Unveiling French Xenophobia: A Study Of Prejudice Against Arabs In France, Carissa Porter Jan 2012

Unveiling French Xenophobia: A Study Of Prejudice Against Arabs In France, Carissa Porter

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper reports on the socioeconomic status of Arabs and how attitudes toward them vary between France and the United States. It is intended to illuminate the French perspective toward Arabs to an American audience while comparing it to the American perspective. Arabs hold a lower socioeconomic status in France than in America. They are frequently target ed by French policy, which has formerly aimed to repatriate them but now focuses on assimilating them. In America, Arabs face less cultural oppression, but more political exclusion. Because Americans prize independence as opposed to community, Arabs have more freedom to retain their …

Factors Associated With Acute Lung Injury In Combat Casualties Receiving Massive Blood Transfusions: A Retrospective Analysis, Chee M. Chan, Andrew F. Shorr, Jeremy G. Perkins

United States Army: Publications

Purpose: We sought to determine if use of warm fresh whole blood (WFWB), rather than blood component therapy, alters rates of acute lung injury (ALI) in patients with trauma.

Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed rates of ALI in patients undergoing massive blood transfusions while at a combat support hospital. Patients with ALI were compared with those not developing ALI with respect to demographics, trauma type, severity of illness, crystalloid volume given, and exposure to WFWB. Logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with ALI.

Results: The cohort included 591 subjects (mean age, 28 ± 8.1 …

Lost And Found: Pondering The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Robert L. Millet Jan 2012

Lost And Found: Pondering The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Robert L. Millet

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

The parable of the prodigal son is among the most beloved and consoling of the Savior’s teachings. This literary masterpiece is essentially a distillation of God’s plan of salvation, a sobering insight into human nature—men and women’s tendency to stray, their inclination toward envy, the temptation to judge unrighteously. And yet towering above the condition of the two sons—each a prodigal in his own way—is the tender revelation of the waiting father, the actual hero of the story. His capacity to love without limits, to readily forgive, and to celebrate the return of a wandering child is as stunning as …

Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2012

Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal sonship is a key theme of Mosiah 1–6, including King Benjamin’s seminal address at the temple in Zarahemla (Mosiah 2–5) on the occasion of his son Mosiah’s enthronement. Benjamin, however, caps this covenant sermon, not with an assertion of his son’s royal status and privileges, but with a radical declaration of his people’s royal rebirth (or adoption) as “ the children of Christ, his sons and his daughters” (Mosiah 5:7) and their potential enthronement at God’s “ right hand” (5:9). Similar to rhetorical wordplay involving proper names found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other ancient texts, …

Neocolonialism And The Global Prison In National Geographic's Locked Up Abroad, Casey R. Kelly Jan 2012

Neocolonialism And The Global Prison In National Geographic's Locked Up Abroad, Casey R. Kelly

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

This essay examines the reformulation of colonial ideologies in National Geographic Channel's Locked Up Abroad, a documentary program that chronicles the narratives of Westerner travelers incarcerated in foreign nations. An analysis of Locked Up Abroad evinces neocolonialism in contemporary media culture, including: the historic association between dark-skin and savagery, the backwardness of the non-Western world, and the Western imperative to civilize it. The program's documentary techniques and framing devises sustain an Otherizing gaze toward non-Western societies, and its portrayals elide a critical analysis of colonialism in its present forms. I advocate for neocolonial criticism to trace how NatGeo remains haunted …

The Bayesian Continual Reassessment Method Using A Mixture-Of-Uniforms Prior, Thomas M. Braun Jan 2012

The Bayesian Continual Reassessment Method Using A Mixture-Of-Uniforms Prior, Thomas M. Braun

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Traditionally, the Bayesian formulation of the Continual Reassessment Method (CRM) is implemented with a one-parameter model describing the association of dose with the probability of dose-limiting toxicity (DLT). Determination of the appropriate value of the prior variance is often done via simulation over a grid search of possible values until suitable operating characteristics are found. However, it is under-appreciated that the operating characteristics for a given value of the prior variance vary by the “skeleton,” which is the vector of a priori probabilities of DLT for each dose. The skeleton implicitly leads to a set of indifference intervals, with one …

