Memo To The Sec On The Proposed Rule On Disclosure Of Payments By Resource Extraction Issuers, Perrine Toledano

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

CCSI strongly supports the transparency of contracts and tax flows. CCSI shares the belief of many stakeholders that transparency is essential to leverage extractive industries for sustainable development and is in the mutual interest of all stakeholders. However, some industry players continue to voice the concern that increased transparency would be harmful for their business. Therefore, CCSI is working to also establish the business case for transparency.

In one such case, some industry players have been lobbying against the regulations developed by the Security and Exchange Commission to implement the mandatory disclosure provisions of the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform …

Fighting For Recognition: The Role African Americans Played In World Fairs, Andrew R. Valint Dec 2011

Fighting For Recognition: The Role African Americans Played In World Fairs, Andrew R. Valint

History Theses

ABSTRACT OF THESIS

Fighting for Recognition

The Role African Americans played in World Fairs

In the years following the Civil War African Americans were locked in a struggle for equality. Persevering through racism and the institution of Jim Crow laws, African Americans made advancements socially, economically, politically, and educationally.

As the U.S. ushered in the dawn of the 20th century, World Fairs became the altar on which blacks could showcase their progress since Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. From the 1889 fair in Paris to Buffalo’s Pan American Exposition of 1901 African Americans fought for a ‘Negro Exhibit’ to factually …

The Significance Of Human Remains In Museum Collections: Implications For Collections Management, Kacey M. Page Dec 2011

The Significance Of Human Remains In Museum Collections: Implications For Collections Management, Kacey M. Page

History Theses

The significance of a museum collection has changed over the years, in how it is managed and cared for, and how it is viewed by the public. Best practice mandates that professional policies and guidelines be developed to standardize the acquisition, care, and use of all objects or artifacts that are kept within a museum environment. Although human remains are not an exception to these policies, they hold a unique position within museums; standardized guidelines for their care and management are still developing. The following thesis will look into the policies and issues of housing human remains within museums, both …

The North Pole Controversy Of 1909 And The Treatment Of The Greenland Inuit People: An Historical Perspective, Kayla J. Shypski Dec 2011

The North Pole Controversy Of 1909 And The Treatment Of The Greenland Inuit People: An Historical Perspective, Kayla J. Shypski

History Theses

Polar exploration was a large part of American culture and society during the mid to late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The North Pole controversy of 1909 in which two American Arctic explorers both claimed to have reached the North Pole was a culmination of the polar exploration era. However, one aspect of the polar expeditions that is relatively unknown is the treatment of the native Inuit peoples of the Arctic by the polar explorers. The case of a small group of Inuit peoples who were brought back from Greenland and sold to the American Museum of Natural …

Harry Potter: A Hero Of Mythic Proportions, Katie L. Baker Dec 2011

Harry Potter: A Hero Of Mythic Proportions, Katie L. Baker

English Theses

This thesis argues that Harry Potter, the main character in the series of novels written by J.K. Rowling, is a mythic hero. A character in literature deemed a hero can only be a mythic hero by completing a series of events both predetermined and determined by the hero. Joseph Campbell’s work A Hero With a Thousand Faces outlines these qualities a character must possess and the events he must complete in his life called the initiation, the departure, and the return of the hero. Using Campbell’s seminar work as a critical perspective, I read the protagonist of the Harry Potter …

Method Development And Validation Of The Quantitation Of 19 Antipsychotics Using Deuterated Internal Standards, Anthony S. Epps

Chemistry Theses

Antipsychotic drugs or neuroleptics are used primarily for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar disorder. In forensic science antipsychotics are drugs of considerable interest because of their potential abuse, involvement in suicides, and they are frequently associated with sudden death investigations. Well-characterized and fully validated analytical data is necessary to generate reproducible and reliable results. As a result, data can be correctly interpreted and objectively demonstrate in its applicability for the intended use. This research has developed and validated a method that is selective, sensitive and accurate using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of …

Econometric Analysis Of Erie County, Ny Schools: The Effects Of Poverty On Our Schools And Evaluating Possible Solutions, Ryan B. Keem

Multidisciplinary Studies Theses

School districts in the Buffalo Metropolitan Area are very segregated by socioeconomic status which has resulted in very different educational outcomes for the region's students as measured by New York State assessment results at the 4th grade and 8th grade level in English Language Arts and Math. This study measured the correlation between average test score results for each school building in Erie County and the rate of low-income students in those schools. The multiple regression analysis performed controlled for race, percentage of students that had a disability, class size, and per-pupil expenditures by the district.

