Review Of The Conduct Of Inquiry In International Relations, Daniel Mcarthur Nov 2011

Review Of The Conduct Of Inquiry In International Relations, Daniel Mcarthur

Education and Culture

Book reviews in this journal usually proceed by considering the value of the book in question for Dewey scholarship. In this case I would rather say that this book is of interest to Dewey Scholars. Jackson's general project is heavily informed by Dewey's pluralistic brand of pragmatism. As Jackson notes “Dewey's Logic... stand[s] firmly in the tradition leading to this book” (216). Dewey scholars will greet Jackson's extension of this approach to the study of international relations warmly.

Common Ground With A Common Faith: Dewey’S Idea Of The “Religious”, Bradley Baurain Nov 2011

Common Ground With A Common Faith: Dewey’S Idea Of The “Religious”, Bradley Baurain

Education and Culture

In A Common Faith, Dewey rejects organized religion and belief in the supernatural, instead arguing for an authentically “religious” attitude which this interpretive essay analyzes in terms of four propositions: (1) Knowledge is unified. (2) Knowledge is democratic. (3) The pursuit of moral ideals requires moral faith. (4) The authority for moral ideals is experience as explored via inquiry. The author responds from the perspective of his own religious faith and outlines conceptual relationships with modern spirituality in education writers. The common ground is that the “religious” must be seen as a significant way of being and becoming in education.

Dewey’S Naturalistic Metaphysics: Expostulations And Replies, Randy L. Friedman Nov 2011

Dewey’S Naturalistic Metaphysics: Expostulations And Replies, Randy L. Friedman

Education and Culture

Critics of Dewey’s metaphysics point to his dismissal of any philosophy which locates ideals in a realm beyond experience. However, Dewey’s sustained critique of dualistic philosophies is but a first step in his reconstruction and recovery of the function of the metaphysical. Detaching the discussion of values from inquiry, whether scientific, philosophical or educational, produces the same end as relegating values to a transcendent realm that is beyond ordinary human discourse. Dewey’s naturalistic metaphysics supports his progressive educational philosophy. The duty of education is grounded in its service to democracy; it must help students develop the ability to express, discuss, …

What Good Is Growth? Reconsidering Dewey On The Ends Of Education, R.W. Hildreth Nov 2011

What Good Is Growth? Reconsidering Dewey On The Ends Of Education, R.W. Hildreth

Education and Culture

One of the most persistent criticisms of John Dewey is his failure to provide definite ends for education. This essay reconstructs Dewey’s educational thought to provide more guidance on the nature of educational ends. Rather than impose external ends and a rigid curriculum, Dewey provides evaluative criteria so that citizens themselves can assess the educational and democratic value of any practice, curricula or institution. The political implications of this position are profound. It pushes away from expert driven models of educational authority and towards empirically grounded deliberative processes to guide educational practice and policy.

Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro Nov 2011

Political Goals And Social Ideals: Dewey, Democracy, And The Emergence Of The Turkish Republic, Charles Dorn, Doris A. Santoro

Education and Culture

Most historical scholarship on John Dewey’s 1924 educational mission to Turkey has focused on the degree to which the educator and philosopher’s recommendations were actually implemented. By bringing the disciplinary lenses of history and philosophy to bear on Dewey’s mission, this collaborative study differs from previous work by illuminating the disjuncture between Dewey’s conception of democratic localism as essential to an educational system in a vibrant democracy (a social ideal) and Turkish officials’ view of centralized, formal education as a means to promulgate a homogeneous, modern, secular and democratic identity for their new nation-state (a political goal).

