Aging Contributes To Inflammation In Upper Extremity Tendons And Declines In Forelimb Agility In A Rat Model Of Upper Extremity Overuse., David M Kietrys, Ann E Barr-Gillespie, Mamta Amin, Christine K Wade, Steve N Popoff, Mary F Barbe Jan 2012

Aging Contributes To Inflammation In Upper Extremity Tendons And Declines In Forelimb Agility In A Rat Model Of Upper Extremity Overuse., David M Kietrys, Ann E Barr-Gillespie, Mamta Amin, Christine K Wade, Steve N Popoff, Mary F Barbe

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

We sought to determine if tendon inflammatory and histopathological responses increase in aged rats compared to young rats performing a voluntary upper extremity repetitive task, and if these changes are associated with motor declines. Ninety-six female Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the rat model of upper extremity overuse: 67 aged and 29 young adult rats. After a training period of 4 weeks, task rats performed a voluntary high repetition low force (HRLF) handle-pulling task for 2 hrs/day, 3 days/wk for up to 12 weeks. Upper extremity motor function was assessed, as were inflammatory and histomorphological changes in flexor digitorum and …

Apo A1 Mimetic Rescues The Diabetic Phenotype Of Ho-2 Knockout Mice Via An Increase In Ho-1 Adiponectin And Lkbi Signaling Pathway, Jian Cao, Nitin Puri, Komal Sodhi, Lars Bellner, Nader G. Abraham, Attallah Kappas Jan 2012

Apo A1 Mimetic Rescues The Diabetic Phenotype Of Ho-2 Knockout Mice Via An Increase In Ho-1 Adiponectin And Lkbi Signaling Pathway, Jian Cao, Nitin Puri, Komal Sodhi, Lars Bellner, Nader G. Abraham, Attallah Kappas

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Insulin resistance, with adipose tissue dysfunction, is one of the hallmarks of metabolic syndrome. We have reported a metabolic syndrome-like phenotype in heme oxygenase (HO)-2 knockout mice, which presented with concurrent HO-1 deficiency and were amenable to rescue by an EET analog. Apo A-I mimetic peptides, such as L-4F, have been shown to induce HO-1 expression and decrease oxidative stress and adiposity. In this study we aimed to characterize alleviatory effects of HO-1 induction (if any) on metabolic imbalance observed in HO-2 KO mice. In this regard, HO-2(−/−) mice were injected with 2 mg/kg/day L-4F, or vehicle, i.p., for …

George W. Bush, The American Press, And The Initial Framing Of The War On Terror After 9/11, Stephen D. Cooper, Jim A. Kuypers, Matthew T. Althouse

Communications Faculty Research

President George W. Bush's speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations on November I 0, 200 I, marks an important moment in the history of the War on Terror. 1 It followed closely upon the joint U.S.-Northern Alliance military capture of Mazari Sarif, Afghanistan, which significantly disrupted the Taliban's operations and arguably marked the official beginning of America's War on Terror. As President Bush stated, "The time for sympathy has now passed; the time for action has now arrived."2 In some ways, the speech offered nothing new. It reiterated words and ideas that the president frequently used to …

Consumption Of High Ω-3 Fatty Acid Diet Suppressed Prostate Tumorigenesis In C3(1) Tag Mice, Juliana A. Akinsete, Gabriela Ion, Theodore R. Witte, W. Elaine Hardman Jan 2012

Consumption Of High Ω-3 Fatty Acid Diet Suppressed Prostate Tumorigenesis In C3(1) Tag Mice, Juliana A. Akinsete, Gabriela Ion, Theodore R. Witte, W. Elaine Hardman

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Prostate cancer incidence and mortality are high in the Western world and high ω-6/ω-3 PUFA in the Western diet may be a contributing factor. We investigated whether changing from a diet that approximates ω-6 fat content of the Western diet to a high ω-3 fat diet at adulthood might reduce prostate cancer risk. Female SV 129 mice that had consumed a high ω-6 diet containing corn oil for 2 weeks were bred with homozygous C3(1)Tag transgenic male mice. All male offspring were weaned to the corn oil diet (CO) until postpuberty when half of the male offspring were transferred to …

Effect Of Varying Exercise Intensities On Gdnf Expression And Neuromuscular Junction Morphology, Amy Morrison Gyorkos, Monica J. Mccullough, John Spitsbergen Jan 2012

Effect Of Varying Exercise Intensities On Gdnf Expression And Neuromuscular Junction Morphology, Amy Morrison Gyorkos, Monica J. Mccullough, John Spitsbergen

