Middleware For Supporting Content Sharing In Dynamic Networks, Mohan Kumar, Sharma Chakravarthy, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman, Waseem Naqvi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a middleware architecture to enable seamless content sharing in highly dynamic networks, such as those involving a number of aerial unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which are characterized by constantly changing connectivity and network topology. the proposed middleware maintains up-to-date network status as well as metadata information about data objects in the network nodes, masking the content sharing applications from the network dynamics and faults. Mechanisms for node discovery, message passing, and network management are developed. a strategy is also proposed for efficient replication to ensure availability of data in highly mobile environments. the middleware includes a message …

Funding Continuum For Private Business Owners: Evidence From The Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Project Survey, Maretno A. Harjoto, John K. Paglia Dec 2011

Funding Continuum For Private Business Owners: Evidence From The Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Project Survey, Maretno A. Harjoto, John K. Paglia

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Project survey for business owners, administered during the spring of 2010, reveals an increasingly important role of friends and family (Friends/Family) to provide capital for privately-held businesses. Examining business owners’ perceptions of their sources of capital reveals that, overall, business owners prefer Friends/Family and angel financing as well as asset-based lenders and banks (ABL/Bank). Business owners consider Friends/Family financing to be the least costly. However, business owners also believe venture capital (VC), private equity (PE), and angels provide more benefits than friends/family and ABL/Bank. This study unveils a detailed spectrum of the funding continuum for …

Putting Ratios Into A Firm Value Context For Entrepreneurs And Entrepreneurship Students, Tom Arnold Dec 2011

Putting Ratios Into A Firm Value Context For Entrepreneurs And Entrepreneurship Students, Tom Arnold

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Ratio analysis is generally presented as something that has to be calculated after completing other financial statements and is generally viewed, particularly by students, as busy-work with little value. This paper changes the context of ratio analysis in order to demonstrate how a focus on the information provided by ratios adds to the value of the firm. By dissecting the valuation of a publicly traded firm using a price to earnings ratio multiplier, value generating factors in the form of ratios, can be inferred for smaller non-publicly traded ventures.

Brand Reputation And The Cost Of Capital: Evidence Of Adopting A Brand Name As The Corporate Name, Yilin Wu Dec 2011

Brand Reputation And The Cost Of Capital: Evidence Of Adopting A Brand Name As The Corporate Name, Yilin Wu

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper studies how the capital market perceives brand name adoption. I distinguish between brand adoption and radical type of corporate name change. A brand adoption name change occurs when the firm adopts one of its well-established brands as its new corporate name and a radical type occurs when the new name is semantically unrelated to firm history. Improved profitability and increased net investment accompany brand name adoption. After controlling for changes in the competing information sources, the accompanying improved economic performance, and the endogeneity of the decision to adopt a brand name, I find that, while there are no …

E-Readiness And Entrepreneurship: A Cross Country Study Of The Link Between Technological Infrastructure And Entrepreneurial Activity, Richard L. Constand, Arthur H. Gilbert, Jr. Dec 2011

E-Readiness And Entrepreneurship: A Cross Country Study Of The Link Between Technological Infrastructure And Entrepreneurial Activity, Richard L. Constand, Arthur H. Gilbert, Jr.

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This current study focuses on the relationship between a country’s e-readiness environment and entrepreneurial activities. Many government policies assume there is a direct causal relationship between e-readiness and entrepreneurial activity and some past studies have reported evidence supporting such a link. In this paper, a cross country panel data analysis using three different measures of entrepreneurial activity and different measures of e-readiness examines this relationship. The results of this study provide only weak support for the hypothesized relationship. Furthermore, the results appear to be very sensitive to the choice of proxy variables chosen to represent entrepreneurial activity and the different …

Computer Simulation Of A Mathematical Model Of Haart Therapy For Hiv-1 Aids, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin Dec 2011

Computer Simulation Of A Mathematical Model Of Haart Therapy For Hiv-1 Aids, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

College of Health, Science, and Technology

A clinically plausible mathematical model is constructed to describe the patho-physiological dynamics of HIV-1 induced AIDS during HAART therapy. The model equations incorporate physiological interactions between non-infected helper T cells, HIV-1 infected helper T cells, HIV-1 virions in the blood plasma, HIV-1 specific cytotoxic T cells and drug molecules of the HAART protocol. Investigative computer simulations are performed to elucidate some therapeutic scenarios such as viral annihilation and efficacious HAART therapy. In particular, some mathematical criteria are derived for therapeutic outcomes such as viral persistence and viral annihilation. © 2011 IEEE.

Obituary: Jerry Ronald Choate, 1943-2009, Elmer J. Finck, Hugh H. Genoways, Justin D. Hoffman, Carleton J. Phillips, Robert J. Baker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Jerry Ronald Choate (1943–2009) had just retired as Director of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and Professor of Biological Sciences, Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, at the time of his death. Jerry served the American Society of Mammalogists in numerous capacities, including Recording Secretary, First Vice President, and most notably as a member and chair of the Board of Trustees.

