Electroweak production of the top quark is measured for the first time in pp collisions at √s= 7 TeV, using a data set collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from the data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top-quark production. The combined measurement of the …

A search for three-jet hadronic resonance production in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been conducted by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1. Events with high jet multiplicity and a large scalar sum of jet transverse momenta are analyzed using a signature-based approach. The number of expected standard model background events is found to be in good agreement with the observed events. Limits on the cross section times branching ratio are set in a model of gluino pair production with an R …

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the ratio of top quark branching fractions R= B(t→Wb)/B(t→Wq), where q can be a d, s, or b quark, in the lepton + jets and dilepton tt̅ final states. The measurement uses data from 5.4 fb-1 of pp̅ collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure R = 0.90±0.04, and we extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element │Vtb│ as │Vtb│= 0.95 ± 0.02, assuming unitarity of the 3X3 CKM matrix.

The inclusive jet cross section is measured in pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeVat the Large Hadron Collider using the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb-1. The measurement is made for jet transverse momenta in the range 18–1100 GeVand for absolute values of rapidity less than 3. The measured cross section extends to the highest values of jetpT ever observed and, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, is generally in agreement with next-to-leadingorder perturbative QCD predictions.

Kenneth Bloom Publications

A study of events with missing transverse energy and an energetic jet is performed using pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. An excess of these events over standard model contributions is a signature of new physics such as large extra dimensions and unparticles. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the prediction of the standard model, and significant extension of the current limits on parameters of new physics benchmark models is …

First-Principles Study Of Phase Stability Of Gd-Doped Euo And Eus, J. M. An, S. V. Barabash, Vidvuds Ozolins, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Kirill D. Belashchenko

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

Phase diagrams of isoelectronic Eu1−xGdxO and Eu1−x GdxS quasibinary alloy systems are constructed using first-principles calculations combined with a standard cluster-expansion approach and Monte Carlo simulations. The oxide system has a wide miscibility gap on the Gd-rich side but forms ordered compounds on the Eu-rich side, exhibiting a deep asymmetric convex hull in the formation enthalpy diagram. The sulfide system has no stable compounds. The large difference in the formation enthalpies of the oxide and sulfide compounds is attributed to the contribution of local lattice relaxation, which is sensitive to the anion size. …

Consistent Model Of Magnetism In Ferropnictides, Aleksander L. Wysocki, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov Jan 2011

Consistent Model Of Magnetism In Ferropnictides, Aleksander L. Wysocki, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

The discovery of superconductivity in LaFeAsO introduced the ferropnictides as a major new class of superconducting compounds with critical temperatures second only to cuprates. The presence of magnetic iron makes ferropnictides radically different from cuprates. Antiferromagnetism of the parent compounds strongly suggests that superconductivity and magnetism are closely related. However, the character of magnetic interactions and spin fluctuations in ferropnictides, in spite of vigorous efforts, has until now resisted understanding within any conventional model of magnetism. Here we show that the most puzzling features can be naturally reconciled within a rather simple effective spin model with biquadratic interactions, which is …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The endemic Antarctic nematode Scottnema lindsayae is described from specimens collected in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Victoria Land. The recently collected material is compared with the original description and other subsequent descriptions of the species. A more complete scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the species is presented. The phylogenetic position of S. lindsayae is inferred using a secondary structure-based alignment of a partial sequence of nuclear Large Subunit (LSU) ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic trees were inferred using base-paired substitution models implemented in PHASE 2 software and Bayesian inference, and show S. lindsayae as the sister group to Stegelletina taxa.

Kant On Animal Consciousness, Colin Mclear Jan 2011

Kant On Animal Consciousness, Colin Mclear

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Consider two different ways of characterizing the cognitive requirements necessary for perceptual awareness of an objective physical world.1 On the one hand, objective perceptual awareness may only require the sensory capacity for awareness of particular physical individuals and their features, perhaps along with the minimal kinds of cognitive processing needed to integrate received sensory information with behavior. On the other hand, objective perceptual awareness may require not only these low-level cognitive capacities but also conceptual capacities, or perhaps even specific concepts.2 Call these two lines of thought regarding objective perpetual awareness non-conceptualism and conceptualism respectively.

