A Comparative Linguistic Study Between Sicilian And Spanish (Estudio Lingüístico-Comparativo Del Siciliano Y El Español), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez, Raven Chakerian Jan 2012

A Comparative Linguistic Study Between Sicilian And Spanish (Estudio Lingüístico-Comparativo Del Siciliano Y El Español), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez, Raven Chakerian

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study proposes a linguistic-comparative analysis of both Spanish and Sicilian. While numerous linguistic studies have been done on Romantic languages, very few deal with Sicilian, isolated as a dialect of Italian. According to some linguists, Sicilian, as well as Sardinian (spoken in Sardinia), is not a dialect but an independent language per se. It lost its language status when the Italian parliament decided to assign a national language. This research, independently of Sicilian being a language or a dialect, analyses the most important phonetic, lexical, spelling and morphological differences with his sister-language, Spanish. At the same time, some parallelisms …

Brewery spent grain (BSG) which was used as the main organic material in this research is the by-product of brewing industries. Every 100 liter of beer generates 20kg of BSG. A Malaysian brewery (Carlsberg (M) Sdn. Bhd) alone generates 31,000 tonnes of BSG yearly. Almost all the BSG are being dumped into landfills, since there is no proper and separate guideline for industrial organic waste management in Malaysia. BSG materials are rich in nutrients and high in fermentable sugar as well as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Dumping this high nutritional substrate into the landfills could contribute to adverse environmental impacts, …

Live From New York, It's The Fake News! Saturday Night Live And The (Non)Politics Of Parody, Amber Day, Ethan Thompson

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

Though Saturday Night Live's “Weekend Update” has become one of the most iconic of fake news programs, it is remarkably unfocused on either satiric critique or parody of particular news conventions. Instead, the segment has been shaped by a series of hosts who made a name for themselves by developing distinctive comic personalities. In contrast to more politically invested contemporary programs, the genre of fake news on Saturday Night Live has been largely emptied to serve the needs of the larger show, maintaining its status as just topical, hip, and unthreatening enough to attract celebrities and politicians, as well …

Pryor Mountain Mustangs: On The Range Or On The Bring?, Monica Gokey Jan 2012

Pryor Mountain Mustangs: On The Range Or On The Bring?, Monica Gokey

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

At the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range straddling the Montana-Wyoming border, the fate of a herd of mustangs rests with the Bureau of Land Management and local horse conservationists. Nationally, the two sides are generally pitted against each other in the ugly world of horse politics. But in the Pryors, advocates and government have forged a tenuous partnership. Both sides want to see healthy horses on healthy range. And there could hardly be a better herd to benefit from such a truce. The Pryor Mountain mustangs have a unique genetic heritage at stake. The horses are some of the last …

The Ecology Of Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever In Western North America, Tammi Lynne Johnson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In North America the primary cause of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is the spirochete Borrelia hermsii that is vectored by the tick Ornithodoros hermsi. Ecological investigations were combined with mathematical modeling and genetics to gain a clearer understanding of the interactions and mechanisms responsible for disease maintenance, distribution, and genetic diversity. The objectives of this research were to: 1) identify mammals associated with B. hermsii and O. hermsi by determining active infection and antibody presence, 2) develop a deterministic model to ascertain ecological and epidemiological parameters essential for disease persistence, 3) resolve the phylogeographic structure of B. hermsii and …

The Effect Of Spillover Onto Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors At The Schaffer-Ca1 Synapse In Hippocampal Slice, Katie Marie Hoffman Jan 2012

The Effect Of Spillover Onto Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors At The Schaffer-Ca1 Synapse In Hippocampal Slice, Katie Marie Hoffman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and is crucial for processes such as learning and memory. Due its importance as a signaling molecule, the extracellular glutamate concentration is tightly regulated, largely by the excitatory amino-acid transporters (EAATs). In these studies, we investigated the role of EAAT1-3 in synaptic transmission at the Schaffer-CA1 synapse in acute hippocampal brain slices. My results demonstrated that transport block by L-TBA resulted in glutamate spillover and activation of NMDARs. Further investigation showed that L-TBA-mediated activation of NMDARs was facilitated by the Mg2+ unblock of the receptor. Furthermore our data indicate that NMDAR …

Electric Field Exposure Triggers And Guides Formation Of Pseudopod-Like Blebs In U937 Monocytes, Mikhail A. Rassokhin, Andrei G. Pakhomov Jan 2012

Electric Field Exposure Triggers And Guides Formation Of Pseudopod-Like Blebs In U937 Monocytes, Mikhail A. Rassokhin, Andrei G. Pakhomov

Bioelectrics Publications

We describe a new phenomenon of anodotropic pseudopod-like blebbing in U937 cells stimulated by nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF). In contrast to "regular," round-shaped blebs, which are often seen in response to cell damage, pseudopod-like blebs (PLBs) formed as longitudinal membrane protrusions toward anode. PLB length could exceed the cell diameter in 2 min of exposure to 60-ns, 10-kV/cm pulses delivered at 10-20 Hz. Both PLBs and round-shaped nsPEF-induced blebs could be efficiently inhibited by partial isosmotic replacement of bath NaCl for a larger solute (sucrose), thereby pointing to the colloid-osmotic water uptake as the principal driving force for bleb …

The Use Of An In Vitro 3d Melanoma Model To Predict In Vivo Plasmid Transfection Using Electroporation, Benadette Marrero, Richard Heller Jan 2012

The Use Of An In Vitro 3d Melanoma Model To Predict In Vivo Plasmid Transfection Using Electroporation, Benadette Marrero, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

A large-scale in vitro 3D tumor model was generated to evaluate gene delivery procedures in vivo. This 3D tumor model consists of a "tissue-like" spheroid that provides a micro-environment supportive of melanoma proliferation, allowing cells to behave similarly to cells in vivo. This functional spheroid measures approximately 1 cm in diameter and can be used to effectively evaluate plasmid transfection when testing various electroporation (EP) electrode applicators. In this study, we identified EP conditions that efficiently transfect green fluorescent protein (GFP) and interleukin 15 (IL-15) plasmids into tumor cells residing in the 3D construct. We found that plasmids …

Section 7 Of The Charter And The Principled Assignment Of Legislative Jurisdiction, Alana Klein Jan 2012

Section 7 Of The Charter And The Principled Assignment Of Legislative Jurisdiction, Alana Klein

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper argues that in deciding whether state action is arbitrary, overbroad or disproportionate, contrary to section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, courts should look beyond the relationship between the means and ends of state action and toward broader considerations about the democratic context in which such action occurs. The case of Canada (Attorney General) v. PHS Community Services Society is taken as the paper’s starting point. The re, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the federal Minister of Health’s decision to deny Insite — a provincially supported safe injection site — an exemption from drug …

Assessing The Impact Of The Ancillary Powers Doctrine On Three Decades Of Charter Jurisprudence, Vanessa Macdonnell

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper seeks to better understand the factors that may have led the Supreme Court of Canada to assume a role in articulating new police powers since the advent of the Charter in 1982. It also attempts to situate the Court’s ancillary powers cases within the context of a larger jurisprudential trend of balancing individual rights against “societal interests” outside of section 1 that has emerged in the Charter case law. The paper suggests that courts may be disposed to create new common law police powers because in some cases, the police have infringed the Charter rights of suspects in …