The Arc Of Justice: Indigenous Activism And Anthropological Intersections, Alaka Wali

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article discusses the intersections between anthropological and Amazonian indigenous activism over a four decade period. It takes the distinctive approach of Shelton "Sandy" Davis as a framework to demonstrate the difficult trajectories of activism for both indigenous peoples and anthropologists. I provide examples from my own experiences working with indigenous organizations in Peru and Ecuador.

Extreme Risks In Financial Markets And Monetary Policies Of The Euro-Candidates, Hubert Gabrisch, Lucjan T. Orlowski Dec 2011

Extreme Risks In Financial Markets And Monetary Policies Of The Euro-Candidates, Hubert Gabrisch, Lucjan T. Orlowski

WCBT Faculty Publications

This study investigates extreme tail risks in financial markets of the euro-candidate countries and their implications for monetary policies. Our empirical tests show the prevalence of extreme risks in the conditional volatility series of selected financial variables, that is, interbank rates, equity market indexes and exchange rates. We argue that excessive instability of key target and instrument variables should be mitigated by monetary policies. Central banks in these countries will be well-advised to use both standard and unorthodox (discretionary) tools of monetary policy while steering their economies out of the financial crisis and through the euro-convergence process.

Online Casinos Forced To Fold: Examining The Effects Of In Re Baum, 386 B.R. 649 (Bankr. N.D. Ohio 2008), Justin A. Volker

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) drastically changed the landscape of the online gaming industry.  Although the law was aimed at stopping online gambling altogether, it did not actually make such activities illegal.  Rather, the legislation targeted the enforcement of gambling debts accrued online in a roundabout attempt to influence policy.  In Re Baum was the first court case to apply the new gaming statute, ruling that such gambling debts were not enforceable.  Although the court applied the law correctly to the given facts, this Note focuses on how the statute itself should be amended …

Indigenous Rights And Ethno-Development: The Life Of An Indigenous Organization In The Rio Negro Of Brazil, Janet M. Chernela Dec 2011

Indigenous Rights And Ethno-Development: The Life Of An Indigenous Organization In The Rio Negro Of Brazil, Janet M. Chernela

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Following a successful campaign to end the unlawful practices of trafficking that brought them to Manaus, indigenous Tukanoan women from the Upper Rio Negro established a local indigenous organization with which to plan and manage their own ethno-development, including cultural heritage activities, institution building, revenue development, health and legal services, community, and other initiatives. The case provides an opportunity to explore indigenous ethno-development, a concept at the heart of the theory and practice of Shelton (Sandy) Davis.

No seguimento de uma campanha bem sucessida em Manaus para terminar com práticas de tráfego ilegais, mulheres indígenas da tribo Tukano do Alto …

If Not Welfare, Then What?: How Single Mothers Finance College Post-Welfare Reform, Kristin Wilson Dec 2011

If Not Welfare, Then What?: How Single Mothers Finance College Post-Welfare Reform, Kristin Wilson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The article follows previous work on TANF and AFDC by asking if not welfare, then what social programs and financial aid programs are low-income women using to support their college attendance, and what is the impact of these programs on the college-going decisions of low-income women? The study is based on case studies of 10 low-income women attending a community college. Results indicated that EITC, food stamps, and subsidized housing are stable sources of funding. However, each of these programs requires diferent application processes and compliance regulations. Only the Pell Grant was viewed as a dependable source of funding for …

Social Skills As Predictors Of Theory Of Mind Development Among Children, Lucia A. Salinas Dec 2011

Social Skills As Predictors Of Theory Of Mind Development Among Children, Lucia A. Salinas

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The present study examined relationships among social skills including deceptive behavior, socioeconomic status, and theory of mind development in 98 predominantly Hispanic 3- to 7-year-old children residing in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Measures were of vocabulary, deceptive ability, true belief, and false belief understanding. Children’s interactions with others were also measured through observational methods and parental data was obtained to compute socioeconomic status and validate social skills information. It was hypothesized that social skill development, including deception would emerge along with theory of mind understanding in this population, and that children from households of lower socioeconomic status would …

