A Study Of Higher-Order Mode Damping In The Superconducting Energy Recovery Linac At Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lee Reginald Hammons
A Study Of Higher-Order Mode Damping In The Superconducting Energy Recovery Linac At Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lee Reginald Hammons
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
An energy recovery LINAC (ERL) is being constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory that will involve a superconducting LINAC along with a superconducting electron gun, all operating at 703.75 MHz. The ERL will serve as a testbed for the concepts and technologies required to implement future upgrades in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because of the high current and high charge requirements of the ERL, effective higher-order mode (HOM) damping is an essential component of the ERL research and development program. This thesis focuses on three areas of HOM characterization and damping development: damping of HOMs in the five-cell LINAC, …
Least Sine Squares And Robust Compound Regression Analysis, Hao Han
Least Sine Squares And Robust Compound Regression Analysis, Hao Han
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The errors-in-variables (EIV) regression model, being more realistic by accounting for measurement errors in both the dependent and the independent variables, is widely used in econometrics, chemistry, medical, and environmental sciences, etc. The traditional EIV model estimators, however, can be highly biased by outliers and other departures from the underlying assumptions. In this work, we propose two novel nonparametric estimation approaches - the least sine squares (LSS) and the robust compound regression (RCR) analysis methods for the robust estimation of EIV models. The RCR method, as a natural extension and combination of the new LSS method and the compound regression …

