Talented Students And Resilient At-Risk Students: Similarities And Differences, Frank C. Worrell

This study compared academically talented students (n = 23) who were not at risk for school failure and resilient at-risk students (n = 27) on risk factors and protective/promotive factors. Participants’ risk status was determined by student assignment. The academically talented students were attending a summer program at a major research university and the at-risk students were graduates of a continuation high school for students who had had numerous infractions at regular high schools. As expected, the two groups differed on risk factors and on factors related to academic status. However, the groups did not differ on psychosocial variables related …

Little in the field of fairy-tale studies is totally new. One genuinely innovative event, however, was without question Jacques Barchilon’s founding of Merveilles et contes in 1987. To be sure, Barchilon had been inspired by Fabula: Zeitschrift für Erzählforschung/Journal of Folktale Studies/Revue d’études sur le conte populaire, which had first appeared thirty years earlier. I tarried, only planning to spend a moment there. It was a cover version of "O Holy Night" performed by Josh Groban. Improving Health Outcomes for Children (IHOC) is a 5-year demonstration grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and authorized by 401 (d) of the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA).

IHOC works with doctors' offices, practices and other agencies who want to improve health care in Maine and Vermont to:

• Collect and report on the use of evidenced-based child health quality measures
• Expand the Health Information Technology to improve the flow of child health data
• Promote a collaborative child health learning environment

Pentachlorophenol Decreases Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity And Cell-Surface Protein Expression Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Tasia Hurd, Jasmine Walker, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is an organochlorine pesticide that decreases the tumor-cell killing (lytic) function of human natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells defend against tumor cells and virally infected cells. They bind to these targets, utilizing a variety of cell-surface proteins. This study examined concentrations of PCP that decrease lytic function for alteration of NK binding to tumor targets. Levels of PCP that caused loss of binding function were then examined for effects on expression of cell-surface proteins needed for binding. Exposure to 10 µm PCP for 24 h (which caused a greater than 70% loss of lytic function) decreased NK …