Biological Sciences Faculty and Graduate Student Research

Glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) supports and maintains the neuromuscular system during development and through adulthood by promoting neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine if different intensities of exercise can promote changes in GDNF expression and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) morphology in slow- and fast-twitch muscles. Rats were randomly assigned to a low intensity run-training (run group), higher intensity swim-training (swim group), or control group. GDNF protein content increased in both soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) following run-training and in EDL following swim-training determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. NMJ morphology was analyzed by measuring α-bungarotoxin …

The Role Of Larval Dispersal In Metapopulation Gene Flow: Local Population Dynamics Matter, Daphne M. Munroe, John .. Klinck, Eileen E. Hofmann, Eric N. Powell Jan 2012

The Role Of Larval Dispersal In Metapopulation Gene Flow: Local Population Dynamics Matter, Daphne M. Munroe, John .. Klinck, Eileen E. Hofmann, Eric N. Powell

Journal of Marine Research

The degree of genetic connectivity among populations in a metapopulation has direct consequences for species evolution, development of disease resistance, and capacity of a metapopulation to adapt to climate change. This study used a metapopulation model that integrates population dynamics, dispersal, and genetics within an individual-based model framework to examine the mechanisms and dynamics of genetic connectivity within a metapopulation. The model was parameterized to simulate four populations of oysters (Crassostrea virginica) from Delaware Bay on the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. Differences among the four populations include a strong spatial gradient in mortality, a spatial gradient …

Oyster Food Supply In Delaware Bay: Estimation From A Hydrodynamic Model And Interaction With The Oyster Population, Eric N. Powell, Danielle A. Kreeger, Jason M. Morson, Dale B. Haidvogel, Zhiren Wang, Roger Thomas, Jennifer E. Gius

Journal of Marine Research

To evaluate oyster food supply, water samples were collected at fifteen sites in Delaware Bay nearmonthly in 2009 and 2010. Food was estimated as the sum of particulate protein, labile carbohydrate, and lipid. Delaware Bay shows a typical spring bloom, centered in March and April, with declining food supply thereafter into early fall, followed sporadically by a minor fall bloom. The geographic and temporal structure of food was more predictable in summer to early fall, and considerably less predictable in spring. Five variables each based on temperature and the spatial and temporal variability of temperature were significant contributors to a …

The Effect Of E-Cadherin Loss On Melanoma Formation And Metastasis, Lara Rosenbaum Jan 2012

The Effect Of E-Cadherin Loss On Melanoma Formation And Metastasis, Lara Rosenbaum

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer and accounts for the majority of skin cancer related mortality. Early metastases are characteristic of melanoma and are an ominous sign, as current therapeutic interventions have little effect on overall survival. The lack of accurate prognostic indicators and effective therapies emphasize the need for a better understanding of the genetic and phenotypic changes in melanoma formation and progression. One such change is the loss of E-cadherin, which normally plays a role in cell-cell adhesion and is thought to be a central feature of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Maintenance of E-cadherin in melanoma …

Forelimb Kinematics During Swimming In The Pig-Nosed Turtle, Carettochelys Insculpta, Compared With Other Turtle Taxa: Rowing Versus Flapping, Convergenceversus Intermediacy, Angela R.V. Rivera, Gabriel Rivera, Richard W. Blob Jan 2012

Forelimb Kinematics During Swimming In The Pig-Nosed Turtle, Carettochelys Insculpta, Compared With Other Turtle Taxa: Rowing Versus Flapping, Convergenceversus Intermediacy, Angela R.V. Rivera, Gabriel Rivera, Richard W. Blob

Publications

Animals that swim using appendages do so by way of rowing and/or flapping motions. Often considered discrete categories, rowing and flapping are more appropriately regarded as points along a continuum. The pig-nosed turtle, Carettochelys insculpta, is unusual in that it is the only freshwater turtle to have limbs modified into flippers and swim via synchronous forelimb motions that resemble dorsoventral flapping, traits that evolved independently from their presence in sea turtles. We used high-speed videography to quantify forelimb kinematics in C. insculpta and a closely related, highly aquatic rower (Apalone ferox). Comparisons of our new data with those previously collected …

Unmasking Children's Agency, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

Unmasking Children's Agency, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to identify (unmask) and critique the movement to promote children’s agency as a cornerstone of research, care, education and intervention with children. The article makes a case that this movement is harmful to a scientific approach to the study of childhood, distorts or ignores key understandings of the evolution of childhood and culture. The article demonstrates that the agency movement is ethnocentric, classist and hegemonic representing the dominance of contemporary bourgeoisie child-rearing. It imposes a single, privileged ethnotheory of childhood upon the diverse societies of the world with alternative ethnotheories and practices. Lastly, the …

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Cultural ecosystem services (ES) are consistently recognized but not yet adequately defined or integrated within the ES framework. A substantial body of models, methods, and data relevant to cultural services has been developed within the social and behavioral sciences before and outside of the ES approach. A selective review of work in landscape aesthetics, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and spiritual significance demonstrates opportunities for operationally defining cultural services in terms of socioecological models, consistent with the larger set of ES. Such models explicitly link ecological structures and functions with cultural values and benefits, facilitating communication between scientists and stakeholders and …