Solitude: The Orchestration of a Word on a Canvas By Martin Sebastian Loyato The orchestration of a word on a canvas and the procedures and artistic decisions that are contained in the creation of my composition for orchestra: Solitude. For me, music, painting, and poetry are equivalent in meaning. As an artist, my passion is expressed by fusing these art forms. My personal experience of this synthesis is so compelling that the compositional technique I use to create each of these three types of art is based on the same parameters: architecture, phrasing, sounds, colors, textures, and all creative multidimensional …
Investigation Of Materials Surface Chemistry On Osteoblast Proliferation, Migration And Differentiation, Xia Lu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Osteoporosis, a bone disease caused by the decreased mass and impaired structure of bone, is becoming an increasing threat to the health of the elderly population. To treat and prevent this kind of suffering, understanding of the bone formation and regeneration is of significant importance, during which bone cell-biomaterial interaction plays a critical role, especially osteoblasts. In this work, we report an in situ investigation of osteoblast proliferation, migration and differentiation on a series of substrates with variable surface chemistry as a result of coating fabrication. Primary investigation indicated that cells migrated faster on sulfonated polystyrene (SPS)-coated MirrIR slides than …
Behavioral And Environmental Correlates Of Parasite Burden In Eulemur Cinereiceps From Southeastern Madagascar, Sara Katharine Martin
Behavioral And Environmental Correlates Of Parasite Burden In Eulemur Cinereiceps From Southeastern Madagascar, Sara Katharine Martin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The grey-headed lemur, Eulemur cinereiceps, is among the top 25 most endangered primates. This work investigated behavioral and environmental correlates of parasite exposure through the evaluation of parasite burden in two wild metapopulations of E. cinereiceps in southeastern Madagascar. Understanding the relationship between primate behavior, environment and primate disease risk is critical for the conservation of primates and their ecosystems. The presence and distribution of parasites among primate populations is the result of primate exposure to parasites through both behavioral and environmental variables. Primate exposure to parasites is often the result of either host social behaviors or habitat use behaviors. …
Determination Of Sexual Dimorphism From The Proximal Femur In A Heterogeneous North American Population, Kathleen Elizabeth Droesch
Determination Of Sexual Dimorphism From The Proximal Femur In A Heterogeneous North American Population, Kathleen Elizabeth Droesch
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Many studies support the use of population specific standards to establish sexing of skeletal remains. Classic collections, which have been used to establish population standards, may not be reflective of modern societies, which are frequently composed of multiple ethnicities. In this study, vertical head diameter (VHD), superior-inferior neck diameter (SID), hip axis length (HAL) and neck-shaft angle (NSA) were measured from the proximal femur in order to determine if dimorphism can be established in a heterogeneous, contemporary population. Radiographic images from 159 males and 293 females were sampled. Comparisons using a two-tailed t-test indicated significant differences between males and females …
The Effects Of Dietary Immunostimulation On Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Immune Response To Sea Lice (Lepeophtheirus Salmonis) Infection, Sarah Ellen Friend
The Effects Of Dietary Immunostimulation On Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Immune Response To Sea Lice (Lepeophtheirus Salmonis) Infection, Sarah Ellen Friend
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The ectoparasitic copepod, Lepeophtheius salmonis, is considered to be the most economically damaging parasite in commercial Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) culture, causing serious disease outbreaks which cost the industry nearly half a billion dollars annually. While other salmonid species show some resistance to this parasite, Atlantic salmon have previously shown very little in the way of inflammatory response to sea lice infection. The objective of this study was to enhance the immune response of Atlantic salmon to sea lice infection through the administration of in-feed immunostimulants. The efficacy of dietary additives to stimulate the immune response of Atlantic salmon against …
Illumination And Geometry Inference Using Graphical Models, Alexandros Panagopoulos
Illumination And Geometry Inference Using Graphical Models, Alexandros Panagopoulos
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Image formation is a function of three components: scene geometry, surface reflectance and illumination. Estimation of one or more of these components from an image gives rise to inverse rendering problems, such as shape reconstruction or illumination estimation, which are the two major problems of interest in this thesis. We formulate such problems in a way that attempts to bridge the gap between low-level approaches based on the physical laws governing image formation and higher-level models that examine images in a statistical way. We take advantage of the powerful formalism offered by graphical models, which lead to modular frameworks and …
Isotopy Invaraints Of Immersed Surfaces In A 4-Manifold, Luoying Weng
Isotopy Invaraints Of Immersed Surfaces In A 4-Manifold, Luoying Weng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this this dissertation we introduce an isotopy invariant of generically immersed surfaces in some 4-manifold. The construction is based on Khovanov homology and its variants in the same way as the construction of Turaev-Viro module of a 3-manifold with infinite cyclic covering relies on TQFT. The invariant is first constructed for generically immersed surfaces in S3 × S1 using the functoriality of Khovanov homology, and is generalized by using new versions of Khovanov homology. Moreover, it is also generalized to surfaces generically immersed transversal to a standardly embedded S2 in S4. Examples are studied to illustrate the strength and …
Effect Of Processing Conditions On The Anelastic Behavior Of Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings, Vaishak Viswanathan
Effect Of Processing Conditions On The Anelastic Behavior Of Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings, Vaishak Viswanathan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Plasma sprayed ceramic materials contain an assortment of micro-structural defects, including pores, cracks, and interfaces arising from the droplet based assemblage of the spray deposition technique. The defective architecture of the deposits introduces a novel "anelastic" response in the coatings comprising of their non-linear and hysteretic stress-strain relationship under mechanical loading. It has been established that this anelasticity can be attributed to the relative movement of the embedded defects under varying stresses. While the non-linear response of the coatings arises from the opening/closure of defects, hysteresis is produced by the frictional sliding among defect surfaces. Recent studies have indicated that …
Pan-Africanism In One Country: African Socialism, Neoliberalism And Globalization In Ghana, Justin Williams
Pan-Africanism In One Country: African Socialism, Neoliberalism And Globalization In Ghana, Justin Williams
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation is about the changing historical role of Pan-Africanism in Ghanaian politics from the late colonial period to the present. For a variety of reasons, the Republic of Ghana is an ideal site to explore questions about the interplay between Pan-Africanism and globalization. After becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain its independence in 1957, Ghana's First Republic espoused the core values of African socialism and anti-imperialism and anti-colonial solidarity under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah. The realization of independence in Ghana and Nkrumah's eagerness to sponsor other nationalist movements shifted the center of Pan-African activity from the …

