Zinc Modifies The Effect Of Phyto-Oestrogens On Osteoblast And Osteoclast Differentiation In Vitro., S Karieb, Sw Fox Nov 2012

Zinc Modifies The Effect Of Phyto-Oestrogens On Osteoblast And Osteoclast Differentiation In Vitro., S Karieb, Sw Fox

School of Biomedical Sciences

Osteoblast and osteoclast activity is disrupted in post-menopausal osteoporosis. Thus, to fully address this imbalance, therapies should reduce bone resorption and promote bone formation. Dietary factors such as phyto-oestrogens and Zn have beneficial effects on osteoblast and osteoclast activity. However, the effect of combinations of these factors has not been widely studied. We therefore examined the effect of coumestrol, daidzein and genistein in the presence or absence of zinc sulphate (Zn) on osteoclast and osteoblast activity. Osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption were significantly reduced by coumestrol (10- 7 m), daidzein (10- 5 m) and genistein (10- 7 m); and this …

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore Nov 2012

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

This essay explores the ways States use their domestic laws to regulate activities that cross national borders. Domestic-law enforcement decisions play an underappreciated role in the development of international regulatory policy, particularly in situations where the enforcing State's power to apply its law extraterritorially is not contested. Collective action problems suggest there will be an undersupply of enforcement decisions that promote global welfare and an oversupply of enforcement decisions that promote national welfare. These collective action problems may be mitigated in part by government networks and other forms of regulatory cooperation.

The Rise Of Transparency And The Decline Of Secrecy In The Age Of Global And Social Media, P.J. Crowley Nov 2012

The Rise Of Transparency And The Decline Of Secrecy In The Age Of Global And Social Media, P.J. Crowley

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

News reporting of a wide range of sensitive government policies, operations, and internal deliberations has raised understandable concerns that U.S. national security is being compromised. In response, there is an increase in investigations and prosecutions and proposed legislation to plug government leaks. But a broader reality may be at work. In the increasingly interconnected and transparent world of the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, satellite television, WikiLeaks, omniscient cellphones and technology-enhanced revolutions such as the Arab Awakening, governments have lost their ability to control the flow of information. More people have access to more information, with the ability to communicate anything from …

Social Evolution, Gerald Gaus, John Thrasher Nov 2012

Social Evolution, Gerald Gaus, John Thrasher

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"It is a mater of dispute how far back evolutionary explanations of social order should be traced. Evolutionary ideas certainly appear in the work of the ancient Greek philosophers, but it seems reasonable to identify the origins of modern evolutionary thinking in the eighteenth century natural histories of civil society such as Rousseau’s Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men (1750, Part III), Adam Ferguson’s An Essay on the History of Civil Society (1767), and Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations (1776, Book III). In these eighteenth century works, the explanation of current social institutions as an unplanned …

The Rhetoric Of The American Dream: Freedom, Democracy And American Exceptionalism, Donna Knudsen Nov 2012

The Rhetoric Of The American Dream: Freedom, Democracy And American Exceptionalism, Donna Knudsen

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

What is the American Dream? The American Dream, significant for its connection to American national identity, has eluded concise definition for more than two centuries. In spite of numerous failed attempts to encapsulate varied and diverse individual dreams within a singular definition, the notion of a common American Dream that rests within assumptions of shared experience endures. This study examines the rhetoric of U.S. Presidential inaugural addresses – George Washington through Barack Obama – combining word frequency searches with a contextual analysis that uncovers common principles associated with the American Dream that have been perpetuated by the nation’s leaders. Discussions …

Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition Attenuates Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Progression In Hyperlipidemic Mice, Sarbani Ghoshal, Charles D Loftin Nov 2012

Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition Attenuates Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Progression In Hyperlipidemic Mice, Sarbani Ghoshal, Charles D Loftin

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are a chronic inflammatory disease that increase the risk of life-threatening aortic rupture. In humans, AAAs have been characterized by increased expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and the inactivation of COX-2 prior to disease initiation reduces AAA incidence in a mouse model of the disease. The current study examined the effectiveness of selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibition on reducing AAA progression when administered after the initiation of AAA formation. AAAs were induced in hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice by chronic angiotensin II (AngII) infusion and the effect of treatment with the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib was examined when initiated at different …

Prosody And Kinesics Based Co-Analysis Towards Continuous Gesture Recognition, Pratiksha Subedi Nov 2012

Prosody And Kinesics Based Co-Analysis Towards Continuous Gesture Recognition, Pratiksha Subedi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The aim of this study is to develop a multimodal co-analysis framework for continuous gesture recognition by exploiting prosodic and kinesics manifestation of natural communication. Using this framework, a co-analysis pattern between correlating components is obtained. The co-analysis pattern is clustered using K-means clustering to determine how well the pattern distinguishes the gestures. Features of the proposed approach that differentiate it from the other models are its less susceptibility to idiosyncrasies, its scalability, and simplicity. The experiment was performed on Multimodal Annotated Gesture Corpus (MAGEC) that we created for research on understanding non-verbal communication community, particularly the gestures.

