The Study Of Vinyl Ester Copolymers Derived From Bio-Sourced Fatty Acids, Hai Wang Jan 2012

The Study Of Vinyl Ester Copolymers Derived From Bio-Sourced Fatty Acids, Hai Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Biobased polymers have attracted significant attention since the 1990s. Research has focused on the conversion of biomass, such as crop oils, into useful polymeric materials. The Departments of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the University of North Dakota have developed a process to convert crop oils into jetfuel and a suite of other chemicals including fatty acids with a variety of molecular weights. This dissertation focuses on the preparation and property measurements of thermoplastics using monomers, especially linear vinyl esters (LVEs), which originate from cracked oil-based fatty acids. Commercial LVEs were used in this dissertation study in order to explore …

Microbubble Mediated Thrombus Dissolution With Diagnostic Ultrasound For The Treatment Of Chronic Venous Thrombi., Shelby Kutty, Juefei Wu, James M. Hammel, Feng Xie, Shunji Gao, Lucas K. Drvol, John Lof, Stanley J. Radio, Stacey L. Therrien, David A. Danford, Thomas R. Porter

Journal Articles: Pediatrics

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter (CVC) thrombi result in significant morbidity in children, and currently available treatments are associated with significant risk. We sought to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of microbubble (MB) enhanced sonothrombolysis for aged CVC associated thrombi in vivo.

METHODS AND RESULTS: A model of chronic indwelling CVC in the low superior vena cava with thrombus in situ was established after feasibility and safety testing in 7 pigs; and subsequently applied for repeated, sonothrombolytic treatments in 9 pigs (total 24 treatments). Baseline intracardiac echocardiography (ICE, 10.5F, Siemens), fluoroscopy and saline flushing confirmed the absence of any pre-existing CVC thrombus. …

There Is A World Elsewhere: Preliminary Studies On Alternatives To Interest-Based Bargaining, F. Peter Philips Jan 2012

There Is A World Elsewhere: Preliminary Studies On Alternatives To Interest-Based Bargaining, F. Peter Philips

Articles & Chapters

Studies of selected ancient dispute resolution methods suggest that interest-based bargaining is culturally specific and may be inapplicable in societies where individual gratification is not as highly valued as social harmony or spiritual coherence.

Centering The Immigrant In The Inter/National Imagination (Part Iii): Aoki, Rawls, And Immigration, Robert S. Chang Jan 2012

Centering The Immigrant In The Inter/National Imagination (Part Iii): Aoki, Rawls, And Immigration, Robert S. Chang

Faculty Articles

Fifteen years ago, Keith Aoki and Professor Robert Chang published "Centering the Immigrant in the Inter/National Imagination" in an early LatCrit symposium. Fifteen years later Professor Chang uses the occasion of the current Symposium to revisit conversations with Keith about centering the immigrant in political theory, as he addresses the issue of immigration, the rights of immigrants, and what is to be our national self-conception. What follows is a sketch that shows how centering the immigrant exposes the inattention paid to the immigrant and the issue of immigration in social contract theory. It focuses on how the immigrant might be …

Characteristics Of Kentucky Agricultural Operations Participating In Nrcs Conservation Programs, Carmen T. Agouridis Jan 2012

Characteristics Of Kentucky Agricultural Operations Participating In Nrcs Conservation Programs, Carmen T. Agouridis

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) designs and promotes a wide variety of conservation practices and programs that enhance the environment by reducing soil erosion, improving water quality, and enhancing and creating wildlife habitat. The impact of these practices and programs is largely dependent on the voluntary participation of landowners. Thus, central to the success of the NRCS conservation programs is an understanding of the characteristics of landowners and operations participating in these programs.

Using operator and operation characteristics from the 1997, 2002, and 2007 Censuses of Agriculture and controlling for county fixed effects, this study 1) identifies significant characteristics …

Influence Of Medical Marijuana Programs On Controlled Substance Utilization, James A. Farley Ii Jan 2012

Influence Of Medical Marijuana Programs On Controlled Substance Utilization, James A. Farley Ii

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Currently there are no studies examining the impact of medical cannabis programs on controlled substance prescribing. The intent of this study is to conduct a preliminary investigation into whether cannabis substitution for prescription drugs results in lower rates of controlled substance use. The hypothesis is that controlled substance use (in this project, defined by controlled substance supply) will decline in states after the introduction of medical cannabis programs.

State and year–specific per capita retail distributions of the seven most commonly prescribed opioid drugs (fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, and oxycodone) were obtained from the Automation of Reports and Consolidated …

An Analysis Of Laboratory Inspections At The University Of Kentucky, Rachel Eldridge Jan 2012

An Analysis Of Laboratory Inspections At The University Of Kentucky, Rachel Eldridge

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Recent news stories about laboratory accidents in which students were severely injured and killed have brought much-needed attention to lab safety. Creating a positive safety climate on college and university campuses is very important in reducing accidents. At the University of Kentucky, all laboratories are inspected once every year, and the results are recorded in a lab inspection database. These data include the department, building, lab classification, type of violation, room number, and the name of the PI (Principal Investigator). I want to analyze inspections to find out whether department and the lab classification are significant in looking at violations. …

