From Nixon’S War On Drugs To Obama’S Drug Policies Today: Presidential Progress In Addressing Racial Injustices And Disparities, Cigdem Sirin Dec 2011

From Nixon’S War On Drugs To Obama’S Drug Policies Today: Presidential Progress In Addressing Racial Injustices And Disparities, Cigdem Sirin

Departmental Papers (PS)

This study investigates presidential progress in addressing racial injustices and disparities within the context of the war on drugs. I argue that racial inequalities emanating from the war on drugs have been largely overlooked and at times aggravated by previous administrations. Although there have been some improvements in this regard since President Obama took office, more extensive policy reforms are needed to better remedy such inequalities. I also argue that the viability of a progressive presidency for racial justice vis-à-vis U.S. drug policies depends not only on the personal agenda of the president but also on a supportive public as …

Ecological Revival And Sustainable Living In The Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest Of Tamil Nadu: A Measurement Of Residential Perception In Sadhana Forest, Elizabeth Collette Mcguire Dec 2011

Ecological Revival And Sustainable Living In The Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest Of Tamil Nadu: A Measurement Of Residential Perception In Sadhana Forest, Elizabeth Collette Mcguire

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Since 1970, the role and function of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been to promote environmental quality and to form strategies for carrying out environmental policy1. The EPA has committed to sustainability as the next level of environmental protection. The agency states that sustainability calls for policies and strategies that meet society’s present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs2. Presently, society’s requirements have resulted in natural resource exploitation and population distention- projected to reach 10 billion people within two human generations3. These paired occurrences are …

Avian Species Abundance In Response To Recreational Trail Use, Carrie A. Wencel Dec 2011

Avian Species Abundance In Response To Recreational Trail Use, Carrie A. Wencel

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Studies have indicated that non-consumptive outdoor recreation may affect wildlife. Thus, as the nation increases interest in outdoor recreation, data suggests the effect on wildlife will also increase. Previous studies indicate that as disturbance to wildlife increases, both avian species richness will decrease. Knowing how to anticipate effects on native species when planning and managing recreational areas is important in order to both provide for human desires and ensure the least impact to local species diversity.

The goal of this project was to observe and compare avian species richness and diversity between selected trail sites within Shevlin Park, Bend, Oregon …

Leisure Reading Habits: Students Attitudes Toward Their In School Reading Compared To Out Of School Reading., Jeffrey Early

Education Masters

The purpose of this study is to discover how students attitudes toward their in school reading compare to their out of school reading. It is my claim that students will have a much more positive attitude toward the reading that they do outside of school than they do of in school reading. Data was collected using students from three different ELA classrooms grades 10-12, including questionnaire data as well as interviews. The study reveals that a variety of different factors contribute to the difference in reading outside of school compared to the reading that takes place in school. If teachers …

Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew Dec 2011

Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew

Education Masters

This study questioned the validity of the Global History and Geography Regents exam DBQ as an authentic learning event and assessment. The previous five years of the Global History and Geography Regents DBQs administered in June were evaluated to assess the authenticity of the documents in regards to their context, the level of questioning featured in the task and constructed response questions, and the readability levels of the documents. Ultimately the analysis of the data disproved the validity of the DBQ as an authentic task as presented in the Global History and Geography Regents. In the end, teachers must infuse …

Retelling Using Different Methods, Sarah Stoutz Dec 2011

Retelling Using Different Methods, Sarah Stoutz

Education Masters

This study examines different methods of retelling and the effects of these methods on the quality of retelling produced. I claim that different methods of retelling will elicit varying quality of retellings. Data was collected through asking two first graders to retell stories that I had read to them using different methods. The study shows that confidence, memory, and cognitive demand of the retelling task, as well as visual cues and prompting play a role in retelling quality. Retelling is a strategy that is easy to use and can be easily adapted to meet the needs of different types of …

How To Have 4 Kids In 8 Months: Big Boy Brendan + 3, Nicole Hough Velazquez Dec 2011

How To Have 4 Kids In 8 Months: Big Boy Brendan + 3, Nicole Hough Velazquez

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Bringing a child into your life is one of the hardest things. Things change drastically, but for the better. Your life revolves around the needs, wishes and ―wants‖ of a child. You give all you can give to your child and all they give back to you is a messy house, whining and loads dirty of laundry. Children also give something that you cannot touch, see, feel, hear or smell; they give you their unconditional love."

