Force Protection And Suicide Bombers: The Necessity For Two Types Of Canadian Military Red Teams, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2012

Force Protection And Suicide Bombers: The Necessity For Two Types Of Canadian Military Red Teams, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article will discuss why the use of two types of red teams - analytical and physical - to identify and then simulate ‘suicide bomber threat scenarios’ is necessary for the force protection training of deploying Canadian military units. Red teaming as a discipline can be divided into two basic forms: (1) analytical red teaming, which is diegetic in nature; that is, based upon descriptive products and decision support functions and (2) physical red teaming, which is mimetic in nature; that is, derived from live-action and role playing-based training with an opposing force (OPFOR) deployed against a friendly military unit. …

Molecular Profiles Of Hcv Cirrhotic Tissues Derived In A Panel Of Markers With Clinical Utility For Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance, Ricardo Gehrau, Kellie Archer, Valeria Mas, Daniel Maluf

Biostatistics Publications

Background

Early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection is difficult because low accuracy of surveillance tests. Genome-wide analyses were performed using HCV-cirrhosis with HCC to identify predictive signatures.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Cirrhotic liver tissue was collected from 107 HCV-infected patients with diagnosis of HCC at pre-transplantation and confirmed in explanted livers. Study groups included: 1) microarray hybridization set (n = 80) including patients without (woHCC = 45) and with (wHCC = 24) HCC, and with incidental HCC (iHCC = 11); 2) independent validation set (n = 27; woHCC = 16, wHCC = 11). Pairwise comparisons were performed using moderated t-test. FDR<1% was considered significant. L1-penalized logistic regression model was fit for woHCC and wHCC microarrays, and tested against iHCC. Prediction model genes were validated in independent set by qPCR. The genomic profile was associated with genetic disorders and cancer focused on gene expression, cell cycle and cell death. Molecular profile analysis revealed cell cycle progression and arrest at G2/M, but progressing to mitosis; unregulated DNA damage check-points, and apoptosis. The prediction model included 17 molecules demonstrated 98.6% of accuracy and correctly classified 6 out of 11 undiagnosed iHCC cases. The best model performed even better in the additional independent set.

Towards A Life-History-Based Management Framework For The Effects Of Flow On Juvenile Salmonids In Streams And Rivers, K. H. Nislow, J. D. Armstrong Jan 2012

Towards A Life-History-Based Management Framework For The Effects Of Flow On Juvenile Salmonids In Streams And Rivers, K. H. Nislow, J. D. Armstrong

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Salmonid fishes have complex life cycles involving major changes in habitat requirements at different stages in their life history. Effects of changes in flow and flow regime on salmonids are therefore highly stage specific. Successful management requires consideration of stage-specific influences and integration of these effects over the entire life history to predict ultimate impacts on abundance and population viability. The state of science regarding stage-specific influences of flow regime on juvenile salmonids and their habitats, referring specifically to fundamental attributes of natural regimes and to characteristic alterations of these regimes associated with water management, is reviewed. It appears that …

Tracing Notochord-Derived Cells Using A Noto-Cre Mouse: Implications For Intervertebral Disc Development., Matthew R Mccann, Owen J Tamplin, Janet Rossant, Cheryle A Séguin

Physiology and Pharmacology Publications

Back pain related to intervertebral disc degeneration is the most common musculoskeletal problem, with a lifetime prevalence of 82%. The lack of effective treatment for this widespread problem is directly related to our limited understanding of disc development, maintenance and degeneration. The aim of this study was to determine the developmental origins of nucleus pulposus cells within the intervertebral disc using a novel notochord-specific Cre mouse. To trace the fate of notochordal cells within the intervertebral disc, we derived a notochord-specific Cre mouse line by targeting the homeobox gene Noto. Expression of this gene is restricted to the node and …

Microfinance: A Tool For Diminishing Food Insecurity, Ashley Armstrong Jan 2012

Microfinance: A Tool For Diminishing Food Insecurity, Ashley Armstrong

Miller Center Fellowship

Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America. Most Paraguayans fail to get the nutritional value they need with 25.5% of the adult population living under the minimum dietary consumption level (WHO, 2012). Food security in Paraguay is not primarily affected by food availability but rather by food access and food use, which are heavily influenced by poverty, education, culture, land tenure, and domestic agricultural production. Microfinance – the business of supplying financial services to poor people who are frequently excluded from the formal banking sector – is a viable vehicle for diminishing food insecurity in Paraguay by …

Middle School Special Education Reading Teachers' Experiences Utilizing Study Island Technology To Enhance Male Students' Literacy: An Exploratory Case Study, Roddran Grimes Jan 2012

Middle School Special Education Reading Teachers' Experiences Utilizing Study Island Technology To Enhance Male Students' Literacy: An Exploratory Case Study, Roddran Grimes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This mixed methods study examined the experiences that four middle school special education teachers had implementing an online education program called Study Island in their reading classes. The teachers wanted to increase their students' reading decoding and comprehension skills and also wanted to prepare their students for their state's standardized test. Many male students today are underachieving academically and lack motivation to excel in their studies. Because boys comprise the majority gender in most resource classes (i.e., only special education students), this study focused on the male population in order to determine whether an online education program with a game …

The Frying Pan Or The Fire: Public Attitudes About Using Herbicides To Manage Invasive Weeds, Mariah Evans, Kimberly Rollins Jan 2012

The Frying Pan Or The Fire: Public Attitudes About Using Herbicides To Manage Invasive Weeds, Mariah Evans, Kimberly Rollins

