Interprofessional collaboration is emerging as a key factor in reshaping healthcare practices in Canada over the last eight years. Collaboration in healthcare necessarily implies health providers sharing responsibility and partnering with each other in order to provide comprehensive patient care. A review of the empirical literature on teamwork in healthcare settings suggests that relationships between service providers remain conflictual and variable in their commitment to interprofessional collaboration (Zwarnstein & Bryant 2000). The world faces a worsening public health crisis: A growing number of bacteria are resistant to available antibiotics. Yet there are few new antibiotics in the development pipeline to take the place of these increasingly ineffective drugs. We review a number of proposals intended to bolster drug development, including such financial incentives for pharmaceutical manufacturers as extending the effective patent life for new antibiotics. However, such strategies directly conflict with the clear need to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and could actually increase prescription use. Monitoring long-term variability in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream provides insight into the larger-scale gyre circulation in the Atlantic including northward heat and mass transport by the western boundary current. The containership M/V Oleander has an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) attached to its hull and has measured upper-ocean current during its weekly route between New Jersey and Bermuda since late 1992. The transit covers three distinct regions of the northwest Atlantic including the Slope Sea, Gulf Stream, and Sargasso Sea. The 16-year ADCP record provides an excellent data set to create a mean geostrophic sea surface height (SSH) …

Bipolar disease is a severe and chronic debilitating mental disorder affecting 1-3% of the population. Omega-3-fatty acids have been shown to relieve symptoms of bipolar disorder and are not associated with the negative side effects of lithium and valproate, two of the commonly used drugs for treating this condition. The mechanism of action of omega-3-fatty acids remains unknown. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine if, like lithium and valproate, omega-3-fatty acids affect inositol metabolism. For centuries, activated Charcoal (AC) has been used externally in a poultice form to adsorb "poisons" trapped in the outer layers of skin and internally to relieve intestinal discomfort and to remove toxic materials. The largest use for activated charcoal, in our society, is as a filter bed in air and water remediation cartridges. Recently, scientists have formulated AC into a nonstick dermal bandage called the Charcoal Patch (CP), but the adsorption properties are not well understood for this new formulation. We are in the process of developing a two-step synthesis of imino stilbenes as potential molecular switches, which are important in biology, electronics and other applications especially at nanoscopic scale. While both imines and stilbenes are well known, we have not uncovered any prior research and documentation on our proposed imino stilbenes in the scientific literature. In pursuit of our goal we have developed a new procedure for synthesis of t-butyl imines derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Synthesis And Testing Of Second Generation Azatilbenes, Maurice Hardy

Based on previous research, azastilbenes have been reported as effective chemical sensors for organophosphates and organothiophosphates; they are related classes and the active components of agricultural pesticides, environmental pollutants and chemical warfare agents. This project builds on previous work and involves the synthesis of a variety of these azastilbenes and the testing of their respective properties. Azastilbene sensors are prepared using high-yield organic synthetic methodology developed in Professor Murray's lab. The next step involves testing the sensors through a measure, by UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorometry, of an optical change upon the addition of analyte to a solution containing azastilbene sensor.

The Effects Of Valproate Prodrugs On The Inositol Biosynthetic Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Yeast, Lisa Thompson

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by episodes of abnormally elevated mood followed by periods of extreme depression. Currently, valproate is one of the drugs used to treat the disorder but it is associated with many negative side effects. The goal of this project is to create a prodrug with structural similarities to valproate and determine if its effect on growth of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is similar to that of valproate. Yeast cells were grown in media with or without the prodrug in the presence or absence of inositol. The results showed that the prodrug inhibited growth.

