Cleveland Memory
From the forward by Darrell A.Young: "The city fathers have been called visionaries. The city has been studied by architects, planners, engineers and the like from all over the country. What is it about Beachwood that has attracted so much attention?
To be certain, there is something magical that has taken place over the last 80 years in Beachwood and Jeffrey Morris has finally documented the historical blueprint from which we can study and learn. This book is the first opportunity to understand our heritage and to delve into the intellect that forged this wonderful community."

Film Series Commentaries
“The Sword And The Screen: The Japanese Period Film 1915-1960” was a groundbreaking collaboration between the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University and the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, marking the first time Japan’s national film archive had co-sponsored an event with a foreign university. The film series presented rare Japanese samurai films from the collection of the National Film Center, highlighting the abundant variety of Japan's most famous film genre. There are social critiques, melodramas, comedies, ghost films and even musicals, directed by some of the masters of Japanese cinema who, …

Reading The Talmud: Developing Independence In Gemara Learning, Henry M. Abramson
Lander College of Arts and Sciences Books
Reading the Talmud is a textbook designed for students who want to move beyond translations to learning the Talmud on their own. This book presents a proven, “no shortcuts” approach based on the traditional Yeshiva model. If you have enough Hebrew skills to work out a Biblical verse, and a healthy determination to toil in the Talmud, this book will help you develop independence in Gemara learning.
This is the second edition of this book.
Childhood Absence Epilepsy And Varied Effect On Performance On Attention And Motor Tasks, With Correlation To Eeg And Fmri, Jose Luis Gonzalez
Childhood Absence Epilepsy And Varied Effect On Performance On Attention And Motor Tasks, With Correlation To Eeg And Fmri, Jose Luis Gonzalez
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Childhood absence epilepsy is characterized by a distinct 3-4 Hz spike and wave discharge seen on EEG that is usually associated with a brief loss of consciousness. It is a general form of epilepsy believed to affect the entire brain. We studied children with childhood absence epilepsy with simultaneous fMRI/EEG while they were doing a behavioral test, either continuous performance task (CPT), or repetitive tapping task (RTT). We were interested in the effect seizures would have on their performance on the CPT and RTT task, an attention and motor task respectively. We found that children would be affected earlier or …
Vector-Mediated Gene Delivery To Model Striatal Interneuron Loss In Severe Tourette Syndrome, Andrew Kobets
Vector-Mediated Gene Delivery To Model Striatal Interneuron Loss In Severe Tourette Syndrome, Andrew Kobets
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Tourette syndrome is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that causes significant morbidity for pediatric and adult patients and is present in up to 1% of the population. Genetic, functional and volumetric analyses suggest that the core neuropathology of Tourette syndrome resides within the dysfunctional cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuitry of the basal ganglia. Patients can have 5% smaller striatal volumes when compared to age-matched controls and up to 60% reductions in small populations of regulatory interneurons concurrent with severe clinical symptomatology. These interneurons are thought to regulate the immense cortical input that is fed into the striatum and modulate depolarization of neighboring medium spiny …

The Legacy Of Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) And The Development Of Mathematical Models In Biological Oceanography, Thomas R. Anderson, Wendy C. Gentleman
Journal of Marine Research
Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) is remembered for his pioneering work in the development of marine ecosystem models during the mid-20th century. Using models that were necessarily simple because of the limited understanding of plankton physiology at the time, as well as the fact that calculations had to be done by hand, Riley studied the processes that control plankton stocks, production, and nutrient cycling, notably at Georges Bank. His great achievement lay not so much in the simulation of plankton dynamics per se, but rather in bringing to the fore the concept of using modeling as a means of explaining …

We describe a model designed to simulate the shell carbonate budget of an oyster reef. We identify five parameters descriptive of basic characteristics of the shell carbonate budget of a reef that limit simulation accuracy. Two describe the TAZ (taphonomically-active zone) and the distribution of shell carbonate within it. One is the taphonomic rate in the TAZ. Two determine the volume contribution of shell carbonate and the taphonomic loss rate within the reef framework. For Mid-Atlantic estuaries, model simulations suggest that reef accretion only occurs if oyster abundance is near carrying capacity. Simulations further suggest that reef accretion is infeasible …

Stoney Road Out Of Eden: The Struggle To Recover Insurance For Armenian Genocide Deaths And Its Implications For The Future Of State Authority, Contract Rights, And Human Rights, Jeffrey W. Stempel, Sarig Armenian, David Mcclure

The Armenian Genocide during the waning days of the Ottoman Empire continues to represent one of history’s underappreciated atrocities. Comparatively few people even know about the 1.5 million deaths or the government-sponsored extermination attempt that provided Hitler with a blueprint for the Nazi Holocaust. Unlike the Holocaust, however, there was never any accounting demanded of those responsible for the Armenian Genocide. In the aftermath of both tragedies, insurers seized upon the resulting disarray and victimization to deny life insurance benefits owed as a result of the killings. American-based litigation to vindicate rights under the Armenian polices faced substantial legal and …

Further Support For Mental Health Parity Law And Mandatory Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Benefits, Stacey A. Tovino
Scholarly Works
In this Article, I provide additional support for my recent proposal* to extend federal mental health parity law and mandatory mental health and substance use disorder benefits to all public healthcare program beneficiaries and private health plan members. I begin by examining health-related doctrine outside the context of mental health insurance law, including disability discrimination law, civil rights and human rights law, health information confidentiality law, healthcare reform law, and child and adult health and welfare law, and I find that not one of these laws provides inferior legal protections or benefits for individuals with mental illness. I also analyze …
Fidelity To Law And The Moral Pluralism Premise, Katherine R. Kruse
Fidelity To Law And The Moral Pluralism Premise, Katherine R. Kruse
Scholarly Works
In Fidelity to Law, Wendel presents and defends a comprehensive theory of legal ethics with two interrelated arguments: a functional argument that law deserves respect because of its capacity to settle normative controversy in a morally pluralistic society; and a normative argument that law deserves respect because democratic lawmaking processes respect the equality and dignity of citizens. This review essay questions Wendel’s move from the premise of moral pluralism to his conclusion that the function of law is to settle normative controversy in society on both practical and theoretical grounds. Practically, it argues that law lacks the capacity to …

