On The Occurrence Of Ascorhynchus Castelli (Dohrn, 1881) (Arthropoda: Pycnogonida) In The Aegean Sea, Cengi̇z Koçak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Sampling studies in the Turkish Aegean Sea revealed the occurrence of a sea spider species, Ascorhynchus castelli (Dohrn, 1881). The presence of this species is reported for the first time from the Aegean Sea and the second time from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. This record further extends the known distribution of the species from the Turkish Mediterranean Sea to the Aegean Sea in the eastern Mediterranean. This is also the first record of the species from shallow waters in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (10 m).

Neuroscience And The Child Welfare System, Clare Huntington Jan 2012

Neuroscience And The Child Welfare System, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

A growing body of research by neuroscientists demonstrates that a child’s early life experiences and environment literally shape the child’s brain architecture, with lifelong consequences that are very difficult to reverse. Children’s relationships with their primary caregivers are at the core of this brain development, but when this relationship is severely deficient, the developing child’s brain is deeply affected. This research has not gained sufficient recognition in policy debates about the child welfare system because much of the work is complex and hard for non-neuroscientists to decipher with nuance. This essay brings a family law scholar’s perspective to understanding the …

Copyright Law And Pornography, Ann Bartow Jan 2012

Copyright Law And Pornography, Ann Bartow

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Sex-for-hire is usually illegal, unless it is being filmed. Debates about pornography tread uneasily into legal terrain that implicates freedom of expression under the First Amendment, the specter of censorship, and genuine concerns about the function and role of pornography in persistent gender inequality. It is less common for conversations about pornography to include a discussion of copyright law. Yet copyright law is a powerful tool that operates to protect the financial interests of pornographers. Owners of copyrighted pornography frequently threaten public exposure of an alleged infringer’s consumption habits in order to force a financial settlement. Thus copyright law operates …

Imagining A Right To Housing, Lying In The Interstices, Shelby D. Green Jan 2012

Imagining A Right To Housing, Lying In The Interstices, Shelby D. Green

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article explores whether the philosophical and constitutional predicates for the recognition of a right to housing exist in some form in our nation’s jurisprudence and political order. Part II traces the evolution of the concept of “rights” from that embraced by the country’s founders to the present, how such a right to housing would fit within the dialogue of property rights, the notion of ownership, and the interest in liberty. Part III discusses the historical role of the court in protecting housing. Part IV discusses the notion of protecting rights to housing under existing equal protection and due process …

Beyond War: Bin Laden, Escobar, And The Justification Of Targeted Killing, Luis E. Chiesa, Alexander K.A. Greenawalt Jan 2012

Beyond War: Bin Laden, Escobar, And The Justification Of Targeted Killing, Luis E. Chiesa, Alexander K.A. Greenawalt

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Using the May 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden as a case study, this Article contributes to the debate on targeted killing in two distinct ways, each of which has the result of downplaying the centrality of international humanitarian law (IHL) as the decisive source of justification for targeted killings.

First, we argue that the IHL rules governing the killing of combatants in wartime should be understood to apply more strictly in cases involving the targeting of single individuals, particularly when the targeting occurs against nonparadigmatic combatants outside the traditional battlefield. As applied to the bin Laden killing, we argue …

The South Of The North: Building On On Critical Approaches To International Law With Lessons From The Fourth World, Amar Bhatia

Articles & Book Chapters

As both practice and discipline, international law has been the subject of serious and sustained internal and external critiques since its inception. In fact, the "inception" of international law itself has been the subject of serious and sustained critique for some time now. This debate is of special relevance for Indigenous peoples, most of whom suffer from a double burden in international law, as they are neither Europeans nor dominant political actors within the states whose borders now contain and divide their traditional territories. Apart from the changing role, place, and agency of Indigenous peoples in international law and fora …

Lolcats And Celebrities And (Red Panda) Bears – Oh, My!, Mary T. Moser Jan 2012

Lolcats And Celebrities And (Red Panda) Bears – Oh, My!, Mary T. Moser

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

Getting - and keeping - students' attention during library instruction sessions is an increasingly Herculean task. We all know the best practices for teaching: be engaging, ask questions, provide opportunities for active learning. But what if those techniques just aren't enough? By experimenting wildly with the presentation of my library instruction sessions, I have found that a lot of teaching power lies within the unexpected. Often, topics with very little direct correlation to libraries make interesting and engaging platforms for teaching information literacy concepts. Some of the add-ons I have used in classes include: slideshows of LOLcat pictures to impart …

Experimental Simulation Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (Hiapp)-Pancreatic Beta Cell Membrane Interactions: Inferences And Implications In The Etiopathogenesis Of Diabetes Mellitus Type Ii, Sarika Pamarthy Jan 2012