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema Jan 2012

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema

English Faculty Publications

First-year writing students are a very large, diverse, and ubiquitous information user group, as writing courses are typically required of all undergraduate students, regardless of major. While in their institution's writing program, students frequently must utilize research (information) in their writing assignments. While this formal, task-related information behavior is important for stakeholders in the fields of information science and the humanities to understand, little research has been done on this significant group of students. This study arrived at key exploratory findings by collecting data and context from first-year writing students through semi-structured interviews. The researchers found that students continue to …

Species And Habitat Interactions Of The Gopher Tortoise: A Keystone Species?, Christopher Catano Jan 2012

Species And Habitat Interactions Of The Gopher Tortoise: A Keystone Species?, Christopher Catano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Species-species and species-habitat interactions have been demonstrated to be important in influencing diversity across a variety of ecosystems. Despite generalities in the importance of these interactions, appropriate mechanisms to explain them are absent in many systems. In sandhill systems of the southeast U.S., gopher tortoises have been hypothesized to be a crucial species in the maintenance of diversity and function. However, the mechanisms and magnitude in which they influence their communities and habitats have rarely been empirically quantified. I examined how habitat structure influences tortoise abandonment of burrows and how tortoise densities influence nonvolant vertebrate community diversity. Tortoise burrow abandonment …

Toxic Effects Of Copper, Cadmium, And Methoxychlor Shown By Neutral Red Retention Assay In Two Species Of Freshwater Molluscs, Nikolett Molnar, Peter Fong

Biology Faculty Publications

We used neutral red retention assay in lysosomes of digestive gland cells as an indicator for stress effects by the environmental contaminants Cu, Cd, and the pesticide methoxychlor in two freshwater molluscs, the unionid mussel, Elliptio complanata (Lightfoot) and the ramshorn snail Helisoma trivolvis (Say). Mussels and snails were exposed for 7 and 14 days to Cu and Cd each at nominal concentrations of 2.5 μg/L, 5.0 μg/L, and 10.0 μg/L, and to methoxychlor concentrations of 1.0 μg/L, 10.0μg/L, and 100.0 μg/L. Both mussels and snails exposed to Cu showed a significant increase in the percent of destabilized lysosomes compared …

The Role Of Cadmium And Nickel In Estrogen Receptor Signaling And Breast Cancer: Metalloestrogens Or Not?, Natalie B. Aquino, Mary B. Sevigny, Jackielyn Sabangan, Maggie C. Louie

Collected Faculty Scholarship

During the last half-century, incidences of breast cancer have increased globally. Various factors —genetic and environmental— have been implicated in the initiation and progression of this disease. One potential environmental risk factor that has not received a lot of attention is the exposure to heavy metals. While several mechanisms have been put forth describing how high concentrations of heavy metals play a role in carcinogenesis, it is unclear whether chronic, lowlevel exposure to certain heavy metals (i.e. cadmium and nickel), can directly result in the development and progression of cancer. Cadmium and nickel have been hypothesized to play a role …

Nest Success And Hatchling Survival Of American Alligators Within Inland Wetlands Of East Texas, Warren C. Conway, Gary Calkins, David Saalfeld Jan 2012

Nest Success And Hatchling Survival Of American Alligators Within Inland Wetlands Of East Texas, Warren C. Conway, Gary Calkins, David Saalfeld

Faculty Publications

Because of liberalization of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) harvest management in Texas, estimates of nest success and hatchling survival for inland populations are essential for long-term, sustainable population and harvest management. To date, few studies have examined American alligator nest success and hatchling survival. We initiated a 3-year study from 2006 to 2008 to document alligator nest success and hatchling survival within several wetlands in east Texas. From June 2006 to August 2008, we located 30 nests from 3 wetlands within east Texas, where overall nest success was 44.2% (95% CI=25.1– 63.1%), irrespective of year. Nest circumference and day during …

Snowy Plover Nest Site Selection, Spatial Patterning, And Temperatures In The Southern High Plains Of Texas, David Saalfeld, Warren C. Conway, William P. Johnson, David A. Haukos

Faculty Publications

Snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus) populations have declined throughout their range, in part because of habitat degradation and poor nest success, making information regarding regionally specific nest site selection and spatial patterns important when considering habitat conservation and management guidelines. We determined nest site selection characteristics (n=80) and examined spatial patterns (n=215) of snowy plover nests in saline lakes in the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas. At 104 nests, we examined the influence of substrate type on nest temperatures and heat mitigation. Snowy plover nests were more likely to be found near an object, on pebble substrate, and with fewer …
