A Study Of The Leadership Dimensions Of National Distinguished Principals, Judith Mccollum Jan 2012

A Study Of The Leadership Dimensions Of National Distinguished Principals, Judith Mccollum

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The identification and recruitment of effective school principals who can transform schools in the midst of today’s chaotic economic, social, and global environments require a thorough understanding of the research on effective leadership. Current research indicates that principals who exhibit transformational leadership and, most recently, instructional leadership, are the most successful by all measures, including school climate, teacher empowerment, community support, and high student performance results.

This study focused on a sample of principals from a population who recently received the distinction of a National Distinguished Principal (NDP) to determine if a correlation existed between their leadership dimensions and that …

Pleading As Information-Forcing, Alexander Reinert Jan 2012

Pleading As Information-Forcing, Alexander Reinert

Articles

Academics, judges, and practitioners have devoted much attention to the potential impact of the federal pleading standards announced in Ashcroft v. Iqbal, 556 U.S. 662 (2009), and Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly, 550 U.S. 544 (2007). Many have criticized Iqbal and Twombly on procedural, substantive, and policy grounds. And although most everyone agrees that the cases mark a break with past liberal pleading rules and have changed pleading practice, there is little agreement about precisely how the cases have affected ultimate outcomes. Indeed, there is much confusion about what exactly the new rules require of a pleader.

A Program To Improve The Reading Skills Of Eighth-Grade Students, Timothy Thurman Jan 2012

A Program To Improve The Reading Skills Of Eighth-Grade Students, Timothy Thurman

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The applied dissertation examined the effectiveness of Reader’s Workshop (Orehovec & Alley, 2003) on students’ reading skills on the SAT-10 state assessment and the Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading (STAR, Renaissance Learning, 2002).

The site of the applied dissertation was a school located in rural Alabama. Based on STAR tests administered in August 2008, 19 out of 48 (40%) of the 8th-grade students taking the STAR at the school that was the site of the applied dissertation scored below grade level in reading. The 8th-grade class for the 2009-2010 school year followed the same trend and produced scores …

The Foolosophy Of Justice And The Enigma Of Law, Peter Goodrich Jan 2012

The Foolosophy Of Justice And The Enigma Of Law, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article explores the symbolic meaning of legal images, particularly the figure of Justitia (Justice) and her blindfold, in 16th-century legal texts. It argues that these images, often overlooked, are enigmatic symbols rooted in legal and theological traditions, conveying meanings that have been forgotten over time. The blindfold, in particular, signifies the separation between divine and human law, emphasizing the limits of human understanding and the enigmatic nature of legal symbolism.

Extreme Makeover - Contract Law Edition: A New Home For Human Rights And Social Responsibility (Lessons From Israel), Eli Bukspan

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

The article proceeds as follows: Part II explores various aspects of the social transformation of private law in Israel, beginning with a discussion about the theoretical and practical roles of contract law-the "classic" and distinctive realm of "private" and voluntary law. This area leads to the legal assimilation of social responsibility and consideration for the expectations of others, promotes the development of a holistic approach to law, and exposes its social and public purpose. Consideration for the justified expectations of the other and for the fundamental principles of the legal system, even within the context of purely voluntary interactions, emphasizes …

Odyssey Of The Mind: Social Networking In Cyberschool, Michael Barbour, Cory Plough Jan 2012

Odyssey Of The Mind: Social Networking In Cyberschool, Michael Barbour, Cory Plough

Education Faculty Publications

K-12 online learning and cyber charter schools have grown at a tremendous rate over the past decade. At the same time, these online programs have struggled to provide the social spaces where students can interact that K-12 schools are traditionally able to provide. Social networking presents a unique opportunity to provide these kinds of social interactions in an online environment. In this article, we trace the development and use of social networking at one cyber charter school to extend the space for online instruction and provide opportunities for social interaction that online schools are often unable to provide.

Racial Inclusion, Exclusion And Segregation In Constitutional Law, Michelle Adams Jan 2012

Racial Inclusion, Exclusion And Segregation In Constitutional Law, Michelle Adams

Articles

In Part I of the Article, I examine early cases in which the Court described segregation as a form of resource "lock-up." In several cases leading up to Brown, the Court detailed how racial segregation allows a more dominant group to hoard substantial societal resources. In these early cases, the Court's focus was on segregation as a mechanism for excluding individuals from valuable benefits on the basis of race; it did not speak explicitly to the harms associated with racial classification schemes. In this Part of the Article, I also return to Brown v. Board of Education and explore the …

