Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. is an important species of the family Brassicaceae with immense medicinal value. The main goal of this study was to investigate the antigenotoxic effects of different concentrations (0.1%-1.0%) of chloroform extract of B. juncea seeds on mercury-induced (0.75 ppm) genotoxic effects in root cells of Allium cepa. Three different modes of treatment were performed: pretreatment, posttreatment, and simultaneous treatment. For pretreatment, freshly emerged root tips were first treated with different concentrations of seed extract for 3 h and then treated with Hg for 3 h. For posttreatment, the roots were first treated with Hg and then …

Up Like Weeds, Danielle Burns
Up Like Weeds, Danielle Burns
LSU Master's Theses
A child playing with matches is forgivable. Kids are curious. They want to explore adult activities through play. Does it stay innocent when that child experiments with the effects of firecrackers in frogs and gasoline on animals? What happens when they light the match? The grey area between childhood innocence and realization of wrong intrigues me and I find it fascinating how adult perspectives of such malicious deeds often vary. Up Like Weeds questions these responses using a collection of narrative prints and freestanding woodcut figures. They visually tell five tales of children in a rural environment acting out in …

LSU Master's Theses
Orange pottery is a Late Archaic (5000-3000 B.P.) fiber-tempered pottery found throughout northern and central Florida, though the heartland of the ware is considered to be in the northeastern part of Florida. Orange pottery is most commonly plain, but incised Orange pottery is frequently found at shell ring sites on the eastern Florida coast. Prior examinations of Orange Incised pottery have indicated design considerable homogeneity in design at Orange Period sites. The highest percentage of decorated pottery is found at shell ring sites. For this thesis, I conducted an analysis and comparison of Orange Incised pottery collections from two contemporaneous …
Development Of A Frozen Yogurt Fortified With A Nano-Emulsion Containing Purple Rice Bran Oil, Luis Alonso Alfaro Sanabria
Development Of A Frozen Yogurt Fortified With A Nano-Emulsion Containing Purple Rice Bran Oil, Luis Alonso Alfaro Sanabria
LSU Master's Theses
The U.S. frozen dessert business, including retail and foodservice markets, is the largest in the world. There is a need for deserts that offer better nutritional attributes, such as antioxidants than traditional deserts. Purple rice bran oil (PRBO) is an excellent source of natural antioxidants including tocopherol, tocotrienol, and oryzanol. Adding nano-emulsions of purple rice bran oil (NPRBO) to many products including frozen yogurts (FY) will improve the nutritional profile of the product by substantially increasing the natural antioxidant content. This fortification may have the potential to broaden the FY market. The objectives of this study were to develop and …
Cursed: An Experiment In Gender Roles In Video Game Concept Art, Gillian Renk
Cursed: An Experiment In Gender Roles In Video Game Concept Art, Gillian Renk
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this project was to create a game concept, in the form of an art book, that featured characters who play somewhat nontraditional, reversed roles as an experiment in gender equality in video games. This was mainly done with a slant toward women, as women are becoming a larger part of the gaming community and, as such, may seek games that are more aligned with their own interests. Character designs were done with the individuals' roles in mind as well as how their appearances would make the player sympathetic toward them. For instance, as explained in an article …
Using Ecological Niche Modeling To Resolve Cryptic Taxa Within The Greenside Darter Species Complex, Jack Alphonse Kosmicki
Using Ecological Niche Modeling To Resolve Cryptic Taxa Within The Greenside Darter Species Complex, Jack Alphonse Kosmicki
Honors Program Theses
A major challenge for systematists is clearly identifying species early after a speciation event (Frost and Kluge, 1994; Wiens and Servedio, 2000; Coyne and Orr, 2004). Traditionally species delimitation is made based on morphological characteristics, behavioral differences, and/or genetic data. However, for cryptic species lineages, these approaches do not work as well because the lineages have subtle overlapping morphological and behavioral differences and lineage sorting may not be complete (Raxworthy et al., 2007). A far less common approach is to use ecological niche models (ENMs) to help identify new species. This approach holds strong potential for cryptic species in which …

Lost In Translation: In Search Of The "Real" "Wulf And Eadwacer", John Anderson
Honors Program Theses
In this thesis, I seek to uncover the nature of translation through examining those elements of "Wulf and Eadwacer" that work against producing a definitive translation. Using the combined lenses of literary analysis and the philosophy of language, I will also investigate the ties between translation and interpretation inherent in this work and what we can learn about the project of translation in general, ultimately arriving at my own re-presentation of the text. I will then briefly consider how this can inform our approaches to translations of other texts, in particular our understanding of translations of the Bible, one of …
Pulling Back The Veil On Stem Cell Research: The Generation Of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells As An Alternative To Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Sara Ternes
Honors Program Theses
Stem cell research has captured the imagination of many in society, and although it holds hope for repairing the human body, curing disease, and alleviating human suffering, the effects of this pioneering technology present profound ethical and legal implications. While a general consensus exists that the use of adult stem cells is ethically and morally just, embryonic stem (ES) cell research has generated significant debate in both the scientific and legal communities. Decades of legislation and policymaking have led to the creation of a set of human subject research principles that are now well recognized and rooted in the inherent …

