avert the population …

Production And Evaluation Of Novel Exogenous Phytase Enzymes Using Several Testing Variables, Ashley Marie Evans Jan 2012

Production And Evaluation Of Novel Exogenous Phytase Enzymes Using Several Testing Variables, Ashley Marie Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Broiler chickens reared in the United States are mainly fed corn-soybean based diets. Most of the phosphorus in these diets is bound to a molecule called phytate; this source of phosphorus is unavailable to the bird because they lack adequate amount of endogenous phytase enzyme. Since the 1990's exogenous phytase enzymes have been incorporated in broiler diets to liberate the phytate-bound phosphorus. These enzymes must be able to resist thermal denaturation associated with pelleting and maintain high efficacy in the bird. Most of the literature focuses on single aspects of phytase efficacy. More specifically, experiments evaluate phytase based on either …

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall Jan 2012

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the most common operant procedure involving magnitude of reinforcement, single reinforcers, of one magnitude or the other, are available from the same source (with pigeons, a food hopper) at different times. The duration of access as a source of discriminative control by these reinforcers comes sometime after their onset, when one reinforcer continues for a longer duration than the other. Thus, reinforcers of different durations can be differentially reinforcing only after the passage of some time. In the current experiment, four pigeons responded on a single-key concurrent variable-time schedule of reinforcement. Two reinforcer durations, 2 s and 6 s, …

Avoidance Of Timeout From Response-Independent Schedules Of Food Or Sucrose Water With And Without A Limited Hold On Consumption, August F. Holtyn Jan 2012

Avoidance Of Timeout From Response-Independent Schedules Of Food Or Sucrose Water With And Without A Limited Hold On Consumption, August F. Holtyn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research on the relative aversiveness of timeout from lean and rich schedules of food delivery has yielded discrepant findings. Some research has shown that a lean schedule maintains higher avoidance response rates than a rich schedule (Thomas, 1964, 1965b; van Haaren & Anderson, 1998)---suggesting that timeout from a lean schedule is more aversive than timeout from a rich schedule---while other research has shown the opposite (D'Andrea, 1971; Richardson & Baron, 2008). The present study was based on the notion that the conflicting results may have arisen from differences in procedural details that influenced the effect of the food schedules on …
