Electronic Structure And Energetics Of Tetragonal Srcuo2 And Its High-Pressure Superstructure Phase, Jianwei Wang, Zsolt Rak, Fuxiang Zhang, Rodney C. Ewing, Udo Becker Nov 2011

Electronic Structure And Energetics Of Tetragonal Srcuo2 And Its High-Pressure Superstructure Phase, Jianwei Wang, Zsolt Rak, Fuxiang Zhang, Rodney C. Ewing, Udo Becker

Faculty Publications

First-principles calculations have been used to investigate the electronic structure and energetics of the simple tetragonal SrCuO2 (P4/mmm) and its high-pressure tetragonal superstructure (P4/mmm). Based on the calculations, the high-pressure phase is metastable as compared with the low pressure tetragonal phase, with an energy difference of 0.13eV per SrCuO 2 formula unit. The energy barrier to the transition from the superstructure to the simple tetragonal structure is 0.24eV at 7GPa; thus, high temperatures are required to synthesize the latter. Among the possible structural configurations resulting from the partially occupied oxygen site in the superstructure phase, the most stable structure has …

Walking Out On The Meaning: Dedication Day 2011, John M. Rudy Nov 2011

Walking Out On The Meaning: Dedication Day 2011, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I am a nerd. Last year on November 19th I was stuck in Las Vegas, attending the NAI conference (the same one Jake and I have been grousing about for the last two weeks). This was the first Dedication Day event I had missed since first coming to Gettysburg in 2003. I was upset. I was disconsolate. I trudged the strip dejected. I toured the Atomic Testing Museum, which was fascinating but unfulfilling. I am one of those dorks who doesn't understand how anyone can schedule anything other than a trip to Gettysburg on November the 19th. The glitz of …

Stratigraphic evidence is found for two coseismic subsidence events that underlie a floodplain 20 km south of Padang, West Sumatra along the Mentawai segment (0.5°S–0.3°S) of the Sunda subduction zone. Each earthquake is marked by a sharp soil‐mud contact that represents a sudden change from mangrove to tidal flat. The earthquakes occurred about 4000 and 3000 cal years B.P. based on radiocarbon ages of detrital plant fragments and seeds. The absence of younger paleoseismic evidence suggests that late Holocene relative sea level fall left the floodplain too high for an earthquake to lower it into the intertidal zone. Our results …

Living Well: The Value Of Teaching Place, Catherine M. English

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation is a teaching memoir that examines the implementation of a place conscious pedagogy as a means to teach sustainable living practices into a secondary English classroom in a rural Nebraska school. It is framed upon the premise of instilling five senses of place consciousness into students as defined by Haas and Nachtigal (1998) including living well in community or a sense of belonging; living well spiritually or a sense of connection; living well economically or a sense of worth; living well politically or a sense of civic involvement; and living well ecologically or a sense of place. I …

ETSU Faculty Works

Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD), a disorder of the NADPH oxidase system, results in phagocyte functional defects and subsequent infections with bacterial and fungal pathogens (such as Aspergillus species and Candida albicans). Deletions and missense, frameshift, or nonsense mutations in the gp91 phox gene (also termed CYBB), located in the Xp21.1 region of the X chromosome, are associated with the most common form of CGD. When larger X-chromosomal deletions occur, including the XK gene deletion, a so-called "Contiguous Gene Deletion Syndrome" may result. The contiguous gene deletion syndrome is known to associate the Kell phenotype/McLeod syndrome with diseases such as X-linked …

Policy-Performance Gap, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2011

Policy-Performance Gap, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The diagnostics of Pakistan’s worsening economic conditions are quite well known. The vital signs of the health of the economy i.e. growth, inflation, employment, fiscal balance, current account balance, indebtedness, etc appear worrisome.

The persistence of an ailing economy sapping the energies of the people raises a fundamental question: are the policy prescriptions to rectify the situation themselves deficient or is the dosage administered, i.e. the phasing, sequencing, mixture and timing of the policies, inadequate, or is ‘patient management’— the implementation of these policies — poor?

A dispassionate analysis would reveal that it is a combination of all three elements …

Publications and Research

Background Abnormal white matter development may disrupt integration within neural circuits, causing particular impairments in higher-order behaviours. In autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), white matter alterations may contribute to characteristic deficits in complex socio-emotional and communication domains. Here, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) to evaluate white matter microstructure in ASD. Methods/Principal Findings DTI scans were acquired for 19 children and adolescents with ASD (∼8–18 years; mean 12.4±3.1) and 16 age and IQ matched controls (∼8–18 years; mean 12.3±3.6) on a 3T MRI system. DTI values for fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, radial diffusivity and axial …

Utilization Of Structural And Biochemical Cues To Enhance Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Balendu Shekhar Jha