Exchange coupled magnetic hard layer/soft layer thin films show a variety of complex magnetization reversal mechanisms depending on the hierarchy of interaction strengths within and between the films. Magnetization reversal can include uniform rotation, soft layer biasing, as well as exchange spring behavior. We investigate the magnetization reversal of a CoPt/Permalloy/Ta/Permalloy heterostructure. Here, Stoner-Wohlfarth-type uniform magnetization rotation of the virtually free Permalloy layer and exchange spring behavior of the strongly pinned Permalloy layer are found in the same sample. We investigate the complex magnetization reversal by polarized neutron reflectometry, magnetometry, and magneto-transport. The synergy of combining these experimental methods together …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Abstract Background: The orders Ascaridida, Oxyurida, and Spirurida represent major components of zooparasitic nematode diversity, including many species of veterinary and medical importance. Phylum-wide nematode phylogenetic hypotheses have mainly been based on nuclear rDNA sequences, but more recently complete mitochondrial (mtDNA) gene sequences have provided another source of molecular information to evaluate relationships. Although there is much agreement between nuclear rDNA and mtDNA phylogenies, relationships among certain major clades are different. In this study we report that mtDNA sequences do not support the monophyly of Ascaridida, Oxyurida and Spirurida (clade III) in contrast to results for nuclear rDNA. Results from …

Impact Of Signal Timing Information On Safety And Efficiency Of Signalized Intersections, Anuj Sharma Jan 2011

Impact Of Signal Timing Information On Safety And Efficiency Of Signalized Intersections, Anuj Sharma

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Signalized intersections are provided in traffic networks to improve the safety and efficiency of vehicular and pedestrian movement. There are various measures under education, enforcement and engineering headings that are being attempted to improve safety and efficiency of operations at a signalized intersection. Provision of signal countdown timer, a timer showing the remaining red and green time in a phase, is one such measure and is commonly adopted in India. However, studies on effects of countdown timer under Indian traffic conditions are very scarce. Traffic heterogeneity and lack of lane discipline makes transferability of models developed in other countries (with …

Effects Of Solution Chemistry And Aging Time On Prion Protein Adsorption And Replication Of Soil-Bound Prions, Samuel E. Saunders, Qi Yuan, Jason C. Bartz, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt Jan 2011

Effects Of Solution Chemistry And Aging Time On Prion Protein Adsorption And Replication Of Soil-Bound Prions, Samuel E. Saunders, Qi Yuan, Jason C. Bartz, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Prion interactions with soil may play an important role in the transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and scrapie. Prions are known to bind to a wide range of soil surfaces, but the effects of adsorption solution chemistry and long-term soil binding on prion fate and transmission risk are unknown. We investigated HY TME prion protein (PrPSc) adsorption to soil minerals in aqueous solutions of phosphate buffered saline (PBS), sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and deionized water using western blotting. The replication efficiency of bound prions following adsorption in these solutions was also evaluated by protein misfolding cyclic amplification …

Transition From One-Dimensional Water To Ferroelectric Ice Within A Supramolecular Architecture, Hai-Xia Zhao, Xiang-Jian Kong, Hui Li, Yi-Chang Jin, La-Sheng Long, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Rong-Bin Huang, Lan-Sun Zheng Jan 2011

Transition From One-Dimensional Water To Ferroelectric Ice Within A Supramolecular Architecture, Hai-Xia Zhao, Xiang-Jian Kong, Hui Li, Yi-Chang Jin, La-Sheng Long, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Rong-Bin Huang, Lan-Sun Zheng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Ferroelectric materials are characterized by spontaneous electric polarization that can be reversed by inverting an external electric field. Owing to their unique properties, ferroelectric materials have found broad applications in microelectronics, computers, and transducers. Water molecules are dipolar and thus ferroelectric alignment of water molecules is conceivable when water freezes into special forms of ice. Although the ferroelectric ice XI has been proposed to exist on Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, evidence of a fully protonordered ferroelectric ice is still elusive. To date, existence of ferroelectric ice with partial ferroelectric alignment has been demonstrated only in thin films of ice grown …

Elastic Properties Of Poly(Vinyldene Fluoride) (Pvdf) Crystals: A Density Functional Theory Study, Yong Pei, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2011

Elastic Properties Of Poly(Vinyldene Fluoride) (Pvdf) Crystals: A Density Functional Theory Study, Yong Pei, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We computed structural and elastic properties of totally nine phases of poly(vinyldene fluoride) (PVDF) crystals using the density-functional theory (DFT) method with and without inclusion of the dispersion corrections. In addition to the four known crystalline forms, mechanic properties of five theoretically predicted crystalline forms of PVDF are also investigated. The all-trans form Ip exhibits the largest cohesive energy, bulk, and Young’s modulus among the nine crystalline forms. The DFT calculations suggest that the δ crystalline forms (IIIau, IIIpu, IIIpd, and IIIad) possess poor chain rigidity among the nine PVDF …

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The structural and electronic effects of isoelectronic substitution by Ag and Cu atoms on gold cluster anions in the size range between 13 and 15 atoms are studied using a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles density functional calculations. The most stable structures of the doped clusters are compared with those of the undoped Au clusters in the same size range. The joint experimental and theoretical study reveals a new C3v symmetric isomer for Au13 −, which is present in the experiment, but has hitherto not been recognized. The global minima of Au14 − and Au …