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock Nov 2012

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In birds, altricial young depend upon adults for food and protection during the first few weeks of life. Begging is hypothesized to communicate an honest signal of a nestling's nutritional needs. I investigated two factors that may influence rate and duration of begging: 1) a nestling's corticosterone (CORT) levels, and 2) food availability. I examined the role of CORT in Florida scrub-jay nestlings through manipulation of CORT levels on days 8-11 post-hatch. I studied the role of food availability by indirectly supplementing all nestlings within a brood through their parents. I quantified nestling and adult behaviors using high definition video. …

An Intelligent Network Of Sensors For Border And Perimeter Security, William E. White Iii Nov 2012

An Intelligent Network Of Sensors For Border And Perimeter Security, William E. White Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Border and perimeter security is a constant concern to many government and private entities. Large, often remote, areas must be constantly monitored for intruders or suspicious activity. This work investigates whether a wireless sensor network of intelligent nodes can provide the infrastructure needed to such applications. First a real time automated algorithm is developed for an existing profiling sensor. Results show that this automation produces reliable results on a limited dataset. To provide a more versatile, easier to deploy solution, a wireless sensor network is designed for deployment in a sensor field test bed located at Meeman-Shelby Forest. The wireless …

The Role Of The Gonads And Incest Avoidance In The Regulation Of Sexual Behavior In Damaraland Mole-Rats, Sara Nicole Carter Nov 2012

The Role Of The Gonads And Incest Avoidance In The Regulation Of Sexual Behavior In Damaraland Mole-Rats, Sara Nicole Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Damaraland mole-rat (DMR; Fukoymys damarensis) is one of a small number of mammals that are eusocial. In this mating system, only a single pair reproduce while the other remaining colony members are non-reproductive. Non-breeders exhibit sexual behavior only when paired with unfamiliar opposite-sex individuals. The role of the gonads in the regulation of reproductive behaviors in non-breeders remains unknown; however, inbreeding avoidance has been hypothesized to account, in part, for the lack of reproductive behavior in non-breeding individuals. The mechanism that regulates incest avoidance also remains unknown. The aims of this study were twofold; first, to investigate the role …

Genetic And Biochemical Dissection Of Differential Functions Of Cryptochrome 1 And 2 In The Mammalian Circadian Clock, Sanjoy Kumar Khan Nov 2012

Genetic And Biochemical Dissection Of Differential Functions Of Cryptochrome 1 And 2 In The Mammalian Circadian Clock, Sanjoy Kumar Khan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Circadian clocks in mammals are based on a negative feedback loop in which transcriptional repression by the Cryptochromes, CRY1 and CRY2, lies at the heart of the mechanism. Despite similarities in their sequence, domain structure and biochemical activity, they play distinct roles in the mammalian clock function. However, detailed biochemical studies have not been straightforward and function of Cryptochrome (Cry) has not been examined in real clock cells using kinetic measurements. In this study, we demonstrate, through cell-based genetic complementation and real-time molecular recording, that Cry1 alone is able to maintain cell-autonomous circadian rhythms, while Cry2 cannot. Using this novel …

Disclosed is a method of synthesizing new optically pure heterocyclic compounds using Pd(0) catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations. Analogs of cyclopentanes, like isoxazoline-2-oxide and furan, with similar framework to the cyclopentanes act as anti-HIV and anticancer agents which opens a whole new field for application of these compounds. Starting from a meso-diol, optically pure compounds were prepared without utilizing chiral ligands at any stage of the synthesis. The stereochemical outcome of the product (>99% ee) was influenced by desymmetrization catalyzed by Pseudomonas cepacia lipase and the stereo selective nature of the palladium catalyzed transformations.

Stopover Decisions Of Migratory Shorebirds: An Assessment Of Habitat Use, Food Availability, Behavior And Phenology, Ryan Stutzman Nov 2012

Stopover Decisions Of Migratory Shorebirds: An Assessment Of Habitat Use, Food Availability, Behavior And Phenology, Ryan Stutzman

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Habitat loss and alteration from land use change, species invasion, and more recently, climate change has reduced biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide. Habitat decisions have important implications to individual fitness as well as population dynamics and community structure. Resource limitation, predation, competition, and unfavorable abiotic conditions all have the potential to influence survival and future reproductive potential. Understanding how changes to ecosystem structure and function impact species and populations of conservation concern is essential for conservation delivery to be effective. Similar to many migratory species, shorebird populations are declining worldwide and declines may be related to the loss of important …

Trophic Complexity And The Adaptive Value Of Damage-Induced Plant Volatiles., Ian Kaplan Nov 2012

Trophic Complexity And The Adaptive Value Of Damage-Induced Plant Volatiles., Ian Kaplan

Department of Entomology Faculty Publications

Indirect plant defenses are those facilitating the action of carnivores in ridding plants of their herbivorous consumers, as opposed to directly poisoning or repelling them. Of the numerous and diverse indirect defensive strategies employed by plants, inducible volatile production has garnered the most fascination among plant-insect ecologists. These volatile chemicals are emitted in response to feeding by herbivorous arthropods and serve to guide predators and parasitic wasps to their prey. Implicit in virtually all discussions of plant volatile-carnivore interactions is the premise that plants “call for help” to bodyguards that serve to boost plant fitness by limiting herbivore damage. This, …

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Although gemcitabine is the standard chemotherapeutic drug for treatment of pancreatic cancer, almost all patients eventually develop resistance to this agent. Previous studies identified Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) as the mediator of gemcitabine resistance, but the molecular mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we show that Plk1 phosphorylation of Orc2 and Hbo1 mediates the resistance to gemcitabine. We show that the level of Plk1 expression positively correlates with gemcitabine resistance, both in pancreatic cancer cells and xenograft tumors. Overexpression of Plk1 increases gemcitabine resistance, while inhibition of Plk1 sensitizes pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine treatment. To validate our findings, we …
