Do "Clickers" Improve Student Engagement And Learning In Secondary Schools?, Andrew James Mankowski Jan 2011

Do "Clickers" Improve Student Engagement And Learning In Secondary Schools?, Andrew James Mankowski

Dissertations and Theses

There is a need in classrooms to engage students and maintain their interest in course content. A recent type of interactive technology, known as a "clicker," has shown potential to increase student engagement, performance, and participation in the classroom when used effectively. Peer instruction, a type of student to student interaction in which pairs or small groups of students discuss their answers to questions before responding, is often used in conjunction with clickers, and may account for the perceived effectiveness of these tools. The purpose of this study is to determine the clicker's effectiveness in increasing learning and increasing student …

The Binfords And Mort Publishing Company And The Development Of Regional Literature In Oregon, Jeremy Skinner

Dissertations and Theses

During the first half of the twentieth century there was a flourishing of publishers in the United States that specialized in books with content targeted for regional audiences. One of the largest regional publishers west of the Mississippi was the Binfords & Mort publishing company of Portland, Oregon. In 1930, Binfords & Mort began publishing works of fiction, history, poetry, children's literature, and natural history by Pacific Northwest authors with content focused on the Pacific Northwest. Between 1930 and 1984, when the Binford family sold the publishing company, Binfords & Mort published around one thousand titles, and became a one …

The Cultural Barriers To Integration Of Second Generation Muslims In Northern Italy, Joseph Anthony Migliore Jan 2011

The Cultural Barriers To Integration Of Second Generation Muslims In Northern Italy, Joseph Anthony Migliore

Dissertations and Theses

In this study, I examine the existing literature and carry out a qualitative exploration in order to formulate a better understanding of the dynamics that influence the lives of 2nd generation Italian Muslims. Although monumental social and political challenges remain in confronting integration of the Muslim population and for achieving greater acceptance of Islam within the Italian public sphere, the evidence suggests that the process for integration has slowly begun. Additionally, this study examines the intellectual framework of the existing literature which addresses the issues impacting Muslim integration in Northern Italy. This issue has induced new debates within Italy on …

High Mobility Group Protein 1 (Hmgb1) And Its Role As A Global Transcription Regulator In Response To Temperature Fluctuations In The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Victoria Martin Alla Jan 2011

High Mobility Group Protein 1 (Hmgb1) And Its Role As A Global Transcription Regulator In Response To Temperature Fluctuations In The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Victoria Martin Alla

Dissertations and Theses

As a study organism, annual killifish (Austrofundulus limnaeus) provide a well suited study system for examining the effects of environmental temperature fluctuations at the cellular level. A. limnaeus persist in the harsh high desert climate of the Maracaibo Basin, Venezuela where they live in small, ephemeral freshwater pools. Temperatures in these waters can vary as much as 20 degrees C daily and reach maximums of over 40 degrees C due to the semi-arid climate. Previous cDNA microarray studies on killifish revealed the mRNA pattern for High Mobility Group Protein 1 (HMGB1) to be strongly affected by temperature perturbations. Specifically, peaks …

Employment Discrimination Against Lgbt Utahns, Clifford Rosky, Christy Mallory, Jenni Smith, M.V Lee Badgett

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Utah does not have a statewide law that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment. This report gathers together all existing data on the prevalence of discrimination in Utah to examine how frequently lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Utahns experience employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and assess the likely impact of passing a statewide nondiscrimination law.

