Research Brief: "Military Service And Men’S Health Trajectories In Later Life", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the health and age-related changes of wartime male veterans during later years in life as compared to non-veterans and non-wartime veterans. In policy and practice, veterans reaching retirement age, with help from their families, should pay attention to their health in case any conditions arise, and health policies should look at early-life health in addition to later-life health. Suggestions for future research include performing studies over time on younger veterans as they age and clearing up biases within the sampling processes.

Background: Along with obesity, physical inactivity, and family history of metabolic disorders, African American ethnicity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the United States. However, little is known about the differences in gene expression and transcriptomic profiles of blood in T2D between African Americans (AA) and Caucasians (CAU), and microarray analysis of peripheral white blood cells (WBCs) from these two ethnic groups will facilitate our understanding of the underlying molecular mechanism in T2D and identify genetic biomarkers responsible for the disparities.

Mutations in the insulin gene can impair proinsulin folding and cause diabetes mellitus. Although crystal structures of insulin dimers and hexamers are well established, proinsulin is refractory to crystallization. Although an NMR structure of an engineered proinsulin monomer has been reported, structures of the wild-type monomer and hexamer remain undetermined. We have utilized hydroxyl radical footprinting and molecular modeling to characterize these structures. Differences between the footprints of insulin and proinsulin, defining a "shadow" of the connecting (C) domain, were employed to refine the model. The magnetization curve as a function of the magnetic field at 5 K showed that the magnetization in the (Ga_0.995Mn_0.005)N thin film was significantly enhanced due to Mn delta-doping. The magnetization curve as a function of the temperature showed that the Curie temperature of the Mn delta-doped (Ga_0.995Mn_0.005)N thin film was estimated to be above room temperature. The theoretical results showed that Ga vacancies near the Mn delta-doping layer were likely to cause p-type conductance in the (Ga_0.995Mn_0.005)N thin film. Abstract © 2011 AIP

We have investigated optical properties as a function of internal and external fields in the quantum well (QW). Optical properties of CdZnO/MgZnO QW structures are investigated by using many‐body effects. The CdZnO/MgZnO QW structure with high Cd composition is found to have smaller optical gain because the strain‐induced piezoelectric polarization and the spontaneous polarization in the well increase with the inclusion of Cd. These results demonstrate that high performance laser diode operation can be realized in CdZnO/MgZnO QW structures by reducing those polarizations adopting dipole reverse method.

The Role Of Mothers And Media On Emerging Adults’ Religious Faith And Practices By Way Of Internalization Of Prosocial Values, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson

In the current study, we investigated the role of emerging adults’ internalization of prosocial values as a mediator between maternal relationship quality and two types of media use (positive and negative) and religious faith and practices. Participants included 500 undergraduate students (ranging from 18 to 26 years; 75% European American) from five American universities. Structural equation modeling results indicated that both maternal relationship quality and positive media were related positively and indirectly (by way of prosocial values) to religious faith, and maternal relationship quality was related positively and directly to religious faith. We use the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) at a metal-gas interface to infer the metal’s yield stress (Y) under shock loading and release. We first model how Y stabilizes the RMI using hydrodynamics simulations with a perfectly plastic constitutive relation for copper (Cu). The model is then tested with molecular dynamics (MD) of crystalline Cu by comparing the inferred Y from RMI simulations with direct stress-strain calculations, both with MD at the same conditions. Finally, new RMI experiments with solid Cu validate our simulation-based model and infer Y~0.47 GPa for a 36 GPa shock.