Composing The " Land Of Sewing Machines And Typewriters" : American Modernist Music And The Piano In The Machine Age 1918-1933, Christine Fena
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, when much of the world's gaze was fixated on the innovative technologies and striking urban environments of the United States, a " machine-age" aesthetic became significant in the struggle for American composers to compete with Europe's domination over " cultivated" music. By mixing machine themes with music, composers like George Antheil challenged conventions, sparked debates, and questioned boundaries such as those between the past and the future of music, European and American culture, human performers and " mechanical" instruments, and the esteemed space of the concert hall and the " noise" of industry and the …
The Ahlfors Iteration For Confromal Mapping, Christopher Michael Green
The Ahlfors Iteration For Confromal Mapping, Christopher Michael Green
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Riemann Mapping Theorem states that for any proper, simply connected planar domain there exists a conformal mapping from the disk onto the domain. But can this map be explicitly described? For general domains, there is no obvious answer. However, if the domain is the interior of a simple polygon, a convenient formula for the Riemann map was discovered independently by Schwarz and Christoffel. In this dissertation, we present a local quadratically convergent algorithm, the Ahlfors Iteration, based on the theory of quasiconformal maps in the plane, to compute the Schwarz-Christoffel mapping. This algorithm will also apply to a larger …
Investigation Of The Spectral Properties Of Martian Chloride-Bearing Deposits As Observed By Crism And Themis, Heidi Bundgaard Jensen
Investigation Of The Spectral Properties Of Martian Chloride-Bearing Deposits As Observed By Crism And Themis, Heidi Bundgaard Jensen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The initial identification of proposed chloride-bearing deposits on Mars by the Mars Odyssey Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) inspired a series of remote sensing studies investigating its geological context and morphology. This thesis focuses on spectral properties observed in remote sensing data for proposed chloride-bearing deposits. In Chapter 2, the issue of connecting the near infrared (NIR) spectral character of these deposits to chloride minerals is approached. In Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) near infrared (1.1 - 2.5 ??m) reflectance data for these deposits, a red slope (increase in reflectance with increasing wavelength) is observed in spectral ratios …
Anger And Approach Motivation In The Parenting Context And Associated Frontal Activity: An Eeg Study, Lauren Knickerbocker
Anger And Approach Motivation In The Parenting Context And Associated Frontal Activity: An Eeg Study, Lauren Knickerbocker
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Emotion processing in the brain produces asymmetrical cortical activity in the left and right prefrontal regions, dependent on the emotional stimuli used. Empirically supported but competing hypotheses explain this phenomenon using qualities of the emotion that characterize either its valence (positive or negative) or its motivation potential (approach or avoid). The emotional stimuli used are often confounded in that both positive affect and approach-oriented emotions have been positively associated with increased left prefrontal activity, and negative affect and avoidance-oriented emotions have been positively associated with increased right prefrontal activity. Anger, which is negative in valence and approach-oriented, disentangles previous confounds and …
Enhanced Cholesterol Accessibility For Pfo Interaction In Membranes Containing Pope And Pops Phospholipids., Caroline Lee
Enhanced Cholesterol Accessibility For Pfo Interaction In Membranes Containing Pope And Pops Phospholipids., Caroline Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cholesterol biosynthesis regulation via the SREBP (sterol regulatory element binding protein) pathway has previously been elucidated to exhibit a switch-like response in the ER at ~ 5 mol% cholesterol. It has been proposed that this threshold value is mainly due to the control of the concentration at which cholesterol becomes accessible by the phospholipid composition of the ER membrane. We have conducted experiments to investigate this hypothesis. Perfringolysin O (PFO) was applied as a sterol sensor that binds membranes and oligomerizes upon cholesterol exposure in artificial membranes. Using this system, we detected a progressive enhancement of cholesterol accessibility as more …
Phylogenomic Analysis Of Sex-Dependent Gene Expression In The Drosophila Genus To Assess Alternative Models Of Evolution In Relation To Sex, Nicole Maurine Lashbrook
Phylogenomic Analysis Of Sex-Dependent Gene Expression In The Drosophila Genus To Assess Alternative Models Of Evolution In Relation To Sex, Nicole Maurine Lashbrook
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
When Charles Darwin formulated his theory of sexual selection in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, sex differences were understood largely in terms of morphology, physiology and behavior. Recent genomic studies have demonstrated that sex differences are apparent at the molecular level. In the Drosophila study system, `faster-male' evolution is widespread, as is indicated by enhanced rates of amino acid substitution for male-biased as compared to nonsex- and female-biased genes. While the role of intrasexual male competition has been highlighted in the interpretation of these observations, the alternative hypothesis that historical sex differences may account for …
Some People Have Real Problems, Elaine Rooney
Some People Have Real Problems, Elaine Rooney
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis is a creative work; a novel, which tells the story of a 28 year old divorce attorney who begins a dissociative, downward spiral. The story is told as a first person narrative through her eyes and begins as she stands on the roof of her Manhattan apartment building contemplating a dive. It's told through a series of vignettes detailing pieces of her past and present experiences as she navigates through life with her over-brimming and darkly natured mind often getting in her way. | 285 pages

High Pt Azimuthal Anisotropy In Au+Au Collisions At √Snn = 200 Gev, Rui Wei
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A noval state of nuclear matter, in which quarks and gluons are deconfined, yet strongly coupled to each other, is created in Au+Au collisions at the Relativisitic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This matter, which displays strong collective flow, and large opacity to the fast moving partons, are commonly refered to as the strongly coupled quark gluon plasma (sQGP). Many efforts are ongoing to understand the microscopic properties of the strong interaction and the relaxation process leading to the rapid thermalization. The PHENIX experiment has measured the azimuthal anisotropy of &pi0 at mid-rapidity (|Η| < 0.35) in Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV in RHIC 2007 …
The Evolution Of Milton's Satan Through Paradise Lost And Paradise Regained And Milton's Establishment Of The Hero, Nicole Cammareri
The Evolution Of Milton's Satan Through Paradise Lost And Paradise Regained And Milton's Establishment Of The Hero, Nicole Cammareri
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
One of the most imposing themes of John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667) is the depiction of Satan as heroic. Although deplorable and malevolent, the Satan of Paradise Lost appeals to the reader, and his actions and thoughts are easily agreed upon. Embodying the classification of tragic hero, Satan has both made an error in judgment and was overcome by a tragic flaw that brought about a devastating calamity. Moving onto Milton's second epic, Paradise Regained (1671), presents a new problem for the reader as the Satan that he became close to in Paradise Lost is non-existent. Satan is no longer …