Multi-Contrast Photoacoustic Microscopy, Junjie Yao Jan 2012

Multi-Contrast Photoacoustic Microscopy, Junjie Yao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Photoacoustic microscopy is a hybrid imaging modality with high spatial resolution, moderate imaging depth, excellent imaging contrast and functional imaging capability. Taking full advantage of this powerful weapon, we have investigated different anatomical, functional, flow dynamic and metabolic parameter measurements using photoacoustic microscopy. Specifically, Evans-blue dye was used to enhance photoacoustic microscopy of capillaries; label-free transverse and axial blood flow was measured based on bandwidth broadening and time shift of the photoacoustic signals; metabolic rate of oxygen was quantified in vivo from all the five parameters measured by photoacoustic microcopy; whole cross-sectional imaging of small intestine was achieved on a …

Effects Of Hypoxia Exposure On Hepatic Cytochrome P450 1a (Cyp1a) Expression In Atlantic Croaker: Molecular Mechanisms Of Cyp1a Down-Regulation, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas Jan 2012

Effects Of Hypoxia Exposure On Hepatic Cytochrome P450 1a (Cyp1a) Expression In Atlantic Croaker: Molecular Mechanisms Of Cyp1a Down-Regulation, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Hypoxia-inducible factor-α (HIF-α) and cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) are biomarkers of environmental exposure to hypoxia and organic xenobiotic chemicals that act through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, respectively. Many aquatic environments heavily contaminated with organic chemicals, such as harbors, are also hypoxic. Recently, we and other scientists reported HIF-α genes are upregulated by hypoxia exposure in aquatic organisms, but the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia regulation of CYP1A expression have not been investigated in teleost fishes. As a first step in understanding the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia modulation of CYP1A expression in fish, we characterized CYP1A cDNA from croaker liver. Hypoxia exposure …

International Journal of Speleology

The troglomorphic millipede Brachydesmus troglobius Daday, 1889 (Polydesmida: Polydesmidae) secretes allomones from glands on both lateral surfaces of its body segments. The secretion was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis with electron and chemical ionization, and was shown to be composed of a mixture of benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzoylnitrile, benzoic acid and mandelonitrile benzoate. Hydrogen cyanide was qualitatively identified by the picric acid test. This is the first identification of these compounds in a cave-dwelling polydesmid.

Diversity And Community Assembly Patterns Of Epigean Vs. Troglobiont Spiders In The Iberian Peninsula, Pedro Cardoso Jan 2012

Diversity And Community Assembly Patterns Of Epigean Vs. Troglobiont Spiders In The Iberian Peninsula, Pedro Cardoso

International Journal of Speleology

Cave-obligate organisms usually have smaller ranges and their assemblages have higher beta diversity than their epigean counterparts. Phylogenetic and functional diversity is usually low in cave communities, leading to taxonomic and functional disharmony, with entire groups missing from the subterranean realm. The objective of this work is to compare range, beta diversity, phylogenetic and functional diversity, taxonomic and functional disharmony of epigean versus troglobiont spiders in the Iberian Peninsula.

The median extent of occurrence was found to be 33 times higher for epigean than for cave species. Beta diversity was significantly higher for troglobiont assemblages. Cave assemblages present lower phylogenetic …

Volcanic Caves: Priorities For Conserving The Azorean Endemic Troglobiont Species, Paulo A.V. Borges Prof., Pedro Cardoso, Isabel R. Amorim, Fernando Pereira, João P. Constância, João C. Nunes, Paulo Barcelos, Paulino Costa, Rosalina Gabriel, Maria L. Dapkevicius

International Journal of Speleology

Azorean lava-tubes and volcanic pits adequately sampled for arthropod fauna were evaluated for species diversity and rarity. An iterative partial multiple regression analysis was performed to produce a multi-criteria index (Importance Value for Cave Conservation, IV-CC) incorporating arthropod species diversity indices but also including indices qualifying cave geological and management features (e.g., the diversity of geological structures, threats, accessibility). Additionally, we calculated complementarity solutions (irreplaceability and Fraction-of-Spare measures) for each cave with different targets per species, i.e., the minimum number of caves needed for each species to be represented either once or twice. Our results clearly show that to preserve …

Epigenetic Events Suggest A Distinct Molecular Pathogenesis In Braf-Associated Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Ogechukwu Eze Jan 2012

Epigenetic Events Suggest A Distinct Molecular Pathogenesis In Braf-Associated Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Ogechukwu Eze

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

EPIGENETIC EVENTS SUGGEST A DISTINCT MOLECULAR PATHOGENESIS IN BRAF-ASSOCIATED PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER.

Ogechukwu Eze, Lee Starker, William Long, Robert Udelsman, Peyman Björklund, and Tobias Carling. Department of Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA.

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) associated with a somatic V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) V600E mutation has been associated with a more aggressive phenotype (i.e. extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastasis, high TNM stage and recurrence) than those with wildtype (WT) BRAF. The underlying molecular mechanism for this association is incompletely clarified. Epigenetic alterations, such as DNA methylation participate with genetic abnormalities …