Does Responding On Progressive Ratio Schedule Of Reinforcement Vary As A Function Of Phase In Estrous Cycle?, Armandina M. Sanchez Dec 2011

Does Responding On Progressive Ratio Schedule Of Reinforcement Vary As A Function Of Phase In Estrous Cycle?, Armandina M. Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual and estrous cycle have been found to influence a variety of behavioral and physical responses in humans and animals, respectively. Impulsive behavior has been associated with the luteal phase of the cycle. Progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement has been widely used to assess the strength of reinforcers. In the present study, a comparison was made between the rate of motor activity, lever pressing, of early and late estrous groups. Differences between the groups were not statistically significant. Further analysis explored subjects individually. Visual examination of the data reveal extreme variability in responding, which coupled with …

Comprehensive Strength Training Program For A Recreational Senior Golfer 11-Months After A Rotator Cuff Repair, Jason Brumitt, Erik P. Meira, Hui En Gilpin, Meredith Brunette

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Background and Purpose: Golf is a popular sport played by hundreds of thousands of individuals of all ages and of varying skill levels. An orthopedic or sports-related injury and/or surgery may limit an individual’s sport participation, require him/her to complete a course of rehabilitation, and initiate (or resume) a sportspecific training program. Unlike the availability of evidence to guide postsurgical rehabilitation and sportspecific training of athletes from sports other than golf, there have only been two reports describing outcomes after surgery and for golfers. The purpose of this case report is to present a post-rehabilitation return to sporttraining program for …

A Comparison Of Intensive Care Unit Mortality Prediction Models Through The Use Of Data Mining Techniques, Sujin Kim, Woojae Kim, Rae Woong Park

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: The intensive care environment generates a wealth of critical care data suited to developing a well-calibrated prediction tool. This study was done to develop an intensive care unit (ICU) mortality prediction model built on University of Kentucky Hospital (UKH)'s data and to assess whether the performance of various data mining techniques, such as the artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and decision trees (DT), outperform the conventional logistic regression (LR) statistical model.

METHODS: The models were built on ICU data collected regarding 38,474 admissions to the UKH between January 1998 and September 2007. The first 24 hours …

Hear My Voice: An Examination Of The Views Of Parents Who Are Raising Children Of African American Descent, Chavez Maurice Phelps Dec 2011

Hear My Voice: An Examination Of The Views Of Parents Who Are Raising Children Of African American Descent, Chavez Maurice Phelps

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have demonstrated that children who attend early childhood education programs benefit academically and socially (National Institute for Early Education Research, 2003). However, other researchers have shown that African American students may still lag behind their counterparts when they enter school (National Center for Education Statistics ([NCES], 2004). To explain this phenomenon, scholars and practitioners have relied on deficit theories, such as Ruby Payne’s (2005) culture of poverty theory or John Ogbu’s (1992) oppositional culture identity theory, which shift the blame solely on the child or their parents. However, there are other researchers who have stressed the importance of examining …

Bat Species Diversity At An Urban-Rural Interface: Dominance By One Species In An Urban Area, Jason Philip Damm Dec 2011

Bat Species Diversity At An Urban-Rural Interface: Dominance By One Species In An Urban Area, Jason Philip Damm

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growth of urban areas is known to affect different species of wildlife in varying ways. Many organisms have exhibited declines in abundance due to habitat loss, while overall species diversity decreases. Bats can serve as reliable indicators of habitat quality and level of anthropogenic disturbance. To investigate urbanization impacts on a Midwestern bat community, I analyzed nine years of mist-net captures from a study area on the edge of Indianapolis, Indiana, where the percentage of urbanized ground cover ranged from zero to 26%, within 1.3-km of a net site. I used Pearson correlation statistics to examine the effect of …

Insect Abundance And Variability In An Urban-Rural Landscape And Comparison To Foraging Habitat Selection Of Bats, Nicole M. Oehler

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I conducted a study of the relationship between prey availability and foraging habitat selection of Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis), big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) and evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) in an urban-rural landscape matrix of southwestern Indianapolis. Insects were collected from nine different habitat types found within the range of these species. Insect data were collected from 2006 to 2008 using sticky traps placed in each habitat type. Habitat types were ranked by importance to each bat species (based on previous studies) and then compared to the average number of prey insects captured per habitat …