Martin Luther King Jr.: What We Can Learn From Him Today, Christina Guzman

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. He was the eldest son of a Baptist minister, and the grandson of the founder of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where his father served as a pastor. When Martin Luther King, Jr. accepted his first job as a pastor in Montgomery, Alabama in 1954, he found a black community that had long-standing resentments over the mistreatment of black passengers on the city‘s segregated buses. After the arrest of Rosa Parks in November 1955, King was chosen …

Phonics Strategies And Letter-Sound Acquisition Knowledge, Kristina Reeb Dec 2011

Phonics Strategies And Letter-Sound Acquisition Knowledge, Kristina Reeb

Education Masters

This study addressed the question of how phonics strategies contribute to letter-sound acquisition knowledge through the use of three different phonics strategies. I emphasized that the use of phonics strategies in support to instruction increased the students' identification knowledge of letters and sounds. Data was collected through using three phonics strategies, letter and sound assessments, interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Four out of the five students were able to increase their letter-sound acquisition knowledge by identifying more letters and sounds on the assessments following the initial. Educators should use phonics strategies as a tool to enhance their instruction since the students …

The Effects Of Electronic Books On The Reading Experience Of First Grade Students, Ashley Melinis Dec 2011

The Effects Of Electronic Books On The Reading Experience Of First Grade Students, Ashley Melinis

Education Masters

This study examines the effect of electronic books on the reading experience of first grade students. Data was collected through observations, audio recordings of student retellings, interviews, and questionnaires on the student‘s reading experiences on the computer and Nook. The study reveals that electronic books motivate and engage all students, help strengthen struggling readers‘ text comprehension, provide supportive features for word reading, but also have potentially distracting features. Therefore, teachers should use electronic books in the classroom to foster technology and literacy skills and motivate struggling and reluctant readers, but must carefully select texts and train students on their use.

Lake Water Quality, Recreation, & Restoration: The Importance Of Stakeholder Involvement, Biran Gedlinske, Wade Kooiman, Katie Olsen Dec 2011

Lake Water Quality, Recreation, & Restoration: The Importance Of Stakeholder Involvement, Biran Gedlinske, Wade Kooiman, Katie Olsen

Other Faculty and Staff Publications

Historically, Iowa’s lakes have been plagued with numerous water quality problems including excessive siltation, nutrients, pesticides, and bacterial contamination. Iowa places a heavy reliance on voluntary efforts to address these problems, largely in the form of best management practices (BMPs). Studies have shown that BMPs can improve lake water quality and, in turn, increase recreational activity and visitor spending. In recognition of the potential economic, recreational, and social benefits of improved lake water quality, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) secured significant legislative funding in 2006 to initiate a state-wide lake restoration program (LRP).

LRP case studies are presented …

Bi-Stability, Hysteresis, And Memory Of Voltage-Gated Lysenin Channels, Daniel Fologea, Eric Krueger, Yuriy I. Mazur, Christine Stith, Yui Okuyama, Ralph Henry, Greg J. Salamo

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lysenin, a 297 amino acid pore-forming protein extracted from the coelomic fluid of the earthworm E. foetida, inserts constitutively open large conductance channels in natural and artificial lipid membranes containing sphingomyelin. The inserted channels show voltage regulation and slowly close at positive applied voltages. We report on the consequences of slow voltage-induced gating of lysenin channels inserted into a planar Bilayer Lipid Membrane (BLM), and demonstrate that these pore-forming proteins constitute memory elements that manifest gating bi-stability in response to variable external voltages. The hysteresis in macroscopic currents dynamically changes when the time scale of the voltage variation is …

Will Petrocaribe Expand Beyond Preferential Oil Purchases?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Dec 2011

Will Petrocaribe Expand Beyond Preferential Oil Purchases?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

At a PetroCaribe ministerial meeting in Nicaragua in October, officials from the countries involved in the Venezuela-sponsored initiative concluded agreements on more than $16 billion in new investment, EFE reported. The agenda also sought to expand the scope of PetroCaribe beyond just preferential oil purchases, including possible projects addressing electricity, renewable energy and food security. What is the reasoning behind the expansion into projects beyond the initiative's original scope? How much of a benefit has PetroCaribe been to its signatories? Is PetroCaribe achieving Venezuela's political aims, and will it take on increasing importance over time?

