A Tale Of Two Plantations: The Comparative Development Of The Ensley And Davies Plantations In Shelby County, Tennessee And The Museums That Interpret Them, Emily Rosalind Schwimmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study compares the histories of two plantations in Shelby County, Tennessee - the Ensley Plantation in Southwest Memphis and the Davies Plantation in Bartlett. During broad national transformations such as the Great Migration and suburbanization, proximity to or distance from the City of Memphis strongly influenced divergent land-use, demographic and socio-economic composition, and political and economic resources in each historic plantation area. The historical experiences of each area and its contemporary socio-economic and demographic composition, in turn, influences the way that a museum at each site addresses the past and, particularly, the historical presence of African Americans. The C. …

Bouncing Back: The Viability And Sustainability Of A School-Based Therapeutic Summer Camp For Adolescents Exposed To Violence, Darcus Fayetta Greene Dec 2011

Bouncing Back: The Viability And Sustainability Of A School-Based Therapeutic Summer Camp For Adolescents Exposed To Violence, Darcus Fayetta Greene

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The scholarship on exposure to violence suggests that traumatic and violent experiences place students at risk for exhibiting externalizing and internalizing behaviors that may impede academic performance. Moreover, the lack of effective programs and services has perpetuated the problem of unmet or underserved mental health needs. The purpose of the present study was to understand mental health clinicians' perspectives of best practices within the context of a two-week, school-based summer camp designed to provide therapeutic services to middle school students who have been exposed to violence. Bronfenbrenner's ecology of human development and Vygotsky's principle of the zone of proximal development …

Chemotherapy Induced Mucositis: A Novel Porcine Model, Jamee Covington Martin Dec 2011

Chemotherapy Induced Mucositis: A Novel Porcine Model, Jamee Covington Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Chemotherapy-induce mucositis (CIM) is a dose-limiting side effect of cancer therapy with concurrent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased food consumption. Of the pediatric population approximately 40% of patients receiving standard dose and 100% of patients receiving high dose chemotherapy are afflicted. Although scientific advancements have improved pediatric cancer survival rates, occurrence of mucositis decreases quality of life, increases treatment interruptions or even delays therapy, and often reduces the dose. Currently, there are no relevant animal models studying the entire gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Based on these findings, we decided to develop a novel porcine model for CIM. Examination of the …

Population density of the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and associations of occurrence and density with selected habitat variables were studied at Meeman Biological Station from 2000-2006 and 2008-2010. Mark/recapture techniques were utilized to estimate density. Associations of density to habitat variables were assessed using a geographic information system. Density ranged from 1 Virginia opossum per 9.5 ha to 1 per 3.5 ha with a mean of 1 per 6.9 ha. Average precipitation the year prior was significantly correlated with density. Winter and spring precipitation significantly correlated with same-year density. Fall precipitation significantly correlated with following-year density. There were no correlations …

Do Reflective Responses By The Therapist Improve The Outcome Of Psychotherapy, Catherine Marie Reich Dec 2011

Do Reflective Responses By The Therapist Improve The Outcome Of Psychotherapy, Catherine Marie Reich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Although reflective listening is a technique used by a number of therapeutic orientations, there is little empiricial evidence of its causal impact on psychotherapy outcome. This randomized clinical trial examined whether reflective listening by therapists influences perceptions of empathy or therapeutic outcome. In the study, therapists at a university counseling center were trained to use either a greater or lesser number of reflective responses with clients they treated. Both clients and therapists then completed empathy and outcome measures after each of the first four sessions of treatment. Analyses failed to suggest that therapist reflection actually occurred more frequently in one …

Reflections Of Self: An Autoethnography Exploring A Survivor's Journey To Healing, Shemika Maria Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study exposed the ramifications of childhood sexual abuse in regards to an African American woman's self-representation by contextualizing this experience within the larger cultural context; thereby, illuminating issues regarding race, class, gender, and relationships with others. Framed within a feminist theoretical paradigm, this study integrated the sociological context of race and culture using Black Feminist thought (Collins, 2000) and Relational Cultural Theory, which examines women's psychological identity development (Jordan, 2010; Miller, 1976). To illustrate an African American woman's negotiation of existence as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this qualitative study employed the research methodology autoethnography. Employing autoethnography provides …