Federal Constitutions: The Keystone Of Nested Commons Governance, Blake Hudson
Federal Constitutions: The Keystone Of Nested Commons Governance, Blake Hudson
Journal Articles
The constitutional structure of a federal system of government can undermine effective natural capital management across scales, from local to global. Federal constitutions that grant subnational governments virtually exclusive regulatory authority over certain types of natural capital appropriation — such as resources appropriated by private forest management or other land-use-related economic development activities — entrench a legally defensible natural capital commons in those jurisdictions. For example, the same constitution that may legally facilitate poor forest-management practices by private landowners in the southeastern United States may complicate international negotiations related to forest management and climate change. Both the local and international …

Does The Afferent Tubular Segment In An Orthotopic Bladder Substitution Compromise Ureteric Antireflux Properties? An Experimental Study In Dogs, Hassan Abol- Enein, Nuzhat Faruqui, Nashwa Barakat, Ahmed A. Shokeir
Section of Urology
Objective: To study the effects of a short ureter on renal function and histology in an orthotopic bladder substitution model using a long afferent limb, in a canine model.
Materials and methods: The study included nine adult mongrel dogs. A 40-cm segment of ileum was isolated, the distal half detubularized, configured into a U-shape and sutured to form a flat plate; this was then used to augment the bladder. The proximal half of the isolated ileum remained in continuity with the enterocystoplasty to form an isoperistaltic ileal ‘chimney’. The left ureter was divided at its lumbar part and …
Toward A Nexus Of Virtue, Ronald J. Colombo
Toward A Nexus Of Virtue, Ronald J. Colombo
Washington and Lee Law Review
Corporate law, like all law, should be directed toward the common good. The common good requires that corporate activity be restrained, if not actively directed, by human virtue. An analysis of the corporate enterprise suggests that those corporate actors with the greatest stake in the exercise of virtue, and best positioned to influence corporate activity via the exercise of virtuous judgment, are the corporation’s officers. Thus, one of the primary objectives of corporate law should be to promote virtue among corporate officers. Contrary to what some might assume, the promotion of virtue among corporate officers need not entail a promulgation …
Bio-Cultural Knowledge And The Challenges Of Intellectual Property Rights Regimes For African Development, Ikechi Mgbeoji
Bio-Cultural Knowledge And The Challenges Of Intellectual Property Rights Regimes For African Development, Ikechi Mgbeoji
Articles & Book Chapters
African states have, since the colonial encounter, been part of the international regimes on intellectual property rights. Formal accession to various treaties and conventions on intellectual property rights instruments should not be mistaken for actual internalization of the policies, structures and norms required for reaping the promised benefits of participation in such regimes. There is ample evidence showing that most African states do not have the requisite structures for fruitful engagement with international intellectual property rights regimes. Until this anomaly is rectified, African states' engagement with international intellectual property regimes will remain structurally flawed and inimical to the human development …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Technology Use And Teachers' Self-Efficacy, Knowledge And Experience, Jenith Mishne
Theses and Dissertations
Dramatic changes have occurred in the area of technology development and society's use of technology in daily life and the workplace. Yet in many classrooms, technology integration remains a significant challenge for educators, creating a digital disconnect that threatens to handicap students as they graduate and compete for jobs in the 21st century. The purpose of this study was to examine whether teacher self-efficacy, teacher knowledge, and teaching experience influence levels of technology integration in the classroom. The research question asked was: How well do measures of self-efficacy, teacher knowledge and teaching experience predict teachers' scores on a state measure …

Women In Leadership: Strategies For Work-Life Balance, Kerri Heath
Theses and Dissertations
Although women have been a prominent presence in the workplace for over 5 decades, the struggles surrounding work-life balance still drive some women to opt out of career opportunities. Women now make up more than half of the populations at universities and in the work force, yet they are not advancing into the highest positions at the same rate as their male counterparts. This study seeks to empower women who desire both families and careers by analyzing the work-life balance strategies of women in leadership. Data collected from interviews of 22 women leaders are used to identify strategies that integrate …

Maternal Nutrition During Mid-Gestation Influences Gene Expression Essential For Intramuscular Adipose Tissue And Muscle Development In Bovine Fetuses, Tracy D. Jennings
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Given the potential variation in forage quantity and quality available to gestating cows, it is possible to encounter periods of nutrient restriction, while supplementation decisions could lead to periods of over-nutrition. Maternal nutrition during mid-late gestation has shown to influence adipose development and myogenesis in the fetuses of various species; however, bovine research is limited. The objective of this experiment was to determine whether maternal nutrition during mid-gestation alters genetic expression of fetal adipogenic and myogenic regulatory factors, resulting in differences in adipose development and muscle characteristics of the bovine fetus. Twenty-two bred Angus crossbred heifers (BW = 527.73 ± …

The rapid emergence and advancement of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) has made it possible for their incorporation into modern agriculture. Satellite imagery has been used in the past to increase yields and profits while simultaneously decreasing chemical use and environmental damage. However, satellite imagery has some limitations in regards to agriculture that sUAS has the potential to supplement and correct. This study will present the technical and legal integration of sUAS into private agriculture in the United States. Multiple flights were conducted at various altitudes to understand the lowest possible altitude for safe and useful image recovery. A comparison …