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the prospects of using the electrospinning process to fabricate tissue engineering scaffolds targeting a variety of regenerative applications, with a primary focus on the production of nerve guides for the treatment of long-defect nerve injuries in the peripheral nervous system. A basic overview of the conventional electrospinning process is provided, and the utility of this fabrication scheme in the production of collagen-based tissue engineering scaffolds is demonstrated. Next, a novel modification of the basic electrospinning process is presented. This process, called two pole air gap electrospinning, was developed to produce nerve guides that exhibit an anisotropic structure …

Electronic Monitoring Of Hand Hygiene Compliance In An Inpatient Hospital Setting, Christopher M. Masek Nov 2011

Electronic Monitoring Of Hand Hygiene Compliance In An Inpatient Hospital Setting, Christopher M. Masek

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Proper hand hygiene is known to reduce hospital acquired infections. Currently the most widely accepted method used to measure hand hygiene compliance is through direct observation. This method often provides data that may not accurately represent true hand hygiene compliance due to such factors such as the Hawthorne Effect. Perhaps a better approach is to use counting devices to capture hand hygiene opportunities and activities. This thesis focuses on the measurement of hand hygiene activities of all individuals that either work or visit an inpatient medical ward including healthcare workers, patients and visitors at the patient’s bedside for non-isolation patients. …

A Core Knowledge Based Curriculum Designed To Help Seventh And Eighth Graders Maintain Artistic Confidence, Debbie Ann Labrum Nov 2011

A Core Knowledge Based Curriculum Designed To Help Seventh And Eighth Graders Maintain Artistic Confidence, Debbie Ann Labrum

Theses and Dissertations

How do we as art educators help adolescents maintain artistic creation as a way of visual expression? This study reviews artistic approaches among kindergarten through eighth grade students as they relate to the U-curve model of development (Davis, 1997; Pariser & van den Berg, 1997). As an art educator, my observation has been that as students approach seventh and eighth grades they lose confidence in their art making abilities as they try to draw in a realistic manner. When asked if they think they are artists, most are certain that they are not. This lack in confidence is in stark …

A Foveated System For Wilderness Search And Rescue In Manned Aircraft, Carson D. Fenimore Nov 2011

A Foveated System For Wilderness Search And Rescue In Manned Aircraft, Carson D. Fenimore

Theses and Dissertations

Wilderness search and rescue can be assisted by video searchers in manned aircraft. The video searcher's primary task is to find clues on the ground. Due to altitude, it may be difficult to resolve details on the ground with a standard video camera. As the video streams at a constant frame rate, the searcher may become distracted by other tasks. While handling these tasks the searcher may miss important clues or spend extra time flying over the search area; either outcome decreases both the effectiveness of the video searcher and the chances of successfully finding missing persons. We develop an …

This article summarizes the definitions, means, and research of adapting psychotherapy to clients' cultural backgrounds. We begin by reviewing the prevailing definitions of cultural adaptation and providing a clinical example. We present an original meta-analysis of 65 experimental and quasi-experimental studies involving 8,620 participants. The omnibus effect size of d = .46 indicates that treatments specifically adapted for clients of color were moderately more effective with that clientele than traditional treatments. The most effective treatments tended to be those with greater numbers of cultural adaptations. Mental health services targeted to a specific cultural group were several times more effective than …

Subsurface Geology And Tectonic History Of Drew County, Arkansas, John Luke Hall Nov 2011

Subsurface Geology And Tectonic History Of Drew County, Arkansas, John Luke Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Initial rifting that opened the Gulf of Mexico is poorly understood. No Triassic or Jurassic rocks crop out in the northern Gulf coastal plain so the geologic history of the area is sparsely documented. In this study we examine the subsurface of Drew County, Arkansas. Drew County is north of the Luann Salt and at the edge of the North American craton. Drew County lies over a Triassic rift system that represents the opening of the Gulf. We produced interpreted seismic profiles, structural contour and isopachous maps, and cross-sections of the subsurface. Data show a NW-SE striking, 24 to 40 …

Phylogenomics Of Reichenowia Parasitica, An Alphaproteobacterial Endosymbiont Of The Freshwater Leech Placobdella Parasitica, Sebastian Kvist, Apurva Narechania, Alejandro Oceguera-Figueroa, Bella Fuks, Mark E. Siddall

Publications and Research

Although several commensal alphaproteobacteria form close relationships with plant hosts where they aid in (e.g.,) nitrogen fixation and nodulation, only a few inhabit animal hosts. Among these, Reichenowia picta, R. ornata and R. parasitica, are currently the only known mutualistic, alphaproteobacterial endosymbionts to inhabit leeches. These bacteria are harbored in the epithelial cells of the mycetomal structures of their freshwater leech hosts, Placobdella spp., and these structures have no other obvious function than housing bacterial symbionts. However, the function of the bacterial symbionts has remained unclear. Here, we focused both on exploring the genomic makeup of R. parasitica and on …