An Inexpensive High-Throughput Nmr Tube Cleaning Apparatus, Bo Zhang, James Hodgson, Walter Hancock, Robert Powers Jan 2011

An Inexpensive High-Throughput Nmr Tube Cleaning Apparatus, Bo Zhang, James Hodgson, Walter Hancock, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Large scale Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) tube cleaning is currently a bottleneck in high throughput NMR ligand affinity screens. Expensive alternatives include discarding the NMR tubes after a single use (~$2 to $8/tube), using commercial NMR tube cleaners (~$15K) or abandoning NMR tubes for flow probe technology (~$75K). Instead, we describe a relatively inexpensive (~ $400) and easily constructed apparatus that can clean 180 NMR tubes an hour while using a modest amount of solvent. The application of this apparatus significantly shortens the time to recycle NMR tubes while avoiding cross contaminations and tube damage.

Bacterial Protein Structures Reveal Phylum Dependent Divergence, Matthew D. Shortridge, Thomas Triplet, Peter Revesz, Mark A. Griep, Robert Powers Jan 2011

Bacterial Protein Structures Reveal Phylum Dependent Divergence, Matthew D. Shortridge, Thomas Triplet, Peter Revesz, Mark A. Griep, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Protein sequence space is vast compared to protein fold space. This raises important questions about how structures adapt to evolutionary changes in protein sequences. A growing trend is to regard protein fold space as a continuum rather than a series of discrete structures. From this perspective, homologous protein structures within the same functional classification should reveal a constant rate of structural drift relative to sequence changes. The clusters of orthologous groups (COG) classification system was used to annotate homologous bacterial protein structures in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The structures and sequences of proteins within each COG were compared against …

A Correlation Between Protein Function And Ligand Binding Profiles, Matthew D. Shortridge, Michael Bokemper, Jennifer C. Copeland, Jaime L. Stark, Robert Powers Jan 2011

A Correlation Between Protein Function And Ligand Binding Profiles, Matthew D. Shortridge, Michael Bokemper, Jennifer C. Copeland, Jaime L. Stark, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

We report that proteins with the same function bind the same set of small molecules from a standardized chemical library. This observation led to a quantifiable and rapidly adaptable method for protein functional analysis using experimentally-derived ligand binding profiles. Ligand binding is measured using a high-throughput NMR ligand affinity screen with a structurally diverse chemical library. The method was demonstrated using a set of 19 proteins with a range of functions. A statistically significant similarity in ligand binding profiles was only observed between the two functionally identical albumins and between the five functionally similar amylases. This new approach is independent …

We previously hypothesized that Staphylococcus epidermidis senses a diverse set of environmental and nutritional factors associated with biofilm formation through a modulation in the activity of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Herein, we report our further investigation of the impact of additional environmental stress factors on TCA cycle activity and provide a detailed description of our NMR methodology. S. epidermidis wild-type strain 1457 was treated with stressors that are associated with biofilm formation, a sub-lethal dose of tetracycline, 5% NaCl, 2% glucose and autoinducer-2 (AI-2). As controls and to integrate our current data with our previous study, 4% ethanol stress …

Evaluation And Comparison Of The Species-Specificity Of 3 Antiparvalbumin Igg Antibodies, Poi-Wah Lee, Julie A. Nordlee, Stef J. Koppelman, Joseph L. Baumert, Steve L. Taylor Jan 2011

Evaluation And Comparison Of The Species-Specificity Of 3 Antiparvalbumin Igg Antibodies, Poi-Wah Lee, Julie A. Nordlee, Stef J. Koppelman, Joseph L. Baumert, Steve L. Taylor

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Parvalbumin is a pan-allergen in fish and frogs that triggers IgE-mediated reactions in fish-allergic individuals. Previous studies demonstrated that antibodies raised against fish and frog parvalbumins displayed varying specificity for different fish species, and thus, the applicability of these antibodies for potential use in immunoassays to detect fish residues were limited. We aimed to determine the specificity of 3 IgG antibodies for various fish species. Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and IgG-immunoblotting were used to compare the reactivity of the polyclonal anticod parvalbumin antibody and the commercially available, monoclonal antifrog and monoclonal anticarp parvalbumin antibodies against raw muscle extracts of …

Foreword, From Holy Places And Pilgrimages: Essays On India, Robert H. Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This collection of twelve articles continues a long and rich body of information about pilgrimages. Written materials in the form of pamphlets, guidebooks, manuals, itineraries, and treatises about pilgrimages date from antiquity (see, e.g. the discussion in this volume by Rana Singh about ancient epics, pp. 15-20). Travelling to places regarded by worshippers as having extraordinary spiritual power is a phenomenon permeating all religious traditions so it is logical that it appears in various literary forms.
