Premalignant Oral Lesion Immunobiology: Immune Modulation And Vaccination, Anna-Maria Alicia De Costa Jan 2012

Premalignant Oral Lesion Immunobiology: Immune Modulation And Vaccination, Anna-Maria Alicia De Costa

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

While studies have indicated that squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) is associated with immune suppression, these studies did not analyze the immune response at the dysplastic stage. This study utilized a mouse model of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO)-induced oral carcinogenesis to examine the alterations in immune phenotype at the premalignant and malignant stages of HNSCC. Cervical lymph nodes of HNSCC-bearing mice were found to contain a greater number of cells, including a greater number of conventional (Tconv) and regulatory (Treg) T cells, compared to lymph nodes of control and premalignant lesion-bearing mice. Premalignant lesion-bearing mouse lymph nodes …

The Role Of Cd147 In Breast Cancer Progression, George Daniel Grass Jan 2012

The Role Of Cd147 In Breast Cancer Progression, George Daniel Grass

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S., approximately 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year, while an additional 230,500 women will be newly diagnosed with invasive breast disease. Despite tremendous advancement leading to earlier detection and novel therapeutic approaches, recurrent metastatic breast cancer remains a major cause of mortality. Invasive breast cancer cells employ specialized actin-rich protrusions called invadopodia, which are enriched in proteases, to degrade the extracellular matrix and these structures correlate with metastasis in vivo. The multifunctional immunoglobulin superfamily protein emmprin (CD147) is highly enriched on the surface of malignant breast cancer cells and is associated with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) …

The Epigenetic Regulation Of Cubilin And The Physiological Role Of This Receptor In Maintaining The Homeostasis Of Serum Albumin And Hdl, Sayed Obaidullah Aseem Jan 2012

The Epigenetic Regulation Of Cubilin And The Physiological Role Of This Receptor In Maintaining The Homeostasis Of Serum Albumin And Hdl, Sayed Obaidullah Aseem

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cubilin is an endocytic receptor capable of mediating the endocytosis of multiple ligands including High Density Lipoprotein apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-1) and albumin. It is highly expressed on the epithelium of intestinal villi and renal proximal tubules. In the kidney, endocytosis mediated by cubilin and its co-receptor megalin is the principal mechanism for proximal tubule reabsorption of filtered proteins, such as albumin and apoA-1. Yet, the consequences of cubilin deficiency on the blood levels of albumin and apoA-1 have not been studied. Furthermore, cubilin is downregulated in chronic diseases such as diabetes. However, little is known about the regulation of cubilin …

The Art Of Work Autonomy: A Test Of Its Influence On Job Embeddedness, Qian Jiang, Chris W. Wright, Amy Smith Jan 2012

The Art Of Work Autonomy: A Test Of Its Influence On Job Embeddedness, Qian Jiang, Chris W. Wright, Amy Smith

Modern Psychological Studies

Mitchell, Holtom, Lee, Sablynski, and Erez (2001) demonstrated that Job Embeddedness is connected to intent to leave and voluntary turnover in employment. Previous researchers have also found that Work Autonomy predicts variables similar to Job Embeddedness (Mitchell et al., 2001). We investigated the factors that impact why people stay at their jobs by examining the relationship between Work Autonomy and Job Embeddedness. Data from 190 currently or previously employed participants were collected. As hypothesized, Work Autonomy was strongly correlated with on/off-the-job fit, on/off-the job sacrifice, on-the-job links and overall Job Embeddedness. However it was not correlated with off-the-job links. Implications …

When Should Philosophers Be Silent?, Jason Decker, Charles Taliaferro Jan 2012

When Should Philosophers Be Silent?, Jason Decker, Charles Taliaferro

Philosophy Faculty Work

Are there general precepts governing when philosophers should not conduct inquiry on a given topic? When, if ever, should a philosopher just be silent? In this paper we look at a number of practical, epistemic, and moral arguments for philosophical silence. Some are quite general, and suggest that it is best never to engage in philosophical inquiry, while others are more domain – or context – specific. We argue that these arguments fail to establish their conclusions. We do, however, try to identify and defend several substantive constraints on philosophical dialogue and inquiry. In practice, though, respecting these constraints needn’t …

Surgery Faculty Publications

Radiotherapy (RT) and interferon-alfa-2b (IFN α-2b) have individually been used for adjuvant therapy stage III melanoma with high-risk pathologic features. We hypothesized that concurrent adjuvant RT and IFN α-2b may decrease the risk of regional recurrence following surgery with acceptable toxicity. A prospective multicenter phase I/II study was conducted to evaluate hypofractionated RT with concurrent IFN. Induction IFN α-2b, 20 MU/m2/d, was administered IV ×5 consecutive days every week for 4 weeks. Next, RT 30 Gy in 5 fractions was given with concurrent IFN α-2b, 10 MU/m2 SQ 3 times per week on days alternating with …