A Network Conditions Estimator For Voice Over Ip Objective Quality Assessment, Carlos Daniel Nocito Nov 2011

A Network Conditions Estimator For Voice Over Ip Objective Quality Assessment, Carlos Daniel Nocito

Open Access Theses

Objective quality evaluation is a key element for the success of the emerging Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies. Although there are extensive economic incentives for the convergence of voice, data, and video networks, packet networks such as the Internet have inherent incompatibilities with the transport of real time services. Under this paradigm, network planners and administrators are interested in ongoing mechanisms to measure and ensure the quality of these real time services. Objective quality assessment algorithms can be broadly divided into a) intrusive (methods that require a reference signal), and b) non intrusive (methods that do not require a known …

Nuclear Factor-Κb Activation In Schwann Cells Regulates Regeneration And Re-Myelination, Paul D. Morton Nov 2011

Nuclear Factor-Κb Activation In Schwann Cells Regulates Regeneration And Re-Myelination, Paul D. Morton

Open Access Dissertations

Schwann cells (SCs) are crucial for peripheral nerve development and regeneration; however, the intrinsic regulatory mechanisms governing post-injury responses are poorly understood. Activation and deacetylation of nuclear factor-κB (NF- κB) in SCs have been implicated as prerequisites for peripheral nerve myelination. Using GFAP-IκBα-dn mice, in which NF- κB transcriptional activation is inhibited in SCs, we found no discernable differences in the quantity or structure of myelinated axons in adult facial nerves. Following crush injury, axonal regeneration was impaired at 31 days and greatly improved at 65 days in GFAP-IκBα-dn mutants. Compact re-myelination and sensory fiber organization were significantly compromised at …

Directed Evolution Of Adeno-Associated Virus For Enhanced Gene Delivery And Gene Targeting In Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Prashanth Asuri, Melissa Bartel, Tandis Vazin, Jae-Hyung Jang, Tiffany Wong, David Schaffer Nov 2011

Directed Evolution Of Adeno-Associated Virus For Enhanced Gene Delivery And Gene Targeting In Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Prashanth Asuri, Melissa Bartel, Tandis Vazin, Jae-Hyung Jang, Tiffany Wong, David Schaffer

Bioengineering

Efficient approaches for the precise genetic engineering of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can enhance both basic and applied stem cell research. Adenoassociated virus (AAV) vectors are of particular interest for their capacity to mediate efficient gene delivery to and gene targeting in various cells. However, natural AAV serotypes offer only modest transduction of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells (hESCs and hiPSCs), which limits their utility for efficiently manipulating the hPSC genome. Directed evolution is a powerful means to generate viral vectors with novel capabilities, and we have applied this approach to create a novel AAV variant with …

Malian Thick Sorghum And Millet Porridges Decrease Hunger Success Story, Intsormil Nov 2011

Malian Thick Sorghum And Millet Porridges Decrease Hunger Success Story, Intsormil

USAID Mali Mission Awards

Malians often experience hunger at the end of the dry season when most of the sorghum and millet grain from the previous crop has already been consumed. A study was recently conducted by the INTSORMIL/IER Project to examine thick sorghum/millet porridge consumption related to preference and satiation (lack of a hungry feeling) in the Sikasso, Segou and Mopti regions of Mali. This was part of a larger study to understand the effect of thick porridges, and delayed glucose delivery to the body, on satiety and overall food consumption. The satiety study was designed so that participants consumed as much tô …

Value-Added Granulated Organic Fertilizer And Process For Producing The Same, Mark S. Reiter, Tommy C. Daniel Nov 2011

Value-Added Granulated Organic Fertilizer And Process For Producing The Same, Mark S. Reiter, Tommy C. Daniel

Patents Granted

A value-added granulated organic fertilizer produced from poultry litter and biosolids using agglomeration techniques with a pin mixer is described. The granulated organic fertilizer includes granules biosolids, a nitrification inhibitor, such as dicyandiamide, and a binding agent, such as lignosulfonate, urea formaldehyde, or water. The nitrogen concentration of the granulated organic fertilizer is increased by being fortified with urea. The poultry litter and biosolids formulated into the granulated organic fertilizer aid in flowability, storage, and spreading, while value-added plant nutrient ingredients provide an environmentally safer fertilizer than fresh poultry litter, municipal biosolids and/or many commercially available products commonly used in …
