The Impact Of Chinese Purchases Of U.S. Government Debt On The Treasury Yield Curve, Radhames A. Lizardo, Andre V. Mollick Dec 2011

The Impact Of Chinese Purchases Of U.S. Government Debt On The Treasury Yield Curve, Radhames A. Lizardo, Andre V. Mollick

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Examining monthly data from May of 1985 to May of 2008, we find that increases in Chinese purchases of U.S government debt lead to decreases in Treasury yields. The effect is stronger as the maturity increases: a one percent increase in purchases of U.S. Treasuries by Chinese investors lowers the two-year (ten-year) Treasury yield by 10 to 38 basis points (39 to 55 basis points) on average, ceteris paribus . Overall, the demand-side variable capturing Chinese purchases of U.S. Treasuries improves the cointegrating properties of U.S. interest rates. In-sample and out-of-sample forecasts reinforce that the model with Chinese purchases greatly …

Enhancing Soybean Profitability Using Portfolio Theory, Osemenkhian Cynthia Onyechere Dec 2011

Enhancing Soybean Profitability Using Portfolio Theory, Osemenkhian Cynthia Onyechere

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of utilizing portfolio theory on producers' profitability in the production of soybeans in three test locations - Keiser, Marianna and Rohwer - in Arkansas. The study used empirical yield data, their variances and covariances over a nine year period (2002-2010) in selecting a portfolio of soybean varieties that maintains or increases yield while minimizing the yield risk. Furthermore, carbon emissions associated with soybean production was estimated by modeling the effect of a potential carbon tax as well as the potential benefit of carbon offset payments resulting from carbon sequestration. The …

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This article analyzes Illinois election eligibility criteria, both past and present, that may prevent candidates from switching their party affiliation within or between election cycles.  Throughout the years, Illinois has prevented party switching through statute and court decisions requiring that all candidates be a “qualified primary voter” of his or her respective political party.  However, a recent Illinois Supreme Court case claims that “no vestige of the former party-switching rule remains.  This article will analyze how the new case appears be at odds with both the statutory language and the previous court decisions.

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Although economic and narrative analyses are clearly useful in exploring legal issues, their foundations and persuasive power have not been thoroughly investigated.  Evolutionary biology can now explain how human beings instinctively approach legal problems, and what features from economic and narrative analysis are rooted in the information processing functions of the brain.  As a result, the most effective aspects of each can be synthesized into a new tool, the archetypal narratives of human interaction.  This article proposes that evolutionary biology indicates that human beings process legal arguments using three archetypal narratives: (1) the story of cooperation, which describes maximizing the …

Effect Of Size Reduction Parameters In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Process, Brian Breneman Dec 2011

Effect Of Size Reduction Parameters In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Process, Brian Breneman

Biomedical Engineering

Within pharmaceutical manufacturing, size reduction is one of the most extensively used and vital unit operations. Size reduction in tablet production is achieved primarily through milling procedures, which allows for attaining product uniformity, optimizing product solubility, and improving bioavailability. Additionally, powders with a narrow range of size distribution can obviate problems in downstream processing as pertains to blending, compression, and coating as well as improve drug performance1. The purpose this study was to characterize the effect of various size reduction parameters as a result of the pharmaceutical milling process on a lactose wet granulation formulation and chemically active …