Diversification Or Cotton Recovery In The Malian Cotton Zone: Effects On Households And Women, Jeanne Yekeleya Coulibaly Dec 2011

Diversification Or Cotton Recovery In The Malian Cotton Zone: Effects On Households And Women, Jeanne Yekeleya Coulibaly

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

This dissertation investigates income diversification alternatives from the cotton economy and compares those initiatives with present policy measures to restore the cotton sector in Mali. It also derives the welfare implications for women of these various policy measures.

During the decade preceding 2011, farmers’ incomes in the cotton zone of Mali have been significantly affected by the downturn of the cotton economy explained by many factors including the low farm gate cotton price, the declining cotton yields and soil fertility concerns. In 2011, the Malian government substantially increased the farm gate cotton price as a result of the world cotton …

Fibromyalgia Syndrome: The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Attachment Style On Couple Relationship, Ileana Ungureanu Dec 2011

Fibromyalgia Syndrome: The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Attachment Style On Couple Relationship, Ileana Ungureanu

Marriage and Family Therapy - Dissertations

The fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is the most frequent cause of chronic, widespread pain in North America and Europe. It is a non-inflammatory musculoskeletal syndrome predominantly found in the female middle-aged population with a ratio men/women of ¼. Considered for decades an `imaginary' or at best a psychosomatic disease, fibromyalgia gained its status as a diagnosable entity in the early 90s giving a `voice' to the invisible suffering of people, the majority of them being women afflicted by it. While in general the research on psychosocial aspects of fibromyalgia is scarce, couple and family aspects are even less studied than individual …

A Tribute To Paul Miller: A Beloved Friend And Colleague, Michael E. Waterstone, Michael Ashley Stein

Washington Law Review

We mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, Paul Steven Miller. Paul served different roles in our lives. To one of us, he was a mentor and source of comfort and inspiration to someone finding his way in a new career (law teaching) and new field (disability law). To the other, he was a law school contemporary and, as one of the few other persons with a visible disability in the legal academy, someone with whom he could share confidences. To both of us—and countless others—Paul was a friend: someone we could turn to for discussions about life and …

A "Narrow Exception" Run Amok: How Courts Have Misconstrued Employee-Rights Laws' Exclusion Of "Policymaking" Appointees, And A Proposed Framework For Getting Back On Track, Angela Galloway Dec 2011

A "Narrow Exception" Run Amok: How Courts Have Misconstrued Employee-Rights Laws' Exclusion Of "Policymaking" Appointees, And A Proposed Framework For Getting Back On Track, Angela Galloway

Washington Law Review

The civil rights and workplace protections afforded some government workers vary vastly nationwide because federal circuit courts disagree over how to interpret an exemption common to five landmark employment statutes. Each statute defines “employee” for its purposes to exclude politicians and certain categories of politicians’ appointees—including government employees appointed by elected officials to serve at “the policymaking level.” Neither Congress nor the United States Supreme Court has defined who belongs to the “policymaking-level” class. Consequently, lower federal courts across the country have adopted their own standards to fill the gap, creating a wide circuit split. At stake in this employment …

Outlier Detection Using Modified-Ranks And Other Variants, Huaming Huang, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan Dec 2011

Outlier Detection Using Modified-Ranks And Other Variants, Huaming Huang, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Rank based algorithms provide a promising approach for outlier detection, but currently used rank-based measures of outlier detection suffer from two deficiencies: first they take a large value from an object whose density is high even though the object may not be an outlier and second the distance between the object and its nearest cluster plays a mild role though its rank with respect to its neighbor. To correct for these deficiencies we introduce the concept of modified-rank and propose new algorithms for outlier detection based on this concept.
