Can Laypersons Ordained Online As Universal Life Church Ministers, Or The Like, Officiate At Weddings? In Some States, The Answer Is No, Joanna L. Grossman Nov 2011

Can Laypersons Ordained Online As Universal Life Church Ministers, Or The Like, Officiate At Weddings? In Some States, The Answer Is No, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

As I discussed in Part One of this series of columns, valid marriages require a license, witnesses, and solemnization by a person who has been granted the legal—not simply the religious—authority to preside over weddings. Moreover, during the wedding, the officiant must obtain the express consent of the parties to marry and then declare them to be married. ...

In this column, I will discuss cases from several states that have invalidated marriages that were solemnized only by ministers ordained through the mail or online, with a special focus on New York, where the validity of such marriages is especially …

Power Control And Security Games For Wireless Communication Networks, Bo Liang Nov 2011

Power Control And Security Games For Wireless Communication Networks, Bo Liang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, game theoretic analysis of wireless communication networks has been performed. Game theory provides valuable tools can be used to solve problem of conflict and cooperation in wireless communication networks. Game theoretic tools can be applied to multiple layers of wireless networks. First, we consider power control issues at the physical layer of wireless networks. A game theoretic analysis for resource allocation policies in fading interference channels in the presence of quality of service (QoS) constraints is performed. We model a two player non-cooperative power control game and assume that both transmitters and receivers know the channel side …

A Comparative Study On The Polyphenolic Content, Antibacterial Activity And Antioxidant Capacity Of Different Solvent Extracts Of Brassica Oleracea Vegetables, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Shilpi Gupta

Articles

Brassica vegetables are rich in polyphenols, flavonoids and glucosinolates. Investigation was undertaken to optimise the best solvents among 60% ethanol, acetone and methanol for the extraction of polyphenols from Brassica vegetables. Furthermore, different properties such as antibacterial activity and antioxidant capacity were also investigated. Results showed that a 60% methanolic extract showed the highest total phenolic content which was 23.6, 20.4 and 18.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) g−1 extract for broccoli, Brussels sprouts and white cabbage, respectively. The hydroxybenzoic acid content of various solvent extracts ranged from 5.86 to 8.91 GAE g−1 extract for broccoli, 2.70 to 5.44 GAE …

Bonding Of Polydimethylsiloxane Microfluidics To Silicon-Based Sensors, Long-Fang Tsai, William C. Dahlquist, Seunghyun Kim, Gregory P. Nordin Nov 2011

Bonding Of Polydimethylsiloxane Microfluidics To Silicon-Based Sensors, Long-Fang Tsai, William C. Dahlquist, Seunghyun Kim, Gregory P. Nordin

Faculty Publications

We investigate bonding polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to silicon using a thin (~2μm) intermediate adhesive layer stamped onto a PDMS piece prior to bonding. In particular, we compare as adhesive layers Sylgard 184 and 182 curing agents and a UV curable adhesive (NOA 75). We examine the effect of both curing temperature and duration on curing agent bond strength. Bond strengths for the different adhesives are determined by measuring the average burst pressure at a PDMS-silicon interface using a PDMS test design. We find that Sylgard 184 curing agent gives the highest bond strength with burst pressure of 700 kPa or more …

Investigating A Win, Win Situation: Delivering Quality Swimming Experiences For Children In Local Primary Schools Within The Gippsland Region, Through Teacher Education., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

The goals established at the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (December, 2008) were “about equity and social justice and improved learning outcomes for our most disadvantaged and isolated students” (Ewing, 2010, p. 127). A commitment to action in achieving these goals included: promoting world-class curriculum and assessment; and improving educational outcomes for the disadvantaged young Australians, especially those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. A large percentage of the Gippsland region population comprises of socio-economically disadvantaged. Implementation of the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area within Australian rural primary schools and specifically swimming and water safety often presents …

