Nitrogen Fertility In Semiarid Dryland Wheat Production Is Challenging For Beginning Organic Farmers, Drew J. Lyon, Gary W. Hergert Jan 2012

Nitrogen Fertility In Semiarid Dryland Wheat Production Is Challenging For Beginning Organic Farmers, Drew J. Lyon, Gary W. Hergert

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Organic farming systems use green and animal manures to supply nitrogen (N) to their fields for crop production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of green manure and composted cattle manure on the subsequent winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop in a semiarid environment. Dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) was seeded in early April and terminated at first flower in late June. Composted cattle manure was applied at 0, 11.2 or 22.5Mgha−1 just prior to pea termination. Winter wheat was planted in mid September following the green manure or tilled summer fallow. No …

Research Achievements And Adoption Of No-Till, Dryland Cropping In The Semi-Arid U.S. Great Plains, Neil C. Hansen, Brett L. Allen, R. Louis Baumhardt, Drew J. Lyon Jan 2012

Research Achievements And Adoption Of No-Till, Dryland Cropping In The Semi-Arid U.S. Great Plains, Neil C. Hansen, Brett L. Allen, R. Louis Baumhardt, Drew J. Lyon

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

The Great Plains region of the United States is an area of widespread dryland crop production, with wheat being the dominant crop. Precipitation in the region ranges from 300 to 500 mm annually, with the majority of precipitation falling during hot summer months. The prevailing cropping system is a two-year rotation of wheat and summer fallow. The adoption of no-till practices has resulted in greater precipitation storage and use efficiency, which has led to greater cropping intensity, higher productivity, more diverse crop rotations, and improvements in soil properties. In Colorado, for example, a no-till rotation of winter wheat–maize–fallow increased total …

My Dog Is Better Than Yours An Examination Of The Pain Attenuating Properties Associated With Exposure To A Familiar Dog, An Unfamiliar Dog, And A Plant, Emma Jane Ballantine Jan 2012

My Dog Is Better Than Yours An Examination Of The Pain Attenuating Properties Associated With Exposure To A Familiar Dog, An Unfamiliar Dog, And A Plant, Emma Jane Ballantine

Theses & ETDs

Exposure to companion animals has been associated with reduced physiological reactivity, reduced pain and improved affect. Some have suggested these effects may be due to the Biophilia hypothesis, which states that people receive a therapeutic benefit from exposure to nature, while others have argued that these effects are an effect of attachment. The current study compared the reduction in pain experienced by participants during exposure to photographs of a familiar dog, an unfamiliar dog, a plant and a neutral stimulus (chair), through the use of a 3(Condition: familiar dog, unfamiliar dog, plant) x 2(Trial: chair, experimental) design, in an attempt …

The Allure Of Animals, Terrell A. Young, Barbara A. Ward

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Books that feature animals seem to have an almost universal appeal for young readers. Whether they are domesticated creatures such as cats and dogs that are part of many families’ lives or animals in their natural habitats in the wild, there is simply something intriguing or endearing about their behavior and personalities. A few years ago, young readers couldn’t get enough of the story of a friendship that sprang up between a 130-year-old Alhambra tortoise in Kenya and a baby hippo, marooned after the 2004 tsunami in Asia. Readers of all ages reacted powerfully to their story, told by a …

Revitalizing Tier 2 Intervention With Graphic Novels, Linda Smetana, Dana L. Grisham Jan 2012

Revitalizing Tier 2 Intervention With Graphic Novels, Linda Smetana, Dana L. Grisham

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The authors explore the practice of incorporating graphic novels in a Tier 2 Response To Intervention (RTI) program for five elementary-aged struggling readers in an urban school. Using a formative experiment framework, the study found that graphic novels provided a vehicle for the application of word recognition and fluency strategies learned in the RTI intervention program. In addition, graphic novels were used to develop students’ vocabulary and comprehension skills and resulted in increased progress for students’ fluency as measured by DIBELS. Since graphic novels are not grade level specific, they are appropriate for readers across grades. As a genre, graphic …

Ballroom Music Spillover Into A Beluga Whale Aquarium Exhibit, Peter M. Scheifele, John Greer Clark, Kristine Sonstrom, Huikwan Kim, Gopu R. Potty, James H. Miller, Eric Gaglione

Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications

It is not uncommon for modern aquaria to be built with special entertainment areas. There are no known measurements of sound spillover from such entertainment areas into underwater animal exhibits. Entertainment organizations typically prefer to play music for events at 95 and 100 dBA in a ballroom at Georgia Aquarium. Concern over the potential effects of the music and noise on animals in adjacent exhibits inspired an initial project to monitor and compare sound levels in the adjacent underwater exhibits against the typical in-air sound levels of the ballroom. Measured underwater noise levels were compared to modeled levels based on …

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo Jan 2012

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

When examining the human being as a conscious being, we are still to arrive at an understanding of, firstly, the conditions required whereby physical processes give rise to consciousness and secondly, how consciousness is something fundamental to life as an intrinsic part of nature. Humans are complex organisms with myriad interacting systems whereby the convergence of the activities toward the support and development of the whole organism requires a high level of organisation. Though what accounts for the dynamic unity of the human being? From an empirical perspective the question remains unanswered. The aim of this paper is to conceptually …

Testing Phylogenetic Hypotheses Of The Subgenera Of The Freshwater Crayfish Genus Cambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae)., Jesse W Breinholt, Megan L Porter, Keith A Crandall Jan 2012

Testing Phylogenetic Hypotheses Of The Subgenera Of The Freshwater Crayfish Genus Cambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae)., Jesse W Breinholt, Megan L Porter, Keith A Crandall

Computational Biology Institute

BACKGROUND: The genus Cambarus is one of three most species rich crayfish genera in the Northern Hemisphere. The genus has its center of diversity in the Southern Appalachians of the United States and has been divided into 12 subgenera. Using Cambarus we test the correspondence of subgeneric designations based on morphology used in traditional crayfish taxonomy to the underlying evolutionary history for these crayfish. We further test for significant correlation and explanatory power of geographic distance, taxonomic model, and a habitat model to estimated phylogenetic distance with multiple variable regression.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We use three mitochondrial and one nuclear gene …

A Genomic Island In Salmonella Enterica Ssp. Salamae Provides New Insights On The Genealogy Of The Locus Of Enterocyte Effacement., P Scott Chandry, Simon Gladman, Sean C Moore, Torsten Seemann, Keith A Crandall, Narelle Fegan

Computational Biology Institute

The genomic island encoding the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) is an important virulence factor of the human pathogenic Escherichia coli. LEE typically encodes a type III secretion system (T3SS) and secreted effectors capable of forming attaching and effacing lesions. Although prominent in the pathogenic E. coli such as serotype O157:H7, LEE has also been detected in Citrobacter rodentium, E. albertii, and although not confirmed, it is likely to also be in Shigella boydii. Previous phylogenetic analysis of LEE indicated the genomic island was evolving through stepwise acquisition of various components. This study describes a new LEE region from two …

Life Cycles Of American Legal History Through Bob Dylan's Eyes, Laurie Serafino Jan 2012

Life Cycles Of American Legal History Through Bob Dylan's Eyes, Laurie Serafino

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article will examine, from a legal perspective, Dylan's ideas on social policy and change. It begins with an in-depth look at the treatment of African Americans before, during, and after the Civil War by looking at relevant legal statutes and Supreme Court Cases. This Article then looks to the second cycle of revolution to gain Dylan's attention, the struggle of the worker and immigrant during the twentieth century. This article concludes by examining current domestic issues in the third cycle of revolution-- specifically, how corporations exert significant domination over the political process.

Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Sleep Variables: Results From The National Health And Nutrition Survey 2005–2008, R Constance Wiener

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Sleep disordered breathing as well as high serum uric acid levels are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, studies evaluating the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and hyperuricemia are limited. We examined the 2005–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination survey's sleep variables and high serum uric acid among 6491 participants aged ≥ 2 0 years. The sleep variables included sleep duration, snoring, snorting, and daytime sleepiness. The main outcome was high serum uric acid level, defined as levels of serum uric acid > 6 . 8 mg/dL in males and > 6 . 0 mg/dL in females. We found that snoring more …

Severe Diabetes And Leptin Resistance Cause Differential Hepatic And Renal Transporter Expression In Mice, Vijay More, Xia Wen, Paul E. Thomas, Lauren M. Aleksunes, Angela L. Slitt

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Type-2 Diabetes is a major health concern in the United States and other Westernized countries, with prevalence increasing yearly. There is a need to better model and predict adverse drug reactions, drug-induced liver injury, and drug efficacy in this population. Because transporters significantly contribute to drug clearance and disposition, it is highly significant to determine whether a severe diabetes phenotype alters drug transporter expression, and whether diabetic mouse models have altered disposition of acetaminophen (APAP) metabolites.

