Civic Culture: Public Opinion And The Resurgence Of Civic Culture, Yuri Levada Jan 2012

Civic Culture: Public Opinion And The Resurgence Of Civic Culture, Yuri Levada

Russian Culture

There has hardly been a stretch in Russian history more saturated with sweeping changes than the period between 1988-1993. Packed into this exceedingly brief historical era are the rise of "perestroika" and the fall of its illustrious leader, Mikhail Gorbachev; the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence in its place of 15 independent states; the August '91 communist putsch and the democrats' triumphant ascension to power; the proliferation of virulent ethnic conflicts and the recognition of the abiding need for cooperation; the bloody October '93 confrontation between the executive and legislative powers and the surprising strength that the …

Topological Theory In Bioconstructivism, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2012

Topological Theory In Bioconstructivism, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In the essay “Landscapes of Change: Boccioni’s Stati d’animo as a General Theory of Models,” in Assemblage 19, 1992, Sanford Kwinter proposed a number of theoretical models which could be applied to computer-generated forms in Bioconstructivism. These included topological theory, epigenesis, the epigenetic landscape, morphogenesis, catastrophe and catastrophe theory. Topological theory entails transformational events or deformations in nature which introduce discontinuities into the evolution of a system. Epigenesis entails the generation of smooth landscapes, in waves or the surface of the earth, for example, formed by complex underlying topological interactions. The epigenetic landscape is the smooth forms of relief which …

Interferon-Α Regulates Glutaminase 1 Promoter Through Stat1 Phosphorylation: Relevance To Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders., Lixia Zhao, Yunlong Huang, Changhai Tian, Lynn Taylor, Norman Curthoys, Yi Wang, Hamilton Vernon, Jialin C. Zheng Jan 2012

Interferon-Α Regulates Glutaminase 1 Promoter Through Stat1 Phosphorylation: Relevance To Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders., Lixia Zhao, Yunlong Huang, Changhai Tian, Lynn Taylor, Norman Curthoys, Yi Wang, Hamilton Vernon, Jialin C. Zheng

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) develop during progressive HIV-1 infection and affect up to 50% of infected individuals. Activated microglia and macrophages are critical cell populations that are involved in the pathogenesis of HAND, which is specifically related to the production and release of various soluble neurotoxic factors including glutamate. In the central nervous system (CNS), glutamate is typically derived from glutamine by mitochondrial enzyme glutaminase. Our previous study has shown that glutaminase is upregulated in HIV-1 infected monocyte-derived-macrophages (MDM) and microglia. However, how HIV-1 leads to glutaminase upregulation, or how glutaminase expression is regulated in general, remains unclear. In …

Activation Of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Protein Kinase 5 Is Essential For Cystitis- And Nerve Growth Factor-Induced Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Expression In Sensory Neurons, Sharon Yu, Chun-Mei Xia, Li-Ya Qiao Jan 2012

Activation Of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Protein Kinase 5 Is Essential For Cystitis- And Nerve Growth Factor-Induced Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Expression In Sensory Neurons, Sharon Yu, Chun-Mei Xia, Li-Ya Qiao

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Background Cystitis causes considerable neuronal plasticity in the primary afferent pathways. The molecular mechanism and signal transduction underlying cross talk between the inflamed urinary bladder and sensory sensitization has not been investigated.

Results In a rat cystitis model induced by cyclophosphamide (CYP) for 48 h, the mRNA and protein levels of the excitatory neurotransmitter calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are increased in the L6 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in response to bladder inflammation. Cystitis-induced CGRP expression in L6 DRG is triggered by endogenous nerve growth factor (NGF) because neutralization of NGF with a specific NGF antibody reverses CGRP up-regulation during cystitis. …

Mekk1-Mkk4-Jnk-Ap1 Pathway Negatively Regulates Rgs4 Expression In Colonic Smooth Muscle Cells, Yonggang Zhang, Fang Li, Shu Liu, Hong Wang, Sunila Mahavadi, Karnam S. Murthy, Kamel Khalili, Wenhui Hu Jan 2012

Mekk1-Mkk4-Jnk-Ap1 Pathway Negatively Regulates Rgs4 Expression In Colonic Smooth Muscle Cells, Yonggang Zhang, Fang Li, Shu Liu, Hong Wang, Sunila Mahavadi, Karnam S. Murthy, Kamel Khalili, Wenhui Hu

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Background

Regulator of G-protein Signaling 4 (RGS4) plays an important role in regulating smooth muscle contraction, cardiac development, neural plasticity and psychiatric disorder. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Our recent studies have shown that upregulation of Rgs4 by interleukin (IL)-1β is mediated by the activation of NFκB signaling and modulated by extracellular signal-regulated kinases, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and phosphoinositide-3 kinase. Here we investigate the effect of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway on Rgs4 expression in rabbit colonic smooth muscle cells.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Cultured cells at first passage were treated with or without IL-1β …

Up-Regulation Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Primary Afferent Pathway Regulates Colon-To-Bladder Cross-Sensitization In Rat, Chun-Mei Xia, Melisa A. Gulick, Sharon Yu, John R. Grider, Karnam S. Murthy, John K. Kuemmerle, Hamid I. Akbarali Jan 2012

Up-Regulation Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Primary Afferent Pathway Regulates Colon-To-Bladder Cross-Sensitization In Rat, Chun-Mei Xia, Melisa A. Gulick, Sharon Yu, John R. Grider, Karnam S. Murthy, John K. Kuemmerle, Hamid I. Akbarali

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Background In humans, inflammation of either the urinary bladder or the distal colon often results in sensory cross-sensitization between these organs. Limited information is known about the mechanisms underlying this clinical syndrome. Studies with animal models have demonstrated that activation of primary afferent pathways may have a role in mediating viscero-visceral cross-organ sensitization.