Re-Visiting The May 2008 Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa, Jephias Matunhu
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Xenophobia is a latent or obtrusive dislike of foreigners. It is anti-social and destructive of property and life. Xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which started around mid May in 2008 in the informal settlements of Alexandria claimed 62 lives. Thousands of foreigners were left homeless. What triggered the xenophobic attacks on foreigners? Better still, what can be done to stop xenophobia and xenophobic attacks in South Africa? This desktop research provides responses to these questions.

How States Facilitate Small Arms Trafficking In Africa: A Theoretical And Juristic Interpretation, Dawn L. Rothe, Jeffrey Ian Ross
How States Facilitate Small Arms Trafficking In Africa: A Theoretical And Juristic Interpretation, Dawn L. Rothe, Jeffrey Ian Ross
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Small arms’ trafficking is complex and involves a host of actors. As numerous court documents, transcripts, United Nations and NGO reports have revealed, many state institutions play a prominent role in the facilitation of, complicity in, and implicit involvement in black and grey arms trafficking. We suggest that if we are to consider the vast number of actors involved in the trafficking of small arms, the issue of controls is highly problematic, given the extent of limited applicable international legal doctrines, such as joint criminal enterprise, criminal organization, or collective criminality. Furthermore, there are broader political issues that hinder efforts …
Role Of Tobacco Promotions On Smoking, George Thomas, Rani George
Role Of Tobacco Promotions On Smoking, George Thomas, Rani George
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
The major goal of the study was to examine the impact of tobacco promotions on smoking among African American college students. The study was conducted among undergraduate students (N=257) and incoming freshmen (N=287) in a Historically Black University. The variables in this study include gender, membership in athletic teams; membership in Greek organizations; staying in residence halls; tobacco promotion, cigarette smoking among family members; and cigarette smoking among close friends. Results of the logistic regression analyses indicate that predictors vary with the status of the students (undergraduates versus incoming freshmen) and nature of smoking (lifetime versus current smoking). The results …

Ethics Of World Citizens: Kantian Cosmopolitanism, Eunah Lee
Ethics Of World Citizens: Kantian Cosmopolitanism, Eunah Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The goal of this dissertation is to defend the Kantian cosmopolitan ideal in the context of contemporary debate about global ethics. Kant's cosmopolitanism has been criticized for its sharp dualism between morality and legality, which deprives it of the very potential for a practical project toward perpetual peace that it promises. This line of objection, famously raised by Hegel, enables a competing conception of cosmopolitanism. Although Hegel's situated or rooted conception of self and state provides us with relevant resources, Kant's ideal cannot or should not be replaced by Hegelian principles. An adequate appropriation of Kant's espousal of cosmopolitan rights …

Religion And Spirituality In Late 20th Century Music: Arvo Part, Jonathan Harvey, And John Coltrane, Steven Wayne Gehring
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this dissertation I focus on significant trends in music and spirituality in the latter half of the twentieth century as a legacy of dramatic transformations in religion and society. During this era, especially in the 1960s, a growing disaffection with traditional religion - as well as with traditional society in general - led many individuals to explore spirituality, either as a replacement for or as a byproduct of religion. I examine these trends in spirituality as a way of bringing to light the different ways composers and musicians have used their music to communicate a sense of spirituality. My …

Legitimacy And Legality: Carl Schmitt And The Dialectic Of Modernity, Celina Maria Bragagnolo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Recently, Carl Schmitt's critique of the modern liberal state has been deployed in an assessment of political modernity. One of the key ideas underlying this critique is the distinction between legitimacy and `mere legality,' which he identifies with modernity. I begin to asses this distinction first from the point of view of Schmitt's theory of secularization, since his critique of legality is the result of a certain philosophy of history. Secondly, I set Schmitt's critique of legality against a critical theoretical account of law and modernity by means of a discussion of the work of Hans Blumenberg, Franz Neumann and …