Results:

Transporter mRNA and protein expression were quantified in livers and kidneys of adult C57BKS and db/db mice, which have a …

Age-Related Inducibility Of Carboxylesterases By The Antiepileptic Agent Phenobarbital And Implications In Drug Metabolism And Lipid Accumulation, Da Xiao, Yi-Tzai Chen, Dongfang Yang, Bingfang Yan

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Carboxylesterases (CES) constitute a class of hydrolytic enzymes that play critical roles in drug metabolism and lipid mobilization. Previous studies with a large number of human liver samples have suggested that the inducibility of carboxylesterases is inversely related with age. To directly test this possibility, neonatal (10 days of age) and adult mice were treated with the antiepileptic agent phenobarbital. The expression and hydrolytic activity were determined on six major carboxylesterases including ces1d, the ortholog of human CES1. Without exception, all carboxylesterases tested were induced to a greater extent in neonatal than adult mice. The induction was detected at mRNA, …

Testing, Testing 1,2,3, Eugenia Hogenkamp

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: Since childhood, most human beings have been raised on the foundation of accepting and adhering to the “Golden Rule” in everyday aspects of life. We have grown to appreciate the idea that one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reports that more than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests; lab experimentations and lessons in the sciences; medical training exercises; and curiosity-driven medical experiments. Why do human beings sit back and do nothing, knowing that these …

Sex Differences In Marital Satisfaction And Happiness: The Contribrution Of Children, Attractiveness, And Financial Status, Lisa Marie Dillon Jan 2012

Sex Differences In Marital Satisfaction And Happiness: The Contribrution Of Children, Attractiveness, And Financial Status, Lisa Marie Dillon

Wayne State University Dissertations

Though numerous studies in the evolutionary psychology literature have investigated how humans select mates in order to successfully reproduce and raise progeny to reproductive maturity, few have examined if factors involved in mate selection matter in marital satisfaction and individual happiness. Being youthful and attractive are indices of reproductive viability and are traits preferred by men universally while women are most known to prefer a mate of high financial status (Buss, 1989), thus underscoring the importance of a male's ability to offer financial investment to potential mates. In addition, women are more likely to evaluate the parental ability of potential …

Class Structure In Great Expectations: Dictate Your Own Fate, Alicia Upham Jan 2012

Class Structure In Great Expectations: Dictate Your Own Fate, Alicia Upham

English Senior Seminar Papers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

The formation of class structure is often dependent upon a set of criteria that reveals divisions between individuals. The old model of class ranking within England during the nineteenth century favored a rigid structure reliant on occupational differences. A new model began to take shape during the end of the century that relied on the morality and character of individuals. The new model provided the opportunity for mobility and achievement of new roles through self-determination. Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations portrays both models of class structure within the nineteenth century …

10. My Name Is Myshkin: A Philosophical Novel For Children By David Kennedy, David Kennedy

Middle School Curriculum

My Name is Myshkin is a philosophical novel written with children ages approximately 10-14 in mind. The book offers a fantasy adventure plot line interweaving narrative themes of ecology, mythology, psychology, spirituality and social justice, which interplay with its more purely philosophical material. Myshkin, the ten-year old narrator of the story, engages in numerous conversations with three school friends. A few of the many questions they take up are: whether one “is” one’s body, how we can tell what is real, animals and humans, youth and age, what is alive, the origins of evil, superstition and belief, whether there is …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The negative effect of invasive species on native species, communities, and ecosystems is widely recognized, and the economic effects in the United States are estimated to be billions of dollars annually. Studies often examine traits of nonnative species or examine what makes a particular habitat invasible. To better understand the factors governing invasions, we used the flora of Nebraska to characterize and compare native and nonnative plant occurrences throughout the state. In addition, we assessed four critical landscape predictors of nonnative plant richness: human population size and three land cover attributes that included percentage of grassland, percentage of agriculture, and …