Changing The Conversation In Education Law: Political Geography And Virtual Schooling Book Review Essay, Aaron J. Saiger Jan 2012

Changing The Conversation In Education Law: Political Geography And Virtual Schooling Book Review Essay, Aaron J. Saiger

Faculty Scholarship

In Five Miles Away, A World Apart, James E. Ryan concludes that the educational reforms of the hour, school accountability and school choice, will exacerbate rather than undermine the systematic educational advantages enjoyed by wealthier Americans. Paul Peterson, in his Saving Schools, argues that increasingly centralizing American schools have become sufficiently centralized that, as a labor-intensive industry, few productivity gains are available from governance reform, even as demand escalates for the customization of education to individual needs. Both volumes therefore pin their hopes for change upon political geography-the relationship between people and educational institutions in space. Ryan argues that changing …

Factors Influencing Web Tenure In A Tropical Spider And Comparison Between Forest And Non-Forest Habitats, Daniella R. Barraza Jan 2012

Factors Influencing Web Tenure In A Tropical Spider And Comparison Between Forest And Non-Forest Habitats, Daniella R. Barraza

Scripps Senior Theses

Webs are fundamental to the ecology of Nephila clavipes, the golden orb-weaver spider, because they serve as sites for prey capture, reproduction, competition, predation, and parasitism. In addition to the presence of the female N. clavipes, males and kleptoparasites reside on the web in varying numbers. Webs are also found in clusters with conspecific females. Web site selection and length of web tenure is a behavioral decision vital to the spider’s fitness and the ecology of her species. I conducted a field census to quantify these factors and analyze their influence on web tenure, compare web ecology between a forest …

Adenine Uracil Guanine: An Exploration Of Certainty In Science, Alicia M. Hendrix Jan 2012

Adenine Uracil Guanine: An Exploration Of Certainty In Science, Alicia M. Hendrix

Scripps Senior Theses

Collaboration and communication between conventionally diverse fields can allow for deeper understanding and clearer analysis of the concepts within each. Two fields traditionally seen as dichotomous are those of art and science. Historically they approach problems in opposite ways. However, I would argue that they in fact investigate very similar questions, hoping to discover the ways that the world works. It makes sense, then, that historically these fields have sometimes been able to interact. Artists have engaged with science by creating work through scientific processes including crossbreeding flowers, genetically modifying organisms, and sequencing nucleotides. Others have referenced scientific ideas, like …

Artificial Intelligence And The Technological Sublime: How Virtual Characters Influence The Landscape Of Modern Sublimity, Kyle Craft-Jenkins Jan 2012

Artificial Intelligence And The Technological Sublime: How Virtual Characters Influence The Landscape Of Modern Sublimity, Kyle Craft-Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations--English

The principle objective of this thesis is to expand the term “technological sublime” to include technologies of artificial intelligence. In defining new realms of the technological sublime, we must not only consider the ecological integration of technology within natural surroundings, but also appreciate modern technological objects that instigate sublime experiences. This work examines science fictional portrayals of interactions with sentient artificial intelligence in I, Robot, 2001: A Space Odyssey and other major works of science fiction. In each of these works, characters who encounter technologies possessing artificial intelligence share sublime experiences. This thesis considers various levels of embodiment associated with …

Driving Americans' Perception Of Recreation: Awaiting The Park Service's Long-Term Solution To Access In Yellowstone National Park, Thomas M. Duncan

Jeffrey S. Moorad Sports Law Journal (1994 - )

The article discusses recreation activities in the U.S. Park Service (USPS) system and the USPS' policies regarding snowmobile access in Yellowstone National Park as of September 2012. The author argues that the U.S. government, in its interpretation of the National Park Service Organic Act, is risking the loss of Yellowstone National Park's natural resources. The competing interests of recreational enthusiasts and preservationists are examined.

Haptics-Augmented Training Software For Undergraduate Engineering Mechanics, Ernur Karadogan, Robert L. Williams, David R. Moore, Tian Luo

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This paper presents the development efforts for a set of software activities and tutorials to augment teaching and learning in standard required undergraduate engineering mechanics courses. Using these software activities, students can change parameters, predict answers, compare outcomes, interact with animations, and feel the results. The overall system aims to increase teaching and learning effectiveness by rendering the concepts compelling, fun, and engaging. The problem with current examples and homework problems is that they are flat, static, boring, and non-engaging, which may lead to student attrition and a less than full grasp of fundamental principles. We implement integration of haptics …

The Hidden Limits Of The Charitable Deduction: An Introduction To Hypersalience, Lilian V. Faulhaber Jan 2012

The Hidden Limits Of The Charitable Deduction: An Introduction To Hypersalience, Lilian V. Faulhaber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Behavioral economics introduced the concept of salience to law and economics. In the area of tax policy, salience refers to the prominence of taxes in the minds of taxpayers. This article complicates the literature on salience and taxation by introducing the concept of “hypersalience,” which is in many ways the mirror image of hidden taxation. While a revenue-raising tax provision must be hidden for taxpayers to underestimate their tax bill, a revenue-reducing tax provision – such as a deduction, exclusion, or credit – must be more than fully salient for taxpayers to underestimate their tax bill. In other words, the …