States Of Science: A Comparative Analysis Of Germany And Turkey, Sera Elizabeth Babakus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study explores the nature of science in Germany and Turkey. Specifically, Iwant to know what science looks like in different settings, and how it interacts with other institutions of the state. Science is assessed within the two contexts at both an individual-societal and institutional level. Indicators of knowledge and attitudes are analyzed to identify individual orientations towards science. Discourse analysis is used to evaluate the nature of science within legislatures and national academies, as well as the overall state scientific bureaucracy. Iexpect observed patterns to translate into policy and, as such, apply my findings to an explanation of German …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Electrospun Chitosan Mats Crosslinked With Genipin As Guided Tissue Regeneration Barrier Membranes, Peter A. Norowski Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical technique commonly used to exclude bacteria and soft tissues from bone graft sites in oral/maxillofacial bone graft sites by using a barrier membrane to maintain the graft contour and space. Current clinical barrier membrane materials based on expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and bovine type 1 collagen are non-ideal and experience a number of disadvantages including membrane exposure, bacterial colonization/biofilm formation and premature degradation, all of which result in increased surgical intervention and poor bone regeneration. These materials do not actively participate in tissue regeneration, however bioactive materials, such as chitosan, may provide advantages such …

Seismic Wave Attenuation In The Unconsolidated Sediments Of The Upper Mississippi Embayment, Chigozie Simeon Obikili Dec 2011

Seismic Wave Attenuation In The Unconsolidated Sediments Of The Upper Mississippi Embayment, Chigozie Simeon Obikili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The attenuation characteristics of P waves in the Upper Mississippi embayment were estimated using U.S. Geological Survey explosion data recorded by 17 Portable Array for Numerical Data Acquisition (PANDA) stations deployed in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Seven explosive sources, ranging from 500-lbs to 1000-lbs, located west of the PANDA stations were used. Head waves with an apparent velocity of 6km/s and the large amplitude wave train with an apparent velocity of 1.8 to 2km/s are identified from the seismogram. They were interpreted as a P-wave refracted from the top of Pleozoic basement and reverberating P-waves trapped in the unconsolidated …

Weighted Meta Analytic Procedure For Pooling High Throughput Biological Data, Xiaodong Zhou Dec 2011

Weighted Meta Analytic Procedure For Pooling High Throughput Biological Data, Xiaodong Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

High throughput technologies such as DNA microarray have been widely used to simultaneously measure the expressions of thousands of genes. Analysis of such data often yields to high false positive and false negative rates. When multiple datasets addressing the same scientific question are available, it is clear that integrating them can be more informative, with superior operating characteristics, than any individual study. Pooling the P-values of the statistical tests from the individual studies presents a feasible and proven solution for integrating heterogeneous datasets. However, pooling these P-values with equal weights may result in suboptimal statistical power because of the unequal …

Protecting Human Rights: An Examination Of Judicial Independence And Treaty Compliance, Maegan Kay Traynom Dec 2011

Protecting Human Rights: An Examination Of Judicial Independence And Treaty Compliance, Maegan Kay Traynom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

States agree to many human rights protections through treaty ratification. Often, however, states do not comply with the treaties they have ratified and human rights are abused. This study focuses on the role of the judiciary in holding the state accountable to their obligations under human rights treaties. Specifically, examining whether having an independent judiciary positively correlates with being compliant with human rights treaties. This is done through an exploratory case study of Brazil, which examines both its general court system and its military court system. While the general court system is very indepedent, the military court system is not. …

Colombian Nationalism: Four Musical Perspectives For Violin And Piano, Ana Maria Trujillo Dec 2011

