The driver of agricultural development is the introduction of new technology. Sensitive sorghums have long been a critical component of hillside Central American agriculture providing a reserve or insurance policy when the principal staple of maize falters. The insensitive sorghums have been more recently introduced since the ‘70s for planting in the valleys in the second season. In the last thirty years the introduction of new insensitive cultivars has accelerated initially for poultry and in the previous two decades for dairy production. This growth has been facilitated by strategic investments in research by CENTA and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The maritime industry is an economic activity that enables global trade and travel. However, the transportation network is threatened by security risks that seek to exploit vulnerabilities and cause damage to ships, interrupt the global supply chain network, and endanger the lives of crewmembers and passengers. While policies exist to aid in the prevention of attacks, these policies, alone, are insufficient to sustain global maritime domain security and awareness. Policies must be effectively enforced and complemented with highly trained crewmembers who have the knowledge and skills to efficiently prevent, detect, and respond to threats. Both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the the metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and insulin resistance have each been associated with the development of MetS and the onset of T2D as well as the risk of CVD. Inflammation and insulin resistance are therefore suitable targets for public health initiatives and interventions in persons at risk for or living with CVD. In 2008 it was estimated that in Broward County approximately 1 in 130 was living with HIV/AIDS. Broken down by race, it was 1 in 216 Whites, 1 in 50 Blacks and 1 in 198 Hispanics. Broward County had the second highest case rate of all the counties in the state of Florida. HIV/AIDS prevention remains a critical challenge and high impact prevention strategies are needed consistently to reach the most people using limited time, effort and funds. There has been little evidence to demonstrate the relationship between sources of information, specifically media channels, and risk perception and risk behaviors. …

Examining The Efficacy Of Hiv Risk-Reduction Counseling On The Sexual Risk Behaviors Of A National Sample Of Drug Abuse Treatment Clients: Analysis Of Subgroups, Lauren K. Gooden

This dissertation sought to evaluate the efficacy of brief, HIV risk-reduction counseling (versus information only) among subgroups of substance abuse treatment clients by conducting a series of post-hoc analyses of data that were collected from the CTN 0032 trial. It was hypothesized that HIV risk-reduction counseling would be associated with decreased sexual risk behaviors in several subgroups as determined by baseline characteristics. Findings of this dissertation suggest that brief, HIV risk-reduction counseling delivered in conjunction with rapid HIV testing is not efficacious in reducing number of risky sex acts among subgroups of substance abuse treatment clients. We report the detection of three new exoplanets from Keck Observatory. HD 163607 is a metal-rich G5IV star with two planets. The inner planet has an observed orbital period of 75.29 ± 0.02 days, a semi-amplitude of 51.1 ± 1.4 m s−1, an eccentricity of 0.73 ± 0.02, and a derived minimum mass of MPsin i = 0.77 ± 0.02 MJup. This is the largest eccentricity of any known planet in a multi-planet system. The argument of periastron passage is 78.7 ± 2fdg0; consequently, the planet's closest approach to its parent star is very near the line of sight, leading …