Methods Colonic inflammation was induced by a single dose of tri-nitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) instilled intracolonically. The histology of the colon and the urinary bladder was examined by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain. The protein expression of transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channel of the vanilloid type …

Suggestive Characters: Hypnotism And Subjectivity In Blanca De Los Ríos’S Las Hijas De Don Juan (1907), Ryan A. Davis

Decimonónica

In July of 1906, Blanco y negro published a brief story by Blanca de los Ríos entitled “Metempsicosis: De las ‘memorias’ del doctor Hipnos,” which dramatizes the ominous dangers of hypnotism.1 In the story, a medical student, driven by his obsession for Susana, pays a traveling hypnotizer to “infundir mi alma en [el] cuerpo [de Alberto de San Andrés],” Susana’s husband (“Metempsicosis” 51). His subsequent confession to Susana about his actions precipitates her death, which in turn causes the student to go insane. In the final lines of the story, Hipnos reflects on the tragic outcome and the perils …

De Noches, Tempestades Y Olas: La Experiencia De Lo Sublime En E. Echeverría, J. M. Heredia Y J. E. Caro, María Elena Campero

“After The Apple”: Female Sexuality In The Writings Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Susan Walter Jan 2012

“After The Apple”: Female Sexuality In The Writings Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Susan Walter

Decimonónica

The Biblical story of creation in which Adam and Eve are deceived by the serpent is recognized widely as one of the foundational stories of Western culture. The story’s importance is asserted by many scholars, including Elaine Pagels in her groundbreaking study Adam, Eve and the Serpent: “[T]he biblical creation story, like the creation stories of other cultures, communicates social and religious values and presents them as if they were universally valid” (xx). In this same study Pagels suggests that Christians have interpreted the story of “Genesis” in various ways over the centuries, finding in it important teachings about …

Andalusia’S Cultural Spirit And The Historical Ballads Of Romancero Gitano, Nelson Orringer Jan 2012

Andalusia’S Cultural Spirit And The Historical Ballads Of Romancero Gitano, Nelson Orringer

Decimonónica

Though praised by its author for its unity, Lorca’s Romancero gitano seemingly ends in disarray (Obras 3: 339).1 The final three ballads appear arbitrarily grouped under the rubric, Romances históricos. First, Martirio de Santa Olalla embellishes the martyrdom of fourth-century Saint Eulalia in Roman-ruled Mérida; next, Burla de Don Pedro a caballo parodies the cycle of fourteenth-century Pedro the Cruel; finally, Thamar y Amnón lyrically revisits the incest of 2 Samuel 13: 1. What unites the three, other than remote temporal settings, and what makes them historical ballads? C. Marcilly unconvincingly interprets the Don Pedro ballad as …

Co-Cultures Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Roseobacter Denitrificans Reveal Shifts In Gene Expression Levels Compared To Solo Cultures, Crystal A. Conway, Nwadiuto Esiobu, Jose V. Lopez

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Consistent biosynthesis of desired secondary metabolites (SMs) from pure microbial cultures is often unreliable. In a proof-ofprinciple study to induce SM gene expression and production, we describe mixed “co-culturing” conditions and monitoring of messages via quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Gene expression of model bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and Roseobacter denitrificans Och114) was analyzed in pure solo and mixed cocultures to infer the effects of interspecies interactions on gene expression in vitro, Two P. aeruginosa genes (PhzH coding for portions of the phenazine antibiotic pathway leading to pyocyanin (PCN) and the RhdA gene for thiosulfate: cyanide sulfurtransferase …

A Secondary Science Teacher’S Beliefs About Environmental Education And Its Relationship With The Classroom Practices, Salima Begum Jan 2012

A Secondary Science Teacher’S Beliefs About Environmental Education And Its Relationship With The Classroom Practices, Salima Begum

Professional Development Centre, Gilgit

Global environmental issues are increasing due to the rapid developments in science and technology. To address these environmental issues there is a need to create awareness about environmental education among the masses. This can only be possible through teachers and teacher educators. It is assumed that science teachers are teaching environmental concepts as scientific facts, without creating awareness about environmental education. The ultimate purpose of this study was to explore the beliefs of a secondary science teacher about environmental education and how his stated beliefs matched with his classroom practices. The study was conducted in one of the co-operative schools …

Delaware Dissolves The Glue Of Capitalism: Exonerating From Claims Of Incompetence Those Who Manage Other People's Money, Daniel S. Kleinberger Jan 2012

Delaware Dissolves The Glue Of Capitalism: Exonerating From Claims Of Incompetence Those Who Manage Other People's Money, Daniel S. Kleinberger

Faculty Scholarship

Delaware law is the leading source of non-federal law governing U.S. business organizations. Over the past 25 years that law has tilted further and further toward insulating individuals who manage business firms from any liability to the firms’ owners based on claims of misconduct. These developments have occurred both in corporate law and the law of unincorporated organizations.

Although often described as consistent with market principles, these developments actually undercut the proper functioning of a market system. Effective competition among firms does not require a “dog eat dog” mentality within firms. Managerial responsibility is a prerequisite to healthy firms, which …