Experimental Simulation Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (Hiapp)-Pancreatic Beta Cell Membrane Interactions: Inferences And Implications In The Etiopathogenesis Of Diabetes Mellitus Type Ii, Sarika Pamarthy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Pancreatic beta cells secrete insulin, an endocrine hormone that regulates blood glucose levels and maintains normal physiological activity in humans and animals. Diabetes mellitus type II is a consequence of the gradual destruction of these important cells, likely by human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) that is co-secreted with insulin. Increasing health care costs, coupled with the World Health Organization’s prediction of a worldwide diabetic epidemic by year 2030, make experimental diabetes research a crucial prologue to future clinical trials in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Diabetes mellitus type II. Our experimental set-up simulates hIAPP peptide fragment and pancreatic beta cell …

Effects Of Deafness On Acoustic Characteristics Of American English Tense/Lax Vowels In Maternal Speech To Infants, Maria V. Kondauroava, Tonya R. Bergeson Jan 2012

Effects Of Deafness On Acoustic Characteristics Of American English Tense/Lax Vowels In Maternal Speech To Infants, Maria V. Kondauroava, Tonya R. Bergeson

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Recent studies have demonstrated that mothers exaggerate phonetic properties of infant-directed (ID) speech. However, these studies focused on a single acoustic dimension (frequency), whereas speech sounds are composed of multiple acoustic cues. Moreover, little is known about how mothers adjust phonetic properties of speech to children with hearing loss. This study examined mothers’ production of frequency and duration cues to the American English tense/lax vowel contrast in speech to profoundly deaf (N = 14) and normal-hearing (N = 14) infants, and to an adult experimenter. First and second formant frequencies and vowel duration of tense (/i/, /u/) and lax (/I/, …

Oklahoma And Beyond: Understanding The Wave Of State Anti-Transnational Law Initiatives, Martha F. Davis, Johanna Kalb Jan 2012

Oklahoma And Beyond: Understanding The Wave Of State Anti-Transnational Law Initiatives, Martha F. Davis, Johanna Kalb

Indiana Law Journal

In the past year, initiatives to block judicial consideration of foreign or international law have been introduced in over half of the states. The proposals vary, ranging from the “softer” versions, which codify existing common law principles governing judicial decision making to the more extreme versions, which aggressively bar all consideration of foreign and international law, virtually eliminating judicial discretion regarding the relevance of such law in a particular case. This Essay contends that in all their variations, these anti-transnational law measures pose serious and fundamental challenges to the American judicial system. They undermine our federalist system by ignoring federal …

Cationic Amphiphilic Drug-Induced Autophagosome Accumulation Is Due To Autophagosome Sequestration Within Vimentin Intermediate Filament Networks Resulting In Prolonged Autophagosome Half-Life, Miriam Devorah Kleinman Jan 2012

Cationic Amphiphilic Drug-Induced Autophagosome Accumulation Is Due To Autophagosome Sequestration Within Vimentin Intermediate Filament Networks Resulting In Prolonged Autophagosome Half-Life, Miriam Devorah Kleinman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Accumulations of autophagosomes and non-esterified cholesterol are

observed in several cell lines derived from lysosomal storage diseases,

including Niemann Pick Type C (NPC). The relationship between

autophagosome accumulation and lysosomal non-esterified cholesterol is

unclear. Exposure of murine hepatoma 1c1c7 cultures to the cationic

amphiphilic drugs (CADs) U18666A, imipramine and clozapine caused

lysosomal non-esterified cholesterol and autophagosome accumulation.

Measurement of LC3-II conversion in the presence of lysosomal inhibitors

bafilomycin A1 and NH4Cl, degradation of long-lived proteins, and

colocalization of GFP-LC3 and LAMP1 indicated an increase in

autophagosome synthesis without compensatory increase in clearance.

Autophagosome synthesis was blocked using 3-MA to monitor …

Intervention Of Non-Small Cell Line Cancer Oncogenic Pathways With Delta-Tocotrienol, Xiangming Ji Jan 2012

Intervention Of Non-Small Cell Line Cancer Oncogenic Pathways With Delta-Tocotrienol, Xiangming Ji

Wayne State University Dissertations

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is most hostile and leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Clinical data has demonstrated that 30 % of NSCLC patients have increased Notch activity and 10% of NSCLC have gain-of-function mutation on Notch-1 gene. Our data demonstrated that delta-tocotrienol could inhibit NSCLC cells proliferation, invasion and induce apoptosis by down-regulation of the Notch-1 signaling pathway. Using microRNA microarray and microRNA transfection, our findings further suggest that delta-tocotrienol is a non-toxic activator of miR-34a which can inhibit NSCLC cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and inhibit invasion. Last but not the least, We observed that …

Mrna Granules And Ischemic Preconditioning, Michelle Rei Smith Jan 2012

Mrna Granules And Ischemic Preconditioning, Michelle Rei Smith

Wayne State University Theses

Brain ischemia and reperfusion that occurs after stroke and cardiac arrest, causes translation arrest (TA) in neurons which is irreversible in neurons that will undergo delayed neuronal death. TA is linked to mRNA granules, which are involved in ischemia-induced stress genes translation. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is the most protective response known that protects neurons from a lethal ischemic insult. In this thesis I studied the effects of (1) sublethal durations of ischemia, (2) IPC and (3) cycloheximide (CHX) on the formation of mRNA granules at 1 hour of reperfusion and the colocalization of HuR in the mRNA granules. All durations …