Colombian Nationalism: Four Musical Perspectives For Violin And Piano, Ana Maria Trujillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper explores the Colombian nationalistic musical movement, which was born as a search for identity that various composers undertook in order to discover the roots of Colombian musical folklore. These roots, while distinct, have all played a significant part in the formation of the culture that gave birth to a unified national identity. It is this identity that acts as a recurring motif throughout the works of the four compsers mentioned in this study, each representing a different stage in the nationalistic movement according to their respective generations, backgrounds, and ideological postures. The idea of universalism and the integration …

Solution Conformation Of Biologically Active Peptides As Determined By Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange And Mass Spectrometry, Deepa Kunapuram Dec 2011

Solution Conformation Of Biologically Active Peptides As Determined By Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange And Mass Spectrometry, Deepa Kunapuram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This research is focused on appplying mass spectrometry based methods to understand the conformational changes of bioactive peptides in solution. In this dissertation, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) coupled with hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) has been employed to probe the secondary structure of selected peptides in membrane-mimetic enviroments. The membrane-mimetic systems used in our study include water and trifluoroethanol (TFE). HDX of the amide protons in native proteins depends on the solvent accessibility and spatial arrangement of amino acid residues, thus providing information about the secondary structure of a protein. A total of six biologically active peptides have been chosen for …

Keeping It Real: Teaching And Learning In The Harry Potter Series, Mary E. N. Vaughn Dec 2011

Keeping It Real: Teaching And Learning In The Harry Potter Series, Mary E. N. Vaughn

Honors Theses

Scholars have noted that embedded in the plot of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series are representations of teaching and learning in and outside of the classroom. In fact, much study has been dedicated to analyzing pedagogical techniques present in the series, some of which studies I will be discussing below. The novels also reflect real problems and issues in the classroom. How people react to the educational process depicted in the text grows out of popularized conceptions or misconceptions of real-world education. Considering that Rowling was an educator before becoming established as a writer, she probably has some ideas …

Reading Ability Of Third Grade Southern Dialect, Katelynn Gibson Dec 2011

Reading Ability Of Third Grade Southern Dialect, Katelynn Gibson

Honors Theses

Fourth grade is a critical time period because the reading style changes from learning to read to reading to learn. Studies have shown that if a student does not have proficient reading skills, they will struggle throughout the rest of school and have a higher risk of high school dropout (“Early Warning: Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters, 2010). The Southern dialect can have an effect on reading. Goodman and Buck (1997) have stated that “the speakers of the low-status dialects of English have much higher rates of reading failure than high status dialect readers” (p. 455). …

Qualitative Research In Teaching Diversity In A Non-Diverse High School Setting Using Contemporary Art, Robin L. Reczek Dec 2011

Qualitative Research In Teaching Diversity In A Non-Diverse High School Setting Using Contemporary Art, Robin L. Reczek

Art Education Projects

Abstract

This qualitative action research study examined the effects of introducing diverse contemporary artworks into a non-diverse educational setting. For 3 months, 18 female high school students explored a range of artists, art styles, and artworks, in aid to discovering their own diverse qualities as well as the diversity of their classmates. Through participatory action research, I investigated how diverse contemporary artwork impacted student actions, discussions, and artworks. With the assistance of the transformative learning theory, I expected to convert students with non-accepting diversity views into unbiased young women. My research included data gathered from an assortment of alumni interviews, …

Individualism And Collectivism In A Korean Population, Diana D. Ahn Dec 2011

Individualism And Collectivism In A Korean Population, Diana D. Ahn

Scripps Senior Theses

Though much research has been conducted concerning the horizontal and vertical attributes of individualism and, not much has been done comparing and contrasting an Eastern culture, collectivism to a specific aspect of American culture, individualism, such as Korean American. The 32-item INDCOL scale was used to measure the 4 attributes (Singelis et al., 1995). Contrary to the proposed hypothesis, this study found high scores in horizontal individualism in Korean American participants and high scores in horizontal individualism and horizontal collectivism in Korean participants. These results could indicate a shift towards a different attribute in the Korean and Korean American community.

