Criteria For The Observation Of Strong-Field Photoelectron Holography, T. Marchenko, Y. Huismans, K. J. Schafer, M. J.J. Vrakking

Photoelectron holography is studied experimentally and computationally using the ionization of ground-state xenon atoms by intense near-infrared radiation. A strong dependence of the occurrence of the holographic pattern on the laser wavelength and intensity is observed, and it is shown that the observation of the hologram requires that the ponderomotive energy Up is substantially larger than the photon energy. The holographic interference is therefore favored by longer wavelengths and higher laser intensities. Our results indicate that the tunneling regime is not a necessary condition for the observation of the holographic pattern, which can be observed under the conditions formally attributed …

Critical Point Symmetries In Deformed Odd-A Nuclei, Yu Zhang, Feng Pan, Yu Xin Liu, J. P. Draayer

A scheme that elucidates the nature of critical point symmetries in deformed odd-A nuclei by linking them to critical point symmetries of neighboring even-even nuclei is introduced. Specifically, a new symmetry, called SX(3), is advanced that shows primary characteristics of an assumed strong-coupling limit for odd-A systems. It is found that the SX(3) symmetry can be used to identify the soft collective structures in odd-A system. A preliminary application of the new scheme to describe the lowest positive parity bands of 193Ir is also shown. © 2011 American Physical Society.

A Novel Mutation In The Hsd17b10 Gene Of A 10-Year-Old Boy With Refractory Epilepsy, Choreoathetosis And Learning Disability, Laurie H. Seaver, Xue-Ying He, Keith Abe, Tina Cowan, Gregory M. Enns, Lawrence Sweetman, Manfred Philipp, Sansan Lee, Mazhar Malik, Song-Yu Yang

Hydroxysteroid (17beta) dehydrogenase 10 (HSD10) is a mitochondrial multifunctional enzyme encoded by the HSD17B10 gene. Missense mutations in this gene result in HSD10 deficiency, whereas a silent mutation results in mental retardation, X-linked, syndromic 10 (MRXS10). Here we report a novel missense mutation found in the HSD17B10 gene, namely c.194T>C transition (rs104886492), brought about by the loss of two forked methyl groups of valine 65 in the HSD10 active site. The affected boy, who possesses mutant HSD10 (p.V65A), has a neurological syndrome with metabolic derangements, choreoathetosis, refractory epilepsy and learning disability. We investigate a lattice model for Euclidean quantum gravity based on discretization of the Palatini formulation of General Relativity. Using Monte Carlo simulation we show that while a naive approach fails to lead to a vacuum state consistent with the emergence of classical spacetime, this problem may be evaded if the lattice action is supplemented by an appropriate counter term. In this new model we find regions of the parameter space which admit a ground state which can be interpreted as (Euclidean) de Sitter space.

Cognitive Radio Transceiver For Dispersed Spectrum Utilization, Hasari Celebi, Huseyin Arslan

In accordance with the present invention, a system and method that exploits the efficiency of the spectrum utilization is provided. The proposed technique, which is referred to as dispersed spectrum utilization, is based on the idea of transmitting the information over multiple dispersed bands in contrast to the current wireless communication systems which transmit the signal over a single band. A cognitive radio transceiver is developed for the implementation of this dispersed spectrum utilization technique.

Dual-Feed Series Microstrip Patch Array, Thomas Weller, Bojana Zivanovic

A sub-array of slot-coupled microstrip antennas fed using microstrip lines on an opposing substrate. Also provided is an omni-directional antenna comprised of six of the sub-arrays arranged in a hexagonal fashion. The gain of the antenna is ˜6 dB with a 3 dB elevation beam width of ˜30 degrees. The design provides constant beam angle over frequency, which is important for frequency-hopping applications, and the potential to add beam control to mitigate jamming in different sectors.

The invention is comprised of a methodology implemented into a software tool that allows forensic fire debris analysts to search data from a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis against the contents of a database/library containing GC-MS data from commercially available ignitable liquids to rapidly find the best match in the database library. Commercially available ignitable liquids are generally complex mixtures of hydrocarbon-based materials. The software uses a summation of all the ions generated in the mass spectral measurements on the chromatographed components of the ignitable liquid, a summed-ion spectrum. Provided are methods for the solubilization of cellulose into soluble sugars without the need for high temperatures, high pressures, strong acid solutions, and/or added water. The produced sugars can be fermented into ethanol. In one embodiment, the method comprises contacting a cellulose-containing material with a solid acid material and agitating the cellulose-containing material and the solid acid material for a time sufficient to produce an aqueous solution comprising a quantity of soluble sugars.