This paper examines the influences of religious and political attitudes on attitudes towards women in power. Specifically, I measure the ideology and general favorability of Conservative Christians (Seventhday Adventists) towards various political candidates and ideological positions. This question is worth analyzing, considering relatively recent events regarding the role of women in politics and corresponding discussion in religious circles on the role of women in church leadership. Simultaneous Digital Demodulation And Rds Extraction Of Fm Radio Signals, Jonathan Ford

FM radio plays a large part in many peoples' lives. A digital stream of information known as the Radio Data System (RDS) can be transmitted alongside the audio signal in an FM radio broadcast. This digital signal may contain information such as the current song, traffic alerts, and emergency notices. Using MATLAB, a method is presented by which the RDS data may be digitally extracted from multiple FM broadcasts simultaneously. This method's parallel nature makes Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology, such as a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), an ideal platform for implementation.

Enhanced Interlayer Exchange Coupling In Co/Fe/Mgo/Fe(001), Andrew Hoff

We investigate the bilinear and biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling in Co/Fe/MgO/Fe(001). Samples are grown through molecular beam epitaxy and the interlayer exchange coupling is measured through magneto-optic Kerr effect along wedge samples. By varying the location of Fe impurities between the interface and middle of the MgO spacer, we find that the couplings are enhanced and are dependent on the location of the impurities. We found that the interfacial impurities created a larger impact across all thickness on the bilinear coupling than no impurities or impurities in the middle of the MgO. The biquadratic coupling didn't have a clear trend.

Beethovens Violin and Piano Sonata Op. 23 in A minor is a multi-movement sonata that has three unexpected formal events: two occurring in the Presto (movement one) and one in the Allegro Molto (movement three). These formal anomalies, discovered through the creation of form diagrams, present potentially challenging moments of interpretation for performers. The question this project addresses is whether or not the three areas of formal anomaly allow performers more freedom in personal interpretation than normative formal events. The results of this research show that performers do take additional freedom in interpretation during such unexpected formal events.

Detection of H1N1 or other seasonal and highly contagious viruses are of vital importance, since early diagnosis from a patient's fluid, such as saliva, would accelerate treatment and containment of the flu. Current lab tests often require cumbersome labeling steps and several hours to detect the presence of viral DNAs. The QCM-D (quartz crystal microbalances with dissipation) technology was used to detect presence as well as distinguish H1N1 and H1N5 DNAs in real-time (a few minutes) with the use of relatively small sample volume (200-500 ul). Using a traditional approach or technique to perform nontraditional works may lead to a deviance in the way the pianist plays the music. This research hypothesis is to demonstrate how applying an understanding about Henry Cowells life and Irish heritage, while practicing and eventually in the performance, can lead to a more meaningful and accurate presentation of his works. Instructions of practice techniques are provided with each piece to help facilitate the desired effect. Henry Cowells works were chosen because they are relatively unknown to most music students, in addition to a personal interest in 20th-century music of this genre.

The Role Of Ci(-) Channel-Inhibition In The Brain On The Phonotactic Selectivity Of Female Crickets, Brent H. Sherwin

The goal of this project was to determine if picrotoxin influences phonotactic selectivity of female crickets when nanoinjected into the supraesophageal ganglion. Adult females of Acheta domesticus were pre-tested for phonotaxis on a treadmill to a range of calling songs with different syllable periods. Following dissection to expose the brain, 9.2 nL of either saline (control group) or 10-5 M picrotoxin (experimental group) was nanoinjected into the supraesophageal ganglion. Post-tests following saline injection (10 min later) were similar to the pre-tests. Picrotoxin-treated females became more phonotactically selective displaying a preference for calling songs with the shorter syllable periods.

Starting with the negative behavior exhibited by Leontes and Autolycus, this paper traces the process of redemption through the experiences of both characters, considering material both from the play and the Stratford production. The political and civic effects of Leontes‘ tyranny will be contrasted with Autolycus‘ roguery, followed by a comparison of the various agents of redemption. These characters and the offers of redemption they make have a profound effect on their respective redemptions, but only so far as Leontes and Autolycus receive them. Although the Seventh-day Adventist (Adventist) Church promotes love of God and love for fellowmen, there is a perception that its members are generally intolerant of persons who do not hold religious beliefs that are similar to theirs.