Determining The Virulence Of Corn Pathogen Fusarium Verticillioides Utilizing Deletion Mutants Lacking Genes Fv_00027 Or Fv_Nps6, Abigail Zieman
Honors Program Theses
Fusarium verticillioides is an important fungal pathogen of com. Many pathogens have virulent genes which are genes that increase infectivity of the pathogen. After a bioinformatics study, it was determined that genes Fv _ 00027 and Fv _ NPS6 are potential virulent genes in F. verticillioides. To determine if either gene ·contributes to the virulence of the fungus, deletion mutants of F. verticillioides were created lacking either Fv _ 00027 or Fv _ NPS6 genes. These deletion mutants were utilized in an optimized com assay to determine the effect of infectivity on com. To test these deletion mutants, com seeds …

Morphological Variation Among Populations Of Uca Rapax In The Gulf Of Mexico And Northern Caribbean, Amanda L. Brase
Honors Program Theses
This study explores the relationship between phenotypic variation in the carapace morphology and the geographic distribution of Uca rapax population in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and the Northern Caribbean Sea. Carapace or body shape in 37 populations is analyzed quantitatively and correlated with two habitat variables: salinity and location. Although there is morphological overlap among populations grouped by habitat, they are significantly different when sorted by geographic region. Populations from the northern and western Gulf of Mexico diverge from those in Florida, the Yucatan and the northern Caribbean implying restricted larval dispersal and/or differential habitat selection.

Genetic Structure And Disease Prevalence Of Boreal Toads (Bufo Boreas) In Glacier National Park, Brett Rebekah Addis
Genetic Structure And Disease Prevalence Of Boreal Toads (Bufo Boreas) In Glacier National Park, Brett Rebekah Addis
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Amphibians are more threatened than any other vertebrate group, with 41% of species experiencing declines. The causes of most declines are not well understood, though many declines have been linked to the emerging infectious disease chytridiomycosis. Additionally, amphibians are physiologically constrained to moist habitats and considered poor dispersers; thus, they may suffer genetic consequences of population isolation. To address threats to the persistence of boreal toads (Bufo boreas) in Glacier National Park, USA, I genotyped 551 individuals at 11 microsatellite loci and used spatially independent (STRUCTURE) and spatially explicit (GENELAND) Bayesian methods to describe population genetic structure and identify barriers …
Adopting Killer Ignatian Apps For Facebook: Employing Jesuit Pedagogy To Enrich Student Involvement In Social Media, John C. Freeman
Adopting Killer Ignatian Apps For Facebook: Employing Jesuit Pedagogy To Enrich Student Involvement In Social Media, John C. Freeman
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Social researchers Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa recently reported that nearly half of undergraduates today “showed almost no gains in learning in their first two years of college.” Two sources of the problem emerged in the study: “instructors…more focused on their own faculty research than teaching younger students, who in turn are more tuned in to their social lives.” While few would argue that the social dimension is not an important element of the student's learning experience, students‟ absorption in social media too often reflects a mere frittering and twittering away of their time. Why not meet students where they …

Performing Arts And Community Exchange (Pace) And The Fulfillment Of The Ignatian Educational Promise, Janna Goodwin, Amie Dowling
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article describes the development and evolution of a 2009 University of San Francisco (USF) course, Performing Arts and Community Exchange (PACE), and its most visible development: a devised, collaborative, dance theatre performance, Man.Alive. Stories from the edge of incarceration to the flight of imagination. PACE, which reflects and richly embodies Ignatian standards, can be used as a touchstone for appreciating and evaluating similar or resonant work across disciplines and at other institutions. Furthermore, contemplation of its pedagogy, methods, and outcomes may lead to a productive reconsideration of the kind of performing arts curriculum Jesuit universities should embrace.

Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks In High Elevation Whitebark Pine Forests: The Effects Of Tree Host Species And Blister Rust Infection Severity On Beetle Productivity, Edith Mary Dooley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In recent years, the mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae) has caused dramatic levels of mortality of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). This keystone and foundation tree species is also being killed by the exotic fungus, Cronartium ribicola, which causes the disease white pine blister rust (WPBR). This study examines MPB productivity in whitebark pine compared to that in lodgepole pine, and also in whitebark pine of varying WPBR infection severities to determine if either of these host factors contributes to the current, dramatic MPB outbreaks in whitebark pine. To evaluate host tree effects on MPB, I tracked attack densities, emergence …
Northern River Otter Population Assessment And Connectivity In Western Montana, Darin Edward Newton
Northern River Otter Population Assessment And Connectivity In Western Montana, Darin Edward Newton
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) are elusive and difficult to monitor, and little is known about their movement patterns or how populations are structured on the landscape. Otters are sensitive to degradation of aquatic systems, mostly due to loss of prey. This is evident in the Upper Clark Fork River (UCFR), Montana, which has been polluted from decades of mining activity. My objectives for this project were to determine otter population substructuring and connectivity in western Montana and Idaho, and produce a habitat assessment and population estimate for otters in the UCFR. I used genotypic data from otter tissue samples …