Phytochemical Constituents And Pharmacological Activities Of Eryngium L.(Apiaceae), Ping Wang, Zushang Su, Wei Yuan, Guangrui Deng, Shiyou Li

Faculty Publications

Eryngium L. is the largest and arguably the most taxonomically complex genus of the family Apiaceae. The genus has approximately 250 species throughout the world, with the center of diversity in South America. Some Eryngium species are cultivated as ornamental, vegetable, or medicinal crops for folk uses. With increasing chemical and biological investigations, Eryngium has shown its potential as pharmaceutical crops. This review focuses on phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of 127 compounds isolated and identified from 23 species of Eryngium, particularly nonessential oil compounds such as terpenoids, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, polyacetylenes, and steroids. Eryngium extracts or isolates have shown …

Fusing Heterogeneous Data For Detection Under Non-Stationary Dependence, Hao He, Arun Subramanian, Pramod K. Varshney, Thyagaraju Damarla Jan 2012

Fusing Heterogeneous Data For Detection Under Non-Stationary Dependence, Hao He, Arun Subramanian, Pramod K. Varshney, Thyagaraju Damarla

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, we consider the problem of detection for dependent, non-stationary signals where the non-stationarity is encoded in the dependence structure. We employ copula theory, which allows for a general parametric characterization of the joint distribution of sensor observations and, hence, allows for a more general description of inter-sensor dependence. We design a copula-based detector using the Neyman-Pearson framework. Our approach involves a sample-wise copula selection scheme, which for a simple hypothesis test, is proved to perform better than previously used single copula selection schemes. We demonstrate the utility of our copula-based approach on simulated data, and also for …

Marked Woman (1937) And The Dialectics Of Art Deco In The Classical Gangster Genre, Drew Todd Jan 2012

Marked Woman (1937) And The Dialectics Of Art Deco In The Classical Gangster Genre, Drew Todd

Faculty Publications

In this article, I analyse the function of Art Deco designs in the 1930s gangster genre and, in particular, Warner Brothers' Marked Woman (Bacon, 1937). Like many gangster films of the period, it associates high-style Art Deco with excess and the criminal underworld. My findings, however, reveal a tension between the film's moralist stance and its visual excess. Compelling visual signifiers of leisure, style and social mobility, the modern designs are free to circumvent the film's critical message and reinforce American capitalist ideologies. My analyses underscore Art Deco as an emblematic style of commercial modernity. Marked Woman and other gangster …

The Effects Of Distractors In Multiple Object Tracking Are Modulated By The Similarity Of Distractor And Target Features, Cary S. Feria Jan 2012

The Effects Of Distractors In Multiple Object Tracking Are Modulated By The Similarity Of Distractor And Target Features, Cary S. Feria

Faculty Publications

Is the effect of distractors in multiple object tracking dependent on the distractors sharing the features of the targets? In experiment 1, observers tracked five targets among five distractors that were identical to the targets and a number of additional distractors that were either identical to or featurally distinct from the targets. Results showed that distractors that are distinct from the targets in shape or color, or are stationary, impair tracking less than distractors that are identical to the targets. However, tracking performance declined as the number of distractors increased, even for featurally distinct distractors. Experiment 2 showed that distractors …

Redox Proteomics In Selected Neurodegenerative Disorders: From Its Infancy To Future Applications, Allan Butterfield, Marzia Perluigi, Tanea Reed, Tasneem Muharib, Christopher P. Hughes, Rena A.S. Robinson, Rukhsana Sultana

Chemistry Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Several studies demonstrated that oxidative damage is a characteristic feature of many neurodegenerative diseases. The accumulation of oxidatively modified proteins may disrupt cellular functions by affecting protein expression, protein turnover, cell signaling, and induction of apoptosis and necrosis, suggesting that protein oxidation could have both physiological and pathological significance. For nearly two decades, our laboratory focused particular attention on studying oxidative damage of proteins and how their chemical modifications induced by reactive oxygen species/reactive nitrogen species correlate with pathology, biochemical alterations, and clinical presentations of Alzheimer's disease. This comprehensive article outlines basic knowledge of oxidative modification of proteins and lipids, …
