Endoscopic Sheath Having A Biomimetic Retractor, Ashraf Samy Youssef

An endoscopic sheath having a biomimetic retractor for retracting organs and tissues in the body. The inflatable retractor comprises an inflatable balloon configured to retract specific organs and tissues at the site of the endoscopic procedure, with attached inflation and deflation means. In one embodiment, the inflatable retractor is attached to an outer tube or cannula. A second, inner cannula is placed within the outer cannula and attached thereto by a plurality of substantially elastic strands. The strands center the inner cannula while allowing it to be manipulated in any direction.

Proper cellular functionand development depends on intrinsic signals and extracellular environmental cues. The interplay of these environmental influences and intracellular dynamics determine cellular ectivity including migration, differentiation and the manner in whihc it interacts with surrounding cells. An object of this invention invloves a way to mofigy cellular activity by gene insertion. Another object of this invention is the application of specially modified cells for therapeutic and research applications. Perinatal palliative care (PPC) is an emerging model of care that provides supportive services to families anticipating fetal or neonatal demise. Clinician reported practice barriers, their perspectives of PPC and confidence in caring for patients requiring PPC are unknown. The aim of this research is to fill a gap in understanding clinician perspectives, perceived practice barriers and reported confidence to providing PPC. A cross sectional survey design using the Perinatal Palliative Care Perceptions and Barriers Scale© was administered using a Web-based tool. We calculate simultaneously the radio and optical luminosity evolutions of quasars, and the distribution in radio loudness R defined as the ratio of radio and optical luminosities, using a flux-limited data set containing 636 quasars with radio and optical fluxes from White et al. We first note that when dealing with multi-variate data it is imperative to first determine the true correlations among the variables, not those introduced by the observational selection effects, before obtaining the individual distributions of the variables. A micro embolus is a plug of clot, fat, air or other material not normally found in blood that moves with flowing blood between two points in the circulation. Micro emboli have been detected with pathologies such as carotid artery disease, atrial fibrillation and also in association with implanted vascular devices, such as prosthetic heart valves or left ventricular assist devices. Conventional method for detecting the presence of emboli is done manually which is a very tedious procedure. Spindt-type field-emission cathodes for use in electric propulsion (EP) systems having self-assembling nanostructures that can repeatedly regenerate damaged cathode emitter nanotips. A nanotip is created by applying a negative potential near the surface of a liquefied base metal to create a Taylor cone converging to a nanotip, and solidifying the Taylor cone for use as a field-emission cathode. When the nanotip of the Taylor cone becomes sufficiently blunted or damaged to affect its utility, the base metal is re-liquefied by application of a heat source, a negative potential is reapplied to the surface of the base metal to recreate the …

Emerging data indicate that rice consumption may lead to potentially harmful arsenic exposure. However, few human data are available, and virtually none exist for vulnerable periods such as pregnancy. Here we document a positive association between rice consumption and urinary arsenic excretion, a biomarker of recent arsenic exposure, in 229 pregnant women. At a 6-mo prenatal visit, we collected a urine sample and 3-d dietary record for water, fish/seafood, and rice. We also tested women's home tap water for arsenic, which we combined with tap water consumption to estimate arsenic exposure through water. Women who reported rice intake (n …

Transcriptional activity of entire genes in chloroplasts is usually assayed by run-on analyses. To determine not only the overall intensity of transcription of a gene, but also the rate of transcription from a particular promoter, we created the Reverse RNase Protection Assay (RePro): in-organello run-on transcription coupled to RNase protection to define distinct transcript ends during transcription. We demonstrate successful application of RePro in plastid promoter analysis and transcript 3' end processing.

Developments in the area of flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) of a small size and with limited range. This has lead to a great deal of interest in biomimetric designs based on flapping wing flyers, including the North American Hawkmoth (Manduca Sexta). By utilizing high speed photography and photogrammetry the dynamic flapping of the wing can be characterized for comparison with mathematical models, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA).To successfully utilize high speed image capture, a method of successfully digitizing many data points in a short period of time needs to be developed. Despite the increasing importance of ruthenium in numerous technological applications, e.g., catalysis and electronic devices, experimental and computational data on its binary alloys are sparse. In particular, data are scant on those binary systems believed to be phase-separating. We performed a comprehensive study of ruthenium binary systems with the 28 transition metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict novel unsuspected compounds in 7 of the 16 binary systems previously believed to be phase-separating and in two of the three systems reported with only a high-temperature σ phase. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) are minute acoustic responses originating from the cochlea as a result of an external acoustic stimulus and are recorded using a sensitive microphone placed in the ear canal. OAEs are acquired by synchronous stimulation with an acoustic click or tone burst and recording of the post-stimulus responses. This method of acquiring OAEs is known as transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEAOE) and is commonly used in clinics as a screening method for hearing and cochlear functionality in infants. Recently, a novel method of acquiring OAEs utilizing a swept-tone, or chirp, as a stimulus was developed. This method used …
