Establishes state bank, initially funded by $200,000,000 General Fund loan. Imposes 15 percent minimum tax on value of oil and gas extracted in California, for state bank capital. Mandates deposit of certain state funds in state bank, and authorizes public and private entities and individuals to establish accounts. State guarantees deposits. Authorizes state bank to borrow money, invest funds, make loans to businesses, organizations, and local governments, and keep earnings. In his lecture, Dr. Francaviglia presents a fascinating framework in which to understand American history and culture, as well as Mormons specifically. Orientalism was defined for the lecture as the assimilation or imitation of that which is oriental in religious or philosophical thought, or in art. Through various mediums, including architectural examples, quotes from Mormons and their detractors, and travel literature, Dr. Francaviglia demonstrates that not only Mormons were compared to Oriental peoples and assigned Oriental traits, but they also actively attributed such traits to themselves; they assumed an Oriental identity. The art of caring is foundational to the nursing profession, but too often nurses prioritize care for others above care for themselves. Nurse self-care and peer care are integral in the creation of a unit culture of care. This project introduces a new nursing practice model based on Jean Watson's caring theory and Caritas Processes to guide staff nurses on an obstetrical unit in creating a culture of care for self and peers. The practice model relies on nurse courage, intentional collaboration, and creativity to uniquely integrate the Caritas Processes into professional practice. The use of integrative medicine is growing, and the nursing profession has a responsibility to meet the changing needs of patients. This paper describes a model of nursing for delivering integrative medicine practices at the bedside to persons suffering with post-traumatic headache pain related to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is grounded in Katherine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. A patient is best served when the holistic principles of integrative medicine are facilitated by a nurse who is centered and able to introduce these modalities with positive intention. Hospitals are challenged to create a strong culture of safety within their organization to eliminate harm to patients. This paper describes a project to advance a culture of safety on a cardiovascular acute care unit at an urban hospital through the creation of a unit-based safety team. Based on the premise that patient safety is a local phenomenon, the rationale for the project is to aim interventions at the unit level where they will have the greatest impact. Last week while I was in the shower, my four-year-old daughter, Raquel, walked into the bathroom and asked me an interesting question. “Mom, why doesn’t anyone like Rudolph’s shiny red nose?” My daughter was supposed to be in bed sleeping. I am 99% sure she was lying in bed reflecting on her day.

In Rhetoric, Aristotle called the enthymeme the syllogism of persuasion. More recently, philosopher Stephen Toulmin used a similar structure to form “practical arguments” in his Model of Argument in The Uses of Argument (1958). Essentially, such an argument consists of three components: claim, evidence, warrant. The claim is an arguable conclusion, for example “Edward Hopper is a famous painter.” The evidence provides a reason to support this claim, for example “because his work is at the Art Institute in Chicago.” The warrant is an assumption inherent in an argument, usually unstated, in this case, that famous artists have work …

In an attempt to demonstrate Spain's obligation to recover its ignored historic memory, Almudena Grandes evokes the poetry of a man whose past itself has been manipulated, misused and partially forgotten: the great poet Antonio Machado. In this study I examine the use of the famous "two Spain" imagery from Machado's "Españolito" as a tool for subverting many erroneous concepts about the war that, according to Grandes, are still prevalent in Spanish society. I also examine how this "two Spain" conflict demonstrates the crossroads that faces the third generation of Spaniards after the Civil War: that of collectively remaining in …
