A Theoretical Study On The Rank’S Dependence With Electric Size Of The Inverse Finite Element Matrix For Large-‐Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Haixin Liu, Dan Jiao Nov 2011

A Theoretical Study On The Rank’S Dependence With Electric Size Of The Inverse Finite Element Matrix For Large-‐Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Haixin Liu, Dan Jiao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The rank of the inverse finite-element matrix is theoretically studied for 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D electrodynamic problems. We find that the rank of the inverse finite-element matrix is a constant irrespective of electric size for 1-D electrodynamic problems. For 2-D electrodynamic problems, the rank grows very slowly with electric size as square root of the logarithm of the electric size of the problem. For 3-D electrodynamic problems, the rank scales linearly with the electric size. The findings of this work are both theoretically proved and numerically verified. They are applicable to problems with inhomogeneous materials and arbitrarily shaped structures.

A Theoretical Study On The Rank Of The Integral Operators For Large-‐Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Wenwen Chai, Dan Jiao Nov 2011

A Theoretical Study On The Rank Of The Integral Operators For Large-‐Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Wenwen Chai, Dan Jiao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We theoretically prove that the minimal rank of the interaction between two separated geometry blocks in an integral-equation based analysis of general three-dimensional objects, for a prescribed error bound, scales linearly with the electric size of the block diameter. We thus prove the existence of the error-bounded low-rank representation of both surface and volume based integral operators for electrodynamic analysis, irrespective of electric size and scatterer shape. The theoretical analysis developed in this work permits an analytical study of the minimal rank for a prescribed accuracy, for arbitrarily shaped objects with arbitrary electric sizes. Numerical experiments have verified its validity. …

Does Gender Bias Influence Awards Given By Societies?, Mary Anne Holmes, Pranoti Asher, John Farrington, Rana Fine, Margaret S. Leinen, Phoebe Leboy

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

AGU is a participant in a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)–funded project called Advancing Ways of Awarding Recognition in Disciplinary Societies (AWARDS), which seeks to examine whether gender bias affects selection of recipients of society awards. AGU is interested in learning why there is a higher proportion of female recipients of service and education awards over the past 2 decades. Combined with a lower rate of receipt of research awards, these results suggest that implicit (subconscious) bias in favor of male candidates still influences awardee selection.

Associations Between Physical Activity And Submaximal Cardiorespiratory And Pulmonary Responses In Men, John C. Sieverdes, Xuemei Sui, Steven N. Blair Nov 2011

Associations Between Physical Activity And Submaximal Cardiorespiratory And Pulmonary Responses In Men, John C. Sieverdes, Xuemei Sui, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Background: Habitual physical activity (PA) is associated with higher cardiorespiratory fitness values, but additional information is needed on the contributions of specific types and amounts of PA. Therefore the main aim of this study was to analyze the heart and lung function of a large cohort of men and compare these outcomes with various modes and volumes of PA.

Methods: We used data from 30,594 men from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study who were categorized into sedentary, swimmer, walker, and runner groups using self-report PA data collected during 1970-2005. Additional PA categories using MET-minutes/week were used to group men into …

Privileging Peer Review: Implications For Undergraduates, Amy E. Mark Nov 2011

Privileging Peer Review: Implications For Undergraduates, Amy E. Mark

Communications in Information Literacy

Librarians and teaching faculty privilege peer review articles out of ideals rooted in academic culture more then for pedagogical reasons. Undergraduates would find greater benefit in the opportunity to search and critique sources related to their personal and creative interests as well as relevant to academic research projects. Librarians can adopt the role of change-agents by engaging relevant teaching faculty in discussions about the goal of research assignments relative to peer review literature. Framing this discussion is Paulo Freire's theory of banking information discussed in Pedagogy of the Oppressed (2000).

Information Literacy For Multiple Disciplines: Toward A Campus-Wide Integration Model At Indiana University, Bloomington, Brian Winterman, Carrie Donovan, Rachel Slough Nov 2011

Information Literacy For Multiple Disciplines: Toward A Campus-Wide Integration Model At Indiana University, Bloomington, Brian Winterman, Carrie Donovan, Rachel Slough

Communications in Information Literacy

Within disciplines are a set of shared values and thought processes that students must master in order to become participants of that discipline. Information literacy as defined by the ACRL is a set of standards and principles that can apply to all disciplines. In order to produce information literate undergraduates in a given discipline, information literacy standards must be integrated with the values and processes of the discipline. In this study, librarians partnered with faculty in gender studies and molecular biology to integrate information literacy with courses in those areas. Student performance and attitudes improved as a result of the …

A Time-Efficient Method For Accurate T1 Mapping Of The Human Brain, Yung-Yeh Chang Nov 2011

A Time-Efficient Method For Accurate T1 Mapping Of The Human Brain, Yung-Yeh Chang

Theses and Dissertations

The signal resulting from the IR-FSE sequence has been thoroughly analyzed in order to improve the accuracy of quantitative T1 mapping of the human brain. Several optimized post-processing algorithms have been studied and compared in terms of their T1 mapping accuracy. The modified multipoint two-parameter fitting method was found to produce less underestimation compared to the traditional multipoint three-parameter fitting method, and therefore, to result in a smaller T1 estimation error. Two correction methods were proposed to reduce the underestimation problem which is commonly seen in IR-FSE sequences used for measuring T1, especially when a large turbo factor is used. …

Orbital Separation Amplification In Fragile Binaries With Evolved Components, K. B. Johnston, Terry D. Oswalt Nov 2011

Orbital Separation Amplification In Fragile Binaries With Evolved Components, K. B. Johnston, Terry D. Oswalt

Publications

The secular stellar mass-loss causes an amplification of the orbital separation in fragile, common proper motion, binary systems with separations of the order of 1000 A.U. In these systems, companions evolve as two independent coeval stars as they experience negligible mutual tidal interactions or mass transfer. We present models for how post-main sequence mass-loss statistically distorts the frequency distribution of separations in fragile binaries. These models demonstrate the expected increase in orbital seapration resulting from stellar mass-loss, as well as a perturbation of associated orbital parameters. Comparisons between our models and observations resulting from the Luyten survey of wide visual …

Format As A False Judge Of Credibility: Messages From Librarians And Faculty And Student Responses, Amy E. Mark

Communications in Information Literacy

The purpose of this case study is to explore how students make sense of and respond to messages about information in higher education. This study identifies the messages students in higher education receive about information gathering, conducting research, and the credibility and authority of information sources. This research revealed that students are receiving the message from faculty that format is a stand-in for credibility. Research to date focuses on how to steer students to information privileged by the academy: academic, peer reviewed articles, and books. The voice of students is often absent. This study employs the critical framework of Paulo …

Supplementing A Librarian's Information Literacy Toolkit With Textbooks: A Scan Of Basic Communication Course Texts, Melissa A. Gains, Richard A. Stoddart

Communications in Information Literacy

This inquiry subjectively examines selected basic communication textbooks for information literacy concepts from the communication discipline point of view. Librarians can build on these concepts in library skills instruction sessions for first-year communication students. This analysis reveals that communication textbook authors are addressing information literacy concepts and standards with content, exercises, examples, and most importantly, context, and they are often utilizing their own discipline-specific terminology to do so. Since finding, using, and evaluating information is a cornerstone of communication education, and because the most successful information literacy efforts result from learning its tenets in a variety of contexts, librarians supporting …