The report begins by analyzing the data collected through a 2010 survey conducted by Equality Utah, which is the state’s first survey on discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment. The data show …

Effects Of Linseed Meal On Growth And Reproductive Performance In Ruminants, Breanne Rose Ilse Jan 2011

Effects Of Linseed Meal On Growth And Reproductive Performance In Ruminants, Breanne Rose Ilse

Animal Sciences

Linseed meal (LSM) was fed to ovariectomized ewes exposed to estradiol 17-ß (E2) implants over time, and LSM was supplemented to beef cows during late gestation and early lactation to evaluate the estrogenic potential of the phytoestrogen secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) found in LSM. Forty-eight ovariectomized ewes were fed a diet containing 12.5% LSM for 0, 1, 7, or 14 d and implanted with estradiol-17ß (E2) for 0, 6, or 24 h before tissue collection. Uterine cellular proliferation, vascularity, and the expression of the angiogenic factors and their receptors were recorded. There was an interaction of LSM and E2 on uterine …

Time-Dependent Behavior Of Various Frp Composites For Structural Applications, Md. Fuad Hassan Khan Jan 2011

Time-Dependent Behavior Of Various Frp Composites For Structural Applications, Md. Fuad Hassan Khan

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This thesis represents the long-term behavior of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials for structural applications. FRP composites consist of high-strength fibers embedded in an epoxy resin. The long-term investigations include i) pultruded glass FRP (GFRP) beams subjected to sustained loads and cold temperature and ii) reinforced concrete beams strengthened with near-surface mounted (NSM) carbon FRP (CFRP) strips. For the first phase, test parameters include the variation of sustained intensities and temperature. The flexural behavior of the long-term beams is studied through a combined experimental and numerical approach, including load-carrying capacity, failure mode, creep response, and material degradation. Some material parameters …

The Infected Hip: A Treatment Algorithm, Bahar Adeli, Javad Parvizi Md Jan 2011

The Infected Hip: A Treatment Algorithm, Bahar Adeli, Javad Parvizi Md

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The management of periprosthetic joint infection following total joint arthroplasty is presently a major challenge to orthopedic surgeons. Despite various treatment options available, the two-stage revision procedure is most often chosen in North America because of a high success rate, especially in cases involving resistant organisms. Sometimes the use of antibiotics alone, irrigation with debridement, or a one-stage exchange may be a more appropriate treatment option. Various factors such as the status of a patient’s immune system, time of onset of the infection, as well as susceptibility of causative microorganism should be considered as they play an important role in …

Contribution Of Public Investments And Innovations To Total Factor Productivity, Anna Glazyrina Jan 2011

Contribution Of Public Investments And Innovations To Total Factor Productivity, Anna Glazyrina

Goods traded between the U.S. and its trading partners are disaggregated into three groups based on the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC). Results show that major factors affecting both U.S. export and import flows are distance and change in polity score. Also …

Quantifying Seasonal Variation In Physiological Condition Of Adult Franklin's Gull (Luecophaeus Pipixcan) During Nesting, Shawn Edward Weissenfluh Jan 2011

Quantifying Seasonal Variation In Physiological Condition Of Adult Franklin's Gull (Luecophaeus Pipixcan) During Nesting, Shawn Edward Weissenfluh

Biological Sciences

Understanding seasonal variation in adult physiological condition is important for developing hypotheses on how nest initiation, adult condition, chick development and recruitment are related in Franklin's gull and other migratory species of the northern plains. The purpose of this study was to profile physiological condition during the breeding season in nesting Franklin's gull (Luecophaeus pipixcan) adults. Physiological condition was quantified in nesting adults through four metrics: body measurements recorded from live-trapped birds, the corticosterone stress response measured from blood samples collected serially from live-trapped birds, and two measures of immune function (antimicrobial capacity of plasma from blood samples and heterophil/lymphocyte …

Negativing Invention, Jacob S. Sherkow Jan 2011

Negativing Invention, Jacob S. Sherkow

Articles & Chapters

Since 1952, the patent statute has forbidden courts from discriminating against, or “negativing,” inventions according to how they were made, be it “long toil and experimentation” or a “flash of genius.” Now, in addressing whether an invention is “obvious,” courts must only examine whether the invention was obvious according to the arts pertinent to that invention — the “analogous” rather than “nonanalogous” arts. This article shows that this dichotomy has actually promoted method-of-invention discrimination in patent law because the subjectivity of the analogous art inquiry has increasingly “analogized” wide fields of prior art as technology has progressed. This, in turn, …