Β-Secretases, Alzheimer's Disease, And Down Syndrome, Robin L. Webb, M. Paul Murphy Jan 2012

Β-Secretases, Alzheimer's Disease, And Down Syndrome, Robin L. Webb, M. Paul Murphy

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Individuals with Down Syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology by approximately 40 years of age. Chromosome 21 harbors several genes implicated in AD, including the amyloid precursor protein and one homologue of the β-site APP cleaving enzyme, BACE2. Processing of the amyloid precursor protein by β-secretase (BACE) is the rate-limiting step in the production of the pathogenic Aβ peptide. Increased amounts of APP in the DS brain result in increased amounts of Aβ and extracellular plaque formation beginning early in life. BACE dysregulation potentially represents an overlapping biological mechanism with sporadic AD …

Keratin 8/18 Filaments: Potential Modulators Of Death Signaling In Ovarian Granulosa Cells, Sarah E. Kinsman Jan 2012

Keratin 8/18 Filaments: Potential Modulators Of Death Signaling In Ovarian Granulosa Cells, Sarah E. Kinsman

Master's Theses and Capstones

Granulosa cell apoptosis is associated with follicular atresia; but the cellular mechanisms that drive this process, especially its cell specificity, are relatively unknown. Here, we determined that cultured granulosa cells abundantly express K8/K18 filaments and inhibition of protein synthesis enhances Fas-induced apoptosis. In this context, the roles of cFLIP, ERK1/2 and Akt are minimal but conversely, K8/K18 filaments have a prominent role in granulosa cell resistance to Fas-induced apoptosis. Keratin 8/18 filaments in granulosa cells provide a plausible mechanism to avoid Fas-induced apoptosis and this mechanism potentially involves the synthesis of labile proteins. The existence of K8/K18 filaments in granulosa …

The Influence Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors On Two Nudibranchs Feeding Upon Membranipora Membranacea In The Southern Gulf Of Maine, Megan I. Mcculler Jan 2012

The Influence Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors On Two Nudibranchs Feeding Upon Membranipora Membranacea In The Southern Gulf Of Maine, Megan I. Mcculler

Master's Theses and Capstones

The abiotic (temperature and flow rate) and biotic factors within fouling communities at three marinas located along the southern Gulf of Maine from June to December in 2010 and 2011 were surveyed. The goal of this study was to determine what is driving the recent population increase of the nudibranch, Corambe obscura, and whether the native nudibranch, Onchidoris muricata, is transitioning prey species. In addition, the affects of temperature on aspects of C. obscura's life history were determined by laboratory experiments.

Results suggest that abiotic factors influence basic community members such as the kelp host, Saccharina latissima, and the invasive …

Throughfall Chemistry In Deciduous And Coniferous Forest Stands At Thompson Farm, New Hampshire, Musa Dinc

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this study, I compare the chemical composition of throughfall in deciduous and coniferous forest stands to the chemistry of wet deposition. The study was conducted at Thompson Farm, Durham NH, which is owned and managed by the University of New Hampshire. Thompson Farm (43.11N, 70.95W) is at an altitude of 23 m and about 24 km from the Gulf of Maine. Throughfall samples were obtained from two forest stands using wet-dry Aerochem Metrics 301 collectors and rainfall samples were collected in a wet-only precipitation collector (N-CON Atmospheric Deposition Samples Model 00-120) from 14 April 2009 to 14 November 2009.The …

Visualizing Magnitude And Direction In Flow Fields, David Hf Pilar Jan 2012

Visualizing Magnitude And Direction In Flow Fields, David Hf Pilar

Master's Theses and Capstones

In weather visualizations, it is common to see vector data represented by glyphs placed on grids. The glyphs either do not encode magnitude in readable steps, or have designs that interfere with the data. The grids form strong but irrelevant patterns. Directional, quantitative glyphs bent along streamlines are more effective for visualizing flow patterns.