Articles

How do we balance risks? This paper assesses hypotheses derived from instrumental rationality and risk society theories about the reasoning strategies that people will use to develop views supportive or oppositional to the use of herbicides to manage cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), an invasive weed. Cheatgrass is well-known in the population of the American West to increase wildfire risks substantially and to harm the environment in other ways. But are the cures worse than the disease? One demonstrably effective method of cheatgrass suppression is the use of herbicides, and the paper explores sources of support for and opposition to …

Dropped Calls: The Extent Of The Free Speech Guarantee To Wireless Communications Service, Candice Shin Jan 2012

Dropped Calls: The Extent Of The Free Speech Guarantee To Wireless Communications Service, Candice Shin

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

From former President Hosni Mubarak's final days as ruler of Egypt to the Bay Area Rapid Transit's response to the protests on August 11, 2011, governmental entities have increasingly responded to civil unrest by restricting or shutting down wireless communication networks to thrwart further coordination among civilian agitators. Whether BART itself faces another occasion in which to consider disabling its wireless infrastructure, future protests and threats to public safety in the United States are inevitable. To that end, Congress has considered bills that would grant the President the ability to essentially shut down the Internet, including the Protecting Cyberspace as …

Ccl2 (Mcp-1) Mediates Chronic Pelvic Pain Through Mast Cells In Experimental Autoimmune Cystitis, Fuat Bicer Jan 2012

Ccl2 (Mcp-1) Mediates Chronic Pelvic Pain Through Mast Cells In Experimental Autoimmune Cystitis, Fuat Bicer

ETD Archive

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a chronic inflammatory bladder condition with unknown pathophysiology. Chronic pelvic pain is one of the most important and disturbing symptoms of IC/PBS, beside urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia. Increased amounts of mast cells (MCs) and CCL2 have been found in bladder tissue and urine, respectively. Whether or not there is a causal relationship between CCL2, MCs, and pelvic pain in IC/PBS is unknown. Methods: Female BALB/c mice were immunized with a peptide consisting of residues 65-84 of the bladder urothelium-specific protein uroplakin 3A to induce experimental autoimmune cystitis (EAC), a model for human IC/PBS. …

Gain-Of-Function Mutations In Scn5a Gene Lead To Type-3 Long Qt Syndrome, Fang Fang Jan 2012

Gain-Of-Function Mutations In Scn5a Gene Lead To Type-3 Long Qt Syndrome, Fang Fang

ETD Archive

Type-3 long QT syndrome, which is related to type 5 voltage-gated sodium channel alpha subunit (SCN5A) mutation, has been identified since 1995. LQTS mutation in SCN5A is a gain-of-function mutation producing late sodium current, INa,L. Brugada mutation in SCN5A is a loss-of-function causing INa decrease. Whereas, the mechanism for Dilated Cardiomyopathy mutations in SCN5A is still not fully understood. N1325S is one of the first series of mutations identified for type-3 LQTS. Our lab created a mouse model for LQTS by expressing SCN5A mutation N1325S in the mouse hearts (TG-NS) and a matched experimental control line with overexpression of wild- …

Development And Characterization Of Experimental Autoimmune Cystitis (Eac), Kenan Izgi Jan 2012

Development And Characterization Of Experimental Autoimmune Cystitis (Eac), Kenan Izgi

ETD Archive

Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome(IC/PBS) is a chronic inflammation of the urinary bladder, consisting of irritative voiding symptoms frequent and urgent urination and pain referred to the pelvic region or the bladder upon filling, lack of other pathology. The pathophysiology of interstitial cystitis (IC) is enigmatic. The impaired urothelium of bladder and autoimmunity might lead the underlying pathology. One of the shortcomings in IC/PBS research has been the lack of an appropriate animal model. In the current study, we show that the bladder specific Uroplakin 3A (UPK3A)-derived immunogenic UPK3A 65-84 peptide is capable of targeting experimental autoimmune cystitis (EAC) in BALB/c …

Ellagic Acid-Mediated Ck2 Inhibition;A Natural, Multifunctional Strategy To Trigger Cervical Cancer Cell Death In Vitro And In Vivo, Hanan F. Mohammad

ETD Archive

Targeting CK2 for cancer therapy has proven effective in inhibiting tumor growth in several histology's. The main goal of this study was to acquire pre-clinical data on a naturally occurring CK2-inhibitor (ellagic acid) in support of a human clinical trial. In vitro analysis included testing the spectrum of ellagic acid anti-cancer activity, defining the mode of growth inhibition in cancer cells and its impact on biochemical and molecular pathways. In vivo studies included determination of ellagic acid inhibitory effect in animal tumor models and toxicity analysis. We found that CK2 inhibition mediated by ellagic acid, was effective in inhibiting the …

In Vitro Biomechanical Testing And Computational: Modeling In Spine, Mageswaran Prasath Jan 2012

In Vitro Biomechanical Testing And Computational: Modeling In Spine, Mageswaran Prasath

ETD Archive

Two separate in vitro biomechanical studies were conducted on human cadaveric spines (Lumbar) to evaluate the stability following the implantation of two different spinal fixation devices interspinous fixation device (ISD) and Hybrid dynamic stabilizers. ISD was evaluated as a stand-alone and in combination with unilateral pedicle rod system. The results were compared against the gold standard, spinal fusion (bilateral pedicle rod system). The second study involving the hybrid dynamic system, evaluated the effect on adjacent levels using a hybrid testing protocol. A robotic spine testing system was used to conduct the biomechanical tests. This system has the ability to apply …