Differences In Aggression As A Relationship Between Sex And Levels Of Video Game Playing, Kunal Puri Nov 2011

Differences In Aggression As A Relationship Between Sex And Levels Of Video Game Playing, Kunal Puri

Theses

Video games have grown into a multibillion-dollar industry over the past 40 years. A number of studies have been carried out to explain the relationship between playing video games and the different levels of aggression it generates. This pilot study examines the differences in aggression present in males and females following video game playing. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between the amount of time spent playing video games and the type of video games played by both males and females with the amount of aggression it stimulates across different sex. The study uses theories like …

Additive Functions In Boolean Models Of Gene Regulatory Network Modules, Christian Darabos, Ferdinando Ferdinando Di Cunto, Marco Tomassini, Jason H. Moore Nov 2011

Additive Functions In Boolean Models Of Gene Regulatory Network Modules, Christian Darabos, Ferdinando Ferdinando Di Cunto, Marco Tomassini, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Gene-on-gene regulations are key components of every living organism. Dynamical abstract models of genetic regulatory networks help explain the genome’s evolvability and robustness. These properties can be attributed to the structural topology of the graph formed by genes, as vertices, and regulatory interactions, as edges. Moreover, the actual gene interaction of each gene is believed to play a key role in the stability of the structure. With advances in biology, some effort was deployed to develop update functions in Boolean models that include recent knowledge. We combine real-life gene interaction networks with novel update functions in a Boolean model. We …

Response To The David Segal Article, November 19, 2011, In New York Times, Martin J. Katz Nov 2011

Response To The David Segal Article, November 19, 2011, In New York Times, Martin J. Katz

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

As David Segal’s November 19 article accurately reflects, the legal market is changing. Clients are no longer willing to foot the bill for young lawyers’ training, and thus law firms are increasingly looking to the law schools to produce practice-ready graduates.

The good news is that there are clear solutions to the problem, and they are already in motion. A report published in 2007 by the Carnegie Foundation entitled "Education Lawyers" identified precisely the problem described in Mr. Segal’s article and suggested that law schools should address it by developing courses that educate law students on three levels: knowledge, practice …

Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Jute Mat Reinforced Epoxy Composites, Sadaf S.M, Siddik M, Ahsan Q Nov 2011

Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Jute Mat Reinforced Epoxy Composites, Sadaf S.M, Siddik M, Ahsan Q

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Cellulose jute fibre offers a number of benefits as reinforcement for synthetic polymers since it has a high specific strength and stiffness, low hardness, relatively low density and biodegradability. To reduce moisture uptake and hence to improve the mechanical properties of the composites, bleached jute mats were incorporated as reinforcing elements in the epoxy matrix. Composites at varying volume fractions and different orientations of jute mat were fabricated by hot compression machine under specific pressures and temperatures. Tensile, flexure, impact and water absorption tests of composites were conducted. Jute mat oriented at (0 ± 45–90)° composites showed reduced strength compared …

Nutrient Composition Of Artocarpus Champeden And Its Hybrid (Nanchem) In Negara Brunei Darussalam, Lim L.B.L, Chieng H.I, Wimmer F.L Nov 2011

Nutrient Composition Of Artocarpus Champeden And Its Hybrid (Nanchem) In Negara Brunei Darussalam, Lim L.B.L, Chieng H.I, Wimmer F.L

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The flesh and seeds of ripened and unripened Artocarpus champeden and its ripened hybrid (Nanchem) were analyzed for their moisture, ash, crude fibre, crude protein, crude fat, total carbohydrate, energy and mineral content. Generally, unripened A. champeden which is always treated and cooked as a vegetable contains higher amounts of moisture, ash, crude fibre and crude protein for its flesh than ripened A. champeden and Nanchem. Ripened A. champeden and Nanchemhave higher total carbohydrates and energy content than the unripe fruit. Similarly, the unripened A. champeden seed has more nutritional components in terms of moisture, ash, crude fibre, crude protein, …