With the goal of improving the perception of flow patterns in weather forecasts, we designed and evaluated two variations on a glyph commonly used to encode wind speed and direction in weather visualizations. We tested the ability of subjects to determine wind direction and speed: the …

Through The Autobiographies And Into The Art: A Deeper Look Into Women Of The 1920s, Kelsey M. Hoyt

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The 1920s in America reflected a time of change ranging from prohibition to the iconic Flapper girl lifestyle. Famous public figures tended to transform their ideals to the rapidly changing societal standards. Fortunately, for many artists, their lives encompassed the ideals that were established in the 1920s. Thus, the production of art simply became a reproduction of past experiences and lifetime events that the artist encountered. Seemingly obsessed with drugs, alcohol, and sex, artists fell into lives consumed with addictive and psychotic behaviors. The public eye saw these artists as victims of tragic lives and searched for any psychoanalytic meaning …

Analysis Of Bisphenol A (Bpa) In Local Waters And In Pvc Pond Liner, Brandon Bills Jan 2012

Analysis Of Bisphenol A (Bpa) In Local Waters And In Pvc Pond Liner, Brandon Bills

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Concentrations of the endocrine disrupter bisphenol A (BPA) were determined for three water samples from the watershed of Charleston, IL, USA. The analytical approach employed solid phase extraction in conjunction with GC/MS-SIM analysis and yielded a limit of detection of 30 ppt (parts per trillion). The local waterways Town Branch. Cassel Creek and Embarras River showed concentrations of 58(11) ppt, 89(3) ppt, and 32(9) ppt respectively. Additional measurements of BPA availability from aqueous laboratory extractions of a commercial PVC pond liner have been initiated. Preliminary results indicate significant BPA release from the pond liner, dependent upon extraction conditions.

Treatment Of Written Discourse After Traumatic Brain Injury, Cassie L. Fuller Jan 2012

Treatment Of Written Discourse After Traumatic Brain Injury, Cassie L. Fuller

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Traumatic brain injury often leads to cognitive communication disorders, commonly disorders of written discourse. Research in the field of written discourse after traumatic brain injury does not provide a strong protocol for improvement of functional written skills. The aim of this study was to create an effective treatment plan to address written discourse impairments in two college students from Eastern Illinois University with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Individualized treatment plans were developed for participants based on the need for improvement in productivity, efficiency, and coherence (both global and local) in written discourse. Treatment was developed based on individual needs and …

A Case Study Of The Baldock Restoration Project, Andrée Tremoulet, Ellen M. Bassett

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the 1980s, homelessness has become an increasingly visible and seemingly intransigent part of American society. It affects not only those who experience it directly, as a condition in their own lives, but also a broad spectrum of interests that deal with its effects. One such interest is owners and managers of public land, where homeless individuals commonly seek refuge, sometimes forming communities. Although their business may be transportation, natural resources management, recreation or some other public service, managers of public land are called upon to deal with this complex environmental, legal and human problem. This is a case study …

Survival Analysis Of Dialysis Patients Under Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches, Maryam Siddiqa, Mueen -Ud -Din Azad, Muhammad K. Pervaiz, Muhammad Ghias, Gulzar H. Shah, Uzma Hafeez

Health Policy & Management: Faculty Publications (2006-2018)

Dialysis is a recommended way of treatment for end stage kidney diseases and it provides a life saving procedure. Transplantation can also be useful source but it is restricted by financial limitations especially in developing countries like Pakistan. Censoring is an important part of the survival data which causes insensitivity to the usual procedures of analysis. A little work has been done in literature regarding the estimated survival time of dialysis patients in Pakistan. So, this study has estimated the median survival time of male/females patients separately by parametric and non-parametric approaches. Moreover, comparison of survival time to patients (50 …

Music Therapy Within The Context Of Psychotherapeutic Models, Mary Scovel, Susan Gardstrom Jan 2012

Music Therapy Within The Context Of Psychotherapeutic Models, Mary Scovel, Susan Gardstrom

Department of Music Faculty Publications

Music therapy clinical practice occurs at various levels. Wheeler (1983) has classified the treatment of adults with mental disorders into three types: music therapy as an activity therapy; insight music therapy with re-educative goals; and insight music therapy with reconstructive goals.

Activity-based therapy is aimed at helping the client reach observable, measurable goals through various forms of music experiences. In contrast, the two remaining levels focus on facilitation of change through personal insight gained via musical experiences and verbalization about those experiences. Insight-based music therapy processes are ordinarily more intense and prolonged, in that deep emotions are evoked, and in …

Ecological Causes Of Life History Variation Tested By Meta-Analysis, Comparison, And Experimental Approaches, Daniel Croft Barton Jan 2012

Ecological Causes Of Life History Variation Tested By Meta-Analysis, Comparison, And Experimental Approaches, Daniel Croft Barton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The ecological causes of life history variation among taxa and the arrangement of such variation along geographic gradients is enigmatic despite the proximity of life history traits to fitness and implications for understanding basic and applied population ecology. One classic explanation for the arrangement of avian life histories along a `slow-fast' gradient, where species at low latitudes have `slow' life history traits (low fecundity and mortality) and species at high latitudes have `fast' life history traits (high fecundity and mortality), is the increase in seasonality of resources with increasing latitude (Ashmole's hypothesis). Despite broad acceptance, this hypothesis has been supported …