The hallmark of Jerry’s life was to turn the ordinary into something magnificent. Whether it was his photography that changed an ordinary landscape into a magnificent masterpiece, or his convincing a reluctant graduate student that they could do …

The Feathers Of Winter, Paul A. Johnsgard Dec 2011

The Feathers Of Winter, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

For many Nebraska birders, the last big event of the year is the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, which is held annually during the last week of December. It is an occasion to join with friends in a day out to try see as many species as possible in a single day. More importantly, it provides a database that, combined with those of more than 50,000 other observers, provides a highly documented population sample of early-winter birds throughout North America, Latin America and the Caribbean region. The tradition began in 1900, and as of 2011 there have been 111 national counts. …

A General Attack Method For Steganography Removal Using Pseudo-Cfa Re-Interpolation, Pradhumna Shrestha, Michael Hempel, Tao Ma, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif Dec 2011

A General Attack Method For Steganography Removal Using Pseudo-Cfa Re-Interpolation, Pradhumna Shrestha, Michael Hempel, Tao Ma, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Watermarking and steganography are two of the most researched topics in multimedia forensics. However, easy availability of tools and technology has made their misuse a serious concern. To counteract this development some effective tools are necessary to remove malicious steganography. In this work, we introduce a novel watermark attack method which can destroy hidden information embedded in images based on the principle of re-interpolation of Color Filter Array (CFA) artifacts. In digital cameras and scanners, CFA filters are used to acquire low-resolution physical color channel information and produce a high-quality image by subsequent interpolation. We propose to emulate a similar …

Ethnic Difference In Healthcare Delivery, Benny Mathew Varghese Dec 2011

Ethnic Difference In Healthcare Delivery, Benny Mathew Varghese

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Quality in healthcare is a very important aspect; this is obtained when there is proper care provided to the patients without any discrimination. The healthcare system in the US can be improved in the fields of patient’s care, the amount of money spent and proper advice, if proper responsibilities are taken. Quality has been improving over the years, but the median by which there is an increase is too small. The other main factor is access to the healthcare system, which has over the year, has not progressed. Studies in healthcare quality should be conducted on a regular base, so …

A Quantitative Performance Analysis Of 2.5 Ghz And 3.65 Ghz Mobile Wimax, Pradhumna L. Shrestha

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mobile WiMAX has emerged as a prime contender for the de-facto ITU’s 4G standard. It provides high data rate with large coverage and vehicular mobility support. It has been, and is being, widely deployed in diverse applications like video streaming, broadcasting and data service. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) issues licenses to operate Mobile WiMAX services in several spectrums, among which 2.5 GHz and 3.65 GHz are the most common. Because the 2.5 GHz spectrum suffers the least propagation losses, it has been widely applied commercially. For this reason, academic and industrial researchers have given it particular attention. However, in …

Lithium In The Upper Centaurus Lupus And Lower Centaurus Crux Subgroups Of Scorpius-Centaurus, Eric J. Bubar, Marc Schaeuble, Jeremy R. King, Eric E. Mamajek, John R. Stauffer Dec 2011

Lithium In The Upper Centaurus Lupus And Lower Centaurus Crux Subgroups Of Scorpius-Centaurus, Eric J. Bubar, Marc Schaeuble, Jeremy R. King, Eric E. Mamajek, John R. Stauffer

Publications

We utilize spectroscopically derived model atmosphere parameters and the Li i λ6104 subordinate line and the λ6708 doublet to derive lithium abundances for 12 members of the Upper Centaurus Lupus and Lower Centaurus Crux subgroups of the Scorpius–Centaurus OB Association. The results indicate any intrinsic Li scatter in our 0.9–1.4 M stars is limited to ∼0.15 dex, consistent with the lack of dispersion in 1.0 M stars in the 100 Myr Pleiades and 30–50 Myr IC 2391 and 2602 clusters. Both ab initio uncertainty estimates and the derived abundances themselves indicate that the λ6104 line yields abundances with equivalent or …

Using Gis-Based, Hitchcock Algorithm To Optimize Parking Allocations For Special Events, Wayne A. Sarasua, Prashant Malisetty, Mashrur Chowdhury

Publications

Clemson, a small college town in South Carolina, deals with a massive over-saturation of its transportation system during special events, especially during home football games, resulting in total system failure. This research has developed a methodology to optimize parking, using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based transshipment algorithm, and it has produced great time savings compared with the individual, “manual” efforts of thousands of drivers attempting to find spaces where available. As such, this research constitutes an effective implementation of the Hitchcock Transportation Algorithm for solving a transshipment problem applied to parking lot distribution. Because the Hitchcock Algorithm considers the network …

Male Backlash, Bargaining, Or Exposure Reduction?: Women's Working Status And Physical Spousal Violence In India, Yoo-Mi Chin Dec 2011

Male Backlash, Bargaining, Or Exposure Reduction?: Women's Working Status And Physical Spousal Violence In India, Yoo-Mi Chin

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Labor force participation of women is expected to decrease the risk of spousal violence by enhancing their bargaining power or diminishing their contacts with abusive partners. the opposite effect is predicted when female employment induces male backlash. I identify the effect of female employment on spousal violence by exploiting the exogenous variations in rural women's working status driven by rainfall shocks and the rice-wheat dichotomy. the instrumental variable regression result indicates that female employment significantly reduces the incidence of spousal violence. This result is mainly driven by the exposure reduction effect that dominates male backlash. There is, however, no evidence …