Logos And Psyche In Plato's Phaedo, Jesse I. Bailey Dec 2011

Logos And Psyche In Plato's Phaedo, Jesse I. Bailey

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In this dissertation I argue that, according to the Phaedo, the ψυχή should not be understood as a reified, quasi-physical entity which can travel to another τόπος upon separation from the body; that is, the soul should not be understood as what came to be called a “spiritual substance.” Rather, I will show that the Phaedo presents the proper ontology of the soul to be based in an understanding of its characteristic activity. I will argue that this activity is revealed to be the gathering of multiplicities (‘parts’) into the intelligible unities (‘wholes’) which we experience. This gathering occurs in …

Buffered Memory: A Hypothesis For The Maintenance Of Functional, Virus-Specific Cd8(+) T Cells During Cytomegalovirus Infection., Christopher M Snyder

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Chronic infections have been a major topic of investigation in recent years, but the mechanisms that dictate whether or not a pathogen is successfully controlled are incompletely understood. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpesvirus that establishes a persistent infection in the majority of people in the world. Like other herpesviruses, CMV is well controlled by an effective immune response and induces little, if any, pathology in healthy individuals. However, controlling CMV requires continuous immune surveillance, and thus, CMV is a significant cause of morbidity and death in immune-compromised individuals. T cells in particular play an important role in controlling CMV and …

Escape Rates For Coupled Particles In A Stochastic Environment, Gregory Slusarczyk Dec 2011

Escape Rates For Coupled Particles In A Stochastic Environment, Gregory Slusarczyk

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

A particle placed in a deterministic, overdamped potential well will move towards an attractor located at the bottom of the well. Once the particle reaches the attractor, it remains there forever since no other forces are acting on the particle. However, if weak stochasticity is introduced, the particle will fluctuate around the attractor. As a rare event, the noise can organize itself in such a way that a large fluctuation is created that causes the particle to escape from the basin of attraction. The escape rates/escape times can be found both analytically and numerically. Furthermore, it is possible to predict …

Quantum Many-Body Calculation Of Mixed-Parity Pairing In The Sr2ruo4 Superconductor Induced By Spin-Orbit Coupling, J. J. Deisz, Tim Kidd Dec 2011

Quantum Many-Body Calculation Of Mixed-Parity Pairing In The Sr2ruo4 Superconductor Induced By Spin-Orbit Coupling, J. J. Deisz, Tim Kidd

Faculty Work

The unusual superconducting state in Sr2RuO4 has long been viewed as being analogous to a superfluid state in liquid 3He. Nevertheless, calculations based on this odd-parity state are presently unable to completely reconcile the properties of Sr2RuO4. Using a self-consistent quantum many-body scheme that employs realistic parameters, we are able to model several signature properties of the normal and superconducting states of Sr2RuO4. We find that the dominant component of the model superconducting state is of even parity and closely related to superconducting state for the high-Tc …

Where Did (S)He Get Those Skills? An Investigation Of Acrl’S Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians, Theresa Westbrock, Sarah Fabian Dec 2011

Where Did (S)He Get Those Skills? An Investigation Of Acrl’S Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians, Theresa Westbrock, Sarah Fabian

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

How and where are instruction librarians being trained as teachers? In 2007, ACRL approved a revised set of proficiencies for instruction librarians. Using these new proficiencies, we have repeated a 1993 study (Shonrock and Mulder) that investigated if and when librarians were learning teaching-related skills. Using these data, we will determine whether library schools have made adjustments to their programs based on the recommendations put forth by the earlier study. We will also focus on specific skills instruction librarians predominantly report learning on the job, in order to identify where leaders of in-house professional development programs might target their efforts.

The Marvelous Life Of Paul Steven Miller, Clark B. Lombardi

Washington Law Review

When I was hired by the University of Washington School of Law in the spring of 2004, I skimmed all of my new colleagues’ biographies, including Paul Steven Miller’s. I don’t remember Paul Steven Miller’s standing out. The biography was short and listed mostly professional positions and publications. It made clear that he had had an important career, but it did not make clear how revolutionary a figure he was.
