Impact Of Spatial Correlation Of Fading Channels On The Performance Of Mimo Underwater Communication Systems, Jesse Cross, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Dec 2011

Impact Of Spatial Correlation Of Fading Channels On The Performance Of Mimo Underwater Communication Systems, Jesse Cross, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The spatial and intertap correlation matrices of fading channels are first estimated for underwater multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems using real experimental data. We confirm that underwater MIMO channels exhibit strong spatial and temporal correlation. the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MIMO system at different correlation scenarios are also evaluated with computer simulation. at BER=0.01%, the required SNR of highly correlated channel is 5 dB higher than the i.i.d. channel. BER results of the experimental data also quantitatively show the performance degradation caused by the correlation. © 2011 IEEE.

Characterization Of Crushed Rock-Concrete Interface Behavior Through The Parallel Gradation Technique, Domenica Cambio, Xin Kang, Louis Ge

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The response of a soil-structure system subjected to monotonic or cyclic loading is influenced significantly by the mechanical behavior of soil-structure interface. in this paper, the friction characteristics of the crushed rock-concrete interface and the role of the crushed rock deformability were examined through a series of monotonic and cyclic direct shear tests. the physical modeling technique of parallel gradation was adopted where two parallel gradation curves of the crushed rocks were prepared and used in the tests. the tests were carried out in dry condition and with two initial void ratios representing both loose and dense states. Two concrete …

Measuring Global Response Of A Wind Turbine To Simulated Earthquake Shaking Assisted By Point Tracking Videogrammetry, Ian Prowell, Tim Schmidt, Ahmed Elgamal, Chia Ming Uang, Hal Romanowitz, J. Edward Duggan Dec 2011

Measuring Global Response Of A Wind Turbine To Simulated Earthquake Shaking Assisted By Point Tracking Videogrammetry, Ian Prowell, Tim Schmidt, Ahmed Elgamal, Chia Ming Uang, Hal Romanowitz, J. Edward Duggan

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experiments investigating earthquake response of structures traditionally use conventional wired instruments such as strain gauges, displacement transducers, and accelerometers deployed at key areas of interest throughout structure. for wind turbines the rotor is one of these key areas, but due to rotation it is not possible to use wired instruments without a special slip ring. in a recent experiment conducted using the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Large High Performance Shake Table (LHPOST) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) the global response of a full scale 65-kW turbine (22 m hub height) was monitored using a novel …

The Role Of Operative Temperature In Prickly Pear Use By Nesting Northern Bobwhite, Fidel Hernández, Scott E. Henke, Nova J. Silvy, Dale Rollins Dec 2011

The Role Of Operative Temperature In Prickly Pear Use By Nesting Northern Bobwhite, Fidel Hernández, Scott E. Henke, Nova J. Silvy, Dale Rollins

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

High temperatures can negatively impact Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations by reducing reproductive effort or altering habitat use. In western Texas, Northern Bobwhite commonly nest in prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.) instead of their typical nesting substrate of bunchgrass habitat. We tested the hypothesis that bobwhites nest in prickly pear cactus because it offered a cooler microclimate than bunchgrass. Our objectives were to compare 1) operative temperature between bunchgrass and prickly pear habitat and 2) egg hatchability and clutch size between bobwhite nests located in either prickly pear or bunchgrass plants. We collected microclimate data at both habitat types during …

Urban Bus Services In Developing Countries And Countries In Transition: A Framework For Regulatory And Institutional Developments, Brendan Finn, Corinne Mulley

Journal of Public Transportation

Urban passenger transport has experienced major change in many developing countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as in countries of political and/or economic transition in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and China. Such changes have included planned market opening to private operators and new entrants; unplanned market opening by the entry of unlicensed operators; privatization and other changes to the ownership base of large public-sector transport companies; emergence of large-scale minibus and paratransit; and national and urban policies and programs to upgrade the transport supply and quality. This paper presents a framework to understand regulatory …

The Effect Of Gender Role And Males' Attitudes Toward Receiving Mental Health Therapy, Christina H. Thomas Dec 2011

The Effect Of Gender Role And Males' Attitudes Toward Receiving Mental Health Therapy, Christina H. Thomas

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this research study was to build upon previous research pertaining to gender role and young adult male attitudes towards receiving mental health therapy. An additional purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between media exposure and attitude toward mental health therapy. The first hypothesis was that there would be a positive correlation between gender role scores and attitudes with the BEM Sex- Role Inventory (BSRI) and with scores on attitudes with the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPHS) in young adult males. The second hypothesis was that young adult males who watched a …

An Initial Analysis Of The Role Of Sts-1 And Sts-2 In The Development Of Regulatory T Cells, Nithya Sivaram Dec 2011

An Initial Analysis Of The Role Of Sts-1 And Sts-2 In The Development Of Regulatory T Cells, Nithya Sivaram

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a critical role in down-regulating immune responses to self antigens. Here we assess the significance of Sts-1 and Sts-2, two protein phosphatases that negatively regulate TCR signaling, in the development and maintenance of Tregs. We show that the number of splenic Tregs in vivo is elevated in the absence of Sts-1and Sts-2. We also found that Sts-1 and Sts-2 play a redundant role in TGF--mediated induction of Tregs in vitro. These data indicate that the Sts proteins are crucial for the maintenance of normal Treg populations in mice and also in TGF--mediated induction of Tregs …
